Jak II - Does anyone else think it's bullshit?

I'm about halfway thru the game and I have to say that I'm very disappointed with Jak II. The vehicle missions are too difficult with Krimson Guard coming at you from all directions... it's like trying to drive around Vice City with a three-star wanted level... at least. Driving around the city is complete bullshit.. there's too many people on the streets, if you hit one, you're asking for trouble from the guards. And if you run into a car in the air, chances are you'll blow up and fucking die. Not only that, but the plot is really hard to follow since you're taking missions from like five different people and each one has really nothing to do with another.

My full rant about the driving and vsync issues is on the front page of my website, http://redgopher.com.

Was anyone else really disappointed by a good thing ruined?

Just bought this for 20....loved the first one (which I just got a week ago and finished 4 days ago). Was really hoping this game would be good. Haven't gotten to play Jak II yet, but now I keep hearing bad things.

This sucks...

Oh my god, I found a review that shares my disgust!! Thank you Gamespy!!

http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/launchreview.asp?reviewid=295048

Seriously, read this review. It is the most truthful review I have read... everyone else praises the game, while this guy seems to see past the flashy graphics and uncover the bullshit.

If you bought it already, keep it.. it is good for at least a while and will fill you in on the plot.. which is sparse, but good.

i thought you weren't supposed to visit CAG anymore due to the bet against your g/f and your friend? LOL... i guess you didn't place the bet huh?

btw, i'll buy it off of you if you don't like it ;) i've never played the game, but it got some really high rankings (gamespy being the only one who gave them a low score).

i too did not like the uneccessary difficulty navigating through an overly large city thats too bland to be distinguishable from one part to the next. getting from one mission to the next is way to frustrating for the game to be enjoyable. what made the first one so good was the simple charm of it.

J&D was had some of the best 3D platforming levels ever. It did have some really painful levels (like the hovercraft missions), but most of the game was really good.

That said, Jak II takes all the bad levels from J&D and makes a game out of it. They got rid of almost everything that made J&D good (namely all the platforming)

The graphics aren't even that good, there were a lot of framerate glitches. So I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks Jak II isn't very good.

personally, i liked it...though it did have some bullshit parts....i hated having to go from one end of the city to the other for every damn mission...and i hated the racing events....but i still beat it in like 3 days and overall enjoyed it

The original jak was much better than jak 2 in many ways. But jak 2 is necessarily a horrible game, its difficult in some aspects but most good games can be difficult in sometimes.

I enjoyed it . . . I thought people whined way too much about the driving in the city . . . it isn't that tough. It's like all the pissing and moaning about Ninja Gaiden being too tough. Suck it up folks.

Jak II is a bit on the snotty-kid side (in the cut-scenes) . . . but the graphics are really excellent, the control is tight, and the level design is pretty good.

That said, Ratchet and Clank blew it away.

Funny, the Gamespy review cited above was the lowest score out of 85 listed on Gamerankings.com.

A better review (IMHO) was published in Play magazine:

http://www.popcultureshock.com/reviews.php?id=2591

"But users beware; you’re going to have to work for it. The platforming and boarding maneuvers in Jak II get downright insane, and there are no skipping missions. No matter how hard, eventually you’ll be called upon to rise to any number of occasions. Forget what I said about Naughty Dog playing it safe and overdoing the focus testing; this is the old Dog circa Crash Bandicoot...spiked collar, slobbering, still thinking about that crappy apartment where they made Way of the Warrior. They made this one for gamers."

I agree.

I was greatly looking forward to this game after beating the first and was gravely disappointed. There are way too many places where the player must wait for a animation sequence to play out over and over if the level isn't completed. The lack of checkpoints made this so frustrating I just gave up.

THose who really liked the original Jak & Daxter should take a look at EA's 'Ty the Tasmanian Tiger.' This is a virtual clone of J&D with boomerangs but sufficiently different to be well worth playing. It's available on all 3 consoles and can be easily found for well under $20. Unfortunately it's looking like the sequel shown at E3 will continue the cloning tradition by replicating all the bad parts of Jak II

I liked this game a lot, and guess what, enjoyed the driving sequences. At first, I was thinking, "What the hell, you can't fucking drive this vehicle without it hitting another one", like the whiny bitches on this thread. Then I got better at driving, I could go around the city three times without hitting a single car. Yeah, see, you try to get better. You surprised? Bitches.

The game pissed me off big time because it takes FOREVER to get to your next mission because of the poorly designed city. Give me R+C or BG+E over this piece of trash any day of the week.

like i said....i only had trouble on the races and hated driving from one side of the town to the other (warp zones would've helped)....but i forgot to mention....i also had trouble on the part where you hop into that machine and have to shoot down the millions of flying robots coming from every direction....other than that....the game was great....i give it an 8.5 out of 10

I bought this game several months ago, but just recently got around to opening it. Like redgopher, I too was very disappointed. The driving/flying sequences ruined the game for me. It hit my trade pile shortly thereafter. I don't know how they can call this Jak II a sequel. It has nothing to do with the first game and the gameplay is so different. I'll rent Jak 3 before buying now.
where did you get jak 2 for $20? is it greatest hits already?
It was used @ BlockBuster...got this for 20 and True Crimes for 10 in the buy one get one 1/2 off...
Give me R+C or BG+E over this piece of trash any day of the week.
That is the correct response.
i also had trouble on the part where you hop into that machine and have to shoot down the millions of flying robots coming from every direction
I'm sorry to break it to you, but if you had trouble with that, you are not very good, and it gets worse from there. Good luck to you though.

im sorry, but didn't i mention that was one out of two of the only things i had trouble with? anyone ever tell you to eat a dick before? if not, let me be the first
i liked Jak 1 and 2. the second got really frustrating in parts, but it was still very fun.

quit bitching
Ditto.

I just finished the security bot and race-Erol-thru-the-city missions, and now I'm on this completely bullshit Titan suit mission. I mean, what the fuckin hell, Naughty Dog? I cannot dodge those god damn motherfucking cock sucking metal head dark eco energy bullet things in this stupid god damn unmaneuverable mech-ish suit! I'm going to go pound some nails through my dick.

From the Gamespy review:

"I expected to enjoy Jak II quite a bit, and I'm disappointed that I didn't. But time after time this game let me down, with an excruciating, pointless hub, me-too platforming, and just plain ugly aesthetics. It's like the first Jak & Daxter with the sunshine drained out and a whole bunch of half-baked extraneous crap stapled on. That's not to say that Jak II is unplayable dreck, because it's certainly playable. But is it good? Is it better than the original? I can't say that it is. Kudos, I guess, for trying something new; it's too bad the changes weren't for the better."

You know, you can get out of the suit, and shoot those guys, as they don't move at all. Press Triangle. Sorry if I got to you too late... your intended course of action doesn't sound enjoyable.

I agree that Jak 2 is kinda frustrating at times. More work than fun, with it supposed to be a platformer and all. It was pretty cool how the more you open up of the city, the less it looks like an urban wasteland and starts to resemble parts of Jak and Daxter. Still a really entertaining game, but R&C 2 had more of my attention though.

Ok yeah, finally got out of the fucking suit. Piece of crap. I gave up, looked on Gamefaqs, and lo and behold.. "you can get out of the suit and shoot the metal heads.."

I was kind of pissed. But at least I'm past that part now.

Since I'm almost finished with the game, I'm going to go ahead and give it a 9. It's good, but it is very frustrating, difficult at times, and everyone who doesn't have it yet should buy it if they can deal with the random spiking difficulty and some frustrations or just wait for the price to drop to $20.

edit: no more list cos im a hypocrite.

I personally liked the game quite a bit. More than J&D. It refuses to hold your hand and baby you through any level.
I could hear the developers as I played through some of the more challenging levels... "do it again bitch, this ain't no cakewalk, just cuz' I through you a squirrel like creature for comic relief doesn't mean this game isn't gonna pummel your atrophied platforming skills".
I agree with the review on GameOver, when all is said and done, the game is worth it, you do feel like you've accomplished something -which is more than most games can offer these days.

I can't wait for Jak 3. That "outlander" Mad Max angle they seem to be going with looks bad ass.
