The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Looks like Unbox and Yonder are getting Gamestop exclusive releases in the US.  They are both now listed on Gamestop.com with July release dates.

That's been up for a long time but "unavailable", doesn't look promising right now. Not saying it can't happen, but I wouldn't count on it. Surprising that such a big release us basically skipping retail, but at least there's an SRG version available.
Plus there will be a Limited Run Games version too, so there will be opportunities to get it physically.

Yeah, we're signed up to do their next 8 games, I think.
Are you at liberty to say around what quantities those 8 games will be on your end? As in, "similar to Strafe" where the LRG version is 1000 copies, or something more "normal LRG size"?

We're only distributing for them so it's all just 1,000 copies per game with a new LRG exclusive cover. The "main runs" will always be available through SRG's site.

My two copies of Strafe arrived today, nicely packaged in padded mailers, no damage and no floaters. Looking forward to playing the game!
Did you get it for ps4? If so and If you don't like the one you play or beat it and get bored I'll buy it for a reasonable amount. I really wanted it but at the time they didn't take PayPal and didn't accept discover card so I missed out. I don't care if it's open, I want to play it long as it's complete, I don't even care if the steam code that came with it is used.

I got them for PS4. I wouldn't mind selling one, but it would be my cost plus shipping to you, and isn't it still available to order from SRG?

https://store.specialreservegames.com/buy/shadow-warrior-2/ps4

I was able to add it to cart, but didn't check out because I already got my copies. Why not try to order from there first, would be cheaper for you since you wouldn't have to pay for shipping twice?

Edit: whoops I was looking at the Shadow Warrior preorder, not Strafe (which is sold out)! If you're interested in a copy just PM me and we can talk.

Copies of Slain for the Vita are starting to ship out. I got my shipping confirmation yesterday, so I'm guessing it'll come in the next few weeks.

Yep, same for me. I ordered two copies, and they where supposed to add them in to one order, as I was worried about them getting damaged being shipped separately, but I got two separate notices. So no telling how they will arrive, but I'm looking forward to the game either way.

Hopefully I don't need to put foot to ass over some poor shipping/packaging, but I will if I have to. LOL

Surprised to find Strafe in my mailbox today. Like everyone else is reporting, no shipping confirmation or tracking ever recieved. It just showed up.

With the glitchy website, the changing quantities with the LRG partership, and the being in the dark on order movement, I can't say my initial impression of Special Reserve is very positive. Hopefully, it's just growing pains.

Just remember that it's "not for resale", so you gotta keep it forever. 😬

I'm glad I'm not the only one who only received one copy out of the two ordered.

They are still claiming that the shippers were supposed to do combined shipping.  Hopefully the second one shows up.

I had tweeted them asking about combined shipping and they assured me both copies would be shipped together, in a box, and I would be refunded the difference in shipping.

As of now, I have no tracking info and based on yourself and others, my guess is they will be shipped together in bubble mailers. I am gonna be pissed if this is the case.

Just got my copy of Strafe in and the mailer they used was opened (looks like it wasn't forced open, just happened naturally) and the game luckily did not slip out- instead, it got caught on the adhesive of the mailer and now there's a big chuck of the mailer affixed to the game case...:whistle2:

my darksiders shipped over the weekend
Mine too. Really happy this actually came out because I've been wanting to play through it again. Back of the box says 60 FPS which I didn't think we would see with this release. Overall good game.

You should take pics of the damage and contact them about it, maybe they'll take care of the issue.

I've seen many people say 30 FPS as well but I'm not sure where their info came from.

I might try and see if I can't just remove it but it's right where the seal is so I'm afraid of using GooGone or anything.

And I must be having shit luck, my Darksiders Wii U was delivered on Sunday and is nowhere to be seen.

Got my copy of Strafe today.  It had a floating disc.  I've come to expect that from these things now unfortunately.

Also got my copy of Darksiders Warmastered for WiiU.  At least that one wasn't a floater (despite the absurdly large jumbo bubble mailer it was sent in).

Got both copies of Strafe today (one for me another for a buddy).  One came with damage to the case, and both had floating discs.  Easy fix for the floating discs, but the case, not so much.  Tried to contact CS about it, but the link on their site is broken lol.  Had to tweet them to ask who the fuck I can contact.

fucking bubble mailers man.

EDIT:

Here is how to fix the infamous "Floating Disc".  Works like a charm and today was my first attempt at it.

their website is absolutely abysmal and really needs a complete overhaul before they launch their next game. its unprofessional and honestly embarrassing at this point

anyway got my second copy of strafe in today. thankfully no loose discs

Well, my Slain Back From Hell for the Vita arrived today(one copy did at least), and of course it's smashed in on one end because of this shit cardboard mailer they used. I actually contacted them early on to ask that both of my copies be mailed together, as I figured that was the best way to insure damage prevention, and of course they shipped both separately after saying no problem.

I'm gonna for sure contact them, but I'm gonna wait for the second copy to arrive, to see what happens with that one. They did include a Signature Edition Sticker, that has the Vita release number on it, and the free coin for the delay is of decent quality as well. Overall the quality of the product looks nice, but as I suspected, shipping would be complete ass.

I just used that method to fix my Zombie Army Trilogy floater, works great.

They use the same mailer for 1 or 2 copies... sticking two copies in one mailer is probably worse.

I figured they would use that same mailer, but with two copies inside, it's more likely only one would get damaged, as these things have an exact weak point, which is where it folded in at the corners(the one on the bottom should have been fine). So yeah, not the greatest plan, and since they didn't do it anyway, it's a fail either way. Hopefully my other copy arrives in a better state, but I'm not to hopeful.

They assured me as so many places do, that their mailer was great, and would insure protection, which I knew wasn't going to be the case, so I'll be responding back to the original email and showing them the folly of their statement. LOL I hate being right when it comes to shipping, but it happens way more than it should.
