Gears of War 3 - Release Date Sept. 20
Does anyone know what it is when i info thing pops up during gameplay and it shows a star and says something like 150 kills, or drone kills, or something like that. Its not the ones that show you moving ahead of someone on your friends list. Just a big star and the info like 150 kills.
I think that means you're now ahead of everyone on your friends list.
i'm pretty good at killing npcs but i really suck bad online :(

had 12 year old kids on the mic talking shit about how bad i play hehe. half of the online so far has been ohh let srun around with teh shot gun and 1 shot people. i sort of like meleeing but i guess thats not how ya play in verses hehe =p
See this is the attitude to have, not like other people who cry because they choose to play a particular way that isn't successful.

How delicious. Just joined in a co-op campaign session for the final boss fight, chainsawed the first thing I could find and the battle was over. Better still it counted toward 4 player and insane so now I just have to rush through the previous chapter! ;D [/KNO'N U JELLY]

Damn just had 55 or so kills in beast mode with wretches, without even replaying any of the 12 rounds. I was beasting. Only need 25 more for instagib mutator.

I found a pretty nice way to get hail mary ribbons. Start a 35 man private TDM match on mercy. Change all the weapons to boomshots. Then at the start run straight where the pistol is supposed to be, and shoot from there diagonally across the map to where the enemies spawn/corner or the front of the church. Its long enough and a pretty easy shot to make. Only problem is it seems like it takes forever for the gun to respawn, i have it set to respawn when picked up, i thought that would be faster than after use. But it seems to take up to 2 minutes for a respawn of the gun.
Panda: They were offline last weekend. I haven't bothered to check the status of them now. I heard they addressed the problem some time yesterday but a large majority of the games I played were still P2P.

7th: I hear you. I very RARELY execute in this game and only under specific circumstances where there is no way in hell some jackass will steal it or I'll die for it. The revive system is even worse assuming you have the reflexes of the Flash in the first place due to the high damage output of all loadout weapons. Seems like the game prioritizes weapons pick ups over everything else. I'm never going to get my God Complex title at this rate. There's very little incentive in being a team player when normal mechanics hinder you like that.

LOL. There's a new Amazyn vid on how to Lancer for the non-stop Sawed-off hate:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVqSlzmk-uc

Thumbs up since that gun is a downing beast in this game. I now prefer it over the Hammerburst just to piss people off and guarantee I get more of my downs from huge distances before others can steal them. I need to work on getting my Retro back up to par. I've been practicing proper bursting in campaign but all to often whenever I pick one up I immediately wish I had a Lancer or Hammerburst instead.
Holy crap, if I could aim with mouse-like precision like that guy....

I think that video proves why the Lancer will be the first major nerf in this game - especially since Epic has proven time and time again they are in love with shotgun overpower.

-The lancer is WAY too accurate at long range
-The lancer does a bit too much damage - it should primarily be a stopping weapon not a baby mulcher.
- If it's damage or range is not reduced, it's clip size needs to be.
- There should not be one rifle THAT much better than the others.

People complain about the Retro Lancer for its power, the Gnasher for its solid range and decent one shot ability, the Sawed Off for its great one shot ability and now apparently the Lancer is too accurate and does too much damage?

What does everyone want to be using pea-shooters and pillows?

I haven't really seen anyone complain about the Retro being too powerful; the only people I see using it are usually bayonette spammers. Most people I talk to hate using it.

The sawed off is way too situational to be too overpowered; it's no gansher replacement. The only thing it can do that the gnasher can't is kill multiple enemies standing on top of each other, which isn't often enough to carry it over the gnasher.

The Gnasher, and Lancer, however - are easily the best combo in the game; there is little reason to use anything else except out of boredom. It's a shame they have to have two guns so far and away better than the others, is all.

You will rarely see any competitive player use anything other than Lancer/Gnasher combo. Ask ink.
That's four of us. Let's add each other and we're all OK banging out the Campaign this weekend, right?
I'm ready for the weekend. Sit down with a fat pot of coffee and bust out 4 player co-op campaign on insane. :D

I agree, but I have seen people complain about all of the guns I listed in some shape or form.

"The Sawed Off is too strong and promotes camping, etc."

"The Gnasher kills people too easily and has too much ammo, etc."

"The Retro Lancer is too powerful and anyone who can control the recoil murders everyone/the bayonette is spammed, etc."

"The Lancer is too accurate and powerful, etc."

Not saying the Lancer + Gnasher isn't easily the best combination, because it is. But man people complain about everything just because they aren't good enough to counter it consistantly?

I just watched that video Ink posted, that's pretty crazy how well he can utilize the Lancer but that's not something that would need a "nerf". He plays well and most if not all the people he killed and/or downed were trying to rush him with a shotgun which is stupid.

He mentioned that the HB is good but you can't finish your kills because of having to reload a lot and that's what I ran into, which is why I use the lancer now too. I never really hip fire the Lancer but it's definitely something to try now.

You guys had me needlessly shaking in my boots over the end battle ever since Act 2. Much to my surprise though, I finished it on my first try (hardcore arcade, solo). I don't know if it was my awesome raw skill (doubtful) or if it was just a fluke but it wasn't NEARLY as hard as you guys made it out to be.

Been enjoying the MP portion of the game a lot. Horde/Beast mode more than Versus. There's still a lot of shotgun whores, and it's frustrating, but I've been able to hold my own decently well. Downing a guy charging with a shotgun makes me chuckle. Haven't won a single chainsaw duel though. I feel like I'm hammering the B button at the speed of sound, but the other guy always wins.

There's no way in hell I'll play long enough to get Seriously 3.0. Good God, some of those medals would take forever. What the eff is the point of the "manipulate x number if objects in campaign" medal?

I think I had my first dc today. I mainly play KOTH/CTL on Quick since there aren't people sending invites for Ranked (if anyone needs an extra member for a party I'm willing to stick around if it's night time) oh and my connection is 1/2 bar (measured by the xbox wireless scan) ;)

It does seem that there aren't as many decent players when compared to Gears 2 social. I usually run retro/so but occasionally switch in lancer. I'll go gnasher if I can't do much within a few deaths.

The lancer does seem a bit overpowered. I usually lose in a semi-close range firefight if I have an active retro even if I started shooting first; close near-melee range hip fire typically works. Mid range I usually win but have been downed a lot early, maybe they were getting headshots. The only thing I haven't done much is get long range downs (has happened to me a lot); I tried two quick taps but smart players go into cover so I'll just have to hope it's someone not paying attention.

The snub seems kinda weak compared to Gears 2. Boltok is likely stronger though active shots appear to fire slower. Not sure about the Gorgon since I only used it a few times to finish a down and not get one.

Frags seem a bit stronger or maybe detonate earlier. A guy was slightly in front of me to my right and tossed a frag. I roll left and hear the beep mid roll and boom I die... Same with tags. I walk up to a wall likely to have a nade and roll back but have been blown up a few times!

In regards to power weapons, I find the longshot much easier to use even with the expanding reticule (got 5 headshots in a row on Sandbar only 2 were stationaryish :applause:). I miss a lot with torque. Maybe since there isn't much of an elevation difference when I'm using it (Drydock has several levels but haven't done well with torque on it either). Boom seems the same. Mulcher a bit better but worse blindfiring. Hammer seems to take longer to charge or the charge gets disrupted easily. I haven't used scorcher much but it seems to down slower.

well that's my observations. I do hope the servers are fixed or at least the matchmaking system is. Last weak was fine but this week it's been taking a bit longer to connect (maybe a minute tops) and have run into a bunch of UK players frequently.

I need all horde achievements atm. If anyone is thinking of doing Insane horde let me know (preferably Thurs/Fri night). I plan on doing 4 player insane arcade over the weekend with friends.

Found a way to do Insane Horde mode by myself. I'm going to try and do it once I get Infinite Ammo. I tried doing Waves 1-5 and it worked pretty well I must say.

Uh yeah... it's hard to argue against the effectiveness of a Gnasher/Lancer loadout. I'd even go so far as to say it sets the standard for the all-around competitive player who is already familiar with every weapon. You can handle anyone at any range without ever taxing yourself trying to compensate for gaping flaws as you would with the Retro and Sawed-off. The only thing stopping the Lancer from ruling over the Hammerburst is raw shot damage and fire rate. I wish they'd consider giving the Burst it's active damage boost back (halved if necessary) because I have very little reason to use it. In the time it would take to ensure I finished off a down by reloading or switching to a pistol I could have (and have) killed two people with one clip of the Lancer. On maps like Overpass, Drydock and Sandbar high ground + Lancer fire = guaranteed spawn trap -> guaranteed map control -> guaranteed win with very little effort, risk, or commitment required besides securing the area.

If I had to suggest any Lancer nerf it would be a decreased clip/increased spread for long distances combo and maybe even halve the headshot multiplier while they are at it. Because right now it's strolling into Hammerburst territory and embarrassing the utter hell out of it. If it remains untouched I won't shed a tear over it because I've never been a one playstyle kind of guy. The only two things I care about in this game more than a non-laggy fair authentic Gears of War experience is going positive and winning. If I can't do either then I'm probably not having fun.

Krak: Agreed. If people spent as much time figuring out how to combat against what they hate we would all benefit from it.

I feel kinda bad using the old school layout because EPIC has tried to make other weapons just as good and they are but still you can't beat the lancer/shotgun combo even if every cunt is using a S/O
I feel kinda bad using the old school layout because EPIC has tried to make other weapons just as good and they are but still you can't beat the lancer/shotgun combo even if every cunt is using a S/O
I honestly don't feel bad at all. My hands are tied if people want to corner camp or rush with Sawed-offs in my games. I happily pre-active Lancer/Gnasher zone because I'm not about to tolerate that bullshit. If it gets out of hand then I break the Retro out of retirement and start wall bouncing with my Sawed-off to show them how annoying they COULD be if they'd step their game up instead of scrubbing it.

King of the Hill games against 3 or more players with Sawed-offs is a totally different story. More like a lost cause if you're playing with randoms because only actual teamwork could combat that shit. Better to keep your distance and eat the loss.

My only (minor) issue with the loadout is it's too effective in the hands of a decent player. You have virtually no incentive to change it. Kind of sucks when you think about it, but nothing seriously broken going on there.

Yeah I only use S/O if I get killed by it and then switch back to gnasher when I die -- haven't tried anything other than TDM so I don't know what the ratio of S/O users are but on TDM its usually that one guy who sits behind a wall and waits

Share your secrets! Also if you are trying to do it let me join because i want onyx and theron guard. :)

For Mutators i have...

INSTAGIB MELEE
SUPER RELOAD
INFINITE AMMO
BIG EXPLOSIONS
FRIENDLY FIRE
FLOWER BLOOD
HEADLESS CHICKEN
LAUGH TRACK

It sucks that infinite ammo only works on starting guns. I was hoping i could pick up a boomshot, or have the ability to throw frag after frag. So really it doesnt help much. The super reload seems like its a better deal.

Right now im having problems deciding on what i want to do next. I already beat beast, horde, campaign. I guess i could do some MP but i dont really feel like going in yet. Tomorrow i might grind out my number 1 achievement i need.

Am I one of the few that doesn't use a shot gun? I mean I'm being honest here. I use my Rainbow lancer for everything. I think I used my gnasher and or sawed off twice in two games games and I don't even Remember the reason. I'm all about the Lancet with an active reload.

Fine, but you tell me how you got Big Explosions. I can't figure out how to get that one.

I might be wrong about this, but I think it has to be done Solo. It'd work a lot better for me if I had the Sentry Unlocked, but I don't :\

Map: Trenches
Difficulty: Insane
Mutators: Super Reload, Infinite Ammo
Weapons:
- Lancer and Gnasher (Lancer is more accurate than Retro, more shots with Gnasher)

Impossibilities:
- Lambent Beserker
- Savage Kantus (if you don't have Explosives)

How does it work?
- Go to the Top portion of the Map and set up camp
- Facing outwards, get into cover in the far left-hand side next to the ramp (Really hug that ramp)

What's it do?
- Basically, it will stop most enemies from coming at you. If you are wondering where enemies are, go a little bit to the right and then go back. This will bring some enemies out, but be careful about it. Wires and Sentries are preferred here as well since they will prevent death. I imagine the higher the Sentry level you have the better you'll do.

This is also an extremely good way to earn money in Horde, as I made about...70,000 in 11 waves across 2 sessions. Another good thing about Horde in Gears 3 is that if you die your Fortifications will stay as long as you keep going.

Also...do those mutators have to be unlocked or are they unlocked by default?

I'd say every 5 waves is taking me 30 minutes so far. I died twice on my last session, so I have that going for me at least. I really want to get some Sentries though, as it will definitely make my life easier.

It definitely works though. It's pretty sure-fire.

I don't use shotguns either. I have to equip one, obviously, so I choose the sawed-off and replace it with another weapon as soon as I can. Occasionally I'll use the shotgun if someone is trying to corner me or flank me aggressively.

Granted, I don't win as much as I could - because, you know, it is Shotguns of War after all; but I have more fun and that's what matters to me.

I rarely use a shotgun either; I generally try to replace it with a Boomshot or Hammerburst asap. Of course, I mostly play campaign and Horde so close-range game isn't as important.

Also, holy god, Insane is hard as shit. It's on a completely different planet than Hardcore.

Wait wait wait...shooting someone in the head with the lancer does more damage!? I didn't know Gears worked that way. please confirm because this just blew my mind

Mutators make Horde a lot more fun/bearable. I'm using Infinite/Super Ammo on Casual Horde to get Sentries and I'm blowing through it. I should've turned on Instagib Melee though.

You should invite me if you are running through insane horde if im online.

Anyway the way i got big explosions was in a private TDM 35 man, 15 rounds (just quit when you get enough) on the Mercy map. Change all weapons to boomshot, then when you spawn run straight to the lower left corner where the pistol usually spawns (if you are cog, you spawn on the left) Then just sit there shooting boomshots diaginally across the map because the ai usually sits by the corner of the church on their spawn, or the little bench in front of that. Sometimes you can get 3-4 when they all run out after spawning. It really makes it easy to get hail mary. If spawns flip just run to the other side where the pistol spawns and shoot the other corner. But make sure you have the weapons spawn after use. They spawn a LOT faster than after pickup, for whatever reason. It sounds like the opposite would be true.

Just a heads up: You CAN use this method with other people. Amazing.

I have every Fornication unlocked now, maxed out Spikes, got Decoys to 3 and Turrets almost to 7. I have this weird feeling that a 6th is locked away as DLC on the disc, just like a lot of characters for Beast Mode.

do mutators only affect the host or everyone? I'm also guessing only the host can choose them.

anyone have elmo (wgpfly on cag) on their fl? He has 0 gs for Gears 3, but I can see he has last played "The Darkness" and WWE Allstars so it isn't his privacy settings. I think this guy just wanted referrals .

I PM'd him last week about joining getting people to join the group. this was his reply:

If you can get people to join the group Im all down for it. I currently have alts in all 3 groups. Aside being the one in the main group.

LOL yeah infinite ammo took a while, maybe couple hours?. I just put the headphones on and listened to music while i was doing it so it wasnt so boring. I did it on checkout though, because i would spawn right by a turret every time. (actually found that by accidently not picking the thrashball map) If you do it on thrashball i had to walk each character 20-30 feet to get to the turret. It was also a good way to get onyx medal for doing fortifications, and building up turrets. I think my turret is up to 4 now.

Have you guys found that when you join a Horde match that's already in progress, you always spawn in as Marcus, no matter what character you have selected in your preferences? Or is it just me?

Here's what I have: (Level.XP %)
- Barrier: 7.2
- Decoy: 3.4
- Sentry: 1.2
- Turret: 6.6
- Silverback: 1.0

I don't think Infinite Ammo is all that great. Super Reload however is a Miracle.

EDIT: Whenever you spawn into a match in-progress, you always spawn as Marcus. I've never spawned into an on-going Horde match before.

Yeah, I just did a little bit of Google research and it sounds like the reason is that the game only caches the character skins that are in use at the start of a match. So if someone else is already playing as your preferred character and it's already cached on everyone's console, you can use it right away, but if not, you default to Marcus for the remainder of that match.

Not too big of a deal in Versus when you'll probably roll over into a new match within a few minutes, but in Horde you might be playing for three hours. Too bad they don't reload the character skins after every boss wave or something.

Yeah. The Lancer has always had a damage multiplier for headshots. Gears of War 2 was so f*cking laggy you'd never noticed because half of your clip wasn't registering into the target anyway.

Appreciate the Horde tips King. I'm going to try that technique out in a private later because I want the I'm Rich, BITCH! title.

Once I beat Campaign on Insane Arcade, I'll get at least 2 more Onyx Medals, maybe even 3 or 4 depending on how much I score/get 1st Place. I imagine Super Reload and Infinite Ammo will make the final boss a lot easier.

Same holds true for any MP game that you enter into that's already in progress. You turn into your selected character at the start of the next full game, not round.

Yeah im not so sure big explosions is worth using on horde. I dont think it does much good, and might even help boomers kill you! Does anyone know if you have to do all insane in one sitting, or is there checkpoints at every 10? Im on 6 right now but feel like restarting without big explosions.

Anybody wanna crank out some 4 player arcade on Insane? I've got probably 10 or 12 random chapters done but I'd be willing to try and hammer through the whole thing in the next couple of days.

The game tracks progress you can start and stop when you want. Hell after I beat the game the first time I didn't even have to finish entire chapters for the co-op achievements to count. Simply played for a little bit then dropped out whenever hosts paused for too long and when I checked my progress the game acknowledged it.
