FAQ
These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and cut the trade-in value in half. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

What states charge sales tax on purchases made with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases:Arkansas, California, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania,
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases:Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Wisconsin, Virginia,

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards.

I got $123.59 in credit i was a pretty happy camper finding that out.

I bought monopoly at best buy for 15 bucks when it was on sale i was happy i got pretty much how much i paid it back for when i returned it :D

So I got my first official bad experience with Gamestop today. I went in to pick up my copy of Bad Company 2 and showed her my receipt. She looked at it and noticed it didn't get charged tax and said that I would have to pay the 4.20$ because I wasn't charged it. I proceeded to tell her that purchases made with Gamestop credit do not get charged tax at all, I've done it plenty of times over the past year. She keeps insisting it is a glitch and talking about "tax in so tax out" Basically that they pay tax on products, so they must charge tax back on them. I told her that it didn't really make any sense because I wasn't paying with cash and I traded in games for the credit I had. I then said, so why didn't I get paid the 7% tax on my trade-ins then? She didn't say anything and just continued on about it being a glitch.

I was on my 30 minute lunch break and was in a rush to do anything asshole like so I just gave her my Edge card and told her to take it off of that. I'm not pissed that I'm out $4.20, I'm just pissed that she was trying to make me feel stupid by pulling a calculator out and showing me that 59.99 x .07 was 4.20. None the less, I don't know if this is going to be effective across all of Indiana now or if she was just an asshole.

On the other hand, the pre-order bonus code was printed on the receipt instead of being given a paper card or anything. I'll check it out after I get out of class later today.

Yeah, she was wrong. I've never gotten charged tax if its solely a giftcard purchase.

Dude - go and get your money back! I had a similar experience last week with Endless Ocean that I pre-ordered and paid full for. Initially the screen came up with $2-3 tax owed and I was really suprised (even called over the manager to check it out) - but when they ran my Edge card to take the tax off of my credit, the tax went away and I owed $0.00.

Bottom line - if you don't want to worry about it in the future, don't pay for the pre-order in full. All credit purchases are still tax free.

This is for Indiana residents only - BTW.
Did anyone have luck trading in Left 4 Dead 2 today? Is the value of 29.75 still holding up?
my friend traded it in earlier today (after buying it with the TRU glitch) it is indeed the same value
Must be nice, I pay 10% tax on all purchases, credit or not.
Yeah. Los Angeles County is just under that, and Orange County, CA is almost 9% now.

I traded in a bunch today, and ended up with $130 credit that I'm going to use towards a Wii.

I noticed this as well....the manager at my local gamestop adjusts it accordingly. It seems like the system they have from time to time runs into this problem. When this has happened to me in the past and INCLUDING today when I went to pick up my Bad Company 2 he manually adjusted it.

I had over 200$ in credit on my Edge card so I just gave it to her to do it. The weird thing is, my receipt says RETURNED MERCHANDISE on it. I guess I should have told her to return the credit on my edge card FIRST, then re-ring it up. Regardless, it doesn't bother me. Next time they try to pull that shit though, I will just walk out and go to another one down the street.

i can't imagine getting all butt hurt about being charged tax, or the fact you blame it on the cashier who just scans the damn game or rings it up.

I suppose it's because of her explanation.

Just traded these in today (3/2/10)

PSP:
Rock Band Unplugged (disc w/ PSP-3000 bundle sleeve only, don't know if this affected the value): $5.50

360:
Halo 3 (no artwork, don't know if this affected the TIV): $5.00

360 Star Ocean The Last Hope 13.75 (22.01 after bonus+edge)

Glad it held, I'm going to buy the ps3 version. I know the differences are small, but I never started it on 360 anyway and I only paid about 18 for it from amazon.

Someone else traded PS3 Tekken for $18 base today and that was listed as the 360 price too in the OP but I just got back from trading 360 Tekken 6 in at Gamestop and got $16 Base TIV. Just a heads-up, I was still happy.

Just a quick update, with the only difference in price from the master list out of my trade-ins...

PSP
Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles - $4.00 (Base TIV)

Ok the deals mentioned above and their description says offers cannot
be stacked. Does that mean i cant stack the 50% trade in credit
with the 25% bonus for preordering the listed games? Seems kinda
odd since the 50% deal kinda contradicts the 25% one, either way
your getting 50% off your games worth why even bother with the 25%
at all? (they both end at 3/14 as well.... somebody clarify this for me please

no promos dont stack. the reason the 25% is even there is because those promotions have been going on for a few months, and are active until the game is released.

Exactly. Also, as someone else pointed out, this is one of the rare times that the general trade-in promo has no special stipulations. Usually, it's something tiered or the games need to be a minimum value. Thus, you would have the two offers run side-by-side.

Updated lists and database.

Probably already mentioned but if not their system has removed Star Wars the Clone Wars: Republic Heroes (Xbox 360) from the list of $40 off FFXIII (getting the PS3 version). The guy at the GS i went to was nice enough to still take $20 off for Rockband 2 (Xbox 360) because the notice came out today 3/2/2010 so i only ended up paying $34.02 with giftcard and will be hitting them up on release night.

I acted up @ my gamestop when the clerk was in the middle of the transaction and the mgr descends down and states that they JUST got an email that they couldn't take Star Wars Clone Wars 360 in the $19.99 promo. (It still had the 9.99 BBV stickers on...) Largely due to the fact that I had already pre-paid for FFXIII, they backed it out and gave me the credit along with the 360 ACII I parted with. So I have $50 bucks toward Red Dead FTW.

It's not that I'm getting butthurt over getting charged tax, like I said I had over 200$ in credit so 4.20$ was nothing. It was just the principle of the matter, I've NEVER been charged tax when using Edge credit and this time the lady went out of her way to make SURE I was charged tax. It's supposed to not get charged tax period. This time it was only 4 dollars, but what about if I decide to buy 200~300$ worth of stuff? That's 14~21 dollars right there and if all I have to do is go to a different Gamestop to get them to follow their own rules, then I surely will. For now though, it will slide since I already opened the game anyways.

I just traded in both versions of Star Wars a couple hours ago towards God of War 3. I should be okay on the release day, right? Hope they won't give me any trouble.

There is no way they will say anthing after the fact. I am going to try to deal this tomorrow because I am waiting on my amazon shipment for the Star Wars 360 ones to pair up with my Wii Versions from blockbuster. If not then I'll just send them back to amazon and just lose the shipping. Not a big loss and definitely worth the try.

Thanks to the info in this thread, i went ahead and traded in L4D2 (44.63 after 50% promo ) and picked up Lunar silver star on psp.

ok, but you're using your previous experiences to dictate your future ones, which makes sense, but if their system never charged you sales tax on a purchase that warrants it, doesn't make you exempt from those same taxes.

see my point?

well i will concur, gamestop doesn't charge taxes on purchases paid in full with credit. i know when i bought NSMB wii brand new i thought i would pay tax, but didn't. what the problem here is that it seems like the associate changed his purchase in order to make him pay more for tax.

What state are you in? Indiana does not charge tax on items paid in full with credit. I know the stores around here have ran into that issue and have always told me to leave $5 left to pay on my pre-orders and I've never run into the issue since. It didn't happen all the time but did happen.

This has been discussed a lot and is mentioned in the OP. It all varies by state. Not every state's sales tax laws are exactly the same.

I tried to trade in my 360 today and they wouldn't take it. The manager said the seal was broken. I never modded it or broke the seal. It was a refurbed box from Microsoft so I guess they broke the seal.

Is that normal?

When Microsoft refurbishes the system, they apply a new warranty seal sticker.

Traded in some stuff...
Base values as of today----
iconxbox360.gif

Prince of Persia: 3.00
iconps3.gif

Quantum of Solace: 4.75
Motorstorm: 3.25
Batman: 15
iconwii.gif

Super Smash Bros Brawl: 15
Mario Kart: 12

Rhythm Heaven: 13.25

Gotta hate them drops

Heavy Rain is still holding it's $25 base value as of today, if anyone is wondering.

Personally, I'm glad to be rid of it.

I went to Davenport (the city has 4 gamestops) today and all of the stores wouldn't take Star Wars for the preorder of GoWIII. Luckily, there's a Video Games Etc in the area that offered 15 for the game, and I traded in both copies. They also had a L4D2 used for 35 bucks, so I then flipped it to GS and got 47 for it. I pretty much lucked out on this one.

yeah, it was all over that TRU thread...it's $25. The consensus is to wait a few days if you want to trade it. It could go to $30 or very slightly possibly $35, base. At the very least, it won't go below $25 for a week or so, at the minimum. There will be a pretty high demand for this game.
