Do you always get the 2nd game inside?

Basically, at stores like Target or Walmart, they put their games behind the glass case, and you have to ask the cashier to get a game out for you. Do you take the first copy in the case, or do you get the second one behind it?

I always get the 2nd one inside, since the 1st is usually "bad." It's a superstition, I guess. The 1st is usually returns, which can have loose discs, cut/dirty shrinkwrap, etc. The 2nd one inside is usually untouched. The cashier usually tells me that it doesn't matter which one I get, but that's not true. The first is always "jinxed," according to one similar game buyer I met.

At stores where all games are laid out for you to pick by yourself, like Best Buy, I usually get the one in the middle.

How about you guys? I've always wanted to know your buying preferences.

I don't think I'm that particular with games, but I have a tendency to do something similar with printed matter (books, magazines, comics, etc.), since the copies in the back haven't been flipped through a dozen times like the one on top. Nothing superstitious, just me being picky.

I do it with food at the grocery store--especially refrig or frozen items. The front one may have been one someone didn't want after it sat at the register all day till the end of day re-stock.

I ask for them to get one out of the storage room from a freshly opened box. I put on my rubber gloves for when they hand it to me. Then I wash it down with rubbing alcohol and hand sanitizer in the car. I usually never get around to playing it because I have to wash off my controllers and my couch when I get home because germs could've gotten on them while I was out. Then I have to take a long shower because I got germs on me while I was out.

OMG me too!

I've never thought about shit like that. I don't collect games, I just get them, play them and sell them. Hell, I get the majority of my games used off Goozex these days so obviously I don't care about the disc being losed, scratched (as long as it plays) etc.

Just carry a blow torch and clean everything with fire.

blam, how you like that? crazy is what you all be thinking, but we each have our own superstitions, so rock out with your cock out and have fun! Good luck on not getting a lemon!

I generally don't get games in retail stores because I don't want the employees touching my game and dirtying the plastic wrap with their filthy, plebeian hands.

Well, you know if you get a lemon they have this wonderful new invention in retail called exchanges.

I am a collector and like to look through a few copies to make sure I get a cover that is in good shape with no visible creases, dents or tears. If I ever sold any used games to Gamestop, I am sure they would reseal them and sell them as new. I blame my collecting of Baseball cards when I was young giving me my collectors OCD since they needed to be nice and mint with sharp corners.

The only time I ever do something like that is with frozen foods and the like. As someone stated above, people have a tendency to re-stock the front with frozen foods that have been out in the open for several hours. Even worse, think about that yogurt package or milk that has been sitting out only to be put back in late in the day by some kid.

I do it with almost everything I buy, I usually go for the middle. The ones in the front are usually handled more, so I would think it has a higher chance of defect.

This is stupid. What if there were more than one return? The second one be "jinxed" also. And what if someone picked up a game, flipped it a few times, then set it back in the middle? Uh oh- that's the one you grabbed.

Good lord, it's just a game. It does not matter.

You go in the store and breath the same air as retail clerks? Ugh. Double ugh. I mean, just totally, completely, ugh.

Also, your roommate had sex on your couch while you were showering.

This. I definitely do it when buying used textbooks since I hate copies with hightlighter markings and underlining from previous owners.

Yes, when they have the games out on the floor I usually get the one in the middle and shake/inspect it before buying it. But then again, I shake and inspect everything I buy. I once had a gamestop employee give me a copy of a game that was sealed but the disk was loose inside(he shook it before handing it to me), I was like "give me another one" then he said,"nothings wrong with it bro, just take it"...He eventually gave me another copy after the manager chewed his ass out.

I hate it when I get copies that have deep razor cuts due to whoever opened being ignorant and careless.
Today at Best Buy there was only one copy of Ninja Gaiden II left. What do you do then? WHAT THE fuck DO YOU DO THEN?!?!!???!
Get a raincheck for the next time they come in stock.

Magazines and newspapers yes, games...no. Just...no.

And with more popular games, the first one might have been the second (or third, or fourth) one a few minutes ago. In places like Best Buy that allow you 'hands on' with the merchandise directly, where the game occupies two rows, vertically oriented, is the first game on the bottom stack 'better' than the second or third on the top stack? Should one avoid all copies on displays specifically constructed for that game? Endcaps?

I just remembered another thing I saw at Gamestop, this was several years ago though. The guy opened the case to get me a copy of MGS:TTS, and he dropped it and then grabbed the next one in the case for me and put the dropped one in the front.

Make sure you bring your tongs to get the rain check from the CSR and your own pen!

I sometimes do that when I can grab the game myself. I just look at the condition of the boxes and grab the one looks best.

OK....what do you do when you order a game and choose in store pick up? When you get there the customer service person already has the game behind the counter for you waiting. What do you do? WHAT THE fuck DO YOU DO!??! AHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!!

I've worked my way around that. :D

Say it's for Ninja Gaiden II at BB in-store pickup.

Come to BB to pick up, and it's already there waiting. It's $10 but in bad condition.

Simple: Go to any other store that has it in stock, buy it there, then take the BB copy, return to the other store with its receipt.

A bit of work for a nice condition game! :applause:

I always get the first copy you are all paranoid. The games are all sealed new of course! If it wasn't shrink wrapped or something strange I would ask for a different copy.

I always get the 4th copy of anything I buy. It has nothing to do with condition, superstition, or the game/dvd/book being a "return". It's called OCD. I'm not talking full-blown OCD but many people do have OCD-like tendencies.

If it's the last copy or everything is disorganized on an endcap, I will just buy whichever one. It's not really a big deal. I'm crazy, not nuts.

Honestly, I don't think I have ever asked a clerk to give me a different copy, unless there is something extra packed with it (The Prince of Persia LE over Regular, and the store was charging the same, so I went for the LE)

I understand your thinking behind this, but it just seems useless, there are just so many permutations that defeat your reasoning. But good luck with it.

Well, if I'm in a store buying a game I'll try to look for the "nicest" one, with the fewest scuffs/dings or whatever... I don't think that's too unusual. But 99% of my games come from Amazon anyway, so I don't see it until it arrives. As long as it's sealed and doesn't look like it's been run over, I'm good.

I've done that a few times as well. I once got a horribly sliced KOTOR from Target at cheap price (it was of course the only one they had). Accept that? No way. I bought a flawless one at Best Buy paying double, then returned the sliced one to BB the next day. Problem solved \\:D/

This thread isnt about picking up the nicest looking copy. This thread is about ALWAYS grabbing the 2nd or 3rd game back because the 1st one or 2 could be returns or have been handles a lot by other people. No one is going to pick up a fucked up game and shrug it off....but other people have no problem grabbing the first game which is mint and walking out with it. The OP has a problem with this.

Stay on the nut-case topic!

They are.

I sometimes do that at stores. I know when I pick up a PSN Card at Meijer, I'm known to choose the 2nd one.

When I use to turn in papers at school (like in a pile), I wouldn't put my paper on top of everyones, I'd put mine 2 or more papers under someone.

I dunno, I just have this strange habit.
