Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

The EOV races remind me of FFXI/FFXIV. There's a hume, an elf, a mithra, and a tarutaru.

I guess the mithra is more similar to Fran and and Ritz' crew, but still.

Hope they don't take the bunny and dwarf out cause it's too sexual.

It's Atlus, they're less likely to give a shit.

Here's this weeks free PSN junk that was added a few hours ago below. I don't think it's fully updated yet, so I'll double-check later today and add anything if there's anything new. My reasoning for that is that the digital version of Witch & the Hundred Knight Revival Edition isn't out yet. Also found out it had a demo that I forgot to mention in this weeks weekly release post.

The thing that worries me the most about Nintendo changing so many things is what Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem will have to deal with :\

For a game that's design to be fanservicey, if they change it, it's definitely not going to sit well with people.

Ultimately, I can't see that game succeeding.

Not the first time Nintendo send a game to die like Fatal Frame V.

Is that confirmed? I don't see that kind of censorship in their non-Nintendo games.
Square Enix is the Localization Manager. The Localization Company chosen by Square Enix has to do what the manager tells them to do. While Nintendo could have a say, Square Enix has the final say.

If Nintendo was the cause of the censorship, why did Xenoblade Chronicles X have everything intact besides the boob slider and that one costume change? XCX had people dying and an alien laying eggs in water that people drink that use the body as a host, control them and just gross stuff all over

and a choking hazard.

I miss the days when you could buy a game and play through it without having any idea that anything had been removed at all.
or at the very least bck in the day it wasn't as obvious stuff missing like it is these days anyway. I found alisha debacle particularly hilarious especially the company itself back pedaling. They couldn't of made it more obvious that she was ment to be an original party member but was removed to charge

I want a studio to come out with a game called "Censor Girls" that lampoons this latest trend of rampant censorship by really pushing the envelope. Imagine Senran Kagura mixed with Hyperdimension Neptunia and some DOAX3 tossed in with insane amounts of customizable character options (boob sliders!), and go from there. We need a John Waters of the video game world and a studio that doesn't buckle under pressure about who will be offended.

Quick, someone call that guy making Yandere simulator! We have a general outline for a game.

Nah, he's been trying to bend over backwards to change YS to make it suitable for Twitch. Kind of embarrassing really.

I feel like Kenichiro Takaki is the closest we've got...He just wants to wrap the world in happy boobs and people like Alison Rapp think he's wrong.

Speaking of Alison Rapp,

Nintendo urged to FIRE feminist employee at centre of furious child pornography censorship row

Jamie Walton, president and co-founder of an anti-sex trafficking non-profit called The Wayne Foundation, also addressed a tweet to the firm's American branch and wrote: "Better fire Alison Rapp before Monday or there is going to be reckoning."

In her long essay, Rapp described people who possess child pornography as "simple possessors" or "mere possessors", even though this is a serious crime.

Her thesis jumps between discussing child pornography featuring "real children" and fictionalised depictions of sickening acts, meaning it often appears unclear what she is actually discussing.

White to black, so the US release of Persona could have a black dude.
Well I'm offended as a black person. Especially if the game in question took place in Japan, which it probably did.

I love Dragon Ball, but I make no excuses for Popo; that was racist as fuck. I do think it's laughable though, just because it's so audacious.

"Gross stuff" like what you mentioned in XCX tends not to get censored in the US anyway though. It is primarily things that are sexually related that do coming over from Japan.

If you really don't think Nintendo is the cause of the censorship in Bravely Second, why are none of Square's localized games on other platforms censored?

What was racist about the black persona dude? voice/dialogue? I don't get it just from the picture alone it seems fine...

Anybody order the Witch and the Hundred Knight Revival Edition CE from NISA? They haven't shipped mine out yet, which is odd. They're usually good about release dates, or at least sending out spam if somethings coming in late.

He is basically making the game for free, let him make some money via twitch or something. I guarantee there will be an "uncut"version at some point.

Not really sure what's going on at Nintendo anymore.

Is NISA even in business?

I want to cancel an order but their website doesn't have that function so I can't do it on my own.

I preordered Stranger of the City and Atelier Escha&Logy.

The order is stuck in processing.

The Atelier game was released in January.

I'm guessing NISA wants to save money and ship them together.

Stranger of the City is cheaper on Amazon/Best Buy with the 20% discount.

I want Atelier Escha&Logy but not that badly (especially when the other Atelier vita games are digital only)

NISA is not replying to emails. (2 emails, ~a month has passed).

I called them a few times but they're not picking up.

After a few minutes on hold, the call automatically goes to voicemail.

A voicemail was left a week ago but they haven't followed up.

After this fiaso, I'm done with the NISA online store.

Going theory I heard a while ago is that Treehouse gets paid based on how much work they actually do when localizing, so the more changes and edits the more they get paid. If they flatout change code, like removing something, or change a model they get paid even more. So changing a full conversation down to "..." gets them more than translating it, changing code to remove a boob slider gets them more than simply adding in text that says "chest size" and changing a sprite drastically gets them a lot of money. Goes in line with the current ways things seem to be going at least. Frankly, if true, its a crying shame and saddens me that XSeed, Aksys and Iffy couldn't do it instead.

I don't know exactly. It's funny how quickly the audience that Nintendo is trying to appeal to, turn against Alison Rapp, who's paper is basically saying thought policing is bad, and doesn't address the root of the issue.

Rather than think about it, the mob decided to try and get her fired, and pretty much silencing her.

Call NISA's support: (714) 540-1185

It's hard to get them to do shit by eMail, but they'll take care if it really quickly by phone.

Strange how neither source points out what exactly was removed beyond the already-discovered altered support conversation and petting minigame.
From what I've read, the B & A rank conversations are correct and even reference the C rank conversation, so this instance may actually be a case of an error rather than censorship.

As racist as Mr. Popo obviously is, nothing holds a candle to classic Disney's characterization of anyone who wasn't white.

I despise Disney, from their blatant hypocrisy to their ability to alter "fixed" copyright laws to their liking. There's a reason Walter Gibson used Disney as a template for several of the corrupt megacorporations in his cyberpunk novels.

Not to mention the questionable history surrounding Walt Disney himself. His original idea for EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow) was to design a "morally righteous" city for people to live in where they'd be monitored daily, to such an extent that it makes the world in Orwell's 1984 look like the portrait of freedom.
