iPhone OS 3.0 & 3GS Disscussion

As a person who is about to defect from Verizon wireless should I go with the 99 dollar Iphone OR wait it out til I can get my hands on the new 3gs?

keep in mind the monthly cost is a little lower for the 3g, and that its probably a safe bet that a new model will be out next year too.

Well after browsing the huge thread on Macrumors I decided i'm gonna get the Incase Slider case that VIP suggested.

Anyones 3GS ship yet? Mine's still "in process". Best deal ever using Bing and getting $70 cashback considering I was ready to buy at $200.:D

You guys might laugh, but we got a e-mail on carrying the 3GS at Wal-Mart. Only problem is I don't know if that means we are getting it this Friday or later down the road?

I updated my touch so I could stop using a Bluetooth dongle to connect my Touch to the Moto T505 in the car. It worked perfect in my quick test.

Will touch get the tom tom stuff or is that iPhone only?

I may consider buying an iPod touch does indeed have support for tom tom. I have no interest in the iPhone.

that is iphone only, no gps in the touch

Unless there is some magical way for the touch to be connected to GPS that I'm not aware of having GPS on the touch would be pretty worthless unfortunately...

Sorry if this was stated earlier in the thread, but will most Apps not requiring a phone connection for the iPhone work on the iPod touch? Can I load up the computer software for the online store and learn which Apps work for both? I'm stuck in a phone plan so I can't get an iPhone yet, but wouldn't mind getting an iPod Touch.

How do you think regular GPS units work?
i should have known this would happen, but 3.0 doesnt live up to the hype. att isnt helping either.
What do you mean? 3.0 is a huge list of improvements.

Maybe I was mistaken, but I thought 3.0 removed the >10mb limit for apps over the air?

Or was this just for downloads with iTunes over the air?

Everything iTunes BUT apps can be downloaded OTA

:bomb:

Go to BestBuy!! With a 50.00 deposit they will hold
one for you. I just reserved a white 32gb, and I'm only the 2nd person to do so. Assuming they get atleast one box of white ones, I'll be set.
Damn the 3GS is fast. I knew it was the best improvement on the phone.

Really want now and will get one.

That's awesome can't wait to do side by sides with my 3G friends who now keep saying not much changed and how voice recognition is dumb. They are upgrade ineligible and don't wanna think about the power/speed upgrades. In comparison my first computer way back when was only 233mhz (or maybe 433 it's been forever), 128mb ram with a 4gb HD. Showing my age :D

My order still showing as in process, ship already! lol i'm impatient even if for some reason it doesn't show tomorrow i'll still have the Bing cashback and of course call AT&T and bitch trying to get some kinda credit.

nice... i still cant see it in myself to sign up for the 3gs knowing how att works and ill be pissed come next gen again.

I think ill try to get a cheap iphone 3g/touch if i have the oppurtunity... but main phone wise ill look elsewhere ( sooo many new phones coming out have me excited)

I'm so excited! I've never had an iPod or a cell phone before.

My status on AT&T has been "In Progress" all week long. Then last night it said the same thing, but there is a column that says "Qty. Back-ordered" that went from 0 to 1. I was pretty angry. But then about noon today it went back to 0. And about two hours ago I got a ship date (today) and a tracking number. It is being overnighted by FedEx and should be here Friday! :))))))

Note: I didn't get an e-mail notification. I have just been refreshing the Order Status page. So I wouldn't expect an e-mail necessarily when your order ships.

I think I'm going to end up taking the plunge. Thankfully, I've got a couple of friends who are studying abroad in Italy this summer, so I can have them pick up a factory unlocked 3GS for me (assuming anyone can just walk into a TIM and buy one).

My FedEx delivery estimate just changed to Monday. :(((((((

If a stupid Harry Potter book can be planned to be delivered in people's hands on a specific day, what is wrong with Apple??? Curse them for stopping the shipments on Wednesday. But others who had tracking that said Monday all along have started getting theirs this morning. I hope my tracking is wrong too.

If you were going to get it today it would say something along these lines: "Jun 19, 2009 8:19 AM - On FedEx vehicle for delivery"

If it's not showing on a truck already then you are not gonna get it today. Btw that's my info above and i'm sitting here goofin on the pc waiting for Fedex to arrive. I got excited when UPS woke me up at 10am but damn it was just a monoprice order for a friend.

Yeah. I was ready for a Monday delivery so I wouldn't be disappointed. But as late as 3am this morning the FedEx site was saying that it would be delivered by 3pm today. it wasn't until like 7:30 this morning that it changed to Monday. I hope FedEx is picking up twice today since they are doing the "guaranteed" iPhone deliveries. I know there are people on other forums who even talked to AT&T on the phone yesterday who were told that their phone was back-ordered but received them this morning. Our FedEx truck usually comes through about 2 hours from now (1pm). So I guess I'll see soon.

Got my phone about 10 minutes ago from Fedex. Activated it online real quick but phone says awaiting activation still and of course I have to leave now for work. Oh well hopefully it's on by break time.

And just a heads up signature is not required on these so be careful about not being home.

"Left at front door. Package delivered to recipient address - release authorized" shows on trace but the guy just handed it to me.

EDIT: by the time I got out of the shower and checked it was on and old phone had no service. Painless :D

So anyone else get themselves a new toy yesterday? Any launch day stories?

I didn't get to play with mine very much until last night and i'm very impressed after spending some time with it. It did allow me to make some fantasy baseball changes from work that my old phone wouldn't so it's already working on paying for itself! lol

Everything barely has load times and video streams great off the net just on the 3G network I haven't even tried to access wifi spots yet. Only games i've played are Rolando and Peggle they look great and run like on a pc. Mostly i've been playing with apps and setting stuff up and getting used to how everything works.

Happy AT&T newcomer till I get my first bill. :D
No, mine activated at BestBuy instantly.

How many times should I let the phone fully die to get the max battery life?
I thought with Li-Ion you were supposed to fully charge it and as long as it is in regular use, it was better to keep it charged as you go than to let it fully discharge. And when you expect not to use the battery for awhile you should discharge to about 40%. That is my understanding.

Either way, if you use an iPhone for anything but calls, expect to recharge in the middle of the day.
I've always been told to let them discharge but I could be wrong.
Yeah, with Ni-Cad.

Otherwise if you have Li-Ion, charge fully before turning on (likely at 40% charge already). Then whenever you are near your computer or in your car, feel free to plug it in. If it fully discharges once in awhile, it's not the end of the world. But don't leave it in that state and don't let it happen often.

This is what I have followed with my GBA SP, DSPhat, DSlite and all of my PS3 controllers and have noticed no degradation of usage time. I plan to continue doing it with my new PSPslim and iPhone 3G S.

If you're worried, read this:
http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm

and here is a quick summary of the do's and don'ts:
http://www.batteryuniversity.com/partone-21.htm

The only slightly dated info in there that I noticed is the part about taking your laptop battery out when on AC power. Most newer laptops seem to have the heat isolated to one portion of the computer. i.e. my Dell XPS laptop from '04 with a 3.4 GHz Pentium 4 and a mobility Radeon in it runs as loud as a 360 and the whole bottom gets so hot you don't want to use it on your lap unless you don't fancy having children in the future. But my Gateway from last fall that runs things 10X better has the heat isolated to the middle left edge of the laptop. The rest of the laptop isn't just room temp, it is cool to the touch. I just took my battery out and it doesn't even feel warm. So I don't bother with taking this battery out.

#-o last time I trust a BestBuy Mobile employee.

When you say before turning it on, charge fully, do you mean when I bought it yesterday?

Because yesterday I just started using it until it died then charged it last night :whistle2:|

Regardless, I have it plugged in now.

I wouldn't worry too much. I doubt many people care for their batteries properly and yet they still operate fine. It's just those are guidelines for optimum performance. But now you know for the future.

I am absolutely loving it. My 3G connection both over the phone and tethered is faster than my home internet connection according to speedtest.net

I thought tethering wasn't being supported yet?

He lives in Canada and it probably works there since they don't have AT&T.

Tethering will be an extra $55 a month for AT&T and I think that starts next month.

Yeah.... no.
I'll continue to use PDANet.
