CAGiversary!

Since the old thread was getting too large, I made this new thread to continue.

Apple iPhone & iPod Touch games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

Important Notes:

 1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iPod\iPhone. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
 2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
 3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
 4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
 5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
 6. Apps can be redownloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
 7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
 8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support site. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
 9. If you somehow break your iPhone or iPod Touch, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try these sites for do it yourself replacement parts & fixes.

Does anyone know if there are games for the 4G or 5G Nano? The latter comes with three good games on it, so it's obvious the device can handle them.
The Secret of Monkey Island is half off $3.99, and there's a free soundboard app too apparently!

Yaaargh. . .it's about time! I've been waiting around for another Monkey sale ever since I downloaded the free preview. Odd thing is I could only buy the full app through the demo. It doesn't show up when I do a search. Thanks for the post!

There used to be a section in the App Store for (regular) iPod games but it doesn't seem to be there anymore. My kids both got 16GB Nanos from "Santa" this year and they wanted to add some games. I looked around the App Store but ended up just giving them copies of Peggle and Zuma that I had purchased for one of my Nanos a while back.

Our favorite beautiful graphics and awful gameplay zombie slicer Twin Blades got a patch to add more tedium and unsatisfaction as well as, get this, an XBLA Community Games release. May as well try the demo there
Hey, don't post here much....but does anybody know about the app Beatmaker? Been following it for a while and the price hasn't dropped yet. I've seen videos on the app and it looks really complex but at the same time really fun. Anybody who has it have any info on it?
My cousin has it, and showed it to me on Thanksgiving. He's a struggling producer, and this is right up his alley of expertise (making beats and music to go with the rappers he helps trying to get up -- it's kind of like a notepad to a lyricist...he can jot down beats he's thinking about on the go) it's a serious app, not a game. If you know your way around sequencers (and to a lesser degree synthesizers) you'll feel right at home, if not, you'll feel hopelessly lost.

If, though, you're trying to look for a sequencer to get used to the idea, 20 bucks is money well spent on it. Can't find a physical one for anywhere near that price and so far as software goes, this one has tons of features. A budding iPhone dev could theoretically design all of the sound effects and music with just that program.

If you're just looking to have some fun, I'd suggest Beat It (an iPhone game that lets you tool around with the discovered soundboards after finishing the area). It's very limited on the music making but big on the theory behind using a sequencer and just having fun with it. You can make some new tunes using the same sounds from the game or remixes.

I'm not sure about Beaterator, but that's probably worth a look too. I'm sure it's not as serious as Beatmaker is, but I don't believe it's a "game".

Ah thanks for the tip. I was actually just looking for a way to make music since I heard you can import it to a computer for an animation I've planned on making. I have no experience with that kind of stuff so I guess I'll have to pass. Thanks for the help!

Thinking of buying one more game for right now...I'm thinking:

Rock Band + DLC track packs ($5-10)
N.O.V.A. ($7)
Ravensword ($7)
Secret of Monkey Island SE ($4)

opinions?

I splurged on RockBand and Monkey Island. Paying almost 10 bucks for (2) apps seemed pricey given the glut of free and .99 offerings lately, but I don't regret either purchase. Luckily, I scored quite a few iTunes gift cards over the holidays, too.

You can export. It's a very good app for doing what you want, you'll just have to wrestle with the alien interface. Once you get used to setting up your tracks and working out the beat like any musician would with sheet music (writing one instrument at a time, then tweaking each to what you've pictured in your head). You just need some musical aptitude to begin with, or at least have an idea in your head of what you want.

I'd suggest the program Acid though.

I don't want to scare you off from the program. It is intuitive, it's just not something a beginner is going to immediately "get". But if you're serious about crafting some tunes and beats for something, it's worth the price of admission. It would be nice if they had a demo though so you could experience what they're offering.

Thanks for the link, Malik. And thanks to everyone else who posted about the Nano games. You can't search for Nano games using power search and I didn't see the drop down option when I was clicking through ITunes searching for the click-wheel gaming section.

Think I'll be picking up Peggle, Bejeweled, and Scrabble, but I was wondering if Crystal Defenders or Song Summoner are any good. Has anyone here bought them?

Block sliding puzzle game Blockoban is normally $1.99, but the developer is celebrating release by giving out 1,000 free promo codes! Link here:

luxarific: I bought Song Summoner on my old iPod classic -- it's decent, nothing really groundbreaking as an SRPG but the only thing remotely like it on the iPod click wheel models, so if you like the genre it's worth it. The whole creating-characters-from-your-songs thing is a little gimmicky, but the game controls surprisingly well for having nothing but the wheel.

Song summoner has a demo on the iPhone/iTouch side, maybe they have one for the nano? I played the demo and really liked it. I'll be picking it up when the price comes down. $10 seems too high but it is supposed to have close to 40 hours of gameplay.

I could almost kick myself in the nuts..honestly.

I was going to purchase Rock Band last night for $5 when i was laying in bed scrolling through the app store...well i saw it was 160MB and knew it would download faster on my laptop instead of using my wi-fi, so I'd just wait til when i woke up this morn to download.

Now the game is back to $6.99; after me looking at it and debating for 3 days...omfg!

I thought EA could at LEAST wait until the new year before raising prices again..urggg

@JoBo4

if you want a handy little music creating app, I'd suggest 8Bitone. It might still be on sale for $.99 but if not, it's more than worth it. You can export with it as well. Beatmaker is probably more horsepower than you need and beaterator i believe is mostly preset loops and sounds. If you want to go to computer route, I'd recommend Ableton Live intro and search the web for free sounds and plugins. I think it's $100 but it's a workhorse. If you have access to a mac, you could always use Garageband, which is a preinstalled app. PM me if you have any questions.
Any idea what the difference is for the paid and free versions of MobileRSS? I'll definitely try out the free one, but it's something I'd be likely to use often enough that if the paid one has enough perks, I would spend the $3.

And since it was mentioned, I've used Handbrake for DVD ripping for forever since my desktop is a Mac, but apparently it is now Windows/Linux now as well (although it may have always been multiplatform). Can't speak to usefulness on other platforms as my laptop DVD drive is too noisy to bother, but it is quite capable on the Mac where it is my sole source of DVD ripping, both to digitally archive and rip to iPod.
Noob question--What is the difference between the Windows GUI and CLI "GUI: Graphical User Interface, CLI: Command Line Interface" versions in layman's terms?
Noob question--What is the difference between the Windows GUI and CLI "GUI: Graphical User Interface, CLI: Command Line Interface" versions in layman's terms?
Since you're asking that question, you want the GUI version.

CLI is one that you'd run by typing a command string at the command prompt. Most "normal" people want the GUI version, but the CLI version is great for doing things like writing scripts to convert a batch of files, etc.

Ha. That's exactly the clarification I needed. Many thanks.
Anyone hve experience with ravensword? Is it worth the price during the $5 sale?
i played a little bit and it's pretty darn good. Think of it like a small scale Oblivion-esque game. It's also one of iTune's "Best of 2009" apps
Any chances of Nova dropping in price? Kinda wanna bite at 6.99, but knowing my luck it'll drop to 4.99 a few days later.
With as popular as it has been, I could see a price increase before a decrease...

Believe me, I finished it yesterday and it was worth every penny at $6.99. I know our nature as CAGs is to not spend full price on a game but this one's worth it.

I see what people were talking about with the controls for Doom and Wolfenstein. Doom feels more fluid in the fact that you can variably speed up turning and Wolf 3D is more RE-style tank controls. It's still not terrible if you turn sensitivity all the way up, though.

If anything... an increase.

Haven't really been playing anything new, but with the new additions of OpenFeint in Fieldrunners and Minigore, I've gone back to hit those games pretty hard.

I love achievements!

Played a bit of NOVA last night. Really wasn't impressed. Yes, they pulled off an iPhone FPS, but it's not very good. Bad control, ugly characters, terrible VO... I know I shouldn't expect a $7 iPhone game to compare with a $60 console game, but I do at least expect it to be good. But again, I only played a short bit of it.

That's funny because most all the reviews praised the stuff you didn't find that enjoyable...i mean, they said it was probably the best pulled-off FPS for the iTouch. I have yet to play it, but that's because i'm a bit cautious to drop $7 on it...plus i'm still considering this or CoD: Zombies

Interesting though...
