where do I get a talisman so I can cast miracles? there's an explanation in the guide for 2-2, but it seems way too complicated. i just spent 20000 souls on evacuate, but now can't cast it!!
There is a relatively easy one to grab in 4-1 before the first fog. Just don't go in with lots of souls, the first encounter with skeletons can go badly.
It does make sense though. Perhaps not the slave shields but a Bastard or Claymore sword, an upgraded shield? Surely lower level characters would like to buy those. I mean, the whole point is upgrading your weapons throughout the game. Do what Fallout 3 did and limit the amount of souls each seller/NPC has. This would keep players from abusing the system but allow them to get some extra souls and unload useless (to them) items.
If there were a system where you could sell items to other players then I could see it, but selling to NPCs doesn't make sense. I mean, the blacksmith in the nexus constantly remarks on how he needs your souls.
Ok so if I didn't pick a class that starts with magic how long do I have to wait to get some spells? I've been leveling up my magic a little just so when I could learn a spell I'd be able to use it.
Rats, the file save is write-protected and they won't let you copy it to another storage device or PS3. I can see why, but now I'd have to start a new game on the PS3 in the main room.

isn't their another one in 5-1? I tried to get the one in 4-1 but them skeletons are just so damn quick. Also I don't have much to get back MP so it almost seems pointless to use MP right now.

Yeah, I think I picked one up early in 5-1 as well. I would much rather deal with skeletons than the creaky boards of 5-1. Prolly just me though.
EDIT - yeah, equip a catalyst and remember the spell from the teacher.
What soul level are you? I think if you hit a soul level and place a blue stone where similar soul leveled players wouldn't be then you probably won't get summoned. Basically out-leveling an area.
Oh I dunno - about 50 or so. I guess that could be why - definitely too high for 1-2 and 2-1. I guess I thought that only applied to player vs player setup and not the summoning for help. So you have to be in the same range for summoning too? I guess I need to stick to 2-2, 4-2, and maybe 5-1 for that then. I'd try helping on 2-3 but that one doesn't seem to lend itself to summoned help too much. You might just get in each other's way.
Anyone know of a good spot to farm/buy Shard of sharpstone, Large shard of sharpstone, chunk of shardstone and Spiderstones? Trying to make Large sword of searching and Sticky CPLB +5 =p

Funny that you mention that because I am also trying to upgrade the bow with spiderstones and am having a hell of a hard time finding them. Sharpstones, on the other hand, drop like candy from a pinata. I have oodles of them - I guess I shoudl start working on that sword. I'm not sure what the wiki says, but a place where you can get both is the group of miners off to the right at the beginning of 2-2. I think the pickaxe ones drop sharpstones and the fist-fighting ones drop spiderstones (though only very very rarely for me). I also seem to get nothing but sharpstones from the geckos in world 2. It is highly annoying.
The mini-phalanx creatures at the beginning of 1-2 also drop sharpstones (as well as hardstones). Of course I keep going there to get hardstones (for my shield) and all I get are sharpstones.

So yeah, sharpstones should not be a problem...
Yeah I knew the mini-phalanx drops sharpstones, just thought since I'm asking might as well include it to see if anyone else would have a better location. Right now I'm not so worry about getting shard of sharpstones, but more worry about finding Large, Chunks and Pure. Hopefully I will have enough eventually.
I started a new game on the other PS3 last night, just for giggles. Almost beat Vanguard in the tutorial. Died once in 1-1 because I tried the stairs pathing trick on the red eyes knight and he broke his way through the barrels instead of trying to go around them. >_<
Just to find out early on, do enemies level up with you or does grinding actually give you an advantage in this game?
The enemies don't "level", so yeah, farming does help a lot. You can also farm for items like hard/sharpstones, etc.. You just need to find the enemies appropriate to your soul level since each type yields only a fixed amount of souls and you'll outgrow them eventually.
Just to find out early on, do enemies level up with you or does grinding actually give you an advantage in this game?
Huge advantage. Once you hit about 50 VIT and SL 150, nothing can really touch you. Nothing can one-shot me anymore and with warding on, anything is a joke. My last play-through was flawless; zero deaths.
Thanks, I've yet to move onto 1-2. Soul lvl 16 just doesn't seem high enough yet considering the 712 level cap. I may take the Red-Eyed Knight out a couple mores times and then move on. Right now I have a few shards of some stones, should I save those for now and somehow combine them to make a whole stone (if possible) or should I just use them to upgrade my weapons right now?

I want to lean towards pure mage so I've been leveling up my Magic and some Faith. My 3 main attributes are likely going to be VIT, MAGIC, and either FAITH or LUCK (for drops)...tips/suggestions?

You're ready to go on, especially if you can beat the red knight. I don't think more red knights show up till 1-3.

I did 1-2 right after 1-1 and it was fine. I'm a little suprised you can take out red eyes since those are level 30.
Anyway, since you can't combine stones, and the kinds of stones you can get at your level are easily farmed, you might as well use them to upgrade your weapons and shield. You can check the wiki to see what the upgrade paths are if you are considering upgrading special weapons/shields.

You want Int, Magic, and Faith then Vit and others. I wouldn't raise luck yet, seems wasted early on since you will need at least 4 playthroughs to get a platinum anyway, no point in boosting luck now.
I want to lean towards pure mage so I've been leveling up my Magic and some Faith. My 3 main attributes are likely going to be VIT, MAGIC, and either FAITH or LUCK (for drops)...tips/suggestions?
I found the game very melee-friendly, so I can't really speak for mages. VIT is a must for every class, though. Having 1500 HP is night and day when taking on bosses. Luck is worthless, I wish the old de-level trick worked because I'd take mine to -99. Faith only has one offensive spell, God's Wrath, so I'd only take that as far as you need to unlock the slots you need (four total). Magic and Int will be your bread and butter.
Don't invest in luck. You can't sell items, and most of the better items are looted from the map locations. It also doesn't seem like luck really affects drop that much.
And people say to invest into endurance (at least 40 for max end bar) asap instead of vit, since dodging/blocking is more important in preserving life. But it really depends on how you play. If you're able to consistently dodge and find yourself running out of endurance quick, then bump up endurance. If you get hit instead invest in vit, at least so you don't get OHKO'ed.
Since you're leaning towards mage, you might want to invest mainly in magic and intelligence (up to 30 for at least 200 mp). Faith is ok, but magic defense is really overshadowed by dodging, and you really need a faith focused build if you plan on using God's Wrath. Blessed weapons are nice though.

Concentrate on your person more than upgrades, you will find the better weapons as you move on. I saved a ton of stuff and am finding I still need to farm, to get my weapons where I want.

Yeah I'm having this problem too. The wiki says spider stones are found only in 2-1 and 2-2 but even after beating both levels and doing 10-15 farming runs on the beginning of 2-2 I haven't found a single shard yet (although I have some chunks and a pure). If it's going to take 200 farming runs just to get the 3 shards I need for a level 1 sticky bow I think I give up.
Also 5-2 was easy as hell. Just like with 5-1 I never really came very close to dying at all.
The boss went down from just some basic strafing with some back stabbing.
And this time I didn't even have help... most of the time. I had to play the second half while the servers were down hehe.
Best advice for spiderstone is to run from 2-2 archstone right and kill those miners. Only fist miners drop spiderstone. Run off cliff, repeat. You may have to do it a ton of times. TON. I ended up just getting my bow to level 4 and upgrading all the way in the next game.

See, I'm level 50 and I have found 5-2 to be the hardest yet by far. There's tons of those stupid big club dudes and one hit and they kill me, even with my shield up. That's the difference between being a ranged/magic user and a tank though (we discussed this before in relation to 5-1 which I also had trouble with - not dying so much but taking a lot of time since I had to snipe those big dudes and then run when they came afetr me). There's also a super-fast black phantom with a huge sword down in the lower part of that level. he wiped me out every time I tried to take him on. There's some treasure being guarded by 3 or 4 of those big guys though and I didn't even try to get that - will get it later. Then I finally made it all the way past those things and there's some wierd versions of the little enemies who are normally weak but these have some glowing purple stuff and one killed me from afar when I wasn't paying attention. I guess he's casting spells at me but it was hard to tell. I gave up after that and went to do other stuff.
I think I've put a total of 2 or 3 extra points in vitality in my 50+ levels. Maybe I should do some more.
I was pumping up my luck a bit (but only to 10). I figured kind of the opposite of all of you - I thought increasing the drop chance EARLY would mean over the long haul I'd get more stones and have to do less tedious farming later. I do get a lot of different stones with the exception of those stupid spiderstones...
try doing it in pure black WT, i got at least 1 or 2 EVERY RUN when i killed the dudes in 2-2 in pure black WT, it has a huge influence on drop rate.
I did a bit of that and got NOTHING more than normal. I did the black world 2 stuff and then got it back to white again. It didn't seem to make any difference. I get one spiderstone about every 20 fist dudes that I kill. And it sucks because there are only 2 or 3 in the mine section so it means lots of trips. I guess if I have leftover ephemeral eyes after doing the rest of the WT events I can lower it there again and try some more. It is just highly annoying that the guide says by the point I'm at now I should be able to get the sticky bow to +5. I have it at +3 and that took a lot of work. I'm a long way from getting it to 4, let alone 5 - and that's with tons of farming in 2-2.
Well, if you beat all the bosses in World 2, you should be able to get the crystal geckos in 2-1 about 3-4 times each. They are the only ones that drop spiderstone chunks and shards, you shouldn't need a pure since you get one from armor spider.
If you have Pure Black WT though, theres a much higher chance for getting chunks or even a pure from the crystal lizards.

I've killed that 2-1 gecko (the one near the beginning) at least 4 times and all I get are sharpstone shards. From some of the others I've gotten other stuff and I even got a pure clearstone from the one by the dragon god (and was at pure white WT at the time to boot). But I've gotten very few spiderstones from all that. I do have the pure of course which is what makes it all the more frustrating not to get the easy ones - I have a few chunks, even, but no shards!
Is there a second crystal gecko on 2-1 besides the one at the very beginning? If so I haven't taken full advantage of that one yet. I've tapped out the beginning one and the one at the start of 2-2 though. Of course there is the nest which I haven't gone to yet, but I'm waiting for the god's wrath miracle before I do that.
Edit - Hah, crap. I was all excited about the pure clearstone I got from the 2-3 gecko but I just read that that is the same thing Ostrava gives you when you save him in 2-3. DAMN! It really is too bad you can't at least selk the stones (esp. extra pure ones!). I have taken such good care of that Ostrava moron and all for nothing, apparently .
So, as a rundown of the pure stones, here are the "hard" ones:
1) Clearstone - saving Ostrava (not that hard)
2) Graystone - show Scirvir the Dragon Bone Smasher in pure white WT (I just did this)
3) Bladestone - a tough one, only from the black phantom black katana skeletons on 4-2 and also apparently from the one in the hidden passage (also on 4-2) when using sword of searching in pure black WT - I guess I'll have to make that sword as I was just about to go in there!
4) Moonlightstone - only from geckos in 3-2, 3-3
5) Darkmoonstone - only from geckos in 4-2, 4-3
6) Faintstone - 5-2. 5-3 geckos but also apparently from the woman near Urbain but only after you rescue him but before you learn any miracles. Oh, amd faith has to be over 20. Seems like in NG+ you can get this easily enough though.
The rest are either from archstones (after boss fights) or are in the crystal gecko nest or the plague swamp. So, really, the only genuinely tough ones are the ones you can only get from random drops: bladestone, moonlightstone, and darkmoonstone.
OK, that wiki guide is somewhat misleading - or at least missing info.
I know you can use hardstones to upgrade the purple flame shield to +10 but they don't even have it listed there.
However, it also says you can go from +6 to the "Dark Purple Flame Shield" using cloudstones. I have a TON of these from the manta ray things so I'm wondering if I should do that. I don't have the guide handy (it is 2000+ miles away right now ) so could someone look up the advantage/disadvantage of the regular purple flame shield + 10 vs the dark purple + 5?
Or I could keep going with the +10 on the purple flame shield and make a Dark Heater Shield +5... Not sure...

The main difference between Dark and the other branch is that Dark is mainly for Magic Resist. Unfortunately, the damage absorption doesn't scale up like in the "regular" branch. I'm not sure if Magic Resist is as important if your dodge/roll are good.
-According to the wiki, the dark shield +5 offers 70% magic resistance and 90% fire resistance vs 30% magic and 90% fire of the purple shield +10. The +10 shield does offer 82 hit resistance vs 60 on the dark shield, which according to the wiki:
The HitRes stat affects how much Stamina is required to block. It lowers the amount of Stamina drained when blocking attacks, and reduces the Stamina required to block "strong" attacks without breaking guard.
Blue Dragon is giving me a hard time on 1-4. Can't make it up the stairs without getting killed. So far, after beating all the levels, world five was the worst by far. I hated the limited visibility, being poisoned almost always, and the danger of falling off ledges. It sucks that I'm going to miss out on a lot of the white tendency stuff but I'll focus on that in my new game +. I suppose I could still kill myself and revive with the ephemeral eyes until pure black to at least get those items from the black phantoms...
One more thing, if I go to kill sage freke for his armor before fighting the final boss, will his subordinate start attacking me?
I'm using a barbarian (I'm a sucker. Ever since Diablo...), at level 11. Beat the Red Eye guy at level 9 (have only beaten him once since). For the longest time I was getting frustrated from getting killed every three seconds... then I found the guy selling armor. Heh. Now I'm making more steady progress, and use a claymore for crushing power. I know I'm probably not using the best set-up, but I can always make other characters. I ran up to ledge of land right under the dragon in 1-1 and got the flame shield... he cooked me right after I got it, but I was level 9. Still too weak to use it, by the way. ha.
He only sells basic stuff, you didn't miss out on a whole lot. It does make the early part of the game easier to have a set of armor, though. Also, did anyone else find it strange that the boss in 1-1 was far easier than most of the enemies in the stage?
IMO that NPC seller doesn't carry anything better than what I can loot from stuff I kill or stuff I can find randomly. I'd save my souls for leveling, spells, weapon/armor upgrades, or repairs.
1-1 is just for starters. Maybe even just an extension of the tutorial, if you want to look at it that way. The hardest things in there are the red dragon and red eyes knight.

You thought that boss was easy? Unless you mean either the red knight or the dragon it was the hardest thing on the stage for me (probably harder than the red knight). There are two sets of stairs on both sides of the room toward the back. If you quit, you should begin exactly as you are now (make sure you go into the menu and quit to title screen first).
