Demon's Souls - Atlus & From Software's Action RPG - October 6
Yeah, my starting buckler+1 is no match for the skellies. I'm gonna need to take out that dragon so I can grab the purple flame shield.
You can actually grab the Purple Flame Shield before taking down the Red Dragon, but you've gotta time acquiring it well.

Basically...
get to the bridge where the Dragon comes out and warns you not to cross...if you go too far, he'll spout fire and kill some of the guards on the bridge...and he'll keep spouting fire if you stick around too close to the bridge at this point.

Well, once you start approaching the bridge...LISTEN...and you'll hear him take off from his perch. Once you hear it, turn tail, run down the stairs to your right, run down the corridor, go outside, down the stairs left, and you'll see a whole bunch of treasure. The Blue Dragon is there, so watch his tail! In any event, if you time it well, you can grab the Purple Flame Shield at this point.

Just grab ONE item each time you do this...if you try for two in one run, you're likely to get toasted. Also, if you don't time your approach near the Blue Dragon well, he'll swat you with his tail.
I'm loving this game so far. Just played through 1-1 and I had a blast. I went back there a couple times for some soul farming and the dragons were gone so I was able to pick up a few new items.

I was playing through Batman:AA before I started this, and I think Batman is going to have to wait a while.
I've got a backlog of something like 50 games, and I just can't put this one down. I started off as a thief, and got about 5 hours into it...still hadn't finished 1-1.

Then on a lark, figured I'd try a Royal one morning, and finished 1-1 in about 2 hours. Then kept going...and abandoned my original character! Oops. =)

Best game of the year so far for me. MW2 will be great, and so will Uncharted 2, but there's something about this game...the challenge...crawling forward, being cautious, feeling like there's a real risk-reward system in place...feeling scared of heights, worrying what's next...

A lot has been said about the difficulty, and it's true, especially at the beginning. But I haven't once felt this game cheated me...I've been surprised, sure....I thought a Mind Flayer guy was a little further down the hallway and he was right in front of me when I turned the corner! My bad. But never felt short-changed by the game itself.

Anyway, enough rambling...back to DS.
2. Save system. Err...or there lack of said system. Multiple save files (for in case you fuck up at some point) would be nice, since I usually roll with quite a few save files when I play RPGs.
fuck that. The game wouldn't be half as good without the risk, especially in PvP. I'm spoiled by how pussy other games feel now. I hope more games follow suit now that someone finally had the balls to make a game for hardcore players.

Totally with this game in terms of risk. Half of the mechanics seem built around the risk factor. There would be no point at all in being very sneaky or cautious if I could just boot it up if something bad happened. Imagine False King with a weak way to save yourself... boss would be pointless.

My backlog is pretty small... but is growing larger as the holiday games start getting released and I continue to poor hours upon hours into this one. :D

Yeah, my WT or whatever is such where the dragon never comes by. Plus I want to kill it as I need to bump up my stats.

You only get 10k souls for killing it. You can spend less time and get more just farming the two blue knights right by the 1-2 archstone.

still, killing that huge ass dragon was pretty satisfying.

i still haven't beaten anything other than 1-1 so far, still trying to find some of the more essential items. i've been playing almost 10 hours, haven't done shit, but i am loving it. I've been distributing my stat points fairly evenly between int, magic, endurance, dex, and faith... should i be pouring them into anything specific?

Ok, so I've finished 4-1 and have 80,000 souls to spend.
Below are my stats, spells and weapons. Where should I dump the points?
Vit:23 Int:14 End:12 Str:19 Dex:14 Mag:14 Fth:13 Lck:9 -- Soul Level 40
Dragon L Sword +4, Dk Heater Shield +3, Winged Spear +6, Silver Catalyst
Magic: Soul Arrow, Flame Toss
Plate Leggings, Plate Gauntlets, Wizards Clothes
I'm also sitting on a few demon's souls (Iron, Swollen, Hard & Grey). Should I hold on to these?
I've been distributing my stat points fairly evenly between int, magic, endurance, dex, and faith... should i be pouring them into anything specific?
I beat the game by pretty much putting my points into nothing but magic and int. I put enough point into faith to get two miracles, and I put maybe 5-10 points into vit. Nothing into anything else.

Hold on to the demons souls as they can be traded in for unique spells and items. You can always farm for more souls but those demons souls will be gone forever.

Phew. Just finished 1-1 and 1-2 and this game is intense! Right now I'm a royal knight and I'm really not sure what to level up. I think I want to be a primarily magic user with melee to fall back on in case and am not sure what I should focus on right now. The red
dragon is a pain in the but though. I've died a fair share from him due to not being careful.
The bloodstains and messages really helped and I imagine the game was much harder at launch. Anyways if anyone wants to recommend where I should go from 1-2 I'd be appreciative.
BTW, Jodou, how bout them Dodgers? :)
Keep laughing all the way til NY crushes them. LA may win this game tonight, but I doubt they'll make it to the WS.

You should probably invest in the Evacuation miracle soon. It's 20K and you need a talisman to use it, but it's certainly worth it.

Go to 2-1.

Holy fuck. Garl Vinland is kicking my ass.

EDIT: killed him by using the dragon sword instead of the crescent falchion because apparently he's strong against magic. Warding also helped stop the insta kills from him. Those stupid bog creatures are ridiculous also.

Now I've finished everything except 1-4. I want to upgrade my weapons some more, but it seems like everyone gives crap for souls and drops.
Holy fuck. Garl Vinland is kicking my ass.
If it's the boss fight I personally would...
shoot arrows at the lady in the back from way up top... just take out her followers first.

You're a mind reader. I picked it up and dumped the rest into intelligence and magic for now. I have yet to visit 3-1 ... perhaps that's the next place to go since
the dragon at 2-3 (I think it's 2-3) is kicking my ass. I clear the first three pillars and then die every time. No luck on 4-2 either.

The Evacuation miracle is what? A spell? An item? Is it unlimited usage or one-time? I just want to be able to warp back to the Nexus, cash in my souls, and go back exactly where I was without having to go through an entire level.

... It's a miracle. miracle = priest spell
It'll take you back to the Nexus with all your souls, but you'll have to redo the level. Nothing will keep you from having to do that.

Don't know if this has been answered before, but if I buy the asian version of demon's souls can I play with the rest of the people who bet the US version?

Also

Pros/Cons of buying either version

Thanks

No, you cannot play with people on the US server. Pretty much the same game with slight naming variations. Also, you would experience a slight bit more lag since you would be playing on Asian servers.

BTW, SaintNoir, ChibiJosh, what Soul level are you guys and where are you in the game? Newgame+? What bosses have you beaten in NG+?

I'm Soul Level 171, just beat World 2, World 4, and I beat the Tower Knight. Haven't touched World 3 or 5 at this point though.

I'm lookin for some cool guys who destroy everything to play with :)

i have a question: can you only play online with people who are in the same playthrough as you? as in, if you're at NG+ do you only play with other NG+ players, or can you play with anyone?

I grinded the shit out of the black phantom skellies backtracking from the Old Hero 4-3 Archstone, that's the only reason why I'm 170 ChibiJosh lol.

I dunno about that erectiontown, I don't think anyone has a definitive answer to that question, Atlus hasn't addressed it as far as I know.
Wait, storm king?
No 4-4 archstone is where the stormking is, I'm talking about the 4-3 Archstone. Although they're really close together, it's obviously easier to start from the Old Hero Archstone (I think that's the 4-3 Archstone, as the 4-4 Archstone appears when you kill Storm King).

Anyway, basically
make WT black, make sure you have soulsucker, and thiefs ring, and a decent bow. Backtrack through the slug room and back to the third reaper, who'll be sitting up a long flight of stairs. Kill him, and then walk down the corridor. Start walking slowly, and kill the BP Black skelly with soulsucker. Keep walking slowly and kill the closest BP Gold Skelly with soulsucker. Run back a few steps so the other BP goldie turns around, then kill him with soulsucker too. Keep going, and you'll be in the big room with the 2nd reaper. Kill him with arrows, then teleport back to Nexus. With Ring of Avarice, this should net you around 150k souls every time.

It takes a few tries to get the spacing down, as you have to be close enough to hit em with soulsucker, but not too close or they'll turn around.

Definitely not enjoying this game. And it doesn't even have anything to do with the fact that its difficult! Its more that the games combat just feels boring and the exploration tedious.

I fear the reapers. During my first game, I summoned other people to kill them for me. Basically, I didn't do anything on 4-2. I don't have enough dex to use a bow.

I have to say I'm starting to get sick of this game and wondering if some stuff is bugged. In 2-1 when I'm in phantom form some times I get 2 souls for every kill and end up leaving the room with maybe 50 or so souls and other times I end up leaving with 200-300 souls from that same room. I have also had where I was just running only didn't even have the controller in my hands. Other times I have been running and changed from holding the weapon with one hand to holding it with two. Some times in mid fight.

Also is their an item or something that regenerates MP with out having to use spices?
you're definitely in the minority, pal
Maybe but I think its more about hype and the community experience. This game is very similar to the Kingdsfield series and yet no one blew up about those games, hell the same pros giving this game great buzz gave KF a bunch of 6s. Im not saying this is a bad game, just saying its not for me and I think people are really buying into the hype/community experience. Ill drop it now though since I dont want to derail the thread when the rest of you are enjoying it.

Ah are you a magic user? It's really REALLY useful to have the ability to use a bow, I really don't know how I would play some areas without it. Keep in mind I'm like, 70/30 melee/range, and I use magic just to kill geckos or farm souls.

I'd highly suggest trying to use a bow.
Fragrant Ring and any weapon with the "Crescent" prefix

Yeah, I'm a magic user. I have like 40 Int/Magic and 10 Str/Dex
Jeez, how did you beat the boss of 5-3? Doesn't he have a lot of magic resistance or something?
Meat cleaver rapes him and knocks him down every fierce swing, so that's one way to kill him. He's pretty easy if you just bait his attacks and move in when he's defenseless.

 171!?

I'm at around 47 or so. Last night I just ground out 2 or 3 levels (reapers and then the bearbugs). I'm trying to get my dexterity up now so I can beat the 5-1 boss with arrows. His regen rate was too high last time. I guess I may also try the Clever Rat's Ring trick on it and maybe use another ring to boost attack. I have always forgotten to maximize my ring usage (as I usually just use some combo of the cling ring/fragrant ring/regen ring/thef's ring). But in fighting the bugbears I equipped the Kris blade plus a magic enhancing ring and upped my soul arrow damage from 60-something to 120 or so! That may help me on that 5-1 boss as well as for both arrows and magic I could get him down but not enough to completely counteract his regen. But I wasn't being clever with the ring usage. So after grinding out a few more levels that I put into dexterity (for increased damage with the sticky compound long bow) I can try to take him down. I'll let one of those club dudes beat me down to under 30% HP for the Clever Rat's Ring.

I went to the bugbear area to try to get some of the treasure in the lava. I must be missing some key equipment because even with a flame resistance ring and the "water" spell cast on me, I only have about 5 seconds in the lava before death. That was enough to pick up the dragonstone shard the bugbear dropped at the edge of the lava but not nearly enough to run out and get the treasures. The "picking up" animation almost did me in. One time my health bar looked completely gone - seriously, I must have had 1 HP left! And that was just from picking something up right at the edge. Is there armor somewhere that has high flame resistance? How are you guys getting that stuff otherwise?

But man, I've been playing a lot and have yet to hit many of the bosses. I'm taking it very slowly and trying to get all the WT events but that means very little main game progress. I did finally go save Ostrava in 1-2 last night - figured it was about time to let him out ;). I need to take down that 5-1 boss and then I'll do the stone of ephemeral eyes/suicide thing in Stonefang tunnel to try to get to BP Scirvir. But I've been playing for 36 hours and have just done the following bosses: 1-1, 1-2 (red dragon and tower knight), 2-1, 3-1, and 4-1. That's a lot of time put in for just 5 bronze trophies .

Also, have you tried using flaming arrows/flame toss on 5-1? Or turpentine w/your weapon and fire bombs?

No, Jodou, I was asking ChibiJosh cause he's a magic user, who uses no bows or no melee. I was curious how he beat 5-3 cause doesn't that armor have really high magic resistance? Just curious.

I've only fought him once, and I didn't fight him, I fought his 'girlfriend' :)
 171!?
Pfft, he's got 50 levels still to catch up to me and I stopped grinding last weekend.

Warding and dragon sword are your friend. He seriously goes down like a bitch.

I don't waste my time on them lol. It's seriously not worth the effort.

He's actually pretty easy if you want to cheese him.
As you know, the AI is pretty awful so you can just make him back off the cliff and die. No joke, just keep a shield up and keep backing him up right off the cliff. Don't worry about the loot, just load your game and his corpse will spawn in the same place you first spot him.

Oh word lol.

Oh, I hear if you have high END, flame resist ring, water veil, hp regen, and flame resist shield you can walk into the lava to pick stuff up. Apparently blocking w/flame resist shield does help.

On the other hand, I dunno if the items out there are really worth all the trouble anyways.

Oh yeah, the flame arrows. Now who sells those again? I bought some before but I forgot where.

I thought someone here said they were worth getting which is why I was trying. Oh well, I'll come back later and try it.

Jodou - what is special about the dragon sword on the 5-1 boss? I do have that but it didn't seem like it had any special abilities when I checked out it's stats.

Not only is it a fast weapon, but it also has bonus fire damage built in that scales with your magic stat. The boss is extremely vulnerable to fire damage and mages can one shot the thing with firestorm.

I'm just that good.

No, it just took patience. I cast warding on myself, and then took my sword two-handed and chopped like a motherfucker. Run away before warding wore off, let it ware off and repeat.
