Instructions on finding games in the database and inputting the values from different sections can be found in my blog post here: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/blog.php?b=14143. I would put the entire post in the thread but this is already kind of a large post.

FAQ
These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Is there any way to look at what the previous values reported on a game?
You can search through this thread and previous ones to see what a game has been reported in the past. With the TIV Tracker you can sort by date and then go through the list of past updated values through that as well. Here are the previous GS TIV Threads: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

What are the refurb fees on games?
There appears to be set prices for set value ranges. We aren't 100% certain on the splits just yet. Here is what we have currently:
$0.25-$2 Value:
$0.75 Refurb Fee
$2.01-$4 Value: $1 Refurb Fee
$4.01-$7 Value: $2 Refurb Fee
$7.01-$10 Value: $3 Refurb Fee
$10.01 & Higher Value: $4 Refurb Fee
This information isn't guaranteed by any mean and we are still working on nailing it down.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and put a refurb fee on the console. The refurb fee on the console will vary on the price of the console so those numbers will change. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above. They will not, however, take RROD 360 consoles. There may be stores that still do it, but official policy is to not take them in.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

What states charge sales tax on purchases paid in full with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah,
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming
No Information Yet: Connecticut, Idaho, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, Rhode Island, South Dakota, West Virginia

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards. Some kind of programming that gets input from their system that wont show up when only inputting the number off the back of the card.

First post contains promo information and the FAQ. Second post has the 360/Wii/PS3 values. Third post has the PS2/GC values. Fourth post has DS/PSP/GBA values.

You wont get a better deal than that. Take the credit.

Yup. Sounds like a no-brainer to me.

I was wondering if I can do this for the

Save $25 on any new game $29.99 or higher when trading select titles.
deal.

I ordered Bayonetta for $20 used (still hasn't came in yet). Trade in value is $18. Can I trade it in TOWARDS a new Bayonetta with the deal? Online it says Bayonetta is $40.

Price I payed for used Bayonetta = $20

18 + 25 = $43

Bayonetta NEW = $40

Should I do that?

nope you can do whatever you want with the credit i was happy about that its a great time to trade in that old system for a new one
can I get the 40$ from the Wii Balance Board on a gift card or do I have to buy a game with it.
Have to buy a game.

Alright guys , just called my lame Gamestop. He said " It doesn't work that way " meaning I CAN'T trade in Beyonetta USED for a NEW Bayonetta and get the extra 25 bucks.

Is there any game up there for 40$ I can trade towards and then RETRADE it and get the 25 dollars towards a new Bayonetta?

Sigh , I'm angry.

Just purchase a new game, ask for a gift receipt, and then return it another day or at another store.

You don't have any reason to be angry. You simply don't understand the promo. You don't get an additional $25 added to the current TIV of a qualifying game. If you trade in a qualifying game towards the purchase of a new game $29.99 or more, then the TIV value of the game you're trading in gets bumped UP to $25. For example, Mario Kart Wii is one of the qualifying trade-in games. The TIV is currently $12. However, if I trade that game in towards the purchase of Killzone 2 ($29.99), then the TIV gets bumped up to $25. I then only have to throw in another $7 or so to purchase Killzone 2.

Also, I'm not sure what you're asking for as far as finding a game that you can trade towards and then retrade...
Do you have to use the credit towards a new console?
Ahhh , I thought it ADDED $25.

Scratch my plan then.

Anyways , my friend just traded his old Xbox360 in and put cash towards a new Xbox 360 elite. He did that 2 days ago ( during this GameDay Sale ) and didn't get a $50 Gift Card.

Did he do something wrong or was he not qualified for the gift card?

This promo only applies when you trade in a PS3, Wii or 360. Handhelds and old systems don't qualify.

The trade-in promo on hardware is for an extra $50 boost on the hardware, so to know if he got it or not we would need to know what value they gave him for his 360. If he got $80-90, then they didn't give him the promo, if he got $130-140 then he did get the promo. The $50 gift card promo for new 360 I thought was only a week long and online only.

Just edited it with Xbox360. Also I wasn't talking about the $50 BONUS on Hardware. I'm talking about the gameday sale ( the one where you guy a elite and get a $50 gift card ).

Alright thanks for the info dude.

Also , he traded in his Xbox360 that was broken. He got 80$ for it. I assume 30+$50 hardware PROMO.

So , if anyone has a broken system trade it in now. 80$ is worth it.

The bundle was a limited time offer only. I checked the GS website, and the 360 promotion isn't showing anymore. Your buddy really should have traded in his old 360 towards the Elite bundle earlier.

That is interesting. The defective is half off, so he should have gotten $40 or $45 base, depending upon whether he trade in one with a wireless or wired controller, then $50 on top.

If they gave a bonus on borked hardware, I hope they do it for me as well. Even if they gave me $100 for my "broken" PS3 80GB, I'll be happy as a clam. Though I paid $300 for it used only to have it die a month later. I learned my lesson that day.

Well he traded in a defective Xbox360 with Wireless controller AND FFXIII and got $107.

From your list FFXIII is $25

107-25 = 82.

With the +$50 it looks like he got $30 for his Xbox360.

Definitely wasn't questioning it, just more of trying to figure out what they did there. Some GameStops do things different than other stores because of a district manager or even a store manager.

There was some work on the permissions on the database and I think I was given Forum Guide status by accident somehow. It was gone a couple hours later so no big deal. I didn't even know there was such a thing or what it was until it was explained to me by a couple people.

Thanks for the compliment, not entirely sure if I deserve it though.

In other items, I have spoken with a GameStop employee and we might have an idea on how the refurbs are done. When any of you get a refurb fee, especially if it's just one on a transaction and know what game it was for, please post it here. I really want to try and tag the refurb fee scale if possible. Also I'm almost done writing up some instructions for different ways of adding a TIV to the games database. Trying to refine the wording because I'm not always the most well spoken person on the forums.

Actually we all hate him because he keeps this thread and the database up to date and posts Gamestop's weekly ads early. It would be so much better if no one maintained this thread instead and we had to wait for the Gamestop ads. ;)

I'll enter these in the database after I post this.

If the value you are inputting is the same as the one already in, it's counts it as a confirmation. If it is different than the one being input it gets input into a moderation queue until it gets approved or confirmed by another user.

Not a problem, it took me a minute to realize what you were asking. I remember when the TIV Tracker page was put in place Cheapy mentioned some details in the CAG Site sub-forum. Thread was somewhere in there.

Hey guys... anybody know how thorough they are with checking to see if the Xbox 360 works before accepting the trade-in?

I have a launch 360 (I KNOW!) that still works 90% of the time just fine. I've never gotten red lights or whatnot. However; every once in a while, it recognizes the game disc in the drive as a DVD movie. And sometimes opening it and closing fixes the problem, and other times you have to turn it off then back on.

So... lets say I go in and it recognizes the game they put in the system as a DVD movie... Will they stop me right there? Will they try another game? Will they turn it on/off? I know it WILL eventually work... I'm just curious how lax they are...

Might as well trade-up now. I doubt I'll ever see much of a better deal.

Also, real quick... it's $90 + $50 = $140 WITHOUT the HDD, correct? I'd want to save the HDD till I get the Elite in my room so I can transfer saves.

Thanks all!

Yes , WITHOUT the HDD. On your question...I guess you will just have to do with the $80. They MIGHT think something is wrong with the disk and try a new one. If so then you are in luck.

What ever you do, goodluck to you!.

Also , to GUNNM , yes you should be able to get $80 if they honor the $50 deal.

Different stores, different levels of thoroughness. If they can't get the tray to open in the first or second try they will probably defect it out. If one game doesn't play right they should check a second one because they can't say for certain if the game is defective or not half the time themselves. The $140 with promo is without the HDD.
Also , to GUNNM , yes you should be able to get $80 if they honor the $50 deal.
Which isn't guaranteed because technically they are supposed to remove the promo on defective hardware. Most stores don't follow that though.

Fantastic guys! Thanks for the input! :)

Unfortunately, I just realized I have my HD component cables at home still connected to my bedroom TV. I use an off-brand VGA cable here at school. Any chance they'll take the system w/o the video cable, or with the VGA cable, instead?

Need the video cables and I can't say for certain but I figure you would need something that probably had at least the standard RCA cables on them somehow. You could probably buy A/V cables from them and then trade them with the console. That's what they do with a lot of the consoles if you are missing a part.

So the 50$ promo should be automatic in the system correct? I'm sending my bro tomorrow cause he works right next to one

Hey guys figured I'd ask for some input. My brother's XBOX 360 that we bought back in November of 2008 is kind of starting to show some wear. The disc drive usually has a hard time reading games and comes up with "Disc is Unreadable" So I figured I'd try to go and trade it in and see if I can get away with getting 140$ for it. So now here's my dilemma.

I am going to give him MY 360 which I recently bought and works great, so that means I want to get a new one. So my question is what do you guys think I'm better off doing? Should I get an Arcade unit for 200$ and buy the 250gb for 130$ which ends up being 330$+tax. OR should I buy the Elite bundle, which costs 300$+tax and trade back in the ODST and Forza 3? According to the TIV, ODST is getting 9$ and Forza 3 is getting 16, so that's 25$ or so. Ugh such tough choices!

According to the TIV, ODST is getting 9$ and Forza 3 is getting 16, so that's 25$ or so. Ugh such tough choices!
Depends, do you want more memory, or the games? I'd go with the elite, cause, i mean, 120 GB should take a LONG time to fill. I dont even have a 360 anymore lol.
