Guitar Hero II - General Disscusion - Indie Pack #2 - 3 Songs Up Now
For someone who's never played the GH's before, this game is tough. I think I can cancel my gamefly subscription for the time being, this is going to last me for a long time.
Seriously - this sounds dumb - but just keep practicing. I found this game to be extremely difficult when I fist got it on PS2 that even the Medium songs were tough for me to finish. Now I can 5-star most of the medium songs and I'm 3/4 through the hard levels. Just keep playing and you WILL get better.

I remember when I first started playing Ouendan on the DS and really struggled with some of the normal level songs. Eventually, I was able to ace all the whole game and EBA. As a side note, I heard "Material Girl" on the radio at lunch yesterday and had a flood of numbered icons flashing all over my eyes. There are some dangers to over-playing these games ;)

I've eben really invovled in music for a long time, though (band, choirs, etc.). I wonder if rhythm games are easier or harder for people who can read music. On the one hand you've got a good sense of rhythm generally. On the other hand, tracing a ball down a path or watching flashing arrows isn't exactly standard musical notation. ;)

Yeah, I got that impression when I tried it at CC. I've also never played a GH game, and I went straight to Sweet Child O Mine - feeling cocky since I actually can play the song on a real guitar. So it starts, and I'm all over the place... I quit and decided my first track should be Surrender by Cheap Trick instead. After a minute or two I found the rhythm, but it certainly is a unique experience. I'm dying to combine two of my favorite hobbies and have some fun next week...

So I've been hesitating on dumping off the PS2 version for this one because I love it so much.. after seeing that achievement list, i'm not hesitating anymore. I hope I can still get it on launch day.. my store only received enough for preorders, so my only hope is someone cancelling their preorder.. *crosses fingers*

Frick.

Harmonix new title is going to be announced to the world come Monday. Well, I should say that MTV, EA, and Harmonix new title. The new game will of course be music based, and involves some big wigs of music publishing as well as record labels in general. No idea what platform it is going to be announced for, but the Wii has a good a shot as the PS3 or 360. Keep your fingers crossed!

Electronic Arts, MTV, and Harmonix will announce the Guitar Hero maker's next game this Monday in an early-morning teleconference. In an email to media late Friday night, representatives of the companies said that MTV and Harmonix will also unveil a "first of its kind" partnership with major record labels and music publishers; representatives of those labels will be on hand during the teleconference.
Electronic Arts announced at Game Developers' Conference earlier this month that they would publish Harmonix's next game, but did not give any more details at that time.

Whatever it may be, i'm going to buy it. 80's GH? Mine. One Hit Wonder GH? Mine. Accordian Hero? Mine. A remake of Guitar Hero featuring the exact same songs only sung by the real artists? Mine.

Did anyone get it at CC and get the 1600 points card. A bunch of stores by me have it in stock but I might just wait until tomorrow so I can get the card.

I am going back tomorrow if I decide if I want points or a bag for my guitar.

EDIT: Oh yeah, just got back from Brighton(30ish miles away),MI for my early Guitar Hero II filled weekend.

I still tap out that first part of lets dance every time I hear it.

It can't really be a GH game, because Harmonix is now separate from the company that owns GH, which is Activision I think. Which is why Neversoft is doing the next GH game. This sounds like it involves newer music, so I'm not very excited about this, but I am very excited.

Picked it up this afternoon and have played through about 3 sets of Easy mode. I retained more of my skills from briefly playing the PS2 GH1 last year than I thought. Adding that 4th fret is probably going to blow my mind though. ;)
Hey Daroga, gettin' ready for some old fashion face off?
If by that you mean, "Moderately able to keep your fingers from not tieing in knots on Easy mode" then, yes. ;)

Just a heads up to anyone wondering, the guitar is found by Windows XP and will install as a game controller, with everything functionaly including the whammy bar and "Star Power" tilt. Easy Frets on Fire here we come!

you think 4 is bad, wait till you get to 5!

I mean you only got 4 fingers, but there are 5 buttons. My fingers always get lost.

Wouldn't be suprised if it didn't work for my Vista

I thought the same thing when I got to hard and had 5 button madness. But I practiced more and more until I could do enough to get by. I have never managed to get more than 3 stars on any song on hard, Right now I am stuck on hard too as I can't beat psycho billy freakout.

The only one that seems way out of reach to me is the 1,000 note streak. I would imagine it would have to be a song on expert to have that many notes, and you would have to pretty much 100% the song.

You can get that achievement playing "Freebird" on Medium.

I ran through it in practice mode and I think there was a little over 1,000 notes. You can also get the 300,000 achievement easily on the same song/difficulty.

If you can get 5 stars on all songs in expert I would think 1,000 notes in a row would be easy...

Ugh, I had forgotten there was a My Chemical Romance song in GHII. 'Twas a very unwelcome surprise, indeed.

A good surprise, however, was that the Vans Warped Tour venue in Austin is actually Auditorium Shores. I've been to a show there, and it was quite cool seeing it in the game :).
the guitar is found by Windows XP and will install as a game controller
SHIT yeah. This was the first thing I thought of after I got back home tonight, glad to see someone else already tested it.

For anyone that got to try out the 360 and played with the PS2 version, how are the fret buttons for the guitar? Are they as loud as the PS2's guitar or are they more sensitive meaning you won't have to press down so hard? I've heard a bit of both. Some said the strum bar was half as loud, but the fret buttons were twice as loud as before.

The buttons seemed fine, the strum bar you didn't have to put nearly as much pressure on.

The start and back buttons are tiny as fuck and very out of the way, though

Carry me home is the one song on normal that is kicking my ass. I haven't learned how to actually incorporate HO/PO's yet, so it isn't even close.
How long is the cord?
About 8-9 feet....someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm glad they dropped "Carry Me Home" to a lower tier, since it was one of the more harder songs in the game.

I just beat Hard mode today and working on Easy mode to get some guitars. It's painful.
SHIT yeah. This was the first thing I thought of after I got back home tonight, glad to see someone else already tested it.
I actually played a bit of Frets last night. It's obviously not as solid as the real GH games, but it's good. I hope this week or next we get the chance to download the whole GH1 soundtrack. I think I tended to be more familiar with the songs on that one than GH2 as a whole, but there's good stuff on here that even if I don't know I'm really getting into.

It seems, for me at least, having songs that you know / really like in a rhythm game is an added bonus. Even if there are saongs you don't like ro don't know by the end you're digging them anyway.

GH's design is such that even the easy patterns are fun. Although, I do laugh sometimes as I'm strumming along and the real guitar part is going bat-s**t insane and think, "Yeah... this is not going to go well at a harder difficulty." ;)

I beat Easy last night and now I feel like total ass. I think I caught a cold. I love how everything moves away from you after playing the game for awhile. Reminds me of doing acid and starring at posters for hours at a time. I like the game, even though I suck.
Psh you guys think you're all cool playing the game early ;-)

I just hope FYE has it on Tuesday.
Get it at CC, foo'. You get a free 1600 points card.

Just unlocked Trogdor. Totally forgot that was in this game after reading about it being in the PS2 version months ago. Fantastic. And Medium and whipping me up and down. Easy it was a rarity to not get 5 stars, the two songs I've done on Medium have been 3 stars and 4 stars. Lovely. ;) Stupid non-coordinated pinky finger.
Get it at CC, foo'. You get a free 1600 points card.
FYE has it for as low as $8. So that'd be my choice too if I was the lucky type.

I tried playing GH2 with the regular 360 controller, what a pain trying to sync the sensitivity of the triggers with the bumpers. The ergonomics werent too good either in comparison to the PS2 version. Guess ill have to wait til i can find a decent price on a 2nd guitar ($60 is a bit too much for me).
I hope this week or next we get the chance to download the whole GH1 soundtrack
In the IGN review they mentioned that a handful of the GH1 songs would be available roughly a week after GH2's release. It isn't officially confirmed I guess, so that review mentions that a reliable source informed them about it.

Does anyone know if you earn money on Medium difficulty? I've finished Hard and Easy and I want to buy some more things in the shop. I've 5-starred the first 7 songs on Medium and haven't earned any money yet.

And yes you can get money on Medium. :)
Come on Iron Man as download content
Yes. Please!

The guitar feels good to me. Although I don't have anything to really compare it to, as I last play GH about 6 months ago and had a well-used original guitar to use. The whammy bar works fine for me though.

Random question someone might know. Occasionaly there are notes on the field that are brighter than the others, but not stars. What does that mean?

Those are hammer-ons and pull-offs. You don't have to hit the strumming bar to register the note. Like if the sequence was green-yellow and the yellow was glowing all you have to do is hold down green, hit the strumming bar and then hit yellow to get credit for both notes.

Any word on how much the songs will be a piece? Or will they be sold in a package. I just want to get an idea for how many microsoft points I am going to have to buy.

Does 100 points a song sound fair enough?

80 points would be a dollar, so that would probably be reasonable to me.
