This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it reached 5,000+ posts making a new thread is easier to read through.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Apple iPhone & iPod Touch games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

App & Game Review Sites

Important Notes:

  1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iPod\iPhone. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
  2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
  3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
  4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
  5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
  6. Apps can be redownloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
  7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
  8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support site. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
  9. If you somehow break your iPhone or iPod Touch, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try these sites for do it yourself replacement parts & fixes.
iFixit Touch Repair Guide ; iFixit iPhone Repair Guide ; TechRestore
  10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks.

My favorite part is
"- To all that can't play the game :
You must hold the off button.
This will turn your iPod off.
Then you must hold it again.
Your iPod will take a minute to work.
Then you can play all of your games that crash."

It just made me smile because of the way that it made the word "restart" into a lengthy paragraph.

Also, to all that can't access CheapAssGamer, you must press the W button. Then you must press it again. Then you must press it again. Then you must press the period button. Then you must press the C button...

is it just me, or is there just plain **** coming out as ipod apps for a while now?

I used to spend tons of money a week on apps, and now I seldom buy anything.

Nothing has made a breakthrough in the store to me like Sword & Poker, PvZ, Beneath a Steel Sky, and a few others did.

Maybe I expect too much out of a music device...but i know damn well that looking at some game's graphics, it's entirely possible to make a revolutionary game on the itouch.

Great App a Day is featuring the word puzzler Crossnerd LT (http://www.greatappaday.com/details/crossnerd-lt/). I think this is a lite version. However, it's also the only version available right now.

Free App Calendar has another utility today, Multilingual Converter! (http://www.freeappcalendar.com/details.php?id=177).

Your bonus freebie is described as an addictive mix of pinball and mini golf. Intrigued? Try Gravity Well for FREE for a limited time (http://itunes.apple.com/app/gravity-well/id310964731?mt=8#).

Another math-based game is currently available for all you number fiends out there. Numbers: Add 'Em has dropped from $4.99 to FREE for a limited time (http://appshopper.com/entertainment/num-nuts).

"It's like bejeweled with math. Great game."-FlushingFan

"This is a great app for those looking for a new twist on number games"-O'Jay

"This is a great game. Simple, yet addictive" - MEJHarrison

Objective

Your objective is to add up to as many target numbers as possible in the given time by dragging your finger across the numbered cells on the game board. Selected cells will wobble. Lift your finger when you are done selecting.

Note: You can select in any direction as long as the numbers are touching each other.

There are tons of bonuses and unlockable modes in this game as well.

You can now also listen to your music during gameplay. To enable this simply play your music prior to opening the app.

The retro shmup SpaceHero has dropped from .99 to FREE (http://itunes.apple.com/app/spacehero/id362036625?mt=8).

"SpaceHero is a classic retro style arcade game.

It was designed exclusively on Portrait mode to have more room to fly back and forth while playing.

Tap the buttons Laser on Bombs on the screen to shoot and defend your spaceship against the attacks of the enemies or just fly around and return fire, or simply pick them off from long range using the laser and see how fast you can blow up all the enemy spaceships!

The accelerometer is fantastic and responsive allowing you to get the best experience ever with multiple speeds.

You can control your space ship by dodging your device left to right or up to down and vice-versa.

It is simple and short but also very fun, but don't run out of gas, you could be hit by the enemies very easily.

Excellent in sound and graphic effects."

A sort of Mastermind-like puzzler, See-Quence, has dropped from .99 to FREE (http://itunes.apple.com/app/see-quence/id311239901?mt=8#).

"Can you unlock the secret sequence?

Reveal the 9-button sequence by pressing buttons in the correct order through split-second reflexes, keen short-term memory and trial and error. You’ve only got 60 seconds to discover the “See-Quence” and press all 9 buttons in the correct order!"

iOS4 June 21st and free for current iTouch and iPhone users.

Can't wait for the folders option (yes, I know I could already do this if jailbroken) in the new OS. Finally a way to get everything visable without having to hook my iPod Touch to a computer just to see the last "hidden" screen. I have too many apps (thanks, mostly, to this site and TouchArcade delivering the freebies!).

Anyone know if the new OS will also support more than the current number of pages?

better hardware than 2nd gen touches, can use fully featured 4.0

Oh I meant by mine being Touch late 2009 64GB. So fully featured 4.0 sounds good.
Thanks :)

Its true that a lot of freebies are about as good as the games on Action 52 - the reviled NES multi-cart. I think in part we've become pickier. Also, more indy developers are trying to make a quick buck on this hot device.

Personally, I can wait for the next killer app; I have quite the backlog, even if I now avoid 90% of the freebies.

Did you buy it? Your post tells us nothing.

From the reviews, the notes are "sticky" some say you can't keep your finger down after hitting a note to hit another note. From what I've read, it's better than rock band. As for how it plays, I don't have it. I just play rhythm games like tap studio.

Starts with 6 songs. Songpacks at $2

Song Pack 1

The Faint - “The Geeks Were Right”

Minus the Bear - “Secret Country”

Silversun Pickups - “Substitution”

Song Pack 2

Band of Skulls - “Death By Diamonds And Pearls”

Obits - “Two-Headed Coin”

The White Stripes - “Blue Orchid”

Song Pack 3

Darkest Hour - “The Tides”

The Dillinger Escape Plan - “Farewell, Mona Lisa”

Protest the Hero - “Limb From Limb”

Song Pack 4

A Day to Remember - “I’m Made Of Wax, Larry, What Are You Made Of?”

AFI - “Medicate”

Breaking Benjamin - “Diary of Jane”

Vampire Weekend Song Pack

“A-Punk”

“Giving Up The Gun”

“Holiday”

Queen Song Pack

“Another One Bites The Dust”

“Fat Bottomed Girls”

“Killer Queen”

You still hear the music when you missa note. The "strum" notes are retarded and not well implemented. The graphics and presentation are both sub par to rock band and it lags way worse than rock band ever does. You can only pick guitar or bass as instruments. The only thing I would think is better is the in game store and music selection.

As far as the comment goes about the reviews being better it seems a LOT of those good reviews are from Guitar Hero fanboys. Other reviews I have read state "this that and the other could be waaaay better but i LOVE GUITAR HERO!" The app is good for the $3 it costs but when comparing to the more expensive rock band app you get what you pay for. Check the video below for the gameplay.

Good to know about Guitar Hero ... I had a sneaking suspicion that it would be awful, as I really can't think of anything good that Activision has put out for the iPhone (ok so Tony Hawk, but it's a port ... and the zombies game is crap and Crash is just ok ... imo at least). Given the way Activision does business, I'm some how not surprised that this got a tremendous amount of face time during Apple's three ring circus yesterday but still manages to be a flaming piece of you know what.

Ooooh, I'm eligible for an iPhone 4 upgrade. I didn't think I was as my contract ends next July, but apparently when you are eligible is sooner then when your contract ends. I thought that worth noting as I sure didn't think I was eligible, even with the 6 months early deal. Of course... you have to wonder if next year we'll get other carriers, and if so, is the upgrade worth living with AT&T for another 2 years? the phone is awesome, though, and my experience with AT&T hasn't really been that bad. The biggest issue is that there's no coverage in my office, but there is coverage near my office. I'm wondering if the improved antenna in the iPhone 4 will get me a signal at my desk. Wish I could test it out first.

With my recent stretch into the Android market (Droid Eris myself), it seems the Sprint EVO is now the rightful holder of the smart-phone crown. That phones looks to be awesomeness incarnate. I'm wondering if the iPhone 4 can hold it's own against it

You sure you're not confusing the message which I'm also getting(my contract ends in February) which says for being a loyal customer you are eligible for a "discounted" upgrade at a higher price and a $18 upgrade charge? Which basically means if you want to upgrade your phone early you're going to have to pay much more than everyone else.

I did say I had to pay $18. You mean I'm not eligible for the $199/$299 price. If so, :( And why wouldn't AT&T want us to commit to another 2 years anyway?

EDIT:

Here is exactly what it says:

"As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-yr committment and an $18 upgrade fee."

It doesn't say discounted, but it also doesn't say I have to pay more. Hmm.

EDIT2:

OK, today I checked via their web page, and it says this:

"As a valued AT&T customer, we can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade with a new 2-year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee".

The previous one was from a text message, checking via the phone. I think it's pretty unclear. I guess we'll find out once pre-orders are available....

EDIT3:
Do you mind me asking, are you the main number on your line?
I'm the only number on my line, though I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. How can you have more then one phone on the same line? In any case, it is the only non-pre-paid phone we have. We do have a pre-paid AT&T cheapphone, but it's an entirely separate thing as far as I can tell.

I believe not. So that's a downside. So far I've topped out at 480 MB in the past 6 months, but with netflix streaming coming that could change. I'm sure it's highly compressed, though, so hopefully it's not too much of a bump in bandwidth.
