My understanding is Dex improves hits/crits with the Bow...?
I was just reading up on that. It seems the Dex does increase bow damage which I may need on 5-1 so maybe I'll start putting more into it. In fact, I just figured out some minimal levels I need to aim for for various stats. These are based on getting a certain number of spell slots and/or being able to handle certain special weapons. I think I'll go for the following: Strength 24 (I'm already at 22), Dexterity 16 or 18 (24 max for some weapons - problem is I'm at the start here - maybe 12?), Faith 24/36 (for 3/4 slots), Magic 24, Intelligence 30/40 (for 5/6 slots). So for now, to handle 5-1 boss, I'll go with dexterity and strength to hopefully get my bow power up enough to counteract his recharge ability. Also, I need to farm spiderstone shards to upgrade my sticky bow past +3. It's weird because I have enough chunks, but I can't get shards for the life of me. I keep farming the miners at the start of 2-2 but I keep getting graystone/hardstone/sharpstone from them instead. The WT is too white there I think (so fewer drops).
yeah, the only thing i'm worried about is the ramped up difficulty going pure black. i didn't have much difficulty going through 1-1 (female royal), since i soul arrowed just about everything. i only died once, on the red dragon part, but i was even able to gain my souls back when i made it across the bridge on the second try. i worry that i'm gonna get my ass handed to me if i have to start relying on melee combat
And you will have to at some point. Make sure to follow the guide to get the winged spear/purple flame shield combo as that can get you through a lot of the later stuff as a royal - make sure to up your strength to 22 early on. Just wait till you go into 4-1 and have to fight the rolling skeletons

. They can be quite tough at first as you'll only be able to get one soul arrow off at them before they roll at you. But a few soul levels later and I can handle them with ease now. I fire off a soul arrow, switch to the winged spear + 6, let them hit me once (or dodge, roll out of the way but it isn't necessary), then spear them 2 or 3 times and they are toast. But the first time I went into that world it was tough going.
As for the exploding lights in 2-2, the purple flame shield blocks them 100% as long as you are lined up correctly. I got badly hurt/killed a few times when I was turned a bit. It gets a bit harder when you have to deal with the one later in the tunnel.
