Demon's Souls - Atlus & From Software's Action RPG - October 6
This is probably a stupid question, but how do you use magic and miracles? I bought heal and a couple of spells, but other than soul arrow which (i think) works automatically, idk how to use them :(
I answered this before when you asked about it:
1) Do you actually have any magic? You need a catalyst (wand), and you have to equip the catalyst as your weapon. And, you cast magic just like you attack. If you don't have magic then you have to get your magic stat to 10, and buy some in the Nexus.
And, in order to use a miracle, you need a talisman instead of a catalyst. And, soul arrow doesn't work automatically.

EDIT: Yeah, the remembering thing is important too.
have you beaten 1-1 yet?
No, I keep fucking dying
on the bridge with the dragon and I lose all my souls. Quickly beginning to wonder if I should sell my game and keep the Deluxe edition items and bonus artbook/CD.

Bridge? The little short bridge? The short bridge should get cleared by the dragon in 1-1... save maybe 2 guys. Then just run across when the dragon isn't coming.

The big bridge/wall is in 1-2.

But yeah, you have to beat 1-1 before you can do anything.

Pretty sure I'm going to die after I get across the bridge and fight the 1-1 boss...there goes all those souls again.

EDIT: didn't even get to the bridge, two enemies took my health before I could get an herb. eBay, here I come.

As soon as the dragon comes and starts his fire run, book it for the end of the bridge. As long as you cleared out the initial batch of soldiers and pikemen, you don't really need to go after the remaining archers until you're safely across, and of course the dragon will have taken out most of the rest for you anyways.

I tried to farm skels in 2-1 last night, but I got creamed after the first run and never got back into sync after that. >_< I was a bit frustrated 'cause the first time around, I did fine, but second time I could not time the rolling right and I just kept dying to the same skel a couple times.

I think I will just grind a bunch to buy arrows so I can take out the red dragon. I think I need a mace or something to dispatch those skellies easier.

Got past that part. Dragon didn't really do anything. This entire time I've been exploring but have never reached the end of either
door on the sides. This obviously helps quite a bit in getting back to where you were/died.
Off to get my ass handed to me by the 1-1 boss.
After you buy them you have to speak to the guy to "remember" them to assign them as slot in your inventory. Then up on the dpad change them out. Need a catalyst to cast spells and talisman to use miracles.
Doh, I was wondering why I couldn't load the flame toss I purchased last night!

I was like, wut the-? Don't I have two spell slots? Totally forgot about that.

It was late, and I was getting tired of dying to skels. Then I had to work an overnight maintenance for work--I have an excuse I think, lol. :p

when you get to the inside of the castle at the end of the bridge, immediately to your right is a lever to open the main gate at the beginning of 1-1. Once you open it, you can just dive right into the boss battle w/o having to redo the entire area to get there if you ever get killed.
There is no deposit. You just have to spend. You can talk to the lady in black to level up or you can buy/repair stuff.
Yep, spend, spend, spend. If you haven't beaten the 1-1 boss then you can't spend on levels but you can buy some equipment (heater shield is a good one).
What is your Luck stat at?
10 right now. It started at 8 and I put it to 9 a while ago and just raised it to 10. It's not that. It is just a high drop rate for reapers coupled with fairly dark WT I guess.
Pretty sure I'm going to die after I get across the bridge and fight the 1-1 boss...there goes all those souls again.

How odd - when I played that there was no dragon at that 1-1 bridge (I guess the WT was whitish). I just had to take out the 12-15 enemies myself but that was fairly easy with soul arrow - just needed to dodge a few arrows. The two enemies on your left as you approach that bridge just need to be handled carefully. If you run up to the bridge they will be behind you. Go slowly and be sure to take them out. Seriously, the game isn't that hard once you know what's coming as it is the same every time. And the 1-1 boss is not all that hard either, as you can blast a few of the mini-phalaxes away and then just slash at his back where he isn't protected. It is also very easy to get away from him and use healing items (though you always have to be careful as he will move towards you). Once you get past him, then you can level up which makes things much easier from there on.

I'm doing fine on the skeletons with the purple flame shield and winged spear. At this point I can even let them roll into me and hit me once - no damage but my stamina goes down about 2/3 or so. But then I can simply spear them 2 or 3 times and they are toast. Wait till you run into one of the black katana skeletons though ;). I'd suggest taking the first one out with arrows (from right where you see the first arrow shooting skeleton early in 2-1).

Yeah, my starting buckler+1 is no match for the skellies. I'm gonna need to take out that dragon so I can grab the purple flame shield. I hope he yields enough souls so I can get close to strength 22. I'm so determined to do this, I may just forgo my Uncharted 2 session tonight so I can concentrate on getting enough arrows. >_<

Yup. Now the fun begins, lol.

Yeah, see, I told you ;).

Now here was the most frustrating part of the game for me. When you go back to the Nexus and talk to the cnadle maiden (the freaky girl dressed in black ;)) she will tell you the Monumental wants to talk to you and then it will show a cinematic zooming up to the huge statue with the sword. So I spent like an hour running around the upper part of the Nexus trying to get near the head of that thing assuming that must be something called a "Momumental" - after all it is a big, well, monument.

No, the monumental is one of the stupid little dead people/tiny statues sitting on the floor with a candle in front of it :wall:. So yeah, talk to him and then you can go back down and level up with the maiden.

You can also buy the heater shield in the Nexus as it is much better than the buckler and will serve you well until you get the purple flame shield. You may need it just to get to the place where you can shoot the dragon.

It always amazes me how many white phantoms I see in harder levels still sporting bucklers. Usually they are being turned into bloodstains ;).

Haha, I came up on the monumental kind of by accident--I ran up the stairs, ended up on the floor with the little guys and noticed the X to talk pop up as I ran across the balcony.
The monumental you talk to is the last living one. When I realized all the others around him were dead, I felt a little sad. :(

I actually did well with the buckler throughout all of 1-1 and didn't even upgrade +1 until after 1-2. But yeah, it's like a cardboard prop if you try to use it anywhere else. :p

Anyone got any tips for Old King Doran? Tried to take him on earlier, got him down to 1/4 health left and the bastard used a herb for full health.

Well, the easiest thing is
Cast Poison cloud or Death Cloud then run and hide. Rinse and repeat. He has like 3000hp or something like that.
. Alternatively, I hear there's
a pathing exploit where you can lure him out to the long bridge and backstab him when he gives up and starts to walk back to his original spot. I believe you'll need the thief's ring and of course a stabbing weapon. Apparently, you can keep doing this until he's dead.
Ok, so 4-1 was a cakewalk with the Dragon Long Sword as suggested. Any tips for the 4-1 boss before I head through the fog?
His right hand is the attack hand...
when you hear him tee-hee just go under that arm. You can roll if you want. Attack the blade stuck in his left side... when he goes down hit the bird on top of his head.
I beat this guy for the second time yesterday without getting hit.

EDIT - oh and you start out at the top... run to the bottom as quick as possible.. then start above strategy.

I beat 5-1. The boss fight (my second try) was a bit harder than I expected, but I eventually found a good hiding spot where the leeches wouldn't get me - I kind of stumbled into it actually. I suppose 2-2 is next...

Have the servers gone down today yet? If so, were any changes made?

They've seriously gotta address the WT bug, it can take up to 7 ephemeral stones to change from Pure white to pure black WT, and its some bullshit to turn off the game and come back and find out its back to neutral.

In the import version the work around for the WT bug was to log out in one of the worlds instead of the nexus.

Yeah, that is terrible. Luckily it hasn't messed me up and once I found out about it I make sure to do all my black WT business in one go.

Yeah I'm in Pure Black WT in World 4, cause I've stumbled upon the gold mine that Jodou was talking about (BP Black Skelly, 2x BP Gold Skelly, 2x Reapers = 140k each run). I've gotta play it offline until those stupid assholes fix this. It sucks cause I really enjoy watching people run through the game, and see what they're up to or wearing. Also I notice a lot of blood stains in the same places, thats always amusing.

So it sounds like no one knows if there was a patch, or if they were just doing maintenance, whatever the fuck that means? Lemme know if anyone finds out.

the box that the deluxe version came in is about the size of two games put together. one space is for the game, obviously, and the other is for both the strat guide (it's pretty small but its got like 160 pages) and the artbook w/ the cd inside.

as a big fan of video game music, i can safely say this soundtrack is awful. the main theme is absolutely painful to listen to. oh well, you rarely hear it unless you're fighting a boss, so i'm not complaining too much.

It doesn't seem like the artbook could fit in the box, though. It seems like the guide and game are a snug fit-- and that doesn't explain how people who got the normal edition could house the artbook and CD.

The artbook and enclosed cd was on the outside and seperate from the deluxe box. The artbook CD also came with the standard version. I would not suggest trying to fit it in the deluxe box.

Oh, okay. I figured so, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't going retarded and not seeing the obvious spot for the book (and plus I saw a few posts about people finding standard editions 'with the book and soundtrack included' leading me to believe it may be enclosed in the box somehow)

Thanks er'body!

FoS,

No problem I bought the standard edition and he had separate soundtrack CD's when i did that. When my Deluxe edition came in it had the artbook and cd shrinkwrapped to the outside like you said. I then took the actual sealed game back to gamestop.

But in both instances it was separate, I am 100% sure of it.

Gah, I've finally decided this game is EVIL. It's all I think about now! Lol.

Curse you, From Software...if Uncharted 2 and MW2 weren't out this year, you'd win GOTY easily from me.
Ah Snake is right, I ripped that shit open so quickly I probably didn't notice thats how it was packaged. Good show Snake!
I dont blame you I love the game and couldnt wait to get my copy open either!! I have taken a few days off but Thursday will have some more time again.

That didn't work for me when I just turned the whole system off. What's really annoying is I've beaten all four bosses in 4 without dying in living form, and I didn't have pure white WT and I couldn't figure out why. Then I read about the glitch. :bomb: I'm so addicted to this game, I'm ready to just never turn the game off. :D

Still waiting to get Uncharted 2. Personally not into MW2... so this may be my GotY. Just have to see... I know I love having such a great game in this genre finally.

Yeah, I'm also curious as to what was done. I get that WT bug all the time; sometimes I'd take a place pure black for an event and then quit. Next day it's pure white again lol. That and the server hangs after prolonged play where I stop seeing players, messages, et cetera even though I'm still logged in.

Not very impressive for online play I must say.

Oh, and did someone message me on PSN? Got some cold call about helping with blade stones from nobody I know. Really trying to get into Uncharted 2 but it's waaaaaaaaay too cinematic heavy so far. It feels too much like MGS in that respect and all the stealthing around is getting on my nerves. I just want to smash shit. For all the hype surrounding U2, I actually prefer the first game because it did a far better job of pacing gameplay with cinema IMO.

My GOTY is always based on how much do I keep wanting to play or get sucked in. Demon's Souls wins this year and L4D was it last year.

Thanks a lot, didn't even realize. That link is going in my favorites till i figure it out :). Doesn't seem very hard though.

Also, two more questions:

1) Where is the Dragon Long Sword?

2) I keep reading it, wtf does WT mean?
World Tendency.

Dragon Long Sword is somewhere in 2-2 I believe. I cant remember exactly... one of the more obscure and hard to reach corpses though.

It's in the tunnel with the bearbugs, it's easiest to take the left path in 2-2 and find it there, just keep exploring and you'll find it at a dead end.

I don't know what the fuss is about. this game is really frustrating. Having died and losing my souls then having to go all the way back just to get it back. there are no checkpoint options and the automatic saves are dumb. Combat is weak. Although I haven't given it much time but these problems are enough to convince me to play other games in my library until I have nothing else to play.

Saint Noir pointed this out a few pages ago, and I agree:

http://www.destructoid.com/demon-s-souls-the-ultimate-multiplayer-experience-152009.phtml

That said, this is not a mainstream game at all. Most players will give up on the game pretty quickly. Players who stick with it, do find something rewarding in the end.

Man... BP Satsuki was killing me... so I went and killed the primeval demon first. On top of killing that lizard and having it fall off the cliff with the loot... I died just past the 4-2 archstone heading back to 4-1. So, I spawned at 4-1. Went back to the Nexus so I could save my 100,000 souls. Forget about WT. I already got the white WT item in that world last play through.

Then I have to re-die a few times to get back to black WT... beat Satsuki by just no frills killing him. Did use the clever rat ring... but before I just took it to him... you should have seen my ridiculous strategies.

Totally hear you about being frustrated. I took me 5 hours to beat 1-1. I was on the edge of no return, literally a couple of clicks away from listing this on eBay and Goozex...just about to the brink and I finally beat 1-1. I was very happy, especially considering now I can actually start leveling up.

So far my cons for the game are;

1. No pause. This is just something that really should be included every game. Granted, you can go to system and quit the game and it'll save where you are at, but if I'm going to be away for say 10 minutes, It would be nice to just be able to pause the game. Same can be said with wanting to read through the strategy guide without fearing for your life...literally :)

2. Save system. Err...or there lack of said system. Multiple save files (for in case you fuck up at some point) would be nice, since I usually roll with quite a few save files when I play RPGs.

3. A better tutorial...or some form of helping the player early on with hints. Something, anything, you know?

While mutliple save slots would be sort of nice, I think that was definitely a design choice on this game. They want you to live with whatever consequences there are for your actions. While I didn't like it at first, I kind of do now.

As for pausing, there really isn't a need because once you clear an area (even a small one) you can sit there indefinitely and things will not attack you. Nothing ever moves off of fairly small set paths (and nearly all enemies are stationary in fact). The only place I can think of that you might get a surprise death is in 4-1 with the flying creatures if you weren't aware of them - and even they just loop around in the same area. But in most places you can move in, kill whatever is there, and just stand still and take a break. I have done this many times to come all the way downstairs to check the computer, eat a snack, whatever ;). Never once have I gone back up and seen my character dead. Note that I always play in soul form so I'm not worried about other players invading which I guess could happen if you just sat there in body form.

I also liked the way you are just sort of thrown into the game. Yeah, I had no idea what to do at first either but it didn't take long to figure out. There's very little punishment for getting beat up early so it is a good way to ease into the game.

Me too. There's consequences that force you to focus. For all the talk of how brutal the game is, dying isn't nearly as awful as I feared. If you can make it back to your pool o' blood, you're fine. It does add some drama if a tough enemy is between you and your stain.
As for pausing, there really isn't a need because once you clear an area (even a small one) you can sit there indefinitely and things will not attack you.
True, although when I first started the game I had a phone call and hit the start button, figuring that would pause it. Well, of course while I was talking on the phone I was watching my character standing still getting hacked to bits. Oops.

I'm loving this game so far. Just played through 1-1 and I had a blast. I went back there a couple times for some soul farming and the dragons were gone so I was able to pick up a few new items.

I was playing through Batman:AA before I started this, and I think Batman is going to have to wait a while.
