FAQ
These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and cut the trade-in value in half. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

What states charge sales tax on purchases made with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases:Arkansas, California, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania,
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases:Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Wisconsin, Virginia,

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards.

First post contains promo information and the FAQ. Second post has the 360/Wii/PS3 values. Third post has the PS2/GC values. Fourth post has PSP/DS values.

That would require them to actually update the values or to re-copy every day. There a couple sites that just copy the values every 2-4 days. I got bored one day during a slow promo and google searched. CAG always comes up first but there are a couple others.
Best buy has l4d2 for $39.99. If I trade in my copy to gs, I would get 47.60 after promo and edge. I can make $5.21 after taxes. Is it worth the drive? :bouncy:
I saw that also. I Was hoping to find a 10% off coupon.

hm. im contemplating just trading in mario strikers charged and super sluggers to gamestop with this promo. if the TIVs hold for another day, i would get a total of $40 for the 2 of them...and i only spent $26.

although i still never even opened super sluggers, it's just been sitting here for about a year.

Base TIV as of 2/22/10:

Kameo Elements of Power = $1.50
Lost Odyssey = $8.00
Project Gotham Racing 4 = $3.00
Forza Motorsport 2 = $2.00
Too Human = $1.50
360 wireless controller = $11.50

Keep in mind this is store credit and not the real moneycash. Of course, games like Mass Effect 2, Bioshock 2, and said game were probably traded in numerous times at numerous stores. If you're willing to wait, I bet Left 4 Dead 2 would probably drop $5-$10 due to overstock plus the imminent Buy 2 get 1 Free would make it even better. Of course I'm making the best possible prediction that may happen.

Base Values for trade-ins today at ~6:00pm, 2/22/10, at the Richards St store in Milwaukee, WI:

:ps3: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - $12.00
:ps3: WWE Smackdown vs. RAW 2010 - $22.50
:wii: New Super Mario Bros. Wii - $25.00
:wii: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2010 - $18.25
:ds: Cooking Mama - $8.00

The values listed for the first 2 games are off on the OP.

$137.19 after +50% and Edge. The clerk (nice African-American guy) was hyping Heavy Rain pretty heavily. Apparently they only had 3 copies for people who didn't reserve, so he was pushing it on people in the store who didn't pre-order already.

He was also nice enough to renew my EDGE and let me get the +10% without having to pay for $14.99 first. This allowed me to save on tax.

I was thinking about buying like 10 copies from bestbuy and trading them all in at different gamestops (I live near 5) but realize it's too much work and probably wouldn't work. :booty:
Whats the point of the power trades, if the 50% deal is 2x better?
it's not always better.

RB2 being a prime example. It's not gonna get you $20 with the 50% deal.
To vote you have to be registered, and I'd just feel dirty doing that.
I feel dirty even looking at the same site as those aholes.

(which is why I always get too heated when people on CAG start talking about how to return fraud at Walmart. We should be better than that.... or at least I can hope.)

"IF" i decided to trade stuff in and these prices are ACCURATE then Id get $350 in credit. Give or take a few bucks. Its hard to say NO to a promo like this.

Also for me I DONT like to get rid of games. This is a HARD Decision.

On Ps3 Id Still have Bioshock 1 & 2, GOW Collection, LBP, Metal Gear, and GTA 4. And I have HEAVY Rain Paid off, GOW3 UE paid off, and Red Dead is Paid Off.

Choice is easy if your games are just sitting on the shelf collecting dust. If you beat the game and have no intention of playing it again, sell it now as 50% boost does not come around too often.

Personally I am getting rid of games that are really bad, like Dark Sector, and games that I wont play again, R&C ToD and R&C aCiT, UT3, etc.

Do it! 350 dollars is ALOT! You're look at like 6-7 games new upcoming games, or you can get a bunch of other stuff. With b2g1 free on the horizon, save that credit and get a bunch of stuff!

Okay, got the first batch of games in the lists and database. Got a second batch of titles I'm gettign ready to put in the lists and then in the database. You are some crazy bastards lol. Think you get caught up and boom. More stuff. Definitely glad I created that new thread Saturday though.

This is my marker for next batch of games.
Also for me I DONT like to get rid of games. This is a HARD Decision.
I look at it this way. If it's a game you want to keep in your collection and it won't likely become rare/collectible, but has a high trade-in value, trade it in.

I did that with New Super Mario Bros. Wii. $25 base and $40 after bonuses. That's a real steal of a trade-in. Eventually, down the road, you'll be able to snag it for $25ish. Definitely worth it in my opinion.

They are going to find me, curled up in a ball next to my laptop, just babbling, "So many games, not enough time. So many numbers.";)

Just kidding around, I appreciate everyone contributing numbers and the people answering questions. I really like to help out with answering questions but glad people are answering them before I can get to them. Thanks everyone!

Odd question but for the flip 2 games to get $40 off on FFXIII/GOW3 can you trade in the same game twice?

Just wondering because Lego Star Wars is on the list for the PS3 and it's selling for $18 new. Imagine you might be able to find it cheaper other places, but otherwise not worth it. Not sure if this is the lowest priced game on the list but I'm guessing it is.

Just traded these:

New Super Mario Bros. DS $15 ($24 w/bonus and edge)
Left 4 Dead 2 $29.75 ($47.61 w/bonus and edge)
Bayonetta 360 $23 ($36.80 w/bonus and edge)
Tekken 6 PS3 $22.75 ($36.41 w/bonus and edge)

YMMV but gamestop's policy is to not take 2 of the same title/platform in a trade.
Loving this promo. Took in Borderlands, L4D 2 and NHL 08 (360, 360 and PS3 respectively). Walked out with a new copy of MAG and a 20 dollar gift card. Total credit came to $85.76, IIRC.
Congrats on your $85. I was thinking about trading in borderlands since I am not feeling it too much. Then again, I might be able to make around 35-40 on ebay. :whistle2:k

yeah I wasn't too big on borderlands either so I traded it in, came out to be $38 in credit. I also traded in Left 4 Dead 2, Zelda Spirit Tracks, and Kirby Superstar Ultra and came away with $140 in credit. Considering I only paid $70 for all of those I'm rather pleased.

I really hope some of them try buying ME2 (multiple copies) and try trading it in for some extra CASH. Lol I'd love to see the person that buys a few copies opens them for trading and then gets the 'we only take one copy and promo's don't apply on cash trades' seeing that would be priceless.

Traded a bunch of old games today (Base TIV):

Lego Batman/Pure 9.21 (5.75)
Lego Star Wars 7.61 (4.75) -PS2
Kingdom Hearts 6.79 (4.25)
Tomb Raider Anniversary 4.80 (3.00)-PS2
Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 1.21 (1.00)
Resident Evil Zero 4.80 (3.00)
Killer 7 2.40 (1.50) - GC
Tomb Raider Legend 1.99 (1.25) - GC

Overall 38.81 today.

Still have some other stuff to pawn off.

Trade ins after edge and promo:

360
Bioshock 2 : Base: $25/PromoEdge/$40
Dragon Age:Bas: $21.25/PromoEdge/ $33.99

DS:
Kirby SSU:Base: $15/PromoEdge $24
Pokemon Platinum: Base: $15/PromoEdge/ $24

Total: $121.99
Extremely happy with how it went.

My manager told me they are keeping an eye for employees doing this as with discount and edge a used copy would be 45 dollars and some change. If you work there, I urge you do not take advantage of this. For the sake of your job and its just crappy to rip off GS when they are doing a promo like this.

Thanks OP and everyone else posting base values. Between this and that trade in certain game-get another for $20 promo, the most gamestop trade ins I've had in years. BUT... some of those base trade in values...fuck...if I had coffee in my mouth, it would have been spit take'd.

Thanks, I hope mine will. Most of the employees are good, but there's one asshole who always follows every regulation down to the last comma. Such as the apparent, "Add refurb to everything" rule that none of the others follow.

I'll be trading within the next couple days, so I'll give some values then.

traded in three ps2 games taking up shelf space:
Disgaea 2 @ 5.50 with 2.75 bonus
Disgaea 1 @ 4.75 with 2.38 bonus
Star Ocean till the end of time @ 3.00 with 1.50 bonus

Can someone explain what everyone is doing with ME2? Are you buying and then trading in? And if so what is you profit? Just confused on this.
Darksiders seems to have gone up to $24 for both platforms, I'm just praying I can finish it before it drops.
Amen on that. I paid 31.50 last week for it, if I can beat it sometime this week, I'll get back 38.40 after edge. Sweet deal.

I can't believe l4d2 is 29.75 and bioshock 2 is 25. Who the heck is in charge of gs tiv's? Bioshock 2 been out for 2 weeks and l4d2 been out for 3 months with it on sale at various retailers.

I used to never get rid of games, too.

But I just got tired of looking at a shelf full of games that I wasn't playing, or really had no desire of ever playing again.

So, out they went. Now I'm sitting on $375 in GS credit, and I'm going back tomorrow to trade in more.

I just had to get over my collector's mentality and realize that those games can do me much more good as credit, than collecting dust.

ha, funny, there's a best buy right in front of a game stop. 86th NY
man even with this deal gamestop is still worse than ebay
It's all in the eye of the beholder.

I'll easily take a little less from Gamestop as a "Convenience Tax", than messing with Ebay and Paypal fees, listing it, mailing it out, etc.

Give me instant gratification, keep the change, thanks. :)
