Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Anyhow, do we have confirmation one way or another if the new Tales game is an exclusive? I'll play it on whatever, but PS4 would be my platform of choice.

I didn't hate Zesty, but it's by far the worst Tales title I've played. I still got the platinum because apparently I love to torture myself with arduous video game tasks. The entire game felt "just okay" except for the fuck ing equipment system. About half of the ~100 hour plat time was trying to find pieces of equipment that would synthesize together correctly.

it will be switch exclusive. may get a steam version too unless bamco has an exclusive deal with nintendo. It will definitely get a ps4 or higher port eventually since all tales of games do. Bamco cannot help doing enhanced ports. Granted the main jpn fanbase is on sony systems. I have to assume there is something they are getting out of this since they previously said they were sticking to sony systems going forward. Granted that was prior to firing hideo baba and the other management and such people.

At the very least it likely wont use xillias graphics engine so that is a plus. Hope it has either vesperias or graces art styles but with the newer larger character models.

My biggest question would be how they would implement controls since tales of needs a normal controller so I doubt it would work well portable wise. Hmm would they even still have mulitplayer? As I'm not sure that would work unless its locked out of portable mode. That and I forsee framerate issues especially if they still have link encounters with 8 enemies able to cast at the same time. Zesty couldn't even handle it on the pc/ps4 so I couldn't imagine the lag on the switch in portable mode.

My Kiwami 2 LE arrived and the PS4 theme that comes with it is simply beautiful.

Well, the official twitter feed specifically said "not that one" for the ps3 version of Vesperia. Hoping it's PS4 and Switch version of Vesperia instead!

That Shinobi Strikers gameplay....does not look very good.
Thought that was a Naruto Falling into an Abyss Simulator for a second lol.

Seriously though, it does look bad.

The mechanics look like they'll just cause nothing but a headache when moves dont connect and woops you fell down into a giant abyss again.

Tried the beta for a couple matches. It's as bad as it looks. Matchmaking was also terrible, server stress test aside.

Unless certain gameplay elements and ^that undergoes a significant overhaul, I would advise everyone to stay away.

I know it's technically not Japanese, but I finished Cosmic Star Heroine earlier today. What a game. It has the great Zeboyd Games sense of humor (Breath of Death VII, Cthulu Saves the World), solid mechanics, and some really fun post-game bosses. The stylized art and soundtrack were great as well, and those tend to be things I normally don't notice or comment on. It added a lot of "quality of life" features to the 16-bit RPG formula that I was very happy to see - experience is auto-distributed to all characters, dead characters still earn experience, ability to save anywhere, enemies don't arbitrarily respawn (but you can re-fight them through the pause menu), etc. It's a bit saddening to know that it didn't sell well when it's blatantly obvious how much care and polish went into the game.

A few weeks(?) ago we were talking about our favorite games of 2017, CSH definitely cracked the list for me. If you have niche enough interest to be reading this thread, I'd recommend it to you.

From all the way back in feb. When they first announced a switch tales of game. Only article I could find after a quick google search was from may though. http://nintendoeverything.com/bandai-namco-reconfirms-its-switch-games-seemingly-planned-for-coming-fiscal-year/

If it was a port it would have been named and dated for this year or at least q1 next year. Considering they don't even have a trademark at this point it brings up 2 possibilities. The first is that it's reusing a trademark they made before like how zestiria did. Or its a sequel/prequel and will reuse the name of an existing mothership title.

2nd which I think is the most likely outcome after the deadline and anniversary passing is that the game is still very early in and won't be out til 2019 at the earliest. Odds are at this point we may not hear anything at the next years tales of festival in june.

That's what I find odd, they've had 2 tales event and no new game has been announced regardless of console.

Pretty much nothing releasing this week unless you're into Sekai Project PC VNs. Hopefully in the 'revised' Switch port of Of Mice and Sand, they'll have fixed the terrible tutorial. Game is decent, but doesn't direct you all that great, especially since you can't look up past tutorial windows you may have accidentally clicked through.

Other stuff that released without warning last week (Assume PC unless otherwise noted):

Happy birthday Vita! As my most played console until now, I think I have new release + backlog to take me another three or four years.

Long live the Vita!

Ironically, my Vita died last week. Ordered a replacement from Play-Asia, but they are taking their sweet time to ship it.

I haven't played much of my Vita, but on average, each time I've played it I've had amazing experiences. The ratio of, Time Spent:Fun Had, is probably the highest for any game system I've had. Also houses my favorite rhythm game of all time, IA/VT Colorful!

Draekon you forgot December 22nd for Imouto Paradise 2 only on Mangagamer.com (18+).

Link

It's my Christmas present to myself along with Hoshizora and likely the other Sekai Project game as well.

I don't visit Mangagamer or other 18+ sites to add titles to the list for the sake of adding titles. I pretty much stick to Steam on PC. I'd do GOG too and then differentiate between the two, but their 'upcoming titles' list is pretty terrible for it and they rarely get any of the thread related games Steam gets.

I do go a little out of my way to check if a title has an 18+ patch if they're from certain publishers. Also I don't really dig that deep for it because if I can't find it relatively quickly, chances are there's no information on it or I'd have to spend way too much time on it. I don't really want to add more time than I already spend compiling the weekly list as it takes too long as it is and I've been doing it since they added in PSN Communities.
