From one of the finest and most intense series of games in the action genre, here we have yet another heart-pounding edition to the Devil May Cry series. Devil May Cry 4 takes place "on the coast of a distance land in the castle town of Fortuna" and the game starts off with our main protaganist, Nero, witnessing the the death of Sanctus, who happens to be the leader of a group called The Order of the Sword's. You then take control of your new protaganist and begin your journey for the biggest and most epic battle that the Devil May Cry series has seen yet.

In Devil May Cry 4, you'll witness probably some of the best graphics, sound and gameplay of any game from 2008 and in my opinion deserves Action Game of the year for 2008.

Our New Protaganist For Devil May Cry 4, Nero

Gameplay - 4 out of 5

Devil May Cry 4 would have gotten a 5 in the gameplay aspect if you had been able to interract with the enviornment more. It's gameplay is good though, so don't get me wrong, it's just not fantastic like it could have been. The controls are super easy to master and the combos are flawless. The game has a rating system at the end of each level, just like past Devil May Cry games which should keep you coming back for more. The weapons are the best that I've seen in the series, and the acrobatics really work well while you're "bustin' shots" into you're foes "dome piece". The swordplay is beautiful as well and all the boss battles are very memorable and probably the best I've seen in the series.

All depending on skill and which difficulty you select, the game can take you anywhere between 10-20 hours to complete. Also like I mentioned above, there's several unlockable weapons to earn as you play through the storyline and lots of stuff to destroy so you can easily get lost in gameplay by just merely killing enemies.

Dante's Back And Better Than Ever

Story - 4 out of 5

A game usually has to have a good story to keep it's audience interested. DMC 4 doesn't have an amazing story, but it does have a good one. Hack and Slash games are somewhat known to deliver more on the "kick ass-ness" of the game then to deliver on a deep and gripping story. DMC 4 here goes as deep as the basic storyline of the series will let it. You can't have anything to deep, but I did find myself getting lost in certain parts of the story and then saying "Wow" after the cutscene ended. The story for Devil May Cry 4 is the best story I've ever witnessed from a hack and slash game.

Sound - 4.8 out of 5

I played the game on a 15" LCD screen and the game and sound popped out at me. I could only imagine it on a Plasma with a Bose sound system... woah. The game definitly delivers in the sound department, as you get some pretty memorable sound effects that relate to the enviornment and/or different boss battles you may be in. Fire pops, your sword makes a cool "ching" sound when it hits walls and a memorable "shlump" sound as you cut away at your foes.

Did It Just Get Hot In Here...?

Graphics - 4.6 out of 5

DMC 4 definitly brings the goods, graphics wise. The characters and enviornments are super smooth and very well designed. Nero somewhat reminded me of Raiden from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty and Dante looked like he was designed after GoldenEye's famous villian, 006 (Sean Bean) but the nowadays version. As you can see in some of the screens available, the graphics are probably the best of its time and they really shine in HD.

Replay Value - 4.2 out of 5

Now myself, I have had plently of replay value out of DMC 4, but for the masses when it comes down to hack and slash games, it'll probably be played 2-3 times. I've had a killer though ranking up my level scores and trying to dominate on the hardest group of achievements I've seen. I don't know why but it seems that Capcom enjoys making the achievements in their games, the hardest of any game you'll ever play... ever. But none the less, the replay value is quite good if you get bored and feel like cutting some demons in half with a big sword.

Overall - 4.3 out of 5

It would be an understatement to say that this game is anything below great. If you're looking for a game that has nonestop action, flawless graphics, intense AI and everything you've come to know and love from past Devil May Cry games, then this is the game for you, because Devil May Cry 4 delivers in every way a hack and slash game can. Whether you've played past DMC games or whether you're new to the series, this is the game to get if you're into the hack and slash/action genre.

Now would especially be a great time to get DMC 4 considering Capcom has just released a Platinum Hits triple pack. The Triple Pack includes Platinum Hits copies of Devil May Cry 4, Dead Rising and Lost Planet Extreme Conditions: Colonies Edition, all games I'd highly recommend to any gamer and at the price of $36.99 at Amazon.com. I'd definitly capatilize on this sweet deal, especially considering the care they gave to this package to release it in a nice boxset instead of all in one case. You get a nice box to to stick your three capcom Platinum Hits games in, and it spruces up the look of your collection.

PS3 VS. Xbox 360

For those of you who want this game but don't know which console to get it for, this might make things a little easier for you on your decision. Devil May Cry 4 is a great game for both consoles depending on your tastes.

Gameplay: The PS3 version takes it, gameplay wise, and not because all the other DMC games were on the Playstation 2 but because it plays a lot smoother on the PS3 then it does on the Xbox 360. There was also a download for the PS3 version that made it so DMC4 has no load screens. Though the download is a whopping 5 GB, it's totally worth it. Winner: Playstation 3

Sound:
Devil May Cry 4 on the PS3 is also better audio wise too considering the PS3 version includes 5.1 LPCM audio which makes it sound a lot better if you're playing it on your Playstation 3 console. Winner: Playstation 3

Graphics: The PS3's version of DMC4 looks better graphically, at least to me and 1UP anyways. It looks fabulous on the Xbox 360 as well, but the graphics looks a lot better on the PS3 version. Winner: Playstation 3

Overall - Playstation 3

Now if you're into the quality of the game, then I'd recommend getting DMC4 on the Playstation 3 most definitly. If quality isn't all that big to you, then it might comfort Xbox fans to know that DMC4 doesn't have trophy support. Other then that though, the PS3 version slaughters the Xbox 360 version.

I recommend creating a blog here on CAG for all your reviews. This way people can give constructive feedback and also check out your other reviews quite easily.

Thanks for the advice man. I'm new to the site so everything here was all new to me at first but you're advice is quite good and I appreciate it.

Awesome review man. I realise that this thread is a bit old now but I do agree with you about the PS3 thing. I only got it on xbox because I don't have a PS3, but I've heard it plays so much better on a PS3 (the console it was origionally made for)
And 5GB for no loading screens? wow!

Graphically the PS3 outdoes the 360 so that's why it will always look much better on there, I have the 360 version because at the time when DMC4 came out I didn't have a PS3 but now I regret getting it for the 360.

I played it on both systems too and agree that the superior version is the PS3 one. However, it is still a good time on the 360, so if that's all you have, do not worry.

I dig DMC4 more than most, even though it was not quite as good as DMC3, nor did it beat out my nostalgia factor with DMC1. I thought the addition of Nero was brilliant, but the replaying of certain levels later in the story felt like a drag.

It is too bad that DMC4 seemingly forced Capcom's hand into 'rebooting' the franchise with the god-awful direction they are currently taking it in.

Im glad they made Dante look more badass because they seriously screwed him up in DMC2.
