This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it reached 5,000+ posts making a new thread is easier to read through.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Apple iPhone & iPod Touch games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

App & Game Review Sites

Important Notes:

  1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iPod\iPhone. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
  2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
  3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
  4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
  5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
  6. Apps can be redownloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
  7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
  8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support site. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
  9. If you somehow break your iPhone or iPod Touch, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try these sites for do it yourself replacement parts & fixes.
iFixit Touch Repair Guide ; iFixit iPhone Repair Guide ; TechRestore
  10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks.

Oooh - wheel of fortune. Yes, I like the gameshow. In fact I only watch Jeopardy as a ruse - I really want to see Wheel of Fortune. ;^) For 99 cents, I'll take a chance on it and hope they fix the bugs.
Maybe he doesn't want a contract with AT&T ir any cell contract at all?

And people who mention the $99 3GS w/ 2 year AT&T contract as an 'affordable' iPhone option need to be shot in the face.
The pricing is close for any smartphone that does everything, the problem is that no smartphone is "affordable". No matter what kind of job I had I would feel like a total tool for paying cell phone companies the rates they charge here in the USA, its just ridiculously overpriced for a service that I can easily live without. I have internet at home and that is enough for me, sure I would like to have internet on the go, wouldn't everyone, but the rates they are charging not to mention limiting phones functions and doing ridiculous things like the with the droid x is just not worth paying for. Its just not worth an extra $2000 a year or over a 2 year contract for a phone with internet for me especially since I already have internet access at home. It would likely be more for me since I live in NY state which taxes the crap out of cell phone plans. On our measly $20 a month grandfathered plan from t-mobile that my mom mostly uses we already pay $10 a month in taxes, which is a lot already and I can only imagine the taxes and extra fees a smartphone would introduce on top of the already outrageous cost of the plans. They don't tell you what the taxes will be up front either each month you have to wait until you get the first bill to find out.

Hence why I am waiting for the ipod touch 4.. Sure I can easily live without this too, but I would like access to the app store.

I do not have a smart pho
ne due to pricing as well but the iPod touch fills it's place nicely. All the features of the iPhone without the monthly cost

Compass? Gyroscope? More connectivity options (WiFi AND cellular date)? Tethering? Facetime? :D

Considering the original iPhone was what, 600 bucks? And you had to have an iPhone only plan? $99 with the optional $15 data plan isn't that bad compared to what it could be. It all depends on how much you're going to use the phone for texting and minutes too.

Pretty strong words you're saying, eh padre?
Helsing's Fire or whatever is real nice. 4/4 from SlideToPlay, my favorite review site by far. They don't give many false positives. $1. Puzzle game. Drop your torch such that it casts light on every enemy you want to hit and then fire a potion of that color to zot everyone in that light. Make sure you're only lighting up things that match the color of the potion you are firing and aren't hitting any innocent humans. Fun, victorian camp with the modern sort of sarcasm ("Ah, the ever-present vampire bat." *SKREE* "Nobody is surprised at your presence, bat." *SKREE SKREE* "Well, I'm rather surprised we didn't see one sooner."). A couple of boss battles, a survival mode (That fails the first time you bomb a puzzle, rather than allowing you to work up extra moves/potions to cover a misfire, sadly.). Good music, too. I like.
Dude, the game is pretty good. Well worth 99 cents. Thanks for the recommendation.

My girlfriend just bought me an iPod Touch and I must say, some of these games are pretty sweet. I bought the All-In-One Gamebox and am very impressed.

Dude, if you're impressed by the All in One Game Box, you're going to be blown away by some of the other stuff you can find on the App store. You should check out a few of this board's perennial favorites like Plants vs. Zombies, Sword & Poker, Angry Birds, Words with Friends, Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor, Chaos Rings, and Carcassonne just to name a few ... there's a ton of great stuff but the App store kind of hides it.

This ^^^

Plants Vs Zombies is perhaps my favorite iPhone game thus far. It's a steal at 2.99 USD.

Red Rabbit -- In Snow is FREE (http://itunes.apple.com/app/red-rabbit-in-snow/id378796854?mt=8). That's about all I could make out from the description. . .

"The wolf loving a rabbit..
However, the rabbit didn't have interest in the wolf...

The irritated wolf shoots arrows with his mind..
And the rabbit responds them by snowballs..

Then, the wolf listens to a legend rabbit story from his neighbor - grandpa wolf, he gets confused.

One day, it is snow beautifully..
The rabbit and the wolf' s story begins now."

This isn't a game, but Big App Show is an app where you watch video "reviews" of various apps, including direct feed of the game. It's hosted by Adam Curry, formerly an MTV VJ and one of the first podcasters. After the 2-4 minute "appisode," you can click a link to go directly to that app's App Store page. Some are free, others aren't.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/big-app-show/id368656200?mt=8

It's a really good idea and is done really well. They only cover stuff they like, by the way, which means they're not technically reviews. They don't cover a ton of games yet, but they're expanding into that realm soon. I just had a call back audition today to do game-related hosting and recorded 4 segments that they're going to put up.

The deal was $85 for his iphone 3GS. I was gonna jailbreak+unlock and use Tmobile. Reason I dont want to get one from apple is that I dont want to be forced to pay for data plans at all.

My ISP provides me with "roaming" wifi or watever it is..basically its wifi but 3G like where you dont need a hotspot since they have these things set up around here that you can be anywhere and access online via that service. So Tmobile+ISP thing >>> AT&T contract.

Ill probably wait a while and get one near winter since I need to save some money for a few things I got coming up.

Blast Off
dropped to the perfect price of free!

994310.png

http://appshopper.com/games/blast-off

"Blast Off is an interstellar arcade game featuring gravity fields, lost astronauts and bizarre planetary systems.

Use your rocket ship to rescue astronauts and carry them through the warpgate to safety. "

A fun little physics puzzler from the creators of highly acclaimed Fruit Ninja. Not really sure how long this price drop will last, as it isn't mentioned any where on the description in itunes or on their website. Even at 99. cents I thought this game was worth it (and its actually like 5 bucks on XBLA, and 3 on psn), so I highly recommend everyone pick this up while its free.

Yeah I actually enjoy warblade as well. It looks like total shit, but the gameplay is actually pretty awesome. Its pretty much a straight rip off of galaga but upgrades and whatnot give it the legs galaga lacks.

Has anyone already mentioned that this three pack of awesomeness is coming?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zq9h3wf1a0&feature=player_embedded

Do Don Pachi is one of my favorite all time shmups. And I play and have played a lot of them so it takes something legendary to earn a spot amongst my faves. It wasn't too insane, the hit counter makes me feel like I'm rocking the game's face, the ship selection is strong, the music is that gritty industrial speed metal ish which is perfect, and it's just got this overall 90s Extreme Balls Plastered To The fucking Wall, feel to it. Just the way I like it.

I still have a 3G (so I'll only buy it to play later) so I'll probably have to miss out on playing for awhile but if Espaluga was any indication, this should be another solid port. I hope that this ends up on XBox Live one day too.

fuck lolis and dramatic stories. Give me DO DON PACHI!

Hey guys, I just ordered an ipod touch (32gb) from Amazon and was wondering if anyone knows some "must-have games" Im have about 15 bucks to spend on apps at the moment, until next friday.I saw HAWX for .99cents, anyone know if that is any good?

My personal favorites are
Plants vs zombies - 2.99
Super quick hook - 2.99
ninjatown trees of doom - 1.99
Space invaders infinity gene - 4.99
flight control - .99
minigore - .99
zen bound
peggle - 2.99
angry birds - .99
spider secret of bryce manor - 2.99

I personaly don't think canabalt is worth the 3 dollars if you are trying to game on a limited budget. You can play it on a computer with flash for free to see if you like it, but for 3 dollars you can find games with much more replay value.

www.canabalt.com

That youtube video loaded so fricken slow and was only in Japanese so I didn't bother with it, but any three-pack that includes Dodonpachi is aces in my book if it is even half as good as EspGaluda2 is.

Just to let you know how good EG2 was: That Iphone port made me STRONGLY consider dropping the $80 to import it, and I am morally opposed to paying over $30 for a shmup.

To the gent who wants suggestions, EG2 is great if you like the bullet hell shmups.

I love board and card games so get some Carcassonne and a lot of the Reiner Knizia ports.

Wish they'd bring us Lost Cities and not fucking Keltis. Doesn't even come close to the sheer rage LC gives you.

I worship at the altar of Angry Birds, as well as Flight Control, Pocket God, Tatomic, Zombie Smash, and the All-in-one Gamebox. Metal Gear Solid is pretty, uh, solid as well.

Zombiesmash is good. Never understood the appeal of Angry Birds, and I've owned it since before owning Angry Birds was cool. The aiming is still too imprecise for my tastes and it just isn't fun.

And the flash game of Doodle God was boring. What the fuck is the appeal of that?

Mental Blocks has dropped to FREE for the time being (http://itunes.apple.com/app/mental-blocks/id305462023?mt=8).

"The object of MENTAL BLOCKS is simple; score as many points as you can by clearing all of the colored blocks from the playing grid. In order to remove a block, a matching block of the same color must be along side it. Group as many blocks of the same color together for the best strategy to maximize your score!

Each layout is randomly generated, so you’ll be able to play an unlimited number of levels! Each time the grid is successfully cleared you’ll advance to the next level. As you progress to higher levels, more and more blocks of additional colors will be added."

Crush the Castle is pretty fun too if you like Angry Birds, plus it has an unlockable level editor, so you can set up your own levels and it's only .99

Who gives a sh*t about the original iPhone that WASN'T subsidized by AT&T and came out *3* years ago?

I was talking about people who are brain dead and say the 3GS is a cheaper option at $99 on contract compared to the $199 iPhone4 on contract.

They'd still be paying the same amount per month, but the phone wouldn't be as technically advanced, and will probably be blocked from certain apps down the line. Plus Apple has shown that the 3GS owners probably only have 1 year of the 'full' iOS experience. There is also the fact that a 3GS will be less desireable in terms of resale.

Telling someone to get the 3GS instead of the iPhone 4 is the definition of 'penny-wise, pound-foolish'

Free App a Day is featuring the TD stalwart Navy Patrol: Advanced Premium for its main new title (http://www.freeappaday.com/napp.php?id=261). FAAD is also showing the social networking utility iSocialize to enhance your FaceTwitEmailing experience (http://www.freeappaday.com/napp.php?id=260).

Great App has a physics-based puzzler called Levers for its free offering today (http://www.greatappaday.com/details/levers/).

The Mario-ish platformer Bob's Dream has dropped from .99 to FREE (http://itunes.apple.com/app/bobs-dream/id299139698?mt=8#).

For all you aspiring artists-on-the-go, Sketchy has dropped back down to FREE (http://itunes.apple.com/app/sketchy-for-iphone/id377460662?mt=8).

"Sketchy for iPhone is a unique and different way to sketch on the iPhone. With over 10 different brush types, you could create the next amazing work of art right from your iPhone. Choose a background and brush color and start painting! It’s that simple. Plus you can save your amazing work of art. Sketchy for the iPhone will allow users to create art in a way no one has before. You won’t believe the endless possibilities of paintings you can create!"

$99 is cheaper than $199. So, according to my bank account, the 3GS is cheaper than the iPhone 4. Your opinions behind which one someone should get are null and void if they are strictly looking for the cheaper option.

You need to relax first of all, saying people should be shot for an opinion about a cell phone. Second, it might be foolish to you, but that doesn't negate the fact that its cheaper, not everyone needs bleeding edge technology to run the newest high end apps. Considering the iPhone 4 has a significant known hardware issue, its really impossible to say what the resale value will be on them, especially after apple fixes said issue. The person who was asking about it had no intentions of purchasing a phone on contract any way, so the point is moot, regardless of how you feel about the value of the 3gs over the iphone 4.
