How serious is the PS3 Shortage?

So I noticed a week or two ago that Amazon was OOS of both models of the PS3. I checked today and they are still OOS. So I thought hmm I remembering hearing PS3 was suffering shortages in JAN (maybe due to demand in JA in late DEC)... so I looked on Gamestop - also OOS both models.

So I check Bestbuy same deal and no option for store pickup on 120gb while 250gb allows store pickup but any random zip code I try no stores are in stock. Is the PS3 really in that limited supply that you've seen in stores? Edit: Also OOS at Walmart & TRU.

For comparison Wii is in stock at Walmart, but not Amazon, Best Buy, Gamestop, or TRU. 360 is in stock everywhere.

i dont think its a shortage as much as they only had so much in stock and once they order more they will have more. if anything thvye been selling more ps3s than expected due to some of the recent releases and will sell more once gow3 comes out.

I used to only use my 360 ( in fact I was a DIEHARD 360 fanboy......but then last christmas Girlfriend bought me a PS3 " at the time I thought of it as Playstation Piece of Shit " but now that I have played multiple of the exclusives I have thourouly decided I enjoy playing the PS3 more ) . So maybe people want bluray players and the awesome exclusives......About time its only been out for what , 3 years

It seems like a shortage to me, just depends on how small or large of a shortage. Amazon's been OOS for a while. And there was shortage throughout JAN. I haven't checked in B&M lately though. Maybe a new SKU is coming? Target has Wii's in stores according to their site, but doesn't even have a listing for PS3 consoles anymore.

i work in electronics at walmart and we get the occasional listing of stock issues it said ps3 stock would be limited until week 16 this is week 6 so im going to assume it will be a while before theres a steady supply again although we got like 10 in today off the trucks so who knows

Someone I know has been trying to buy one for two weeks and hasn't been able to find one anywhere locally.
you should buy up all the stock you can, and then in 5 years they will be worth 5x the amount.
Do this, and flip them to get a PS4. :bouncy:

PS4 will be the real 4D gaming machine.
If you must know the truth, there isn't a shortage of PS3s, just a shortage of HDDs to go in them. ^_^

Be patient. :bouncy:
thats why im saying its not a shortage. why make more systems if youre only selling so many at a time. i figure theyre getting rid of all the ones they already have made and once theyre mostly sold or completly sold out they will make and ship more as needed. that way you dont have a glut of consoles just sitting around not being sold. its not a shortage as much as i guess inventory control.

This is not the time for inventory control though... MAG, Heavy Rain, BF 2, MLB 10, Yakuza 3, FF 13, God of War. If they're going to have stock issues for another 10 weeks that is not intentional.

We got one poster saying his friend has been trying to get one for 2 weeks and can't and another claiming limited stock across Walmart. It's sold out everywhere online. And 10 weeks brings us to May 15th.

Why have limited stock during when all the biggest games are coming out, especially 1st party exclusives? It costs more to ramp production up and down than to have a steady flow going.

Those are some funny pics, the serious animals are scary.

supply im sure is relevant to location. where some people might not see any other people probably see alot of ps3s. theres no shortage what the wii went through was a shortage what the ps3 may be going through is just limited numbers in certain locations. on top of that if you cant find one in stores im sure its easy enough to get one online. hell maybe theres
a new bundle coming out.

as far as the topic of gaemes go i dont see people rushing out to get a ps3 for a number of the games you mentioned. ff13 and gow 3 are definite console sellers. the other games not so much. it would be interesting to know how any consoles were sold due to certain games.

Shortage: "Situation where the quantity available or supplied in a market falls short of the quantity demanded or required at a given time or price."

If people are looking for PS3s and can't find them, and stores cannot get more, that is a shortage. Arguing against that is just silly. Now, is it a manufactured shortage? Is Sony doing this on purpose? One can't imagine why during the release season of some of their biggest titles yet, and following up on the fantastic Christmas they had. Most likely they might be trying to sell through some supply for a new bundle, or they simply misjudged demand. Companies can't exactly start up or shut down manufacturing over night. You slow down manufacturing for a month and it will take you a while to catch back up. Nintendo has learned this the hard way when they underestimated demand.

Well, SonyStyle.com is backordered (both models). You may be able to order one off of sonyrewards.com. The date sonystyle.com has for backorder 4/1. Let's hope the demand stays high throughout the year and beyond. The PS3 is a great system; the more people who can experience it, the better.

it's not as serious as the wii shortage. the wii shortage was a bigger problem because everyone wanted one. but the ps3 shortage is only for a small group. so the first week may have shortages but the next week or so won't. for the wii, it was month after month.

Another poster claims his Target hasn't gotten any in 1.5 months... Sonystyle is backordered until April.

Wii went through a massive shortage. PS3 may be going through a moderate shortage. I already showed you can't find any online anywhere. I already mentioned maybe a new SKU is coming so they would need to have time to manufacture it and sell out of old supply. That means a shortage would likely occur. If some areas have none for weeks/months and others might have some, it still equates to a shortage. Elwood731 does a great job pointing out what a shortage is.

It's the onslaught of great games, while some are not system sellers when they're lined up next to system sellers they push a consumer over the edge imo.

So I did some googling. Apparently Sony announced themselves there would be a shortage for months, and the cause was the amount of consoles sold during the holidays and the momentum they have with great games coming:

This shortage is also reflected firsthand by consumers:

This article explains that the new hardware models Sony had submitted to the FCC may actually just be from new manufacturers. So perhaps they recently upped production to try and meet the larger demand they have. http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=235835

There definitely is a shortage. I rarely see PS3 consoles in stock and I see several customers wanting one. GameStop is taking preorders at every location I go to for a PS3. I'd have to go several miles away to a GameStop in the middle of no where to find a PS3.

Nah, those results all came up on 1st page of 1 search on google... http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rlz=1C1CHMI_enUS358US358&q=ps3+shortage&aq=f&aqi=g3g-m4&aql=&oq=
You seem like an intelligent guy on CAG from what I've seen you post in the past, I feel you just held onto an argument for the sake of being right. I mean you could've been right, but I believed all the evidence did point towards their being a shortage.

i really didnt think there was a shortage mind you i dont personally go looking for ps3s since ive had one for a while now but its surprising to see , or rather read, that there is a shortage.

as a ps3, ps2 and past ps1 owner its good to see them doing etter than they had been in the past and now if they would put forth the effort to beef up their psn dl games lineup ( ps1 and ps2 games) id be even happier. theres alot of money to be made there and if they went the extra mile to add in jp exclusives that never made it to the states with translations theyd make even more money.

I found a pile of like 10 of them at my local gamestop.
Been sitting there for like 2 weeks. No shortage here.
it would be interesting to know how any consoles were sold due to certain games.
This is something I'd like to look into for each system. I recall big jumps for PS3 with FF 13 in JA, MGS 4 in NA, and in 360 with Halo 3 - but that's just a few without getting into #'s.

I believe you.

I'd like to see more ps1 & ps2 and I think we will see that happen this year.

im sure mgs4 sold alot of ps3s though id be curious if it was more because of the bundle as opposed to the game itself. i know i got the mgs4 bundle more for the bc and a game and ds3 being included in it. hell i thought they would make a gow3 bundle too but that doesnt look like its going to happen.

There is a bit of a shortage where I'm at. I'm a little pissed that Sony came out and said "There is a shortage of PS3's, availability will be tight" because it can, and does, cause people to "panic" and buy the console irrationally. As others have noted Amazon's completely sold out of both models. They got some 120GB's in stock about mid-week but were OOS again in about an hour.

As for my local GameStops they're all out as well. I called ten yesterday and the only one available was a 60GB. Well the Linux abilities would be nice it's not necessary for me. Also, I don't have any PS2 games so the non-BC on the Slims isn't an issue.

Don't get me wrong however, since my launch XBox360 died about three months ago I'm looking to buy myself a PS3 for my birthday at the end of the month. I'm just hoping I can find a 120GB in time as the 250GB seems like a waste to me between the ability to upgrade the HDD yourself and the constantly falling HDD prices.

Sony might be stockpiling them for the release of GOW3. Lots of people will want a PS3 when that game hits.

So Sony is nothing but a hoarder? Maybe Sony will keep them until after GOW3 hits and sell them all on eBay.
