Hey guys,

My friend has a Slim PS2 which recently stopped working. He told me he'd pay me to fix it.

I've been looking on google & all around, but no information on this.

What happens is, the brake is stuck forward. When you close the tray thing, the brake is still on, and the discs dont spin.

Has this happened to any CAGs? Any remedies for it? Thanks guys.

:edit: Sorry if this belongs in the PS2 repair thread. Figured i'd get more results posting a topic. Feel free to move if this dosen't belong, mods. Thanks.

Try cleaning the lens with just a q-tip, no water on it or anything. I had a Dreamcast that did that, cleaned it with a q-tip(meaning dust on the lens) and worked fine.

If the brake is stuck, take apart the PS2 and remove the spring holding the brake in place. Problem solved.

But then, it would not STOP spinning(if you take the brake out), even when the lid is opened, correct?

Honestly, try opening and closing the lid a bunch of times with a game in, as that may help to unstick it in another way(aside from taking the 'brake' completely out of the system).

My one buddy had this happen with his nieces system, where the discs wouldn't spin. It happened a couple times, then worked itself out, but sometimes it COULD be that the spindle that spins the discs is also burnt out already.

I know that that was a known problem with the slim PStwos, much like the horrid DRE's that occured in many 'fat' PS2s(and some of the slims).

Good luck either way....

I don't know. My slim stops the disk when I turn the power off with no brake...but I don't know about when I open the lid because my sensors are taped down. No I'm not a pirate, but I am the fool that spent almost 60$ so I could play namCollection (J) ($27 game + $35 for swap magic). Thought I'd get to play a 480i Klonoa, turns out I was wrong. Ridge Racer runs 480i on the disk, but not really (its still the same 240p graphics just interlaced--weird). I'm not bitter or anything...

See, I've heard of the slim PStwos spindles no longer working after as little as 2 months or as long as a year. The slims developed this problem, much like the fat ones had the DREs(and the slims STILL get the DRE, which is no shock to me).

However, I cannot even begin to guess what the problem COULD be, but I will reiterate to keep retrying the disc(s) you're having problems with and see if opening and closing the lid a couple times works to fix it.

If not, it could just be that the spindle is DEAD already. A replacement can be had from richspsxparts.com, who usually provide free shipping with all orders.

I wish I could be of more help, but I have very little experience with the slim PStwos, but I HAVE heard of them getting dead spindles and all out dying within a year before, as well as having major compatability problems in Japan(silver PStwo there).

I thought the DRE with the original PS2's were bad, but this sounds worse. My original PS2 never had any DRE except once when trying to play a scratched DVD movie but it is broken (water damage) so I am going to get a slim PS2 next week. I hope I don't have any Spindle issues.

yeah i almost thought about getting a ps2 slim (mostly cuz it looks cool and is not fat) but yeah i didnt afterall and have had my fatty ps2 for like 5 years now with not DRE.... that sucks that the slim ps2 has double the problem (DRE and spindle problems) but i hope you can fix this problem OP.

There were even documented compatability problems with PS1/PS2 discs on the silver slim PStwos, Yoshi, though those were in Japan, but I have heard of people having slims 'brick'(completely die) on them within a year.

Probably the best thing to do if you want another PS2 is to buy a DRE PS2 off of Ebay for $30 or so, then find a reputable site that sells new replacement lasers and just swap out the old laser for a new one.

It's still cheaper than a new PS2 in most cases AND less worry since you know you did it yourself rather than worry bout someone else messing it up. Don't worry, there ARE videos on YouTube that show you HOW to do it.

Other problems I've heard of for PS2s, aside from the DREs are disc scratching(when someone has tampered with the laser height and put it too high and it actually hits the disc when trying to read), controller/memory card ports going dead(usually the memory card ports go completely dead while leaving the controller ports working) and the one that prevents the system from keeping a working clock(the battery on the motherboard dies).

I've had a couple PS2s I just goofed around with to fix most of those problems, cept I don't like to try and unjuryrig peoples botched height adjustments, since you might do more damage that way.

Good luck either way, but if your friend can't figure it out and you can't, then call 1-800-345-SONY(Sony's repair line #) and tell them the problem. For $45 they'll swap out the malfunctioning PS2 or for $75 they will fix it. That price does NOT include shipping costs though, so that may tack on another $15-25 or more.

Again, good luck either way....
