Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Some visual novel releases and recent announcements.

First of all JAST USA released Yamizome Liberator and it has a release discount for about 16 more hours. This is similar to Yamizome Revenger. There is an 18+ patch for Steam, and you probably want it for this game.

Nekonyan released Hatsuyuki Sakura . It has a discount for about another week. There is an 18+ patch for the Steam version. I've played a few hours and gone through the prologue. Honestly the main character is probably one of the worst I've seen in a while. Just a jerk to everyone and lots of unlikable characteristics. The story is more interesting than the usual games with this art style. Don't go for this one for the romance, although it's there for sure. Just a weird game so far that I wouldn't recommend, but I need to finish a few routes first.

Shiravune has new releases including The Restless Sheep & The Lone Wolf -A Tale of Cutthroat Lovers- and the Gaiden for it as well. These both have 18+ patches on Steam. These are thrillers from Clockup and specifically the team who worked on Maggot Baits. I'll be sure to try it, and there is a discount till December 23rd.

A remake of Night Shift Nurses has also released. This has an 18+ patch and a release discount until December 30th. This is another where you really should use the 18+ patch as a lot of the game is cut out otherwise.

Shiravune announced The Shell Part III: Paradiso the final part in that series releasing January 22nd, 2025. This is the first time this part of the series is being released. It will have an 18+ patch on release.

SACRIFICE VILLAINS is releasing January 21st, 2025. This is another CLOCKUP game, so expect some interesting story and scenes when it comes out.

Mangagamer are releasing Welcome to a Sexy Open World from MOONSTONE. It releases December 19th, 2024. It's from the same creators as Imouto Paradise and Princess Evangile (two very different games, but both are quite good). This one has a prophecy about a person entering a world and birthing legendary heroes. I believe the protagonist is isekaied after an accident. I think this one is a nukige and I'm the type of guy who loves these games. I hope it has some fun and story in it like the Funbag Fantasy games (excellent games). This is going to be a premium priced title.

Mangagamer released Steam Prison: Beyond the Steam. They also have a sale going on until December 26th on Mangagamer (NSFW).

PQube announced a bunch of games during their showcase and some release dates (links are VNDB NSFW):

Extend Bustafellows Season 2
Kemco D.M.L.C. -Death Match Love Comedy-
Mintlip Him, The Smile & Bloom coming February 2025
MAGES. IWAKURA ARIA

Gensou Manège coming January 31st, 2025.

For these games Bustafellows is highly regarded (need to play season one)
D.M.L.C is a modern release of an older game from the creators of Raging Loop about a story where if you fall in love you explode. It sounds really entertaining.
Him, The Smile & Bloom is an otome about older people and a flower shop. It looks nice.
IWAKURA ARIA looks gorgeous and has some story with a girl x girl pairing. I know nothing about it, but I will play it.

ANIPLEX.EXE released Seedsow Lullaby which is about a funeral procession for gods and a girl is invited by her mother as a sixteen year old to journey over. Another one I know little about other than that the art style is gorgeous. It has a launch discount until December 27th.

MAGES. announces Ever17/Never7 remasters March 6, 2025. Steam, PS4, Switch. JP/EN/CN

Hundred Line releases on April 24, 2025. This one is coming from XSEED and will have a nice physical limited edition for Switch as well.

This is the first time Kodaka (Danganronpa) and Uchikoshi (Zero Escape, Ever17) are writing and directing a game together. 15 students are tasked with defending a school from grotesque monsters for 100 days. Steam, Switch. JP/EN/CN

Choice of real time or turn based combat is interesting. Hopefully they're already laying the groundwork for 2 & 3 so that we don't have to wait years for the remaining story.

edit:
lol, speaking of enhanced versions coming out, one was just announced for Ys:X: https://x.com/Wario64/status/1869611494067085600
Kind of ridiculous that Ys X is getting an enhanced edition already.. the original just released in the west. It's getting the Atlus treatment I guess. I bought it near launch and finished it a few weeks ago. I'll probably rebuy it whenever the new version comes out, I don't expect it to come to the west until 2026 though

Fantasian Neo Dimension - 100% Not for me at all.
Fantasian is going to be my GOTY unless it completely bombs the finale. It was originally a mobile game and Mistwalker's never done lifelike graphics, it's not the prettiest game in the world but I like that it's stylized in a way that doesn't scream "budget graphics" like the flood of chibi games in the late 3DS days. The backgrounds are all almost completely static but with different camera angles, it's meant to be reminiscent of the PS1 Final Fantasy games. Don't really have any strong feelings about the main character, he's certainly not iconic to the level of like Cloud or Cecil but I didn't find him offensive or offputting.

I don't know where the demo leaves off but the mechanic to bank enemies and fight them all at once gets introduced in the first dungeon after the tutorial (Southern Forest). Load times aren't an issue at all on the PS5 version, can't speak for PS4, Switch, or the original mobile versions.

I will agree that the joystick and camera angle stuff is not great but it's very patch-able so hopefully they address it at some point. There were only a few points where it was worse than mildly annoying to me and I'm almost at the final boss.

Yeah the new version of Ys X should be frustrating to Western fans. It's definitely an Atlus-style move and hopefully not a new pattern for Falcom. Actually it's probably a worse outcome than the Atlus releases because IIRC most of those re-releases were global launches. With Ys X, fans learned of a superior release 3mo after the launch of the original game. Brutal. I'm usually pretty aggressive in supporting their releases, but the X LE didn't appeal to me so I guess I won? by waiting for a drop on the pc version.

So, as in Daybreak, the whole 'real time or turn based' choice is likely just a minor addition to the game for the purposes of marketing. Basically trying to draw in people who don't like turn based, even though that's very much what Trails is. Field battles are only useful in progressing through dungeon areas dealing with minor enemies and padding the exp multiplier. Any kind of meaningful or significant battle requires the use turn based commands.

For different reasons, I did not care for Daybreak (especially localized Daybreak) and consider it to take huge steps back in quality in a number of important areas. I'm really excited for Sky the 1st because I love those games. I recently finished a project of modding a vita, applying English patches, and (for the first time) playing the JP Evo versions of FC, SC, and 3rd. But I'm frustrated to see the 1st trailer describe a new localization. This isn't a case like with Tokyo Xanadu where the original Askys localization was comically rough. FC and SC, especially SC, have the single best English script of any Trails game. I hadn't previously heard of GungHo, but at least it's not in the hands of the people who produced Daybreak's insufferable dialogue.

I didn't get Ys X either but I also didn't really like the demo, the sailing and link battle elements just didn't do it for me.

NISA is definitely going to have to give people a loyalty discount for owning the original if they want to counter any of the backlash that they'll receive when the enhanced version releases here, but we'll most likely get a 20-30% off discount at best, and I'm not even sure how it would work for people that own it physically.

I think it was an oversight, since it'll have been close to 2 years when the Japanese enhanced edition is out vs potentially less than a year when it comes to the West. I don't know if atlus is this bad with releasing new versions, don't they typically do it every 3 or 4 years? Not 1-2.

As for the game itself, I enjoyed it a lot and I didn't feel like they skimped on content or anything, so the game does feel "complete" as it is. There's just no post-game content like there was with Ys VIII.

So 2025 for Ys X: Proud Nordics in Japan and then 2026/27 for the North American version (if they do one). I'm not removing Nordics from my watch list right now. If it drops on gamefly to something I find reasonable ($35/$40), I'll probably grab a copy and be done. But I still need to put a little more time in with the demo.

To me, this is great news. I lean more real time these days though I still love turn based when it is done right and doesn't feel like i'm wasting my time. This was part of what made me so interested in Daybreak. Not that I'm against turn based.

I didn't find the character offensive in any way, just not for me. It was way down on my list of things that just didn't click. It was more of an afterthought to a list of technical game issues. Had the character just captivated me up front (amnesia didn't help) and maybe it was just the camera that bothered me, I probably would have kept going. Thankfully there are so dang many great games there's not much reason for me to settle for games that don't tick a lot of boxes. I'm glad so many folks found a game they love. It did give me some FF7 vibes... though FF7 isn't really one of my favorite games as far as world design goes, but I stuck with it quite a long time for the characters/story/music. I never ended up finishing it.

And I’m saying this as someone who has so far skipped Tokyo Xanadu cause it looked so generically anime from my initial impressions.

Yes, Tokyo Xanadu characters are all very generic anime like pretty much every other Falcom game... same for Xenoblade, Persona, Fire Emblem, and so many other Japanese games. Girls have boobs and wear short skirts, guys wear pants and so on. DLC is mostly to dress the girls up in skimpier outfits. The main character is a guy. There's nothing that suggests anything specific though so you can likely play the game and project your own ideas on it and feel like the game leans one way or another when it really doesn't do any heavy handed stuff to suggest anything specific. It's kind of briliant that way. You also have a limited number of special interactions you can engage in which allows you to further bond with characters you like or are just interested in seeing more of. None (so far) are particularly romantic (this is more friendship bonding) but some are sweet and definitely you could feel the main protagonist likes whatever you like based on the interactions.

But if anime style stuff isn't for you (this is the Japanese Niche thread) then it's wise to steer clear. Really most falcom games would apply as well since this is just Trails of Cold Steel in Japan with some action rpg in the dungeons. But if on the other hand you love the Trails series (especially Cold Steel and forward) this might be for you unless you hate modern settings. It has a lot of the same structural elements as a Trails game.

Just my initial impression of the game, and so far a lot of impressions I’ve found describe Tokyo Xanadu as seeming like a kind of generic side project, but still good. More a side note though, in relation to your complaint about a “girly girl looking male protagonist” in the Japanese niche thread. To say I honestly don’t see much difference from the male protagonist of the game you do like, other than a head band? And as a way to also state I don’t necessarily like or prefer that type of male protagonist, but still found the comment a bit odd in the Japanese niche thread. Then bringing up porn preferences and kinks…but whatever. Not a big deal, but it’s like saying you didn’t like a dude bro protagonist because he just oozed too much masculinity in the Xbox thread. I know little about either game though. Does the fantasian story and it’s character’s motivations / dialogue revolve around how much injustice and pain the feminine looking male protagonist has suffered due to how they look, like its an actual theme in the game, and you don’t like it for that reason, or just didn’t like the way he looked?

And my condolences to any that bought and played Ys X already, you just got Atlus’d. NISA has the Persona 5 “Never see it coming“ song on loop in their office right now.

VGP has a reprint of FF7 Intergrade PS5 up for ~$42 USD. Seems like a good buy for anyone who wanted it physical given how hard to find it has been
It's probably safe to assume after the last part releases, there will be a complete edition like Kingdom Hearts (who had a couple actually), right? At this point that assumption is preventing me from getting Remake since god knows when I'll get to playing it.

There will certainly be many more re-releases. But I'm not convinced there will be one with all content complete on physical media. How many SE products do we have containing 5-6 discs?

The rebirth steelbook is back in stock. Best Buy couldn’t fulfill a lot of pre orders with the steelbook and looks like they had some stuck in a warehouse the entire time.

I saw that recently and figured it was some kind of error but guessing it must be true since it seems like people are getting the SB. I had two pre-orders (Standard and deluxe) and both of them arrived with the spines cut... curious if that's still an issue.

Reynatis - is $35 on Gamefly Used and Woot! new.
Given it has a smidge of Neo The World Ends With You as a playable event in the game, I gave some extra attention last night to play through the demo. Yes, it takes some work to figure out that dodge mechanic for siphoning magic from enemies and the navigation map is small with the pointer being a straight line to the destination and not going to direct you to get somewhere... I still managed to fun in the demo. I ended up figuring out the block/siphon thing for quite a bit of it and dialed into the battle mechanics. Shibuya is pretty wonderfully rendered with real world locations including Burger King on Center Street. You don't get to go into businesses, but I love cities and roaming around... so this is a huge plus for me as a sort of virtual tourism thing. But the story was still interesting as were the characters and given it's only 20 hours to finish (or 30 to do everything) it's not like I need to dedicate my life to this game. I ended up grabbing a copy off gamefly ($41.47 after tax and shipping). I enjoyed the demo enough to finish it and the content carries over to the main game. The NEO TWEWY content is kind of a nice little bonus even though it's only a small sampling of a side adventure.

This is definitely not a game for everyone. If you are easily frustrated by new battle systems and not willing to grind a bit to figure out the nuance of something... it might not be for you. I liked the overall story so far and while it's a bit derivative, it still was overall fun.

Wow, Ys vs. Trails is one of those spin-offs that I expected to be lost to time like Tales of the World, Project X Zone, or the original Dissidia. Falcom's still got plenty of stuff to bring forward but they seem to be making good progress and making it a priority. I wish Bamco and Square Enix would take a cue on how to manage their back catalog.

It's been a nice turn of events with Falcom going from not planning to put much on the switch to pretty much everything is on the switch.

Great news! Ys vs. Trails was a recent fan translation project from the same group that produced the localizations of Zero & Azure that NISA would take on as a basis for the official Western releases. The lead editor of Ys vs. Trails was the same one who worked on the relocalization of Toxyko Xanadu for it's recent nsw release by Askys. I've played the geofront PC release of Ys vs Trails and will definitely be supporting the official release. Refint games is an unknown publisher to me though.

So, I am guessing Trails through Daybreak PS5 is out of print? It's gone at amazon, target, walmart, and best buy. Gamestop has it but it's full price and it will probably come opened. I don't even remember seeing the PS5 version ever drop in price. It's expensive on ebay. I only see it at VGP and playasia, still about full price.

It seems to be close to a 50/50 chance whether NISA stuff clearances out like Ys 8 on PS5 when it hit $20 at GameStop or goes OOP.

Trails games don't seem to have high print runs yet again. I don't think the games clearance out as much though they may drop some dollars and appear on Woot or such for a small drop (Trails 3/4 PS5, Nayuta), but it's risky. I'd say if you really want it get it full price or maybe wait for a slight drop at Gamestop. As for the other Trails fighting game I have no nostalgia for it and it looks janky as all heck. I will get that one on a deeper sale.

For NISA it seems:

Disgaea games = higher print run
Trails games = lower print run (many newer games are sold out)
Ys games = lower print run (X in print others here and there)
Everything else = possibly lower print run, but stuff that doesn't sell well is still clearanced out (Crymachina, Monark, Monster Menu, etc....)

It's a sure bet that VGP will reprint it if there's demand. There's also a free upgrade with the ps4 disc. I'd say a decent chance Daybreak 1 & 2 get another "complete" release together. Or possibly 1+2 together with the next coming Trails game (Kai).

Trails games cs3 and 4 had numerous copies floating around at gamestop so they bottomed out. But they were likely just reprints and gamestop converted them to used trying to pull a fast one again.

Yeah VGP seems to reprint most NISA games so just wait for what you want to show up there, and dont pay the inflated Ebay prices.

Trials Through Daybreak is available at retail price for PS5 over on Target.com ...

It's giving me the option to add to cart for shipping, but maybe it's a regional situation?

Also VGP, is showing I can add it to cart... google currency conversion shows $79.99 CAD it comes to $55.47 USD.

For a deal... It might be worth it to bookmark the page for the game on gamefly and just check it a couple times a day. Currently there are no used copies for sale but eventually it'll flip over as available to buy used. It has a keep it price of $49.99... so typically that's what it'll be used when they decide to convert some over for sale. The pattern I've seen over and over and over tracking switch games on GF for a few years now is that at first there's no option to even buy used, then they add the option to buy used but it's marked as sold out, then at some point (possibly a couple weeks later, but it's random) some will get shifted over to being for sale and it'll go live as purchasable used. So until it shows up as "Used" and sold out, you don't really have to check that often. Also for bigger games the first price is usually not much savings, but games drop to $39.99 after about a month from used being available. Sometimes they drop to $34.99 or even $29.99. If it's a big game with lots of copies, the drop happens sooner. If it's a more niche game with fewer copies it may not survive very long unless the game is not good. Renting it and doing the keep it now option is another way to go.

Here's the link for PS5 Daybreak

I added the gamelfy listing to my daily list of stuff I look at. I keep a folder of links to games I'm tracking, a few sites like deku deals and the price drop page for swtich games on gamefly, and then other random things I'm keeping an eye on. So IF i see it pop up for sale used during my daily checks, I'll try to post something but if you really want a deal, defintiely track it yourself ... or just suck it up and hit target for a copy if that's an option.
The switch version (if anyone cares), just hit Bestbuy, it's $53.99 on clearance over there. That's where I got my copy and it's still available.

But with these games the gamble with waiting just, IMO, isn't worth it. But I lean towards having a game in my collection that I want to play while saving a few bucks rather than waiting and just missing out or worse having to suck it up and pay over retail (or play the game of hoping for a reprint but then watching the after market price go up and up and up).

With this Trails games, I'm not going to sit on my hands. But I'm also going to be somewhat picky about them. LIke Ys vs Trails in the Sky looks pretty interesting, but I'm not into fighting games. So, unless there's something I'm missing on the story mode that makes this worth playing for more than just these arena type battles... I'm likely passing on it. Really, IMO, this would be a good packin bonus game for the Trails in the Sky 1 remake.

There's not. There are a handful of side content stories (3 drama cds and 2 magna) that are important for the ongoing Trails world & story. Ys vs. Trails is just a fun side game for fans.

That was pretty much my take on it when I went to watch some youtube videos of people playing the fan translated psp version. Kind of cool but not really necessary. Thanks for the confirmation.

Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2 PS4 did have good discounts when they were available. I got Cold Steel 1 at the Xseed site for $30. I got Cold Steel 2 on black friday 2019, it was $30 at bestbuy and I think amazon. I had to return Cold Steel 2 twice to finally get one in decent condition, they kept shipping it in a bubble mailer. I always thought Xseed would have done a standard edition release but nope.

I feel this pain -- at least I wasn't the only one. Sadly that was during a frantic time of my life and I wasn't able to send back multiple amazon shipments. The outer box of my ps4 CSII is damaged due to the same amazon bubble mailer issue. Sadly this means it gets pushed way to the back of my kiseki shelf.

Fantasian PS5 is sold out on Amazon, the only US retailer, square enix store and VGP. No US region listings left on eBay. Unsure if a restock is planned or not, but currently gone everywhere I think. Going to be a Pixel collection situation, where the PS version becomes way more valuable than the over produced switch version, if it really is gone. Phone game and girly girl man protagonist aside, glad I got a copy. Possibly the last work of some of the GOATS, including freaking Uematsu, might be a good idea to get the switch version while you still can, if it’s something you want physical

Playasia currently has there 3 for $100 sale. Lots of Asian-English, some pre-orders including NA releases (these wont all ship until they're all in stock), some English sub games and also their newest Eastasiasoft releases and some other stuff. There is also some other holiday sales as well.

I’m a little behind the times here, but how’s performance of Persona 5 Royal on Switch in handheld mode? Digital Foundry wasn’t super complimentary, but that was around release, so I’m not sure if it ever got any performance patches.

Hm... VGP is showing it in stock right now, I picked placed an order to be safe.

Nice! This may be just a last few copies showing back up. Wouldn’t be a reprint yet. I’m not going to check everywhere else again, but there was not a single copy available to buy on the internet just prior to Vinny’s find of VGP getting it back. VGP is also the cheapest price with the CAD exchange rate, no tax, and their reward points system. Could be lots of copies still out there, just logistics problems for retailers right now, and could be a reprint at any point, but Square Enix store already being sold out, even with their ridiculous shipping cost, just having 1 US retailer, and the scars of the pixel remaster first print run still fresh; make up your own mind, but don‘t complain if you pass it up now and it shoots up in value as soon as VGP really sells out. That’s it if no where else finds more copies.

Is $54 for the Asian release of Ninja Gaiden Master Collection lowest we can expect at PA? I figure with the free shipping offer, getting that plus some other games is prob the best I'll do on a English cover release...

Started the Fantasian demo tonight (have only just recruited Kina), and so far I’m really enjoying it. Feels like a natural extension of Sakaguchi-era Final Fantasy (which is the only good Final Fantasy), so much so that I was honestly surprised the clock in the inn didn’t have an elixir. Liking the diorama “graphics” a lot, too. Even the English voice acting is surprisingly decent. Also looking forward to trying that delayed combat mechanic, it sounds interesting.

I was a little wary after Terra Battle was so plodding that I bounced off it, so I’m pleasantly surprised.
