How many CAGers actually have an HDTV and are ready to "take it to the next level," how many of you will be stepping up soon, and how many of you couldn't care less?

EDIT:

What about the option "I'll get one when the prices come down" or "I want one but not for gaming."

I left this option out purposely. Anyone who has chosen not to buy an HDTV until the prices drop further is clearly not motivated by games, but rather cashflow as justification for purchasing an HDTV. This poll focuses on whether or not Games are/were THE motivating factor for purchasing/owning an HDTV. It sorta ties into Sony's opinion that HD gaming is the future, which I happen to disagree with but I digress...
you options are weak. I want to get one, but not soon, so what do I choose?
Yeah, I had to say I don't really care since games aren't motivating me to pick up an HD TV. But I will certainly be getting one when the cost is justified to me.

Your third option should be "I can't afford a HDTV" because if all things were equal no one would prefer a standard set over HD.

Games are not the motivating factor in the decision regarding whether or not to buy an HDTV, because I'm not convinced that it provides a superior experience.
To put this in perspective, I'm not even using S-video. I'm using yellow composite video. And its fine. I can afford an HDTV just the same as I can afford a $10 S-video cable. But it simply doesnt do anything for me.

You can get the same quality out of a VGA adapter. If you can't afford an HDTV, but you can afford to post here, you can drop $20 on the cable. Its small, but its 1/10th of the cost of the cheapest HDTV.

Dont wanna be a d*ck to you here but HD-Ready TV's can play HD games...you just cant watch TV in HD w/o a tuner....so the question is kinda moot

I think you missed his play on words...

Oh, and I bought an HDTV strictly to play the original Xbox on back in 2001.

That's assuming I want my game room to look goofy with my 17" Trinitron sitting on my TV stand instead of my 27" CRT ;)

Though I did play games on my 15 year old 13" TV for a bit in my last apartment, that was alright.

Or you could put the 360 next to the computer when you want to use it there. My computer is close enough to my TV that the cables reach anyway.

I'm just saying, should someone want HDTV quality and can't afford an HDTV, theres no reason why they can't use their monitor. If its just not important enough to you for either one, thats fine. Not everybody needs or wants anything beyond standard TV.

I'm currently rocking a 26" Samsung LCD, the same model used for the 360 kiosks. While it is barely large enough to consider an HDTV, I'm a poor college student and also use it to double as my computer moniter. That said, I'm loving it.

We'll all have to upgrade eventually -- HD will become the government standard for television. They'll back an adapter available for SD televisions, when the change is made... but I'd just rather have an HDTV.

As shipwreck already pointed out, you missed my fancy word play on this poll option. Read it again. And carefully this time. :p

Isnt there a new technology coming out at the end of the year, thats 1080p and a lot cheaper to produce? I have a crt HDTV and a 21 inch monitor with component and hdmi ins, but this new tech could be the shizzle.

1080p is already out and no it isn't cheaper. HD is not an FCC mandate. The move from analog to digital is. However, if you're buying a digital set you are most likely buying a HDTV. So we'll get almost all hd content down the road as a byproduct of this.

My parents are going to get themselves a 50" plasma, although they don't plan on getting me one, lol. Hopefully I can find a job over the summer and save up as much as I can so I can get one by the start of the college football season.

"Are you Ready" ill assume thats what you meant...ok then i feel better "already" now I must get back to this thing called "work"

We have a Hitachi 53" HDTV ready monitor... it doesn't support 720p (only 540p) and 1080i. So, even though we only have component input, we still get 1080i (which is still the standard).

Good thing you don't need a HD Tuner for HD quality gaming.. that would suck. I plan to get a 19" widescreen LCD for my new computer which I hoping to use as my main monitor for the next gen consoles though I'll have to invest in a component to VGA adapter of sorts.

So what kind of hook up do you need on the monitor itself to use the VGA? My current monitor just has the one cord that connects to the back of the pc. Should I look to invest in a monitor that has some other sort of input connector if I want to go VGA?

i play at 480p on folk's set every once in a while. it's good but not "omg i wanna blow a grand on one of these" good.

Thats because 480p is not HD.

What about "I have an HDTV but don't use it for gaming"

I have a 56" Samsung DLP Projection TV. I tried to use it for gaming, but the games didn't look nice with the current gen. is there a difference btw using an LCD or DLP HDTV for gaming?

besides, the TV was a present for my father for fathers day last year. I'm thoroughly satisfied with using component cables on my standard 36"CRT tv.

Most monitors do not have anything more than a VGA input... and to use component or composite, you either need a converter (very expensive) or get the adapter/cable from the manufacturer. Only the DC and Xbox 360 have one, I believe.

The PS2 has one but it's only for use with the PS2 Linux kit.

So basically the same connector that runs from my monitor that connects to my pc also connects to the vga cable microsoft sales? Or should my monitor have a separate input for that? This is the only thing that really confuses me about gaming through vga.

I've been really tempted to pick up an HDTV but I figured that I'm going to try to pay off my credit card debt first and then mod my car before I invest in HDTV.

My friend has some 50 inch tv thing he spent about 3 or 4 k on, and we ALWAYS have to play games on it. Not that I mind (since we can mess up his place instead of mine), but I really don't see the draw for it. Well, I take that back, I guess I can see WHY you'd want one, but I don't see why he spent 3 grand on one. He let me borrow his 360 to play oblivion, I hooked it up to my $230 Walmart CRT flatscreen via S-video, and I swear to God the difference betwen his rig and mine didn't even strike me. However, his sound system is cool.
I don't watch enough tv to want to buy an HD set. I haven't had cable in about 8 years, and I honestly don't miss it. I watch movies MAYBE once every two weeks or so, and it looks great with RCA hookups. I also don't play a ton of console games anymore, which is the other reason to get an HDTV (from what you guys say). From my point of view, I don't really care about HD, so I don't understand why it's a must-have for people. However, I can see wanting to take advantage of it if you have it. The real beef I have is not with HD, it's with the people acting like you're some dumbass Luddite because you don't have a set with HDMI. Maybe if I get a 360 (PS3, whichever) I might get a new tv, but that's mainly because I want a bigger screen.

I don't currently have an HD set nor plan to get one this year, but the next gen consoles will be the standard until at least 2011-2012 I'd imagine. I definitely plan to have an HD set by then so I do care about HD gaming. But I suppose for this poll I'm HD STFU!

I'm not sure which to vote for. I currently have a VGA adaptor for my XBOX and play it on my PC monitor (only about 10 games are actually HD on XBOX though) and when I get a 360 I'll buy the VGA cord for that too. I don't have an HDTV, and I'm not buying one soon, but I am playing a few games in HD.

I paid $2500 a year ago for a 56" Samsung 720p DLP. I plan on upping to a 66" 1080p Samsung within the year. Once you go HD, you can't go back.

Yeah, its the same connector as the one your computer uses. It makes life easier if your monitor has 2 of them, so you don't have to unhook and rehook all the time, but its not necessary.
