Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

That game was amazing, especially for the time. Main reason I bought a Dreamcast. The PS2 had a great line-up of Gundam games as well. Spent countless hours on Federation vs. Zeon and Encounters in Space. Also, those Battle Assault PS1 games were exceptional 2D fighters.

Haven't been able to get into the new Gundam games as much as the older ones.
Yes, Encounters in Space FTW. I still throw that one into the PS2 every now and then. The same with Battle Assault 2.

Bestbuy.com said Fire Emblem Warriors would be delivered on release date when I preordered it a few weeks ago. They just shipped it today and it's a few states away.

0/10. Will NEVER preorder or buy anything from Best Buy again.

Until the next game I want comes out

yah mon, bought the bundle this mornin. gonna try PC Trails in the Sky on the big screen when it arrives.
Since it's not a Big Picture native game and has its own launcher, you'll have some slight issues initially figuring things out. It shouldn't be too bad, but I have heard that the game crashes if you try to use Borderless Window with Steam Link, so you'll need to make sure that checkbox isn't ticked in the launcher. Probably also run the DX9 beta build, though I'm not entirely sure how to do that through Steam Link itself.

Same thing happen to me with South Park Fat Butthole. (My FE:W CE is coming through Prime today)

Preordered weeks in advance, BB did not ship till monday.

Was supposed to arrive Wednesday, but got delayed in transit and didnt arrive till yesterday.

All my recent packages from BB are being delivered by Fedex now. Maybe that has something to do with it, probably partners for the holidays? (Just an assumption)

But if they pull this with Mario Odyssey next week, im gonna go bust a Cappy on their asses. :twoguns:

(Obligatory Cringy Joke :fridge: )

All my BestBuy preorders are still arriving on release date. It's been FedEx for years now.

I might be lucky and live near a warehouse.

I went in an exchanged my Senran Kagura Peach Beach Splash CE for a different one in better condition at Best Buy today.  It was pretty awesome haha.

Yeah, I just re-checked my order and it says its delayed. Won't be here until the 25th....

I'm pretty disappointed, was really looking forward to playing it today.

Gamestop guy asked me what kind of game is Bad Apple Wars and I had to lie that it is a RPG.
Just say it is a visual novel. What are you so embarrassed about? Hell if eroge was sold at BestBuy I would gladly buy all of it with my GCU discount. The store I pre-ordered it from had only I and one of the cashiers getting a copy. I play all types of VNs. I don't care what anyone thinks about me anymore. Heck one time I specifically asked the clerk at Best Buy where the heck Senran Kagura Peach Beach Splash was and she had to go in the back and get it for me, but I'm glad I got it.

BTW that new Megumi Kato figure....ugg I want it so badly. Hopefully my job stuff improves and I pre-order it sometime during the pre-order period.

Who thought it was a good idea to make a mech game some boring RTS. All the mech battles in the shows are fast paced action.. They even made the robots all chiby looking. i am disappointed.
Mech games can absolutely work as strategy games, also looks turn based rather than real time. As for the art, I’m not a fan myself but to each their own.

Haha wow that english voice over.

Well someone didn't play SRW or the Front Mission games.

If you want an action game, your best chance is probably the Another Century Episode games. Or you can play an armored core or gundam game. Or more recently there's Project Nimbus which came out on steam recently and is getting a ps4 release.

I don't think the gameplay looks too bad. Looks kinda like sakura wars. God I wish the older sakura wars games would get released on steam.

Got my FE CE in today as well through Prime Shipping (took the risk and lost).

My CE came in a bubble mailer through Usps. Ofcourse, it came dented and shreded at the corners and sides of the box.

Immediately contacted Amazon and their sending a replacement CE for free and i dont have to return the damaged one.

Didn't even have to fight for the replacement, CS rep offered it immediately after 5 minutes of chatting.

Im assuming many others complained before me.  Hoping everyone in here gets theirs in good condition.

Thankfully i have my Xenoblade 2 CE and all future preorders locked in at BB.

I'll counter don't watch Shounen anime period. Way too many episodes dragging out an already dragged on story.

It looks like Tengai Makyou Zero, a Famicom game, just received an English fan translation. I won't link to it, but it should be easy enough to find. I believe the game is pretty high on the Top 100 Famicom games from a Famitsu poll, so it might be worth checking out.

Is Gintama worth watching? It's 200 episodes. I don't tHink I can make that kind of commitment.
it's worth it, first couple episodes were weird as lot stuff was just thrown randomly at you but found out later it starts that way since it was first a manga that got popular enough for a anime, so it was a fan service thing for manga readers.

i stop watching around ep 158 not because i lost interests just too much of one thing tend burn me out. it still good in short burst of viewing, the nice thing is the shows 90% comedy and very random. most arcs are very short one episodes stand alone thu some can span 3-4 with a random mix of the show getting serious and also has sad episodes that are good too.

my favorite is the movie really good mix of action an story. it a future were gintama disappeared years ago an no one knew why the world also slowly dying from a unknown illness with no way to stop it. also even thu gintama is their trying find out why this world broken no one see him as who he is, they see a old Japanese man.

your not suppose to watch the movie till around ep 200 i think when that when the movie first aired, as lot the side character it shows will have no meaning an the show loses some impact.
