Focus Features picks up Juan of the Dead for US release

The Cuban zombie comedy Juan of the Dead played at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and now it has been picked up for a North American release by Focus Features’ new digital distribution arm, Focus World. The eponymous character is 40-year-old slacker who makes zombie lemonade out of zombie lemons when a zombie outbreak hits Cuba and he’s able to make some scratch by slaying families’ fresh undead. Some critics have seen it as a political allegory, but director Alejandro Brugues says its commentary on Cuba is how its citizens manage to find a way to deal with poverty.

According to Variety, Focus World plans to release premieres titles across video-on-demand and electronic sell-thru platforms, including cable/satellite providers, iTunes, Xbox 360, Playstation and YouTube. However, Juan won’t go directly to digital distribution. The movie will play U.S. festivals, and begin a theatrical run in April from a separate distributor. I’ve heard it’s a fun, interesting flick, and I look forward to see it in the near future.

That doesn't look bad actually, especially compared to some of the crap *of the dead movies we've gotten lately.
Cool. Who doesn't love zombies?
Well I love zombies. But I hate how they are now a pop culture icon in american society. You cant turn around without running into a zombie comic book, a novel, a tv show, a song on the radio, a movie, some reference, a commercial, a video game, a figure, a tshirt or something related to a zombie.

Zombies are now considered cool to like which also means they are over played and over used. Zombies are great in moderation but our society tends to oversaturate itself with any trend and thus boring me. Kind of like vampires used to be ok, not my favorite but ok, now you cant do anything without seeing something vampire related but atleast its going away.
Why is the name of the movie a pun only in English?
Because they want someone other than cubans to pay attention. "Look, look! We made a zombie comedy and its called juan of the dead! Like shaun of the dead only with juan!.........please like us".

I saw the trailer a few days back and I gotta say I'm interested. Somewhat hoping they release it here as "Juan de los Muertos" if only to avoid the guaranteed comparisons to Shaun and Dawn. It'll still say the same thing, but a lot of people probably won't know that.
