Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

Now that the MHW betas are probably over for good, my kills aside from the four quest monsters include Kulu-Ya-Ku and Jyuratodos. Also fought a Rathalos and a Pukei-Pukei (ran out of time on the former and lost track of the latter).
 
Didn't realize how much I've missed playing Monster Hunter until I randomly matched up with a solid party and we beat Nergiante with less then 30 seconds to spare.  I channeled my inner GUTS and was able to get a lot of good hits on it with the Great Sword. Party rolled with dual blades, long sword, and the bow.

So what's the deal with the Shadow of the Colossus Special Edition? Did I just miss the pre-order window since I'm slow?

Everywhere I look has it unavailable, which is pretty confusing. 

 
Wow.....got my Digimon Cybersleuth Hacker's Memory from Amazon and basically half of the entire top casing (Right around where the spine starts) is totally broken. Like pieces were scattered inside of the case when I opened it (It was so damaged the plastic wrapping was basically halfway off before I even touched it). If it were just the case I wouldn't be as mad, but the artwork is ripped a good inch or two down as well.

Never had a game come this damage in the mail before. Time to deal with some Amazon customer service bs.

EDIT: Yup, either refund or ship it out and wait for a replacement to come later. I just took the refund lol, got the pre-order code so I'll just get a copy down the line when the price falls.

I remember in Grad school one of my research-mates was so into Cowboy Bebop. It just didn't resonate with me then and I haven't given it another shot since (15+ years now). But Kingdom Hearts 1 is one of my top 5-10 all-time favorite games (even though KH2 is "better", I like KH1 more).

Overwatch news again for those interested.

As you probably already figured out but today the Blizzard World Map (Hybrid) released along side a cosmetics update which added more skins/sprays/emotes/highlights to the base game. You can find (most of? all of?) them here. There may be some balance changes with this patch, but nothing significant from what I've read if it happens. The more significant changes, such as Mercy and Junkrat will go live in the near future.

Also the Lunar New Year 2018 event I'm going to guess will go live in three weeks from now as it's the Tuesday prior to the Lunar New Year. Like usual, I expect it to last three weeks.

Doh. Just bought Demon Gaze II on PS4 and Vita to discover there is no cross-save. I should have checked, but it is still annoying.

Well, I went ahead and created an event in the thread community for some Monster Hunter World multiplayer. What happens, happens. Non-thread regulars are allowed to join as well of course. Just go ahead and sign up to the event in the community if you're wanting to participate.

Anyways, I set the time as Saturday (1/27) at 5:30 PM PST / 8:30 PM EST. If it doesn't work for you, then feel free to propose a different time. I'd like to give people a couple days prior to an event at bare minimum, so the tomorrow is the last day I will make changes to the time/date. Normally I'd like to do a week in advance, but the longer I stall, the less likely something will happen from my end.

If you plan on taking part, please at the very least create your character before hand since it's one day after release. Some people take way too long to do that sort of thing, which causes issues for everybody else.

...Now I just need to ensure I don't accidentally fall asleep and miss the event entirely. Shouldn't be an issue since my friend and I will likely be playing it after he gets home from work.

The two Atlus PS4 Utawarerumono titles dropped in price to $29.99 ($23.99 GCU) at Best Buy last night.  It appears the Vita versions are still $39.99 though.

However, the Vita versions of these titles fell to $19.99 at Gamestop recently (possibly last night, not sure the exact date they fell at GS).

Also, Persona 3 (PS3 version) fell in price to $29.99 at Best Buy and Gamestop (which means it is $23.99 after GCU at BB).

Anyone playing Lost Sphear? I enjoyed I Am Setsuna but the $50 price tag for LS plus the fact it comes out the same week as MHW made me hesitate.

I barely play the games I buy now. So, I had to make a concession this week. I chose DBF and MHW, dropped Lost Sphere.

Once again, I'm going to highly recommend these Visual Novel games. So long as you can tolerate the slice of life type of moments and don't mind the story not doing too much for a bit in the first game. It's very well written with a lot of good characters that develop really well through the two games. Plus it's one of the better translations I've seen in a game outside of a few minor issues in Deception. The only other downside is that the second games final boss takes a very long time. Though I think you can save once or twice during all the shit going on.

I still do recommend watching the original Utawarerumono anime from 2005'ish prior to playing (Not the more recent one). It covers the entirety of the first non-translated game. While the Deception isn't a truly direct sequel to the original, the second game, Truth, will touch a lot on the events of the first Utawarerumono game we never got.

Some idiot may have played the demo on PC and pre-ordered the game. Not mentioning names. I somewhat liked what I played of the demo. It somewhat reminded me of the beginning of FF6. It's a very small picture of everything. I'll see what RPG I play next though. All I know is Fata Morgana is next for VN for me, and likely Overwatch event soon-ish.

It's not that I felt like it was a bad game, far from it. I'm interested in it but I just don't want to spend $50 on it. I thought I saw a PC preorder for $35 which would be a lot more palatable.

I just got my copy in today. I wasn't super impressed with the demo, but honestly, with a lot of turn based/ slower RPGs, I'm not usually that awed by the demo. And I love ATB style combat so I was willing to grab a copy right away. Buuut, I highly doubt I'll be playing it any time soon. I might be jumping into MHW soon if my friends are actually grabbing it.

So apparently if you can find a Walmart that sells physical download cards, you can buy one and start playing Monster Hunter World today. I saw someone post it on Resetera, and did it myself and it works.

Now I'll just sell the copy out of my CE (Or just return the whole damn thing, because I kinda got buyers remorse)

I tried the demo for a bit but it's really hard to digest things when I'm put into what seemed like it was the middle of the game so I only played a battle or two before stopping.

You'll love it. Such an incredible experience.

Speaking of Nier, I finished the PS3 version the other night with all the endings. I have such a weird love/hate relationship with it now that it's over. It certainly gave the world I experienced in Automata a fresh perspective, but there's just more questions than there are answers. Not to mention that a lot of the storylines and even the final ending make little to no sense to me with regards to the decisions you make as a player. I liked the tonal shift in NG+ with the new context for your actions, but it's still a little uneven storywise.

I guess I need to look to all the stage plays and canonical short stories to fill in the gaps of Automata. I've tried watching those Nier and Drakengard analysis videos by clemps for more lore bits but I find him completely insufferable.

I did love all the homages to other games there. (Zelda, Resident Evil, Baldur's Gate, text adventures)

 
I'm familiar with Gust Japanese dubs since things like Blue Reflection and Nights of Azure haven't had one. It just kinda seems like an odd point to stop.
