Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Yeah that sale looks awesome to me. Several thinks that were already bookmarked on my wishlist. I'm picking up:
  1. Moero Crystal H
  2. Seven Pirates H
  3. Chrono Cross - The Radical Dreamers edition (FINALLY)
seriously go look at videos for those first two. I'm surprised people never talk about them on here. 🤐

There's PS5 FF7 Remake Intergrade (dlc code won't work) and PS5 Crisis Core too, if you're looking to match some stuff.

People are not into dungeon crawlers much. Course the fun ecchi elements of those and cute monster and other girls means I already own them.

I'm eyeing the Yohane games myself (the Metroidvania one and a deck building one that hasn't come out) and maybe a pre-order of something else. Also a few Play-Asia exclusives I don't own. I also don't own the Yuri Oshi no Love. Decent stuff for sure.

They also have Tokyo Xanadu EX+ in there. While it doesn't say english on it, reading posts about the switch version on gamefaqs forums seems to suggest it does have english subs.

IF interested, maybe dig further into making sure. I'm fairly positive I still have the Vita version.

Looks like it is finally getting a US Switch release.

I still say it's a bit overrated of a sale. Some of the games on sale I know have been cheaper on the site and had their prices increased. A lot of the bigger ticket games also lack the "more desired" platform because its either sold out or not added to the sale. Most of the games on my wish list are not in the sale.

Some of those are also touch and go. Xuan-Yuan Sword Mists... over on Steam/most reviews say the translation is awful and the text is hard to read, so I'd we wary of that on the Switch even more. Chrono Cross remake needs a patch to make it perform as intended, making a physical copy kinda moot. Minstrel Saga is a dog on Switch. So on, so forth.

I see it as a "clearing out inventory" sale. Just make sure you're not paying more than prices elsewhere or used, 'cause a lot of those are above what I've paid for them.

I instead bought some stuff on Amazon like Silent Hope, Disgaea 7, Fate/Samurai Revenant, and CRYMACHINA. Good prices on those right now, since NIS and K/T are pretty touch and go if they hit below $40 and are available.

Man, I’m only 34 pages out of 100 into this list. I do see maybe a few possibilities, since there’s some older stuff sprinkled in.

Here's the way to do it faster:

Filter games by languages you can understand. English drops it down to 26 pages for me.

Then price... I set it above $35, as anything below and you're not really saving any money. Now it's 20 pages.

My systems (PS, Switch) drops it down to 19.

Pre-orders are just 2 pages and I'm fairly up to date on those in general. Therefore, available drops it down to 17 pages.

Pretty easy to get through 17 pages.

Edit: If I remove ESRB titles from the list, it gets down to 14 pages. PA rarely has the best price on ESRB games.

Fan disks and VNs look good to me from Aksys announcements. Still need to play Radiant Tale and the Evermore game I haven't bought the original yet.

I can read Japanese, so that first one is a bust. The only systems I’m not looking for are Switch and PS5 (and anything Xbox, but that’s rare enough not to be worth it), and I’m open to grabbing LEs from systems I don’t own at these prices.

Speaking of stuff on sale on Woot, is Digimon Survive worth $7?

With no previous digimon knowledge/experience, I played the first 5-10 hours on nsw. Found it mostly boring. Didn't finish. Tactical gameplay was very blah. Plot might be decent at some later point but overall struck me as the most generic schoolhouse mystery ever. At $7, still possibly worth it for existing digimon fans.

If you are not a VN fan then no. You have to play through it twice to get a good ending.
Agreed that unless you like bloated visual novel titles it's definitely not for you. Very basic gameplay. The sucky part like mentioned requiring multiple playthroughs is just so dumb.

There's the other negative things like certain characters are fixed temps in your first playthrough, route choices determine evolution options so you can end up handicapping your agumon.

However it's definitely not that generic. And with a proper budget the death scenes would have been glorious.

That's some amazing timing to release that info. I guess I can hold out on making any decision on that one.

There are a few games I would buy with other languages, so I didn't want to do that. Plus there are some games that have english which is not noted anywhere on the page. Like Tokyo Xanadu eX+ (if what I read elsewhere was correct).

But I did end up stopping the 100 page dive and narrowed to in remove out of stock and then went to smaller platforms one by one to see what they had (3DS, DS, N64, Vita, PSP, Wii-U, Xbox) which cut a little out and then opted to just look at switch and then cut out the preorders. It still ended up 21 pages, but not too bad. I didn't do any price restrictions because the cheapest game (at least on switch) that was there was over $33.33 (I think)... and in the case of having two games higher priced, it still might be worth it to pad an order with something cheaper for less overall savings, but still at least it would have some.

Picked up one set from PA, including :switch: Ghost Trick (now that the pc version was forcefully updated with drm) and :ps4: LAD: The Man Who Erased His Name. I guess I'm going to add an asia region account to my ps5 just to do the free ps5 upgrade from the ps4 disc. I was happy to see that adding a 5% code and using a few $ of PA loyalty coins didn't negate free shipping.

Are there any other currently operative 5% codes aside from WARIO2024?

Play Asia doesn’t do pre-owned games, right? Even if I order a really old game here, it’s still gonna be in original shrink wrap?

Sorry to doublepost, but I’m trying to check out and Play Asia’s trying to charge me $24 shipping. The deal says it’s $100 + free shipping, right? What am I missing?

They have some items that are not free shipping eligible. I would check that first. I've seen it in the past on figures and such. To your other question: I've seen some older games on PA get seperate pages & descriptions for dinged up condition.

I'm having a problem of my own with Play Asia if anyone knows a workaround. Every time I try to finalize a paypal payment I'm getting a completely empty page that doesn't load at https://www.play-asia.com/checkout-confirmation/
Already tried different browsers with the same result.

Edit: I received an mass email from PA apologizing for technical issues regarding the bundle promo. So I assume the site is having issues and it's not just me.

Did the NA release for Apollo Justice AA Trilogy come out? I think it was set to release in Jan but I can't tell. VGP still hasn't shipped my order... but shows as being available.

Checking the individual item pages, yes, one of my three doesn’t say it offers free shipping for over $99.99, but the shipping quote for that item alone is $16.90, so I still don’t understand where the $24 figure is coming from.

You're being charged shipping for the other two items as well because you're not hitting the threshold of 100+ of FS eligible items.

Not too bad of a deal at PA if you consider the free shipping compared to Amazon Japan.
Haven't gone through much of the list, but right now I'm considering the Cotton Saturn Tribute, Like a Dragon Gaiden & Macross Shooting Insight

Ys: The Oath in Felghana getting a PS4/5 version
It will be interesting to see what gets worked out concerning NA publishing since the extant work is an xseed title. For me, this looks to potentially be a great steam deck title while I keep my PSP LE sealed. I wonder if PH3 is working on the technical side of the remaster as they did with nayuta.

Well shit... really hope it ships then, it's bundled with my Man WIth No Name PS5 Asian Eng copy (which is sold out).

I contacted VGP about this and they told me that they there's a delay because Man With No Name is out of stock so now they won't ship until that's back in stock... wow, thanks for taking my money as soon as I order but not shipping when you're supposed to.

Nukitashi 2 is coming out February 16th from Shiravune. Steam will have a version, and it will need a patch as this game will need it. Nukitashi was my VN of the year last year in the uniqueness, art, characters and all. Subverted my expectations and I expect this one to be good too. Both this and Irotoridori No Sekai coming out the same day will make my Valentines-ish celebration very good. I will post on release the 18+ patches for both and remind people as they get discounts on release and pre-ordered from some places like JAST USA.

I desperately want them to localize the Oath in Felghana remake. I absolutely loved the original on PSP (played it on my Vita) and having a modern version of it on a modern console would be wonderful. I know the rights issues are really complicated, but XSEED did release the Memories of Celceta PS4 remake after NISA got the rights to Falcom's games, so I like to think it's still possible. Just like I like to think that a Trails Sky trilogy Switch port could happen, and be localized lol

So the eShop has the Persona 5 Tactica DLC on sale right now until the 8th, and since I got the game for $20, I thought I could pick up its story DLC (my love for Robbie Daymond's Akechi knows no bounds). However, I figured I should play it first to make sure I like the game enough to buy more of it. So, instead of finally getting to Pikmin 4, Xenoblade 3 NG+, and the newly-released Granblue Fantasy Relink, I guess I'll be playing P5T. Never thought I'd prioritize a game I previously had no interest in over those three, but here we are. Backlogs love to just reorganize themselves last minute.

Is anyone else play Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth? I am currently in chapter 13. I do feel there is too much Kiryu in the game. I thought we passed the torch to Ichiban. And a certain character was completely shafted by showing up so late in the game.

According to IGN Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition will only have a physical release in Europe. Also, Tokyo Xanadu eX+ Switch is up for preorder at amazon. There is also an online exclusive edition that includes a 4 CD soundtrack at the Aksys Games store.
Now we have to see if RE4 Gold will be on disc or a download code for the extras/Separate Ways. May be Capcom reverses course after RE7 Village Gold. They did put it all on disc for RE6 Gold.

Really glad I waited to get the game. Whether this is forever a separate DLC add-on or the whole game is rereleased in a complete version that includes all DLC on disc, I really don't want to play until I can play the whole experience. I'd be willing to pre-order a complete edition if that's ever released, but knowing this, the only way I'd get Reload before the DLC comes out is if I can get it for dirt cheap. And regarding FeMC, I can accept her never being apart of this supposed "definitive edition" of Persona 3. We'll always have Portable for her story.

JFC you gotta be kidding me.

Atlus, when did you go so wrong.

well, WE ALL know for sure now that the SE is going to approach ~$20 again. Good going, Atlus. Now half of people aren't going to to buy your stuff anymore.

We all figured this was going to be the case; but that's because we are smart, we are 40ish, and we've been around the block.

Companies that continue to punish their early supporters like this are such idiots. You teach people to not buy your software. Unless the DLC is free of course, which I sincerely doubt. Another example of some idiot company thinking that they are going to put one over on the core gamer, and like we don't have online discussions or something.

For me this is fairly positive news because I'm looking forward to revisiting that content for the first time since playing FES on ps2. It will get another release. Game pass is probably the best option for people unwilling to wait. Especially since the CE was overpriced with no steelbook and an underwhelming aigis figure.

So I finished work a bit early and needed a break... figured I had 20 minutes to enjoy some gaming for the first time in 3 weeks. I fired up the GranBlue Fantasy Relink demo and man, I gotta say, I had fun. I got a decent bit of Tales and Skies of Arcadia vibes from it.

But, playing that demo made me realize that, in this day and age of accessibility and all kinds of options settings, there should be an option to have some characters just shut the fuck up (that stupid little dragon).

While I somewhat agree with you on the Tales + Skies of Arcadia vibes from the demo, I looked a little more into how the gameplay loop unfolds in the full game and it's more akin to a Monster Hunter setup where the main story is kind of short and ends with a "now your journey truly begins" kind of sensation as you now take on quests from a hub, journey out to do a task, then come back and do it all over again.

I was hoping for a more traditional action-JRPG approach, so I don't think Re:link is for me.

I think my review of the demo putting it more akin to Toukiden and Genshin Impact was correct. It's not for me either as the Monster Hunter and its kin games are never for me, although I did play a whole lot of Toukiden on the Vita. I will play the game when it's like $15 for it new or something though. By that point a short main campaign will be just fine for me. I'm very tempted to start up my Gamepass sub again and play through Sea of Stars and Persona 3 Reload. No way in heck I'm paying the high prices for Persona 3 Reload.

Also for the more traditional action-JRPG approach you have the FF7 part 2 at the end of the month.

Yeah like bamco who used to spam enhanced versions just like disgaea and atelier. It completely devalued tales games to the point that sales went from average of 500k-700k plus to 200k.

Gonna assume you're right as I haven't played either, but was just saying I think I liked the Tales/Skies vibes from it. I try to avoid saying games are influenced or like some other game but I finish like 5 games a year these days.

Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition is getting a physical release in Asia (PS5) and Japan (PS4/PS5), of course it will be censored though. It releases on Feb 09, it was just announced and it's already releasing this week. I read somewhere that it's just the vanilla disc with a DLC code. European physical is supposed to come out in March.

Please share how you feel about p5t once you have a few hours in. Debating whether to start that or granblue next.
Ok, I've got about 6 hours in and here are my thoughts: it's fine. Story? Fine. Gameplay? Fine. Music? Fine. Presentation? Fine. It's not a bad game by any means, but it's very much a budget title. I'm not expecting it to hit the same story and gameplay highs Strikers did, though I find myself comparing the two games. Toshiro, this game's "regular adult" character, isn't nearly as interesting or entertaining as Zenkichi, and Marie's kingdom isn't as visually compelling as the first Jail. Erina, leader of the Rebel Corps, is a cool character, and I have some theories about her and the story, so I feel driven to keep playing so I can see if I've figured anything out.

Gameplay is very much "baby's first XCOM," even more so than Mario + Rabbids, but I'm fine with that since I'm not a huge fan of XCOM-style games. As others have said online, it's not all that difficult, but missions have optional objectives like "finish in x turns" or "don't let any units get KO'd," so I just treat those as requirements to increase the difficulty. The game allows you to retry a mission and even undo your last turn, so it's very forgiving. I think if you're an XCOM veteran, you'll fall asleep playing this, but if you're like me and don't have a lot of experience in XCOM-style games, you'll like it fine.

The music is just kind of there, not bad but not memorable, which is a shame because Strikers had such an incredible soundtrack (legit even better than the original Persona 5's OST), so I was hoping Tactica would follow suit. There's a Lyn song that plays sometimes (I'm not sure what dictates which missions get the Lyn song and which get the regular battle theme, it seems random) and I found myself bopping to it a bit, but the rest of the soundtrack is like P5 ambiance.

Finally, my biggest complaint is the art style and character designs. I didn't like what I saw in all the previews, and now that I'm playing it, I still don't like it. These aren't cute, appealing chibis like in the Q games. The characters look like they're in a weird Sunday newspaper comic style, like a cross between Peanuts and Doonesbury. The way Joker stands with his head tilted forward, it's like he's got a bad case of tech neck. It's not ruining my experience or anything, but it's just very unappealing to me. Thankfully, all the original P5 voice actors are back and they're doing a great job, despite only like half the scenes actually being voiced.

So, if I had to review it right this second, I think I'd give it a 7/10, though it just barely reaches that. I've heard the Repaint Your Heart DLC has better gameplay, though I'm still a little undecided on it. It's on sale until the 8th, so I still have time. It's recommended you play it after the main story, anyway. If you're caught between this and Granblue, I'm thinking Granblue is your best bet. I kind of regret starting this first, with all the praise Granblue is getting. At least P5T doesn't seem like a long game, so might as well bang it out so I can get to the games I was going to play lol
