Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

ArcSys doesn't have the decency to add in all of Team RWBY into the base game and instead put half of them as DLC.
In a way, I find this even more offensive than the 20 DLC characters. You announce RWBY as part of a crossover series and fans can only play as 2 characters without giving them even more money?

Makes Arc look really bad.

Yeah, I was interested in this game but once I saw this I pulled the ripcord on it. Was never a super fan of Arc's dlc and iteration model to begin with but this is just taking it a bit too far. Seeing as they typically charge between 5.99 ~ 7.99 a character in their other games I cringe to think how much it would cost for the other 20 in this game.... along with color packs, voice overs, avatars ect. I'll wait this one out for a year for the BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle Extend II edition.

We'll get 6 RWBY characters in the next one. LOL Maybe even 5

Speaking of fighting games I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but the company Retro-Bit has teamed up with SEGA to re-release the Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast controllers (even including Bluetooth capability in some of the models):

Personally I don't care about the wireless ones, but if those USB Saturn pads are even close to the same build quality as those SLS ones from YEARS ago I will happily buy up two or three (the Saturn pad is still my favorite for 2D styled fighters).  And maybe a Dreamcast controller or two.  LOL

This is really cool. I have so many wired Dreamcast controllers already, but would love to have one through bluetooth since the cords are so damn short. I wish they'd make their own HDMI out box instead of VGA so I wouldn't have to go through third party.

It looks like console/handheld games are starting to ramp up again. The upcoming weeks should be pretty interesting as well. I'll just leave it at that since I didn't pre-write this weeks list, so I'm feeling rather lethargic.

I played some of the Tutorials atleast....really enjoyed it, secured my day 1 purchase.

I just hate theres like 3 games that I want to devote time to all coming out in the span of 1 week.....Monster Hunter is gonna be my main focus, then Dissidia NT because me and my friends are gonna have to work our asses off to get some of those harder trophies asap in Ranked, then DB:F on the sidelines

Yeah, that BlazBlue Cross Tab Battle DLC thing is pretty messed up, I'll likely wait for the game to be on sale instead of picking it up on day one.

I'm really enjoying Dragon Ball FighterZ from what I've played in the beta (even though it took me a billion tries to log in).

I liked it enough to have some of the girls on one of my tea mugs. It also helps the art style was great. The 2nd season is drama, drama, drama and a bit of drama as well.

Anyone enjoying Dragonball Fighterz Beta?
I got a few matches in and it's not bad. Definitely not a Day 1 purchase for me, but I'll pick it up when the price drops. The visuals are impressive, and I do like that it captures the anime look. Not really digging the combat all that much though.

I'll take Budokai Tenkaichi 3 or Raging Blast 2 over any of these newer DBZ games.

So when's the LWA game gonna be up for pre-order? I could have sworn the product page on Bandai Namco said Feb, but no stores have it up for preorder, not even Amazon or Best Buy.

I love it. This is the DBZ game that I’ve wanted for a while now. I’m not going to get into the price of dlc and what not, that is beating a dead horse on overpriced nonsense. But the actual gameplay is fantastic.

Oh, I love it and I’m straight trash. Seriously, raging dumpster fire. But it’s a blast even when I’m losing. So that’s saying something for me.

Dissidia on the other hand. Yeah....no thanks....😑

*Raises hand* - I for one thought the base game for FFXV was fantastic and I was planning on hitting the episodes during the summer lull. Is the DLC bad? I’ve only heard good things about the quality of it.

I've been waiting for the PC version, so the goofy assed release schedule hasn't bothered me for XV yet. They show no signs of slowing down, though. They're redoing sections of the game, adding new game mechanics, extra content throughout, at the end, etc. Like, who wants to play a freaking JRPG like that? If I had to sit down and list what I think is the worst possible way to experience a JRPG, everything about what they've done with XV would have to be it. I'll jump on it when they actually stop.

On the flip side, Dragon Quest XI, a complete game, looks beyond fantastic, and I want to play that straight away. It's funny to see the division between the DQ and FF teams over at ol' SE.

They get progressively better as you go. Gladio's was fine. Prompto's was better. Ignis was pretty damn good. I didn't get into the multiplayer content much. I thought it was too grindy relative to the content and if I am going to play a multiplayer FF, playing FFXIV is the better option (yes the MMO feels less grindy by comparison).

I understand, I doubt I’d spend much time with comerades. I have MHW coming for my grind. Good to know about the episodes, thanks.

Huh, I definitely can see why someone could truly hate this design choice. I guess I see the initial release as a full and fun game, improvements and additions are just bonuses for me. But I really can understand where you’re coming from and we both agree on DQXI looking fantastic. 👍

I am very seriously considering selling my current PS4 Pro, which is in perfect shape with no issues, to get the Monster Hunter Pro. What's wrong with me? But it's pretty!
Right there with ya. I have the two MH 3DS XLs, so I think I actually 'have' to get this, too, right? Haha

Free weekly PSN junk:

Layers of Fear

PS4

- The Gallery Theme

Innerspace

PS4

- The Art of Flight Theme

There weren't any thread related things, so I went ahead and listed those two for the hell of it. No specialized sales this week either it looks like. The Monster Hunter Beta will become available to preload tomorrow, the 17th. The beta lasts from the 18th (9PM EST / 6PM PST) to the 21st (9PM EST / 6PM PST) and includes a new, fourth hunt that has a higher difficulty than the rest. If you still have the previous beta downloaded, you do not need to re-download the client.
