Wow, great link.

On the upcoming City sets, something like the Marina set's boat is this "new" LEGO thing that gets under my skin. It's basically like they're throwing in a free plastic boat with every Marina purchase. I know I'm a little nostalgic, but the inclusion of these huge molded pieces is a recent innovation, it's cutting corners that (IMO) degrades their brand ever so slightly.

I love that Pirates of the Caribbean ship, the Revenge. There's some fun brickwork in that, the minifig "skulls" aft are hilarious. At the bow of the ship, those curved pieces look as though they might snap onto an existing structure rather than that being one huge bow piece. Yay. Too bad this one's probably a little beyond my kids' skill level.

And the Creator Lighthouse is right on target, though it seems like LEGO's using the Creator line to unload a lot of these angled roof pieces (here they're on the little house and the shoreline). Part of why I like the Creator theme is that the builds remind me more of the LEGO I grew up with. I can see the bricks in everything. For instance, unlike the City Marina set, the boat in the Creator Lighthouse is built up rather than a single piece. That's how it's supposed to be. /oldmanfistshake

EDIT: On that Flickr account's other photos, I saw some close detail of the Harry Potter Diagon Alley set. That is really, really nice, and I'm no HP fan. There's some neat building to that, it looks great. I could see that set would be good to have just to borrow from for use in other stuff.

Separate post for this:

I just realized this thread is LEGO deals. If I should keep the LEGO discussion to myself, or make a thread in OT for it, please let me know. I don't want to get in the way of minifig tracking!

I'm enjoying the education, in any case...
I know I'm a little nostalgic, but the inclusion of these huge molded pieces is a recent innovation
And this is when you are wrong.

LEGO has always made floating boat hulls. The set GoingIncognito got as a kid has a HUGE window piece. LEGO makes rock pieces that can be made from other bricks. LEGO has always made big pieces instead of using bricks.

And the Creator Lighthouse is right on target, though it seems like LEGO's using the Creator line to unload a lot of these angled roof pieces (here they're on the little house and the shoreline). Which is the whole point of the Creator theme, it's bricks. LEGO really went in the shitter in the late 90s and early 00s, really bad, almost went bye-bye bad. They realized they needed to change to fit the world today and they started making more action themes. At the same time they realized they need to still make bricks. So now they make sets that appeal to everyone. I frankly hate this year's City sets, probably the worst sets since City started in 2005, but they still make great sets.

I mean look at this helicopter from the early 80s...
http://brickset.com/detail/?Set=645-1
It's ugly as can be, no kid would buy that crap today.

Then look at a few classic police sets....

:booty:

If you want shit sets without bricks here is a $60 police station from 1998...
http://brickset.com/detail/?Set=6332-1

Five 1x2 bricks were replaced by 1 1x2x5 pieces in the early 90s, however most sets contain bricks still. Look at the new Castle sets (called Kingdoms because children liked that name more), they are still bricks everywhere, Creator is bricks, even the new Alien Conquest is surprisingly "blocky". Don't use one horrible HORRIBLE City year against LEGO. Lego City is now used to sell against video games and Hess trucks, it's a different world. The Police station looks like something we would have gotten the last 15+ years, which is actually my problem with it.

Maybe you are better off ignoring the City sets and going straight to these....

No one here cares, we usually go into talks about new sets, favorites, MOCs. Cheapy doesn't care, the site leaves us alone until the thread gets insanely huge.

I know that they're competing in a new market. I still don't recall any one-use pieces from my sets in the early 80s. Which is to say that helicopter you linked from the 80s to me looks just right. :p Look at all those lovely bricks!

Anyhow, I get it from a so-called business perspective. They do these one-use pieces to cater to modern tastes and stay competitive. I guess it's just the principle of it all, that LEGO should always be essentially LEGO, but whatever. No more oldman fist shaking.

You're right to point me to the Creator and Modular Buildings sets, they're right up my alley. The Kingdom line, too, though I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on the King's Castle (I'm not a hoarder, even at 50% off). Honestly, I'd be all over some of these if I could 1) find them in the wild and 2) find them on sale. I've seen some of them at my local LEGO store, but I doubt I'll ever have a chance to buy something like the Grand Emporium on sale. Besides, it doesn't matter, that's way beyond the kids.

And in all the City sets you linked, I've want-listed a few of those. The Camper, the Recycle Truck. It's like anything, though, beats me if I'll 1) find them and 2) find them on sale.

EDIT: Just saw the Recycle Truck is discontinued. So that's out.

I'm pretty sure all the sets I listed are retired besides the big blue plane with the "shuttle nose", the camper, and the sea plane. The sea plane is only like $10, I suggest buying that. My point was that LEGO still makes decent City sets, just not this year.

And I forgot one that is still being made, and easily found. The set is so old (from 2005) that is uses the wrong color window frame (smoke black instead of trans blue) and doesn't match the newer fire sets. I think it's one of the longest lasting LEGO sets ever made.

http://brickset.com/detail/?Set=7239-1

And this is the best cheap helicopter LEGO has made in awhile, I didn't know they still had it.

http://shop.lego.com/ByTheme/Product.aspx?p=7741&cn=153&d=9

And I was born in 1985, so I wouldn't know of the early 80s sets. However they look bad and good at the same time. They look like they have a lot of bricks, but at the same time boxy. It's why I like the 90s sets because they got the ratio of bricks and not having the sets and cars be boxy.

The camper also is still available. I definitely recommend getting that soon since it's an older set, though. It's the kind of set I would of loved as a kid.

The Camper, the Seaplane, and the City Corner are all technically still in active release. I'm sure they'd hit big with my kids, but that City theme pricing, man. $60 for 480p on the City Corner. I'd need a good sale. Camper and Plane would be easier to swallow at (though preferably under) MSRP, if I could find them...

Yeah I forgot about the Camper, that has been on sale a lot. I got it around Thanksgiving for $12 because of the $5 Target coupon (see we are talking about sales :) ). Also a great set with a bike and surfboard, and the female is awesome in the set.

I was just looking for the City Corner online. Wal-Mart online has it, though at no discount.

I was surprised to see, though, that Wal-Mart offers the enormous Tower Bridge set at 10% off MSRP. That's $20 back to you, plus you can get it shipped free. It's too rich for me, but there it is.

Does LEGO.com ever do any deals? Free S&H promotions, deep discounts, etc.?

Oh yes, this past Dec 24th to the middle of January they cleared out a ton of sets online and in stores. However the stores were all hordered to hell it seems. Half off of Prince of Persia, then 75% off. Half off most Atlantis, Space Police and Farm sets. I missed out on the farm, but got my pigs. Since then it's been dead. There used to be $5 off $20 or $25, but then LEGO ended that or cracked down on it, I'm not sure what happened. People were using them too much and LEGO didn't like it. However without it I don't bother with S@H anymore.

Most of us here use it, they are the only website I know who updates Amazon prices really quickly because the prices fluctuate so much.
I have wanted the City Corner, but there has never been a good sale on it, and I am guessing I may never actually get it.
City Corner was clearanced at Target for $15. My friend and I bought a few.

BTW, are any of the sets on sale at Toys R Us this week a good deal?

I actually found a bunch of flattened Lego boxes from my childhood, all in pretty good shape, including the original Lego Castle boxes and some of the really early space ones. Here are some that I found:

The Galaxy Explorer and Galaxy Command:

Original yellow castle (note the horses made from pieces!), original joust set, and the Black Monarch's castle:

^ That wasn't wide spread, that was some crazy mis-pricing thing that happened at Target, mine got in 6 of them after that and each was $60. I would have bought 2-3 for $15.

Yeah, I had 497 and 6970. I love those sets. Simple and versatile.

As it is now, I'm not impressed with LEGO online. They charge tax and don't offer S&H volume discounts. As for local LEGO store sales, my local store (Mall of America) is nuts without a promotion going on. Who knows what it's like when there's a clearance bin, I'd imagine there's just a big pile-on with a lot of kidney punching and groin grabs.

And what's all this about Farm sets? Which theme did that fall under? The kids go apeshit for farm miscellany, if that stuff is still out there, I'd consider going full MSRP for that.

Bookmarked. Thanks!

Farm was under City (Yes LEGO City Farm) and you wouldn't have gotten it for full price, the prices were insane.

You missed out on it because it was a TRU exclusive theme and S@H clearanced them out in December with their mega-sale. I waited 20 years for LEGO Farm, and frankly it sucked. The only set I bought was the pig farm because I wanted the lime green tractor and the pigs. People are hoping with all the new animals this year, new dogs, goats, chickens and painted pigs that Farm returns to City in 2012 or 2013, but I doubt it.

Hmm...

THIS IS ACTUALLY SOMEWHAT A DEAL!

Shocking Amazon has the pig farm set for only $29 (I got it for 19. The MSRP was $35. No tax and free shipping...

That was one HUGE window. I'm not even sure if that window was ever used in another set, or if it was it was probably a dome piece from a space base. You can find this set reasonably priced on eBay, too!

I also had an awesome police boat set with a one-piece molded hull. I used that boat hull for an absolute ton of different builds.

As noted, these are/were available at ToysRUs and the Lego Stores/Shop @ Home.

Your Toys R Us may still have one or more of the sets. Mine still has the pig farmer mini-pack, I think it's $5 or so. Comes with a farmer, a pig, a dog and some accessories.

Neither the large farm nor the pig farm are being sold by Amazon, it's from a 3rd party reseller. That's why it's $100. If amazon had it, they'd be selling it for less. The pig farm was clearanced pretty cheap at Shop @ Home, IIRC.

Man, those Farm sets are kinda lame. Thanks for pointing them out at Amazon, but I'll take a pass. It looks like a waste of a really good theme.

So the combination of 1) the mention that the City Camper set might be discontinued soon, 2) the knowledge that the camper is exactly the kind of thing my kids would love, and 3) my inability to find it anywhere nearby (2 Targets, a Wal-Mart, a TRU, and I don't know how many B&Ns) got me to buy it online from TRU for in-store pickup. I paid $2 over MSRP for that mofo, TRU has some interesting pricing.

Wife asks me to run to Target last night for supplies, and I figured I'd make an event out of it and head to a Target further away. Yep, you guessed it: it was like I'd passed out and awoke in a LEGO campground, there were Campers everywhere. They must've had at least a dozen.

At least the set is relatively cheap, so it wasn't an expensive lesson. But still, never again. I'll stick to deals, something about paying full price just feels icky.

LEGO used to have a pattern for when sets would be discontinued, now it's anyone's guess. They still make the Police Helicopter and Fire Truck from years ago, but newer sets are gone. The Camper should be discounted soon, but I swear Target makes the sets in their back rooms so you never know.

And has anyone here seen / used the Brickset forums? Welcome to 1995.

The forums are unusable. Whoever did the site should be smacked :)

My thoughts from the last couple of pages since I haven't been here for a while :)

When I was a kid, I had 2 sets from the Basic line, and it was all bricks just like the Creator line is now. When I got a little older, I moved on to the Town and got these sets:

http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6396-1
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6395-1

I remember my parents paying $50-$60 for each of those, which put the $ per brick right around 10 cents. That's also where I started seeing the stacked bricks and specialty pieces, so they've been around for a while now.

And while the late 90's sets might've sucked for City, I thought the Ninja and Western sets were really well made. I got a taste of those late 90's sets when I bought a lot at a yard sale.

Here are some of the worst:

That whole trailer is one piece! So is the helicopter and truck seat.
6328-1.jpg

This one is very similar to the police station posted by bigdaddy. 137 pieces for a building doesn't equal a good set.
6426-1.jpg

And some of the best IMO:

Here's another one I found the box to and loved as a kid, the public works depot/garage.

I doubt we would ever see Cowboys vs Indians again, however Cowboys vs. Aliens is coming out this year and that wouldn't be anymore crazy than NinjaGo. :) I'm hoping in a few more years we get some crazy "action" cowboy theme because I doubt we'll get one like in that of the 90s.

Here is a new polybag of AC...

http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=49964&view=findpost&p=961662

The people over... #-o :wall:

"I'm so buying 10 of these and making an army."

It's most likely a $4 set that will be harder to find. There is a $5 set that comes with a soldier, an alien and probably 15 more pieces.

Speaking of poly-bags the Target near I don't think has sold a single one since putting them out for Easter. There are several dozens of the lame firefighter one and probably a few of the AT-TE, the walking thing.

I've noticed the same, but I was wondering if I was missing something with the Ninjago Chicken/Dragon polybag. My Target has put those out, but they disappear fast. The Star Wars and firefighter languish.

Is it a popularity thing or something else that makes them really desirable? Or do I just have a local guy who REALLY loves ninjas? One day Target had 20+, then next day zero. Weird. I've seen hording with minifigs, clearance, etc., just never with the Target polybags.

My Target never put out the ninja set, there is a sticker for it, but not really any room, so I can't say if someone is hording them, but it's likely they are and selling them on eBay for $10 a piece because they are SPECIAL EDITION AND RARE!!!!

Heh...I bought a few of them, as did my friend. It's a cheap red ninja army builder. He even transformed one into a cyborg-ninja by swapping out the cyborg arm, leg, and head of the series 3 cyborg, it looks pretty hilarious. I told him he should try to sell it on eBay for ridiculous amounts as "super unique and one of a kind (can be built by anyone who gets those 2 $3 and $3.50 polybags)" LOL.

The Targets I've checked out all have one of the sets but placeholders for all 3 (and I check them frequently enough to know they never received the other two at all). One only has a glut of AT-STs, another the Ninja-Go fire chicken/phoenix, and a third Target actually has all three.

The Target I work at has a ton of each of the seasonal polybags to my surprise.

And I got a Corporate Alliance Tank Droid for 15.20 at Kmart today. I'm hoping the Western Train falls below 25.

I took the cyborg arm fro mthe $10 Agents set and stuck it, and the head on a Santa body to get evil robot Santa.

I understand buying a few of them, but not every one a store has. If I knew how cool the Skellie Choper is I probably would have bough another 1-2 for the interesting (and cheap) new pieces.

Speaking of NinjaGo there is a LEGO NinjaGo app that is the 6th top free app of the day. You scan boxes and get things for the game. Seems neat if my iPod (2nd gen) had a camera I'd check it out.

When I was at Target the other night, I looked all over for those. I thought it'd be a cute gift for my kids. Couldn't find them anywhere, looked in Easter stuff, looked all over toys. I tried to ask Customer (oops, Guest) Service, but they didn't want to help. Apparently they have no way of telling what product they have on the floor, the stock fairies come at night and the shelves just magically fill up.

Couldn't find them anywhere, looked in Easter stuff, looked all over toys. I tried to ask Customer (oops, Guest) Service, but they didn't want to help. Apparently they have no way of telling what product they have on the floor, the stock fairies come at night and the shelves just magically fill up.
Prim works at TRU, and I did in the holiday. The service people probably actually think that. The mess they make is amazing and then I get blamed when it was disorganized.

Nice! Thanks for the heads up.

So my lesson's definitely learned on waiting for sales no matter the availability of certain sets. Thankfully I only got taken for the MSRP on a Camper.

Thank you very much

I am still waiting for AC and PotC for now but maybe I can score some bone choppers!

Target usually has Lego sales before Easter as well, but probably won't be as good. Maybe just 10% off certain sets/themes, but better than MSRP I guess?

Closing eyes ... fingers in ears ... "I am blind to sales until LEGO releases some new sets" ...

Am I the only one feeling like it's an irregularly slow period for LEGOs right now? More so now than in the past few years? I mean, yeah, we just got series 4 but honestly ... they're cool to look at but you open the bag, put them together and then ... pft ... done (at least for me).

And it's true the Maersk train just came out ... but it's sold out at the local store and on backorder at S@H .. and I'm not convinced I need a shipping container train from a company I'm not even sure exists in America (I know ... i know, they ship to the US but I had never heard of them and it's not like some giant American Corporation, not that I'd buy a LEGO set if it were "Chevron" or "PG&E" branded anyway). So yeah ... kinda crossing my fingers for Alien Conquest to get me excited about LEGO again ... or maybe PotC ... or uh ... eh, kinda over Atlantis and the older sets at the moment.

I was skeptical about LEGO but I'm starting to see it differently. Now that I've had time to really study all the sets that they've released since I was a kid (in late 70s, early 80s), I think they're working hard to find that happy balance of pleasing adult collectors/builders and remaining accessible to kids. (Though I'll grant that I'm easy to please, my tastes are much simpler than others.)

I'm really impressed by the Creator sets, my daughter's halfway through the Apple Tree House and she's loving it. Hunting around Brickset, I'm disappointed on missing out on some of the other recent Creator sets that have gone out of print. I think they really hit on my sweet spot there, I love the versatility of the Creator sets, plus I think the builds have a good look to them. And they provide lots of bricks for playing around!

While most of the City sets don't impress me at all (the fire/cop/truck stuff I should say), they still have some recent sets that are cool. My daughter's excited about the City Camper, that's on deck. bigdaddy clued me into a train depot set that looked damn cool (forget how recent that was, it's out of print now). And I saw in a list of the upcoming releases for City, they've got a fishing boat announced, which could be fun if it's a genuine LEGO set and not a big one-piece bath toy.

The announced Pirates set -- of the Caribbean, I should say, is the movie name a temporary "sponsorship" of the Pirates line, or did Pirates get discontinued and now PotC is taking over? Anyhow, they've got what I thought was an AWESOME ship in there, I forget the name, Queen something-or-other, and it's got some really cool design in it both fore and aft. I think I posted about it here a few pages back.

Anyhow, I guess it depends on what you're looking for or where you're looking. At first I was pissed because LEGO's gone away from hardcore brickwork to more stylized pieces to accommodate modern tastes, but at the same time they're producing cool sets like the Creators, the Town Modular Buildings, and all the other limited sets that are definitely geared to people who appreciate bricks. I don't know if they're doing a great job, but it seems like they're trying to do right by their fans...

The train depot might actually be a World City set, I can't remember but I think it was 2005 and that be City.

Pirates had been dead for years and years. In 2009 for the 20th anniversary Lego released some decent, but slightly over priced, Pirate sets for the first time in years. Then within the same week said it was one year thing, that they had a deal with Disney and that Disney was making PotC4. So it's clear to everyone for now Pirates is dead.

Ah, that's too bad. But if that ship's any indication, maybe they'll do good things. I definitely come down on the Pirates side if it's Pirates vs. Ninjas, or rather PotC vs. Ninjago. I still don't know WTF "Ninjago" is. A portmanteau of Ninja and LEGO?

NinjaGo is awesome because it shows that clearly the LEGO designers are stoned when coming up with ideas. The leading theory is LEGO wanted a Ninja theme, but with action, and the skellies worked well with the Castle line a few years ago, so why not have Skellies fight Ninjas with monster trucks? Perfect for 7 year old boys. :)

I think PotC is a two off theme. Sets based on the new movie this year and then the old trilogy next year and that be that unless they make a 5th movie in two years. My problem with new pirate themes is the fact that they only do one pirate ship and it cost $100+. I want a $50 ship.
