Japanese Video Game Figure Thread

This thread is dedicated to Japanese produced video game figures. In the past, Japanese figures were mostly used for manga and anime characters, but lately they have started making figures from video game franchises. This is more of an awareness announcement than a deal thread since figures can easily sell out long before they are available and the second hand market can be crazy expensive. Pre-ordering is usually the cheapest way to get a popular figure.

Released Figures:

To give you an idea of what Japanese figures look like, the following are some that have been released over the years:

About Japanese Figures:

Scale figures, like Zero Suit Samus, are statues made of ABS and PVC. Scale are bigger than Figma, more detailed, and again for display rather than play. Scale figures are not posable and may not come with accessories or alternate facial expressions.

Figma is like an action figure but higher quality. Figma are very posable and come with accessories, alternate faces, and alternate hands to recreate poses from the source material (as well as make up your own scenarios). Check out all the different display poses they show off in pics. While they are designed with posability in mind, these are still meant for display rather than play. These aren't like action figures you would give a kid. Many Figma parts are compatible with other Figmas, allowing you to create interesting combinations of outfits and expressions.

Nendoroid are cutesy interpretations of characters. Each is about 4" tall and, like Figma, usually comes with various faces/hands/accessories to reproduce poses/scenes from the source material. Also like Figma, many Nendo parts are compatible with other Nendos. Faces, hair, hands, and outfits can often be swapped between characters.

Real Action Heroes (RAH) are like a blend of scale figure, Figma, and doll. They are still made of ABS and PVC, but the clothes are made of fabric, giving them a more realistic look. RAH are posable like Figma and typically include accessories and alternate faces. They are bigger than your average scale figure and very high quality. Accordingly, they are also exceedingly expensive.

Shipping:

Don't forget about shipping cost. SAL small packet registered should cost $10-20 and takes about 2-3 weeks to reach me in Florida. SAL may also be available unregistered for 410 JPY less, but you lose tracking and insurance (so if your package goes missing, you are sol). EMS is the best shipping and only takes about 2 days to arrive but is considerably more expensive. There is also SAL Parcel, but it is worth spending a little extra for EMS. You may have to use EMS if your item is too big to fit in a SAL box. I always use SAL registered when I can. If you pre-order multiple figures, you can combine shipping if they come out in the same month (assuming no delays) and save some money.

Shipping cost is based on weight. If you are ordering multiple figures at once, it is cheaper to request two SAL shipments than one EMS. It is also cheaper to combine items than do separate shipments for each. From my experience, 3-4 Nendoroid/Figma will fit in a single SAL box. A scale figure may fit with 1-2 Nendoroid/Figma boxes, depending on the scale and size of figure box used. Some figures come in larger boxes than expected. There is no way to know how large/heavy your figure will be before ordering. Some stores may offer an estimate at time of order or indicate that an item should be compatible with SAL.

SAL unregistered (no tracking or insurance) does not require a signature upon delivery. All other shipping methods do, so try to be home on delivery day. If you miss the delivery, you can stop by your local post office for pickup starting the next day.

Payment:

For most Japanese shops, you don't pay until the figure(s) is ready to ship. The exceptions are some limited edition items (which you'll have to pay for in full at time of purchase, including shipping) and certain stores that require a % deposit. Payment is best done through PayPal.

The current exchange rate can be viewed in PayPal -> Profile -> My Money -> Currencies (disclosure arrow of PayPal balance). The PP rate is always a little more expensive than the current rate since they charge a fee for the exchange (I believe 2.5%, the rate you see is already calculated with that fee). You can also opt to pay directly from your PP tied bank account or cc when checking out with PP.. You will have to check your bank and cc websites for their rate info, including whatever % fee they use for the exchange. Best case scenario would be to use a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees.

You will usually receive an invoice the day after an item is released. Shipping usually occurs the day after payment is sent, depending on the store.

Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

AmiAmi: http://www.amiami.com/
My favorite store. Among the best prices. Easily combine orders by month. Amazing pre-owned section. Shipping is usually a little more than other stores since they use lots of packing materials.

Hobby Link Japan: http://www.hlj.com/
My second favorite store. Usually a bit more expensive than the store listed here. In exchange for higher prices, you can cancel orders at any time. Private warehouse feature lets you hold items for up to 60 days to combine shipping, though you still pay for the figure at time of release. Excellent customer service.

Hobby Search: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/
Can combine orders of the same month but not as nicely as AmiAmi. Can cancel a pre-order within the first week of placing.

Big in Japan: http://biginjap.com/
Prices usually a little lower than the rest. Good selection of prize figures. Can pay for pre-orders upfront. Can combine orders by month if you send them a message through your order history page. Can act as proxy or forwarder. Not good at responding to emails, so I don't use them now as much as I used to.

Tokyo Otaku Mode: http://otakumode.com/
Charges in USD $, pay upfront at time of placing order. Regularly offers coupons and bonus point campaigns. Has a Premium membership that is well worth getting since it pays for itself ($15 for 3 months gives you $16.50 in points), 5% off everything, slightly cheaper shipping, and better coupons. You get $5 in points when you register your account, plus another $5 if you signup through a referral link (referrer also gets $5), making your first order $10 off. Excellent customer service.

Amazon Japan: https://www.amazon.co.jp/

Thanks to their Global program, many of their figures are now eligible to be shipped directly to your house rather than having to go through a proxy/forwarder. This is only available on figures fulfilled by Amazon, including those sold by third-party and fulfilled by Amazon. Not all Amazon fulfilled items are eligible for Global shipping. Shipping cost is very good (around RSAL cost) and very fast (3-6 days). Japanese consumption tax (8%) is removed from the advertised price at checkout.

Plamoya: http://www.plamoya.com
Check for sales, otherwise usually overpriced.

Secondhand Japanese Shops I've Used and Recommend:

I buy a lot secondhand. The items are usually in great condition and, for most of my orders, have never been opened before. This lets me get figures I missed out on before I started collecting or couldn't budget at time of release.

AmiAmi Pre-owned: http://www.amiami.com/top/page/c/preowned.html
My favorite store for secondhand figures thanks to a daily updated selection, cheap shipping options, and combining pre-owned items with my pre-orders for that month. Items are rated by separate figure and box conditions. "A" condition means it looks brand new, "B" means there is some normal ware but should still be good, "C" or lower you should probably avoid (at least for figure condition, I personally don't care too much about secondhand box condition). Pricing is hit or miss, but usually good compared to other stores. Their selection is good and updated daily (except Sundays). Stock status is accurate when ordering.

Mandarake: http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/
Excellent source for secondhand figures. Mandarake is a web front for a collection of B&M hobby stores in Japan. Their selection is huge, pricing is great, and new items are added daily. Many of their secondhand items have never been opened. The condition is commonly something like "not opened/box damaged" which translates to it will look brand new when you get it :3 Each order can only be from a single store since it will be shipping from that one location. Because these are B&M stores, an item you ordered may sell out that same day in store (this has happened to me a few times). In that case, the item is removed from your order, or if your order is just one item, the order is cancelled. You can check boxes for "cancel order if this item is oos". You'll receive an email the following day with the items they were able to secure (hopefully everything in your order), the total including shipping, and a link to payment.

Suruga-ya: http://www.suruga-ya.jp/
Warning: Suruga-ya is in Japanese and requires a proxy or forwarder to get your items (see below for details).
Huge selection and low prices. Sales on items can randomly start at any time. Adding more items to your cart can give you a % discount. Stock system is accurate, at least from my experiences. As the website is only available in Japanese, use MFC to find the Japanese name of the character you are interested in so that you can perform a search.

Recommended US Shops:

Big Bad Toy Store (BBTS): http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/ (allows cancellations, no money down required on pre-orders, warehouse feature, $4 shipping)
Crunchyroll: http://www.crunchyroll.com/store/ (check for weekly deals, free shipping at $75)
Tokyo Otaku Mode (TOM): http://www.otakumode.com/ (I also count them as a US shop since some of their items are fulfilled by US warehouse, free shipping at $150)
Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/ (occasionally has some figures at good prices)

My Figure Collection:

MFC is an amazing (and free) community of figure collectors. It has info on all Japanese figures including release dates, pics, user ratings, reviews, etc. If you are interested in Japanese figure collecting, I highly recommend joining to keep track of your collection and follow the latest news on upcoming releases. Here's my MFC profile as an example: http://myfigurecollection.net/profile/Cantisama

CAG has an MFC club that you can join here: http://myfigurecollection.net/club/1219

Proxy and Forwarding:

There are two services when buying an item that cannot be shipped directly to your country, a proxy and a forwarder. A proxy is a business or person located in the host country (Japan in our case) that places an order on your behalf and then ships it to you.

With a forwarder, you are the one who places the order. You set the shipping address to that of the forwarder who is located in the host country. The forwarder then ships the package to you upon receipt.

Forwarding is typically cheaper than using a proxy since a proxy will charge a % fee based on order total that includes the cost of the item(s). Since with forwarding you are the one paying for the items directly, any % fee is only applied to the cost of shipping + a small forwarding fee. Using a proxy can be easier though since you don't have to place the order yourself on a website that may be only available in a foreign language.

There are many proxy and forwarding service providers. For Nendo Red from Amazon.co.jp, I used Big in Japan as a forwarder and the transaction went perfectly. Fees were also very reasonable.

Foreign transactions fees is basically conversion fees right?

I have a Chase Sapphire that has no foreign transactions fee so I'll pay with that if that's the case.

Discover cards don't have any foreign fees either but I don't think AmiAmi takes discover.
I assume you mean the Chase Sapphire Preferred? The normal Chase Sapphire has foreign transaction fees.

It's more of figuring out how much they are charging for shipping. The only problem is that they don't calculate the shipping until you order but I don't want to order if the price of shipping plus the conversion fee is going to make it on par of ordering from an American site considering canceling orders is a no-no for AmiAmi. On top of that wait 2-5 weeks.

I want Guyver but there are also a few other figures I've been wanting to pre-order as well.
Hobby Link Japan and Big in Japan offer shipping estimates. With BiJ if you choose to pay up front, you pay whatever the shipping estimate is instead of what it turns out to be at release. This is also how you can get away with using SAL Unregistered on orders over 5000yen (which they normally would force to be registered shipping).

The shipping estimate for Figma Guyver at BiJ is 680yen for SALU. The average I've noticed for a single Figma or Nendo order is 680-880yen. Add 410yen if you want registered shipping.

Even after overseas shipping and foreign exchange fees, it's almost always cheaper to buy from Japan than from US store. The few exceptions are, for example, Kotobukiya figures since they have a branch in US. You also get your order at least a month before US stores.

http://www.anime-island.com/products/bio-booster-armor-guyver-guyver-i-figma-231-max-factory.html

Isn't that about the same price as AmiAmi?

One thing to keep an eye on is Crunchrolls daily deals. I've seen some preorder figures go for less than the cheaper JP prices, plus they offer free shipping and extra discounts if you are a premium member. Downside is their selection is limited and waiting for them to post your figure on the DD. I've actually gotten INCREDIBLY lucky and ever figure I've ever wanted has been there. Except the Seven deadly sins series.

On an unrelated note, I've decided that I need this Selvaria Bless figure, http://myfigurecollection.net/item/13815, does anyone have it and want to sell?

PS I'm on my tablet so don't criticize my formatting lol

It is actually, is it too much to hope that they'll list it on Amazon store so I can use my Amazon credit instead? Hmmm damn I might just hold of on pre-orders and hope Guyver isn't to popular with everyone else.

Browsing through their Amazon selection seems unlikely though =(

If i end up getting this -- i'm posing it with the polygon face.

Unboxed Max Factory 1/7 Tharja today. Good God is she stunning! I switched out her base (which has a felt top that would get gross since I don't have closed displays) for a mirror base from a dollar store. I think it was intended to hold candles. It works well so I'm going to pick up a few more.

This Snake figure is fire! Can't wait to get it

Received MegaHouse 1/7 Elf and she is near perfect. Only drawback is a lackluster base. Despite this, her sculpt and paint are topnotch. I would recommend to fans of the game. I need to decide if I want to get Sorceress as well. I've only played as Elf so far though.

Also got around to unboxing Revoltech Revengeance Raiden. He's even better than Revoltech Peace Walker Snake. You know it's good when you can't decide which of the many poses you want to currently use. I went with a standing pose, but I'm probably going to switch to watermelon slicing in the near future. He comes with an alternate red eye that looks fierce in person. Like other Revoltech, you can point the eye wherever you want. The sword/knife sheath has several joints so it is easy to position. Figure quality is excellent. Another rec for fans of the game.

So, I'm just getting into buying some figures (mostly Funko stuff), but there are some Nendoroids I want. I pre-ordered WW Link and Solid Snake from Tokyo Otaku Mode since the prices were solid and there was free shipping. Anybody ever order from there?

And I wish I had known about Nendoroid Red months before. I want one so badly, but the prices are 100+ for pre-orders. I'm a bit scared to buy one from Ebay since they'll probably be fake. I assume they're fake because all but one listing are from Hong Kong.

You should be good with TOM. I haven't used them but the little I read on MFC was positive.

Nendoroid Red was handled so poorly. He was exclusive to Japan and so required a proxy to order. Even then the stock was very low and he sold out quickly. Some are hoping that the recently re-opened Pokemon Center in US will offer him at some point: http://www.pokemoncenter.com/

I'm conflicted about what to do. I have a Shimakaze scale figure on order from N-Y, my first and only order with them. It's not likely to be a bootleg, since it's a new release, but I also really hate people profiting from bootlegging/pirating.

Doesn't look like that Shimakaze has a known bootleg so you should be fine. With Snow Miku 2014, bootlegs were possible before web release because people got the figure months earlier from cons.

I've only ordered once from N-Y. The service was terribly slow and the figure box arrived wrecked. The figure was legit though. Supposedly their service is faster now.

I have 3 Seven Deadly Sins girls on order from N-Y. I think this is more of an isolated case, though I have heard about them shipping the wrong items, slightly used items sold as new and such. They likely don't do too much of a check of what they get from whatever distributors they have, so they may get bootlegs.

I likely wont order from them again mainly cause of the horrible customer service they gave to the person in question for the bootleg Miku nendo.

I have gotten 2 Sailor Moon figuarts 100% legit, so hopefully these bad cases are few and far between.

I've read recommendations for them, Treasure Japan, Big in Japan, Proxy Rabbit, and several others on MFC. I've only used a proxy once and went with BiJ: http://myfigurecollection.net/blog/15573

Rather than go through a proxy though, I would use Big in Japan's forwarding service. The way it works is you order the figure on amazon.co.jp, bill to your credit card, but set shipping address to BiJ. BiJ receives the package and then sends it to you using whatever shipping method you request. They only charge 500 yen to forward + cost of shipping to you + PayPal fee. Should be cheaper than buying proxy since proxy will charge you % of total item cost in addition to the base fee.

I'm actually trying out BiJ forwarding for the first time this week for some figures I ordered from Suruga-ya. I also placed an order for the same Red Nendo and set up BiJ as the shipping address. Not sure if I'll keep this order though. It's Amazon so I can cancel before release. I can also hold off paying for the BiJ forwarding ticket until release.

It would be nice if we could order directly from amazon.co.jp, but they only offer international shipping for books and movies. Even then, I've heard their international shipping prices are so ridiculous that it's cheaper to use a forward or proxy.

Last time I shopped around for a proxy service, I found dv8cag.com to be the most inexpensive. He's also better at responding to questions than other similar services as he doesn't use canned responses. He can either purchase the item for you or forward an item that you purchase; the former is more expensive, but neither is cost restrictive.

Thanks for the replys. I had already placed the order at fromjapan but I wanted to get some opinions. I thought to look for a CAG thread on this sort of thing after the fact. Next time I will use dv8cag, his site seems to be the most straightforward as far as fees go and I would feel better helping out a CAG. Now I am off to find the best price on nendoroid isabelle from animal crossing. That figure is the one that got me researching these things in the first place.

I recently used FromJapan for a Surugaya order, which has gone mostly well so far, but I'm sticking with dv8CAG for non-media Amazon.co.jp stuff.

CDs, too! I place a media order there roughly once or twice a year, mainly for game music. You can also get many books/CDs/videos there which come with bonus items, such as figures; here's one such item I got from them with my most recent order (before it sold out, of course ).

Their shipping rates have gotten a lot better over the past year or so. For overseas shipping for books, it used to be 2,700 yen per shipment, and 300 per item. Now, it's only 800 yen per shipment (regardless of what it contains) and either 300 or 400 yen per item. (It's worth noting that Fulfilled by Amazon items, whenever you can find ones that ships internationally, still use the old rate for some reason.)

Either way, it's been cheapest/easiest for me ordering directly from them than going just about anywhere else for media orders containing multiple items, especially when they include heavy books and/or discounted game music.

Crap, I should have ordered it myself while it was in stock. It is currently out of stock and fromjapan just refunded my money... If it comes back in stock I will have it shipped to dv8CAG. At least fromjapan was quick to give me a refund.

http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%83%9D%E3%82%B1%E3%83%A2%E3%83%B3-%E3%83%9D%E3%82%B1%E3%83%A2%E3%83%B3%E3%82%BB%E3%83%B3%E3%82%BF%E3%83%BC%E3%82%AA%E3%83%AA%E3%82%B8%E3%83%8A%E3%83%AB-%E3%81%AD%E3%82%93%E3%81%A9%E3%82%8D%E3%81%84%E3%81%A9-%E3%83%AC%E3%83%83%E3%83%89/dp/B00KF8CULE/ref=sr_1_2?s=hobby&ie=UTF8&qid=1408327969&sr=1-2&keywords=nendoroid

That's one of the drawbacks of proxies... waiting for them to place the order while figures easily go out of stock.

I randomly checked this morning and saw Nendo Red available for a bit before selling out again. If you haven't already, get your amazon.co.jp account set up with forwarding address so you'll be ready for a quick checkout.

Damn, I wish I would have checked then. I set it up with dv8CAG's address as soon as the order was cancelled. Hopefully it comes back in stock and or is more available when it is actually is released.

And thanks to whoever posted about toon link for $40 with free shipping on tokyo otaku mode, I used that $5 promo by referring myself to get it for 35 with free shipping. Anyone have suggestions on the cheapest way to get isabelle? I am looking for the summer version.

When the hell did that happen? I just paid 1200 yen for an artbook in July. Could have saved like $4.

Since at least May, though I think I noticed the change at least a month or two earlier than that. I did an order with them then (which turned into a group order) mainly to get an artbook where their required express shipping was cheaper than it would've been for SAL at CDJapan!

Thanks, I had no idea what N-Y was before your post. I actually ended up haggling with a seller on eBay and got a winter version for 38.50 and someone put up the summer version on amazon with prime for 45.79 so I ordered that too. This guy convinced me to get both haha. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_xvzzYQKcc. Summer version should be here Friday so I am pretty excited for my first nendo.

I was also able to order a Nendo red from amazon.co.jp (it came back in stock for a few moments yesterday) and I have it shipping to dv8cag so thanks again for the referrals. I also ordered a http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B00HE8051U/ref=ox_ya_os_product_refresh_T1 with that order and it says it is shipping two days after the nendo red so hopefully that works out.

I am glad the toon link is delayed, my wallet gets a break after the two I just bought. Also, anyone seen these before http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?gcode=FIGURE-005807 ? I cant find any reviews on them but I would love to have reese, kk, and tom nook next to isabelle. Is amiami decent with shipping charges? When I get to checkout it tells me shipping is to be determined.

As promised!

[attachment=7533:image.jpg]

I threw in the Nendoroid Isabelle for size comparison - the Sofubi figures are just a little larger.  I'm very pleased with these, and I'll probably go ahead and order the Isabelle/K.K. Slider pack for completion sakes, despite already having the Isabelle Nedoroid and not caring much for the sculpt on K.K..  At just under $20 for the set from Amazon Japan, the price wasn't bad, either.

Oh man, these are adorable.

FYI, as of right now Nendoroid Red is back up for pre-order on Amazon JP. Was able to order one and send it to my friend who lives there.
