Humble Bundle Thread

After a month off, I returned to my side project of figuring out how to run PC games on those free Lenovo computers that I had received from the recycling pile at work after the company that I work for decided to upgrade.

Since I still couldn't get past the issue that I was having with the login username and password, I decided to convert one of them from Windows 7 to Kubuntu in order to attempt to run Linux.  I have discovered a few things about Linux.

1. Many of the games that I want to play aren't natively available on Linux (Fallout 3 and Spelunky among them).  There are ways to sideload standalone Windows games through Windows emulation or to play games through Steam, but it is a bit of a pain in the ass either way.

2. I own a buttload of games from Humble Bundle and itch.io already that will run on Linux (most of them are popular low-end indies that were released in the past 5 years or so), but I still cannot figure out how to run the commands to install the games.  Windows makes things so much easier than Linux.

I did find these instructions on the Humble Bundle website, so I will start here.

3. Retroarch will be my go-to gaming fix on this one until I figure out how to install the other games.  But I am determined to figure it out.

Metro 2033 was an epic freebie. Just an FYI for anyone with an itchy finger looking to jump on the deal. Not drm free though obviously.
Metro 2033 Redux from Epic Store works DRM-FREE style when ran from the EXE alone.

You will have to download it once via the EGS client-app first - but after downloading it, it works from the EXE itself without EGS running in the background.

How would you download it without the Epic app?

I haven't tried Legendary (open-source app some user made to avoid using EGS App via reverse-engineering and all), but I'd guess...people would use that app, to avoid any sort of EGS App stuff.

More here - https://github.com/derrod/legendary
Wow, do people really use that app to play internet semantics and say they don't use EGS? From the looks, it is just the EGS app reskinned. You have to log in, it uses EGS servers, etc.

More like Special Ed bundle, amiright...

Almost certainly frowned upon in this PC age, but whatev. Someone call the thought police and have me cancelled.

I actually thought more highly of you for the Special Ed comment about a terrible bundle for gamers with disabilities, but you let me Downs.

Honestly though, there's still a difference between being respectful of others and being candid about how awful the bundle is. Most of you know that I'm basically mentally handicapped on at least one level, and I'd feel patronized if someone was discriminative in a positive manner like this. It's the "kid gloves" approach, as if they are any less human. Being overly-sensitive or attentive to people with disabilities is the second-most offensive thing, other than openly mocking or hurting them.

A cursory glance at this bundle indicates just what you said: the curators threw together a shitty bundle under the pretense of supporting a good cause, as if they don't have to try as hard because it's a charity. The exact opposite would be true for anyone who truly cared. Make it a good bundle so it sells well and supports the charity more, instead of subsisting on the charity aspect to make it sell.

But throwing a bunch of crappy games and some DLC into a bundle and hoping people buy it to feel good about themselves is standard operating procedure for all of Humble's charity bundles. It doesn't make sense. These are the bundles where sales are the most important.

Just to clarify, my comment/gif was directly referencing the quality of bundle's games, NOT the benefiting charity. My tastes are poor, but not that poor-ish, for the most part.

The Corel/Photoshop/Painter bundle seems pretty good, no?

Thinking about The Boys bundle, too.  Anyone know how comprehensive it is of the comic's run?

If anyone was on the fence about the Humble Book Bundle: Raspberry Pi Press bundle, most of the issues included are available for free on the Raspberry Pi Press family of websites.

All of the Wireframe issues are available in PDF format here:

https://wireframe.raspberrypi.org/issues

The Build Your Own FPS book and the Coding the Classics book in the third tier are available in PDF format here:

https://wireframe.raspberrypi.org/books

The Make Games With Python book in the first tier is available in PDF format here:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/make-games-python-latest-e-book-magpi-essentials-range/

The Retrogaming With Raspberry Pi book in the second tier is available in PDF format here:

https://magpi.raspberrypi.org/books/retro-gaming

But none of the Custom PC magazine issues are available for free, and subscriptions to the magazine run about $90.  So, I paid $1 for access to the first tier just to see if I like the magazine.

Many of the Learn to Code the Fun Way bundle books are free as well, some only in web form but others even as PDFs.

It exists, so....I guess. [shrug]

I haven't used it, so...I don't know entirely. I just know it exists - and some people use that instead of EGS. [shrug]

Me, eh - I'm used to client-app Epic store, so I just use that.

There is some other interesting stuff underneath in the info part of the page. It says there are offline modes here that can run games w/out Legendary (or EGS), so...that's interesting. If there's a workaround for same SP-based games and to get games working offline without any strings attached, that's great; especially if it can get around any of EGS's DRM (which can't otherwise be got around).

Many titles, it's as easy as using "-EpicPortal" in command line to get around any EGS DRM or EGS-forced launching, for example.

For example, it's nice XLive-Less exists, so I can get around some of the old G4WL-laced problems...and just be able to play the game I paid for.

I don't know how Legendary works entirely; haven't tried Legendary it...so.... [shrug]

I do wonder how important client-app reverse engineering will be, when services like EA Origin, Steam, UPlay, and other things of that sort go away, get retired, or whatever.

I don't see any of these major players and their client-apps in the AAA industry going away anytime soon, though - but, anything to help us still be able to run our old stuff - especially if something goes wrong w/ any of those companies - would be great so I don't have to re-buy said title again from GOG or somewhere, if I do decide that I want to replay my old copy of a certain game.

If true that would be some cannabilism from the Daedalic bundle higher tiers. Honestly I would like that bundle as

I want Fae Tactics and the other Sunless game too. Also Shadows Awakening has been in bad bundles, so it may as well join another. Not amazing, but I'd buy it.

I actually like that bundle.  Several games I wanted and a couple that look interesting.  Only two that I already have.

I rarely have most of what is included, but this bundle has so many games that have been bundled elsewhere. I was hoping for something exciting this month like Tales of Vesperia, Ni No Kuni Remastered, Yakuza 2, or Valkyria Chronicles 4 Complete.

Still getting the $4 off coupon.  Even for $8, I have no interest in nearly any of this stuff.  The Blacksmith game looks sort of interesting but that will be in a Fanatical bundle sooner or later.

Lightmatter is alright. But I already have it from Twitch.

Hope I'll be able to redeem a month this holiday at least. I pause every month, and every month the bundles get worse.

I would have loved to have seen most of those in a Humble Choice.

Already have VC4: Complete though - but that would've been great for those missing it. And yeah, it's still backlogged. So is my Original VC PC game too.

They have such a safe space for pausing a month. I'm sure the radio buttons dictate where the response goes, and anything marked "Other" goes into a waste bin. That's where they got most of these games btw. Yanni and Shitty Slug could build a better bundle in 2 days.

I didn't even get a discount.
