hey i just got a sega cd from a trade on here and i really never had one so i dont know hot to check if it works. it came with the genesis and all attached and an ac adapter and an rf adapter. ok so i power up the genesis and ot works fine but isee no power coming from the cd. is there a way to turn it on. im noticing behind the unit that the cd base under the genesis has audio outputs and an ac adapter plugin. do i need a special sega cd adapter??? i thought the genesis one would power both

The genesis one does power both. Sometimes you have to push the sega CD and Genesis closer together. I think the Sega CD has something to plug in as well.

damn so how do i get it to boot the sega cd. are there any lights indicating power. do i turn on genesis without a game in??
Yes, make sure the Genesis doesn't have a cart in it.

Edit: do you have the AC adapter for it? Some can go directly off the Genesis' power, but every one I've ever had needed it's own power source as well.

The older model Sega CD(bottom one) has green and red lights on it that should come on when the Genesis is turned on. You push the reset button on the Genesis to open the Sega CD tray.

Both Segacd AND Genesis must be plugged in,a dn the ceonnection from one system to another has to be tight. there will be a red light on the cd portion. This all with the assumption that its a Sega cd model 2 (which visually fits with the genesis modl 2)

The big bulky one had its own power supply, and it took the same type as the Genesis.

If the unit has an AC input then it must have a separate power supply. I can't say for sure because I only had the original.

If you can't get the adapter from whoever you traded with, you can probably get one at Radio Shack without much trouble.

I loved the Sega CD.

so theres no confusion ill post a pic so you can see which one i have

I got one from a friend of mine and he had to send me an adapter. so i aparently had to have two, one for the Genesis and one for the SegaCD.

I have the old first generation Genesis with the say version of the CD that you have.

If you turn on the system with no cartridge in the Genesis it should bring up the attract mode demo screen for the Sega CD. If it doesn't you don't have everything connected right or the unit is dead.

My own Sega Genesis CD + 32X stack (with Sega brand wall wart power strip!) is all first gen so I can't offer much help byond that.

I'll attempt to clarify here, though with so many people clouding things already...

I had a Sega Genesis (first model), and a Sega CD (second model) for MANY years. These units worked great together, though they required an "extension" be attached that was included in the Sega CD box, as the first model of Sega Genesis is longer than the Sega CD's base allowed.

BOTH the Sega Genesis AND the Sega CD REQUIRE their own AC Adapter. Simply put, the Sega CD will NOT FUNCTION without it's own, seperate power supply.

The only way to play Sega CD games with a single AC Adapter would be to purchase a Sega CDX. These obviously are "all-in-one" style units that are MUCH smaller than the old consoles, and after trading for one... I got rid of my old Sega "combo".

I think you'll find there is a decent chance that unit will work if you get an AC Adapter for it. But there ALSO should be an audio cable that connects the Sega Genesis to the Sega CD, and without that... you won't get any sound through your speakers, TV, etc. Pretty important in Sewer Shark, and while you could play "Rage In The Cage" without sound... I certainly wouldn't want to.

Best of luck!

dam where can i find this audio cable and ac aqdapter for sega cd...the person i bought it from didnt say i need all tehse cables so i assumed it would work jus tlike that....guess not

and i dont think theres any other port on the genesis so how would i connect the red and white av cables?

the sega cd AC adapter is the exact same one for the genesis. Shouldn't be too hard to track down. the mixing cable for the audio is a red/white on one end and 3.5 mm jack on the other. radio shack carries them.

the regular genesis adapter wont plug into the sega cd one. and where do i plug in the other end of the mixing cable. damn what a mission. i dont even think it was worth to get it. ive been able to play the games on my pc with an emulator

You don't need to use any audio cables into the Sega CD. The adapter on the Genesis will give you audio.

The power connector for the Sega CD is a Genesis 1 power cable. You seem to have a Genesis 2. Its the Genesis power cable without the yellow ring on the end. Both the Genesis and the Sega CD must have their own power cables, and be plugged in. You only need the RF cable on the Genesis to see and hear though.

To turn it on, you simply turn on the Genesis without a cartridge. I like mine, picked one up when Funcoland was clearancing them out for next to nothing. Pick up a 32x and you have a Genesis on steroids.

And remember, the only cable that needs to be plugged into the Sega CD unit is power.

anyone know where i can get an ac adapter for the sage cd. i need it now because i got a game that is not compatible with any emulators.,..it doesnt even say voltage or anything on the unit so i dont know what type.

Look it up on Google and find a Sega CD FAQ. It should have the proper voltage levels for the adapter that you need.

I recently bought a Turbo Grafx-16 w/CD add-on. It didn't come with an adapter, and I had a hell of a time finding one on Ebay. Luckily, the unit actually had the proper voltage settings on it, and I was able to buy an adjustable voltage adapter with a whole slew of different size connectors included for $20. You might need something similar.

well so far ive tried different adapter ive had laying around that fit but no luck...if the voltage is wrong it wont even turn on right??
