Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Week 10 of the release bonanza or week 9 for Japanese niche only releases. As of writing this, Summon Night 6 hasn't been delayed yet. Otherwise it's basically that, the .hack remaster and Zwei II this week. The Final Fantasy XV multiplayer DLC was delayed I believe, so it's not being listed this week. Western wise, this week is Call of Duty. Though obviously everybody wants the new Bubsy.

Other stuff that released without warning last week (Assume PC unless otherwise noted):
- Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization Deluxe Edition (RPG)

Just Summon Knight 6 for me this week (already got it long paid off).  Too many other things I'm playing through right (Etrian Odyssey V, Culdcept Revolt) now to worry about anything else.

got alot of bouncing around myself, started dragon heroes 2 but got tired of the heavy grinding and slow interactions so switched to culdcept though beating the main story was tuff, the extra challenges are brutal so getting frustrated with that, hard to find enjoyable games these days looking forward to summon and hack but seeing recent playthrough on twitch was a little off putting seeing how VN heavy it is

I'll actually miss Miiverse just because I used to practice trying to draw with a tablet and being able to post the drawings in the Cruncyroll community and getting likes and comments always motivated me to want to do more. Tho I only ever did these in 2015 and never bothered to do more since then because drawing these would take 2 - 4 hours and worst part about drawing on Miiverse is you can't save progress so once you start drawing you can't stop. I always did consider going back to draw more and even get that Art Academy game so I could hopefully improve more in drawing with the tablet but sadly with Miiverse now closing down next month it seems pretty pointless to bother drawing again on the Wii U.

I beat Mario Odyssey yesterday since it arrived Thursday for me. It was a pretty fun game and the final sequence was quite enjoyable. However there is one thing I didn't like about it, which is how they went with the Stars this time around. Previous games they tended to have up to a rather small to fair amount of them per level. In this one they have a ton of them in every level. I'm not really keen on having to analyze every square meter of the game all the time. It feels less tailored for my experience with regards to Stars and more random and chaotic which isn't something I really want in a Mario game honestly. Granted you don't need all of them to unlock everything post-game and there is an alternative way to gain Stars to unlock the post-game content. I'm usually one who gets all the Stars in the Mario games, but there's no way in hell I'm bothering with that in this one. Unless I have nothing better to do and feeling masochistic or use a guide some ways down the road after I've unlocked everything else.

Also the final post-game area you unlock. Man, I hate that place. The lack of checkpoints really makes it annoying if you screw up and die. Made it 8 minutes past the second checkpoint or so and die by what I think is near the third checkpoint and I lose all the progress I made up until that point. I like the mechanics in it, but the lack of decent checkpoints in it makes it rather annoying. I ended up quitting for the day already, but I'll go back to it tomorrow before Zwei II to see if I can finish off that last area and maybe get the last 65 25 or so Stars I need to unlock everything in the shop.

EDIT: Also the game is really easy except for maybe the post-game content that does provide at least some challenge. Probably should have mentioned that since I was complaining about the final unlocked area.

Yeah, I'm playing through it now and I agree that they should have trimmed the number of moons. I read a review that put the number around
800
, which seems excessive. It feels like less of an achievement to get one when so many are scattered around and lessens the value of the hard to get ones. Still having fun though :)

Guess the moons are kind of like the korok seeds in BotW. :D I'll just find what I need to complete the post-game in Odyssey since there's no achievement to go for.

Yeah I was a bit concerned with how many moons there are. I haven't picked up the game yet though, planning on doing so soon, but hoping for the best

In other news I watched Frozen the other day and I thought it was... unexpectedly decent/kinda good lol

I should have the story of Odyssey completed tomorrow.

I don't mind that there is so many moons to collect. I do however hate that they are just there to collect, there is no real bonus for collecting more than what's required for the game. It would of been nice to have certain unlocks or something after so many collected. So it's like you can do this extra collecting but it's meaningless. So what that means for me is collecting until I get tired of that then onto Yakuza 0.

I also got Yakuza Kiwami as a birthday gift but that will be for a later date next year because I will be onto Xenoblade Chronicles 2 after Yakuza 0.

Well, I've got two Mario Odyssey games, and no NS to play em on, go figure? Long story...........but the short version involves Amazon & USPS, so that should make things clear. LOL

I did sell my sons NES Classic today along with some of his Wii U games, so I should be getting his NS within the next few weeks. So long as all the buyers pay for their items.

Saw this earlier, immediately knew it belonged here

Finally completed the last stage this morning. Man, there was one more bullshit area after the part where I died a couple times. It wouldn't have been so bad if I could have had a closer checkpoint since it takes so long to get back there.

That number is a little on the low side, but yeah, it's not far off.

Unlocks are as follows:

Bonus Areas are unlocked at:
250 & 500.
All shop items are unlocked by:
560.

Getting all [customspoiler=###]883[/customspoiler] Moons unlocks something, but no stage or shop items.
[customspoiler=###]999[/customspoiler] Moons unlocks something, but no stage or shop items.

I've already looked up the two final unlocks that I'm never going to get. They're not anything particularly worthwhile.

i havent gone that far yet, since theirs not many games worth playing besides first party, still waiting to go their, but learning the hard way with past purchases have bought some accessories in anticipation for when i do as some of those get hard to find especially as consoles change designs

Sucker Punch game sounds neat, Monster Hunter looks neat, Shadow of The Colossus remake still seems pointless, FFXV is whatever (sorry BRW).

Anyone own Exist Archive? Thoughts? Yes, I already checked the trophy guide lol, getting 100% on all dungeons seems to be the big one. At least u can do as many saves as u want to shorten replay time lol.

It has been dropping in the last few days, was gonna have Best Buy price match it so I can earn points too since Amazon sucks on the cashback portal front, only thing I've been using with Amazon is the JetBlue portal.

Was $10.25 when I was at work, now I'm home ready to have BBY PM it, it's only $10.08... think I'll order when it's under $10 lol.

:ps4: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ESA0W3C/ $10.08

:vita: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ESA0W96/ $7.33 PSTV Compatible! yay! (yea I'm aware of the hack lol)

Personally the sidescrolling dungeons and regularly going through doors on the depth plane didn't really click with me at all. I'm not sure how to explain it. It's like you're exploring an onion on a 2D plane as a sidescroller and regularly changing the depth of it you're on?

I didn't play much of it for this reason.

^ I didn't care too much for Exist Archive either personally. Got bored pretty quickly. I think the last straw for me was getting to a boss and not having the right character attack type in my party, so it was impossible to win. They eventually give you more types than can fit in your party at once. I'm not a big fan of those kinds of mechanics that require that outside of the standard tank/healer setup in other games, which can often be subverted through alternative means.

@TooPoor oh we fucked up.

^ Yep, mine shipped out yesterday and is out for delivery. I'll be playing Zwei later today though. Kinda wish I could have gotten the CE for its art book, but oh well.

*Gasp* The Queen of GS Flipping graces us with her presence.

Lol, I have nothing to add as I haven't played the game, just wanted to say that. But I do have the pre-order artbook/CD thing they gave out, and I took a few pictures here. The art seems pretty darn neat if that helps.

Free weekly PSN junk:

SNK Stuff

PS4

- ACA NEOGEO 1st Anniversary Theme

Not really seeing anything else this week really. This is the last week to grab October's PS+ games if you're subbed. November's games should be announced tomorrow. Sales wise is the Double Discount Sale that sucks if you don't have PS+. If you do though, I recommend Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition as it's really cheap. Not Japanese, but it's a turn-based strategy RPG in the more D&D style of games.

It's looking solid, I'm not knocking myself out with any of the clips so far. But for a game still at this point in development, there's room for improvements, no doubt. It gets better with each new video, so I can see their efforts, and that's all I can ask for really.

They better not cancel the Vita version, or I'm gonna be pissed. LOL I would probably just switch over the the NS if that ever happens, but I'll just have to wait and see for now.

I know there's a lot of JPN Niche CAG members here who live in New York like BlackRockWaifu and Motaku96, hope everyone of you and your families are safe from today's tragedy.

I can't justify buying the English version when I already have the physical version of DX & the controller coming later this month.
