The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

2,600 copies, it says it right in the ad...
I'm aware of that. But I also remember that eastasia made a deal with LRG and play-asia for a game without those 2 companies knowing. I believe it was ghost blade hd but I'm not sure.

What does that have to do with anything?

This release of Cavemen Warriors is 2,600 copies. It doesn't matter if 10 other companies release it afterwards or its never released physically again; this specific version of the game has a quantity of 2,600.

Ok, I was being nice. Clearly that doesn't work with you. Yes, this release is limited to 2600 copies but altogether physical copies of this game may not end up being limited to 2600 since it may be released through another company, as eastasia has done in the past. And they also announced they will rerelease rainbow moon, after it was released thru LRG (can't remember the "limit" on that) Hopefully you're not too fucking stupid to understand this.

LRG has already stated that they will not be publishing Caveman Warriors. They turned down the game.

But yes, like every game that has been released in this fashion, the developers always reserve the right to print more copies down the line elsewhere.

Also, eastasiasoft is owned by Play-Asia.

Are you sure EastAsiaSoft is owned by Play-Asia? I thought EAS was just teaming up with Play-Asia to use them as a platform to release their stuff.

The stuff that happened with Ghost Blade HD wasn't EAS's fault. It was the developer who did that

So... does anyone know what is going with the physical release of Redout for Switch? Yet again it seems to have been delayed... I really thought today would be the day.

The About Page on EastAsiaSoft's website says they are independent though.

The article could be talking about Play-Asia just "introducing" the new publisher/distributor like "hey. There is a new publisher. They have this neat arcade game called Soldner. We think you'll like it"

It reads as "We [Play-Asia] have initiated development of this game, developed by SideQuest [Also created as part of this], and to be published and distributed by eastasiasoft [Created as part of this]". Why would Play-Asia claim to initiate this, but also have no part in it? They created both companies. Honestly, my statement is probably wrong. Play-Asia may not OWN eastasiasoft. But Play-asia definitely created eastasiasoft and took part in the creation of or at least the funding of SideQuest Studios. Probably akin to Mighty Rabbit Studios and Limited Run Games being two separate companies created by some of the same people.

Play-Asia and EastAsiaSoft are not related to the best of my knowledge, outside of Play-Asia distributing the games EAS puts out.

There should be no worry that we'll publish Caveman Warriors. We had an opportunity to sign the game months upon months ago and decided not to. The opportunity came along right as we shifted towards "less games, bigger titles" as our signing mantra. Bear in mind we're still working on clearing out a lot of the smaller games we signed over a year ago, so you're not seeing the full brunt of that.

It's a given that EAS and competitors will pick up a lot of the stuff we pass on, though, which is totally fine.

Yeah, I guess the Caveman question was valid in regards to how many places might print copies, but I don't see it getting more than one run unless it sells out rather quickly. Soldner X2 was one of LRG fastest movers, and the Play-Asia version lasted over a year and then some. And if someone wants a physical copy of a game, why does it matter how many are produced? You want it, or you don't.

are you logging in? I believe that field only available on the page you fill out your shipping/payment info

Yea I was logged in, it just wasn't showing up at all. Thanks to all who tried to offer assistance. Tried again about an hour later before I went to bed and it finally showed up.

Had to go through checkout process a few times because the site was a freaking mess and there was some issue paying with PayPal. If I didn't have something else I was getting that only PA still had, I would've just stop trying completely. Glad to know they're still a shit show.

Is there any worry that you'll publish the Switch version of Dragon's Trap? :)

...But seriously I'd like to know if I need to order that or not.

Lol, this was the first thing I thought of, too. Have to decide whether I want to keep my Play Asia preorder or not!

Cursed Castilla is my favorite small print run game released so far. Game is a blast, looks beautiful, and will cost you over $100 for a ps4 copy.

Be ready when this game drops because it'll most likely sell out fast af.

Heads up, Amazon Spain says that Axiom Verge for Wii U has a release date of January 26, 2018.

Maybe it will come to the U.S. after all?

Did you check to see if your post office had the package? I've had to sign for every Play-Asia-exclusive, usually having to go to the post office itself when I wasn't home to sign.

They didn't, I've never had to sign for a PA delivery either, so I chalked it up to never showing up

I was actually going to grab the PS4 version, even though I didn't have a system. As I wanted to show support for the game, but it sold out so quick, I didn't get the chance. LOL I'll for sure be grabbing the Vita version as soon as it goes "live" this time, so I don't miss out.

Already have Cursed Castilla on the PS4. Don't know if I want to double dip. :/
Feeling the same way. Bought it on PS4 but could see myself wanting to play it on Vita like 3 years from now. And if I don't buy it now it will be worth a gazillion trillion dollars then. First world problems.

The Steam Link is awesome btw.   Mine just came in the mail today so I'm playing things like Icey, VA-11 Hall-A, and Ys on the big screen in the comfort of my living room.  There's no need to rebuy everything on console again. I'm using the windows 360 controller + dongle.  Haven't tried the dual shock 4 yet.

I'm always super impressed with things like this.  It started with the Super Gameboy.   I absolutely love my PS TV, the Nintendo Switch, and now my Steam Link for giving me more options to play my games on the big screens or on the go, rather than be confined to one screen.

This is important because so many of these games, which are now becoming available through small publishers, are available on Steam for a fraction of the cost.

How's the latency from pc to steam link?

It is not bad at all. But I have a 25-30 foot distance with nearly line-of-sight to the router. I'm sure it doesn't work great through thick walls.

I was playing Portal 2 with no issues earlier. But haven't really tried many graphically intensive games yet. The resolution so far is fantastic though. Text and everything is showing up with full HD clarity. The interface is also very nice. Will probably finally play through my PC version of Trials in the Sky now that I can couch it. :bouncy:

Pinball FX3 looks fantastic. You can detect a minimal amount of lag at times, but it didn't hinder my gameplay.

It also streams -anything- your desktop is doing straight to the television while it's on; it's not just for games.

Damn, too bad Wii U games are region locked. I have this digitally but would’ve gladly rebought it physical. Europe always gets more physical releases than we do. Examples off the top of my head- Slain: Back from Hell PS4/Vita, Teslagrad PS Vita, Minecraft PS Vita, Super Meat Boy PS4, Deadlight: Director’s Cut PS4/XB1, etc etc.
