These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Is there any way to look at what the previous values reported on a game?
You can search through this thread and previous ones to see what a game has been reported in the past. With the TIV Tracker you can sort by date and then go through the list of past updated values through that as well. Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

I don't want to get hassled about the values I post, how can I get the information out there?
If you do not feel comfortable or willing to put the values in the thread you have two options available. You can input them in the TIV tracker or you can send them to me via PM. Either way the database and these lists will be updated. Putting them into the TIV tracker does save me some time later on.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

What are the refurb fees on games?
There appears to be set prices for set value ranges. We aren't 100% certain on the splits just yet. Here is what we have currently:
$0.25-$2 Value: $0.75 Refurb Fee
$2.01-$4 Value: $1 Refurb Fee
$4.01-$7 Value: $2 Refurb Fee
$7.01-$10 Value: $3 Refurb Fee
$10.01 & Higher Value: $4 Refurb Fee
This information isn't guaranteed by any mean and we are still working on nailing it down.

What are the refurb fees on consoles?
They are listed in the hardware TIV section, highlight in red.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Why didn't the percent bonus go for my accessory for a system that was included?
Unless stated otherwise, and they are rarely included, the bonuses never apply to accessories. Except the PowerUp Rewards card of course.

I traded in a bunch of games for the "Trade X, get $X bonus" promo and it gave me the percentage bonus instead?
I can't give concretes on why this happens. GameStop computers are normally pretty good at giving you the better promo. In the case of a percentage bonus being run at the same time as a "Trade X, get $X" promo, things can get messy. The system appears to only give one promo on games per transaction so if you had a few games that you want to go to the percentage bonus and a stack for the "Trade X, Get $X" it will regularly apply the percentage to all of the games. Your best bet is to do all "Trade X, Get $X" games in one transaction on their own. The GameStop clerk may say that the system will figure it all out, tell them you want a separate transaction anyway. As always, check your receipt before you leave the store.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and put a refurb fee on the console. The refurb fee on the console will vary on the price of the console so those numbers will change. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above.

What is the difference between PowerUp Rewards and PowerUp Rewards Pro?
The basic card is free and only allows you to acrew points when spending money. The Pro card costs $14.99 and is basically the same as the previous EDGE program.

How much does a PowerUp Rewards Pro subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an PowerUp Rewards Pro card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game, extra 10% off the purchase of pre-owned games and 10% off new strategy guides.

Does the Power Up Rewards Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on. However, if you look at the wordings on promos, they can remove the bonus trade-in value if they decide to.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your PowerUp Rewards card. Some will report success, but this requires a manual override and is very YMMV.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

If I buy a used copy of a game that requires an online pass for multiplayer, will it come with an online pass?
If you purchase a used title published by either Sony or WB you get an online pass from GS on your receipt. That's also why the used copies are $55 instead of $48 when the MSRP is $60. No GS issued passes of games published by EA, THQ, etc. On those titles you're totally dependent on the previous owner not using the code.

What states charge sales tax on purchases paid in full with credit and which ones don't?

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards. Some kind of programming that gets input from their system that wont show up when only inputting the number off the back of the card.

Quick question, so if I trade in 7 games (each of trade-in value of $3.00 or above), I get $35 in credit on top of the trade in value of the games? Just want to sort this out before I go by the store, thanks

Yeah. You get the base for the games, the $35 additional on top, and the PUR Pro bonus if you are a member. Obviously these are all in store credit, not cash, but that's how it works.

So assuming each game trades in at exactly $3 you would get $21 base for the games and an additional $35 in store credit on top of that, so a total of $56 in store credit.

Over the last week I have traded in 63 games leaving me with 977.55 in store credit. Now if they would just have a 50% trade in deal so I can get rid of some of the 180 games that were under $3 lol

Most folks are not waiting and just renewing their PUR Pro account to get the 50% trade-in coupon.

I'm amazed so many people are able to take advantage of the 7 for $35 deal. Everything I want to get rid of is under $3. My only trade in the last few weeks was using the 30% preorder deal since the games were worth about $20.
 
I took advantage of both then realized that I won't be able to pick up said preorders from the gamestop I pre-ordered at because I won't be in state when they come out.

Gonna have to find a way to cancel them lightly.
Any ideas?
Maybe swap them to games that are about to come out and not pick them up and cancel them then?

I trimmed the backlog. Didn't ever think I was going to get around to them due to PS4 coming out relatively soon.
 
yeah i got rid of some games that i got free from ps+ or that i bought digital and hadnt flipped cuz so low. i should have held on to a few more but i flipped them through amazon for 8ish. but vanquish is ps+ and that's 3, darksiders is + and that's 5, ratchet ffa i have free on vita now (plus deadlocked free) and i got that for 11 and they give 6. hotd overkill i bought for $5 on psn and that's 4 tiv. not really making much money, but recovering losses. lol so crazy sr3 is so high still tho.
aliens cm i paid 10 and they will give me that back. i keep trying to plat, but these challenges are insanely time grindy, especially the mp challenges which i presume i would need a boosting partner and i dont have time for that.

honestly thanks to this site between the 9 on saturday and the 14 i am about to take. there were 8 or so duplicates(this is probably the 6th time ive traded in assassins creed revelations lol thanks to best buy). 14 total that were unopened and the rest ranged from opened but not played to beaten and wont touch again.

doing this actually helps me keep the hoarder in me in check.

honestly it was mostly crap i bought to "collect" and will never ever touch and have no interesting in touching. im not sure im making money but at least i am kind of breaking even.

however if it gets under 3 dollars no matter the promo this or the 50% its a keeper. not worth it trading.

i could probably find more but some of that more i do actually want to play.

I'm in the same boat. Can't find five let alone seven that I want to get rid of that are worth over $3.

See, I have plenty of that to be sure. But I'd have a hard time taking a loss on any of those - or even breaking even, really (though with the ability to buy Kindle cards that kind of changes things, especially if the original purchases were from Amazon ;)).

I'll have to comb through everything yet again. Another problem is that whenever I check something the latest quote is usually a few to several months old and I don't want to call them about a bunch of prices.

But right now I'm staring at a used copy of Dead Space 2 for PS3 that I got form a long-ago Blockbuster B1G1 sale. I will never play that. I got it for my son but afterwards he became a 360 fanboy and won't touch the PS3. So that can go. But I need 6 more to make it worthwhile!

Another one is Killzone 3 - but, see, that one is only $2.50...

Then there's the older stuff. Skate 3 I have sitting here sealed and will never play. But the quote is from December.

Exactly TWO YEARS out of date. Really, no CAG has traded this game in 2 years?

The thing is I'd probably be better off just selling them (especially if they are still sealed).
 
well the thing is most of this wont increase in value with some exceptions. i do have copies of phantasy star on the gamecube for instance and i did sell a sealed xenoblade on ebay. and various other titles arent likely to drop in value. but the vast majority is only going down from now. i dont want to take a loss but eh i figure i might as well get something out of it and at the very least i am recycling the same X number of dollars for my next game.

on another note i found another 7.

and yea i noticed some of the titles i was going to axe i see 2 year out of date for 4 dollars or less. that ill keep just because i doubt it went up. in fact i have a game called morphx that isnt even on the xbox 360 list so i feel your pain lol. i also have several others with recent updates in the 1 dollar or less range that i would LOVE to pawn off.

selling them you are right. but i am being lazy.

i am hesitant to get kindle cards because then ill just re-add to my collection at least with gamestop ill avoid the place or it requires more effort to go there where as amazon is just a click away lol. i can probably at least lie to myself and tell myself i am saving for a ps4. thats my logic in the not getting kindle cards. and half of the reason i am doing this is to just get rid of crap. some stuff i do want to play that i am trading but quite frankly ill never get to it or there is another 100 hour game i can play instead.

my only beef is it takes a while to comb through stuff. ive probably spent the past 1-2 hours doing this lol and checking the database and hoping its accurate.

honestly my 360 collect after this probably still comes in at 200-300 games.

OK, I just started going through my PS3 stacks and I think I can probably scrounge up 7. I had stuff I didn't even realize like Vanquish that Velo mentioned. I remember buying that at release from Kmart (because of their awesome coupon deals at the time) and then selling it right after beating it. But apparently I rebought it again some time and since it is on PS+ (not to mention that I will probably never play it again anyway) there's no need to keep the disc.

I was, and continue to be, a big collector. But these games are taking up a lot of space. I have tons of GC and PS2 games that I can't do anything with now so I might as well clear out some of these "lesser" current-gen games while I have the chance. (Not that Vanquish wasn't a good game but it isn't destined to be a classic that I need to hold on to).

And yeah, it takes a while to go through everything and I'll have to take in several extras in case some aren't worth $3, but then looking through everything is good every so often. I've already pulled out 3 or 4 other games that I am going to try to sell. And that's always good.

You won't lose the value at all if I'm not mistaken.
The part I'm worried about is just dumping like 3 pre order cancels on one guy. Wasn't my original intention.

I have tons of GC and PS2 games that I can't do anything with now so I might as well clear out some of these "lesser" current-gen games while I have the chance. (Not that Vanquish wasn't a good game but it isn't destined to be a classic that I need to hold on to).

yea i am a collector but this stuff does take up space and where i am living now(a studio apartment space is precious) honestly i may try and round up another lot of 7 or two lots of 7. maybe. felt good to clear it out(it keeps me being a collector and keeps the game/dvd hoarder in me at bay which is the point of why i did this....honestly if gamestop still took movies and if it was part of this promo i would of had a field day). of course i now have hundreds in gamestop credit and a backlog with grandchildren still so theres that lol. but yea like you i also figured eh ill get rid of the lesser current gen stuff while it still has value. if i want something again ill pick up during a clearance or black friday.

my older stuff is still at my parents house. i'd imagine once im done with school and hopefully save far more than i spend so i can have a house ill just dedicate a room with all this stuff.

going through this stuff i am ashamed at some of the games i bought for 60 dollars and never touched. castlevania on the 360 was one of them. i dont know why i do that.

If you ask me io, you can always find filler's at some other stores if you don't want to quite get rid of games for less than you think they are worth. I mean it was better last week with the b2g1 at BB, but theres still a ton of game's you can break even or come out ahead a tiny bit, just so you get the most credit from your other games.
 
^ Was not even aware of that sale. But in general, it is better for me scrounge stuff up than go out and buy things. The latter requires too much time and effort for the reward.

Renew your PUR Pro (or get a new PUR Pro membership) and you will get a B2G1 and 50% coupon which is good for anything traded in, including consoles.

GS no longer buys it from EA and there's still huge demand so they price used copies at $40. Same issue with NFS MW 2005, KoA:R, LFD 1, & LFD 2.
