I'm looking forward to picking up a PS2 on black Friday at EB/GS, and I want to get the best story driven games, so I thought I'd turn to this community.

Could you share with my your top 5 or 10 story driven games (as opposed to say, your favorite action or racing games). My favorite PC games have been the Witcher, Thief 3, and Dark Messiah, all of which had very compelling story lines to back up good gameplay. On the Wii, I am playing Killer 7- chiefly because the story is compelling me to figure out what the hell is going on :)

Thanks for any suggestions!

I can already guess some of the suggestions that are coming so I'll just start them with Indigo Prophecy. As everyone will tell you, the story gets a little shakey towards the end but I enjoyed it still and you probably would too.

I was going to say that too. Great game.

Also, obvious ones are the Metal Gear games. Also Jak 2 and 3 are very story driven which is one of the reasons I really liked them.

ico and shadow of the colossus, they are great games with little story. but the story it has is open to interpretation which makes em great

NBA 2k8 is epic.

Seriously though, Silent Hill 2 for sure... it's a great psychological/supernatural thriller with decent survival horror gameplay.

Silent Hill 2 DEFINITELY.
The Devil May Cry trilogy.
Soul Caliber 3 has a surprising amount of story (and customization) for a fighter. Just beware the memory-card glitch.

If you're in to RPGs, which are story-driven by nature, check out:
Shadow Hearts Covenant
Persona 3
Nocturne

I loved the Xenosaga series, but its JRPG nature can be a huge deciding factor depending on who you are. The first one has an anime look, which was hard for me at first, but once I got over it, the story was engrossing.

Indigo Prophecy
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Beyond Good and Evil
Disgaea
Jak & Daxter series
Ratchest & Clank series (older games)

I also wanted to buy a PS2 sometime soon. Mostly for Metal Gear, Resident EVil 4, and God of War. You said you were picking one up on black friday at EB/GS, why, are they having any promotions?

You get a $30 gift card I believe.

Shadow of Destiny was pretty decent. You can probably get it for like 5 bucks.

Most of my choices have already been said.

Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Beyond Good & Evil, Indigo Prophecy, MGS2, MGS3, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, Obscure (I liked it..), Okami

Bully (and really any of the Rockstar GTA series)
Beyond Good and Evil (spiritually akin to the LucasArts games of old)
Max Payne (bullet-time noir-parody)
Sopranos (story-driven and it feels like an episode or two of the show but it plays soooo monotonously)

ranked in quality from highest to lowest, natch.

If yer a kid of the 80's, definitely look into GTA Vice City, since it has many 80's references, lots of the music and TONS of well known names doing voices for many memorable characters(Burt Reynolds, Ray Liotta, Dennis Hopper, Jenna Jameson).

Out of the three(I don't count the PSP ports since they weren't on the PS2 to begin with) original PS2 GTA games, that's the best of the trilogy imo. Although, San Andreas also has some great VA and a decent story, it's nowhere near the masterpiece I consider VC to be.

Also, check out The Godfather for PS2 for a decent story driven action/shmup/GTA clone.
