Hearkening back to the heyday of Nintendo, this game faithfully reproduces the classic Super Mario Bros. Although Mario Forever's graphics and sound aren't identical to those of the original, they're so close most users familiar with the game won't be able to differentiate.

Megazell's Comment - Great Mario Clone. It's not as good as 'Secret Maryo Chronicles.' It's still a great clone of the original 8-bit Super Mario with updated graphics.

You can earn money and buy more weapons and upgrades. There are 24 missions in each city for you to complete. It includes a custom music list function so you can listen to your favorite songs while causing destruction. If you beat the game there is a multi-player mode where you can duke it out with a friend in a death match arena. In multi-player you can use up to 8 weapons scattered throughout the level, which include a remote controlled rocket launcher, flamethrower and chainsaw.
Note

This game contains mature content. No one under 18 should play this game.

Megazell's Comment - This game is like the best part of GTA...When you just go crazy and try to fight as many cops as you can....except everyone is made out of potatoes or nuts. Fun game!

Closed Beta - Lore: Aftermath - Closed Beta

Simulation/First Person Shooter/Third Person Shooter
Single Player - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Bring on the Mech warfare with Lore: Aftermath. This isn't some bunny-hopping, guns blazing single player glory mission...we're talking about massive weapons of war unleashing hell onto its targets. Control your Mechanized Assault Vehicle (MAV) by customizing it down to its base chassis, weapons, engines and armor. Play with up to 16 people online. Only the strongest and the most skilled will survive!

Megazell's Comment - This game is based on another freeware game that I posted earlier called...Dark Horizons: Lore Invasion which happens to have a single player campaign that gives you a little storyline into the world of these mechs. Both games are a must play for mech/simulation fans.

Blade

Fighting
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

Blade is a 3D Sword-Fighting game, which offers an innovative approach to the genre. Unlike most fighting games, use of the arms and legs is not possible and players have to let their Blade, do the talking.

Controls
Num4 - Upper Block
Num1 - Lower Block
Num5 - Upper Attack
Num2 - Lower Attack

Movement is done by arrows.

Megazell's Comment - The game is in Japanese. The begining menu is the only portion in English. I recommend this game to those who have game pads and with the use of Joytokey. If you don't have a gamepad by now for your PC...they are really affordable with some of them going for as low as $5 bucks. Get one or more if you plan to play games on your PC. It's worth the investment. This game has no readme.

Cool, we had a small group - 4 including me. We ran 'Prison Break' on a practice server. That game mode is NO JOKE. Very difficult. So I loved it.

Sometime during the match I started to get motion dizzy like I was playing Wolfenstien again. I think I was just tired. The match started @ 9:45 PM EST and we logged off around 10:40 PM EST.

AVA is a great game and with the amount of updates and modes they added it's even better.

I think the next game night I am going to setup with a 2D game like Soldat or Counter-Strike 2D.

The 12 year old living with us decided to pick up War rock this past weekend, and I guess he just got his first taste of real PC gaming, complete with aimbots and lesson on playing-for-free=getting-owned. So, re-downloaded both AVA and Combat Arms to show him better f2p shooters. Both of the games gotten a "horde-mode", and yes they are fairly difficult. Haven't won a round yet on either game, and I'm going to play a round or two before I hit the homework stack again.

Heroine Iysayana

RPG
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme : Fantasy

In some multiverse there is a disk-like world called Byteria. It is home to many different people and bizarre creatures. Our story takes place in Súramir, a large continent where many different creatures use to live and give each other good thrashings. According to elven chronology, it's the year 9992 Lyr. Somewhere near the northeastern shore lies a town called Ashford, capital of a small kingdom of the same name.

Our title character is Iysayana, the only elf in Ashford. For her, life is nothing but a great party. She really doesn't think about anything else than bashes, boys and booze - until now, when the goddess Yw'nafob forces Iysayana to become a heroine. Now Iysayana has to bear the company of annoying people who actually think they could better the world. Their task is to save Ashford from the ominous Lord Shadmyr and find the lost King Magnus. During their adventures they discover a plot to fundamentally change the face of the world, using some really extreme methods...

Heroine Iysayana is a Japanese-style role-playing game. Most of the time the game will be played in a 2-D perspective. This is where you walk around and explore the land, talk to people, visit shops, explore dungeons, search for treasures and so on. Whenever the party runs into monsters the game will change to a special turn-based combat screen. If you defeat your foes, your heroes will gain experience and money. At first Iysayana is on her own, but during the adventure other heroes will join your party. The different characters have different abilities, e. g. one may be a healer and another one a warrior, so make best use of them.

When characters have gained enough combat experience they will grow stronger and learn new magic. You can use spells to attack monsters, but also to heal or strengthen your characters. But note that your magic energy is limited and must be refilled from time to time. Talk to the people in the towns to gather more or less useful information. Take a rest in an inn to restore your characters' health. There are stores where you can buy and sell weapons and armors. Other items can be used to heal the heroes in mid-combat.

The game can be played using the keyboard or a joystick and comes with a detailed help file. You can save and load at any point. Go out and become the heroine the world needs!

Heroine Iysayana consists of three parts, and we strongly recommend to play them in order - everything else would just spoil the story.

Third Person Shooter/First Person Shooter
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

Featuring multiple unlockables, such as more powerful robots and harder levels (which you have to work your way through) this robotic fighting game is pretty cool. Hold on to your laser weapons and shoot down your opponents.

Strangely, there isn't an option for changing the controls which would have been helpful as the robot has an inability to strafe, leaving you stuck deep in most intense firefights.

Megazell's Comment - Like I stated before in a previous post...The PC Gaming arena is huge and very diverse...part of the reason why I like it so much. Here is a game from Spain that went freeware. This is a great arena shooter. The robots are simple yet well rendered. You don't need much to get the max out of this little gem.

This remake of Space Fury, is my second (of three) games made for the Retro Remakes Competition 2008. The original arcade game was made in 1981 by Gremlin.

The player pilots a spaceship and battles against 20 waves of alien ships led by a 4 boss creatures that taunts you before each round. Every third round the player can dock to receive extra firepower.

The original game has 5 levels and 1 boss but this remake has 4 times that – 20 levels and 4 bosses.

When (if) you reach level 20 it will repeat indefinitely once you beat it, but it will take lots of skill.

When you get a highscore you can upload your score to the server and see you score compared to other players.

Megazell's Comment - Weird shooter. You have to kill the enemies before they kill you. The enemies turn into blocks. You can then absorb the blocks in order to get a power up to your attack. You can also merge the colors to make weird and different attacks. The more colors in a row the more powerful and time you get to use your new attack.

Code Red - Battle For Earth

First Person Shooter
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

CodeRED: Battle for Earth is a first person shooter that uses the open source Quake 2 game engine.

As for the game controls, it takes a little getting use to the old FPS game play but it’s very easy to customize all the buttons in the game and takes a few minutes to become accustomed to the controls. The game provides in game narration and help, that’s sometimes a little hard to understand but in most cases hitting F1 will bring up a little journal/help screen.

There are nine weapons in CodeRED Battle for Earth that you will come across during the game and are listed in the instructions. To start the game you are just equipped with a little ole blaster.

As noted in the CodeRED instructions, the object of the game is to find the alien leader and destroy him. The game is broken up into 3 episodes each with a specific goal and multiple screens/missions. Episode One – War On Earth, Episode Two – The Outlands, Episode Three – Revenge! The “missions” are basically you looking for and being able to go through the access door to get to the next level. For more information on the overall game features and story line be sure to read the documents included with the download.

Megazell's Comment - I just re-ran this game under Windows XP and it holds up very well. The options take advantage of latest tech so XP users should be solid. Vista and Win 7 users will have to try this out and let me know. This game is like playing through 'Mars Attacks' the comic and movie. You have to kill aliens and take on bosses with a very silly storyline that is held together by ingame events that you stumble upon similar to SIN. The makers of this game later on created Alien Arena.

Destroyed enemies leave medals, silver if destroyed with a long range weapon or gold if destroyed with a short range weapon. Instead of silver medals, you sometimes receive power-ups. This happens often when your weapon level is low, but rarely when it is pretty high already. If you want to power up quickly, you should let some power-ups float around while killing more enemies. The higher your weapon level gets, the less medals enemies will leave. On the other hand, With a low weapon level, it is difficult to kill all enemies.

Megazell's Comment - That's just a snippet the game is simple yet complex because of your choices of armament. The graphics are OK but it looks like FLASH. Which is not always a bad thing.

In the crowded field of remakes, LOS still manages to stand out from most of the rest because it is that rarest kind of game: a remake that is better and more fun than the original commercial game. Cult

Theme: Mystery

Cult is a freeware game by Lee Blum.
Using negotiation and trade, one must resolve a situation involving barricaded cultists in a villa two kilometers away from town.

As you play, you wander around the villa, meeting some of the brainwashed cult members (and some reasonable people). You talk to them, find out what they want, and trade items with them for information. You learn a little about the social structure of the cult and even get to save some lives. Advancing from room to room, you find keys to locked doors and operate switches to remove barriers.

Today we witness too much blood in games when we want to solve problems. As the author of this game, living in the middle east, I want to show that problems can be solved by negotiation, and bloodshed can be avoided. There should be some games that portray negotiation as a peaceful - and viable - solution.

There seems to be a growing breed of 'abstract' freeware shoot 'em ups, where you don't shoot the usual barrage of enemy space ships, but rather beams of light or different objects, or in this case large colored blocks.

An impressive looking multi-directional shoot 'em up, in which you control a mech. The gameplay isn't quite as developed as it could be but still enjoyable nonetheless.

Megazell's Comment - This game reminds of those OLD mechwarrior games that came out for the consoles. Except this one is not as horrible. The controls on KB can be a little stiff but those of us with gamepads and Joy2key will not feel any of the hindering at all. Great shooter game.

Head Over Heels was released, um, a while ago. Around about 1987 if I recall correctly and it was immediately praised in the press as being quite the bestest thing ever. Not only was it a huge game for it's time, it also had great graphics and was very addictive - if somewhat punishing in its difficulty level. The variety in the locations was amazing and the challenges brilliantly designed. Quite rightly it was awarded with pretty much every accolade that could be bestowed upon it by the various magazines. Even today it still stands as a brilliantly designed title and has never really been bettered in the isometric adventure genre.

This version is a pretty darn faithful remake of the Speccy original except with a few spanking extra bits grafted on like a save system and subliminal flashes of erotic art (if I have my way!). I should perhaps tell you a bit about the team who's making the game. I'm the one responsible for the graphics (apart from the lovely logo which you see adorning this site) and I'm Graham Goring.

The programming is by the very talented Tomaz Kac (who only wrote this game because of a hastily scrawled diagram posted on the Retrospec mailing list about how you can't properly sort isometric games without complex masking), the excellent music is by Dorian Black (who I understand has a picture of an old man in his loft - ha ha ha!) and this website and the games' logo is by Pierre Jovanovic.

Other contributors are James Curry, Kakarot, Milos Babovic, Metka Jostl and Sir Dave-O whose beta testing has been invaluable in both ironing out the programming bugs and also refining the layout of some of the rooms due to the handling being ever so slightly different to the Spectrum version.

On a personal note I've also been encouraged by all the lovely people at the pixelation forum (pixelation.swoo.net) and of course the other members of Retrospec who have now grudgingly accepted that I can actually draw fairly good graphics.

Star Wars - Fleet Commander - Clone Wars

Real Time Strategy

SW FC Clone Wars is a fast paced shooting game playing during the time of the Clone Wars. Your mission is to defend a narrow canyon passage against an evergrowing army of enemy battle droids. With each attacking wave your enemy becomes stronger and stronger.

How long can you stand the attacks?

Megazell's Comment - This game plays more like a RTS then a shooter. You have to deploy your troops when needed and before the enemy over takes your area. You have very little control over your troops much like the game 'Majesty.' It's a solid try for strategy and Star Wars fans.

Command and Conquer - Tiberian Sun
Command and Conquer - Firestorm

Real Time Strategy
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

THE BATTLE FOR THE FUTURE HAS BEGUN!

Set in the early 21st century, Tiberian Sun once again pits the Global Defense Initiative against the Brotherhood of Nod in a struggle for control of the planet. With an epic storyline that unfolds as play progresses, players learn the reasons behind the worldwide outbreak of Tiberium and what happened to the notorious Nod leader Kane, who was presumed dead at the end of the first Command & Conquer.
KANE IS DEAD. A NEW ENEMY HAS EMERGED.

It's time to head up the Firestorm task force. Nod's experiments have unknowingly released a horde of cybernetic nightmares upon the world. As GDI and Nod scramble to save themselves, they realize their only salvation lies in the unthinkable.

Megazell's Comment - You can also DL Tiberian Dawn - Which is much like GOLD but with more content.

May not work properly with Windows Vista and higher.

Sir Lancealot

The game was originally written as a 16KB game for the ZX Spectrum in 1984.

Sir Lancelot has always been one of my favorite platform games and I decided that it would be my entry for the “Retro Remakes Competition 2004“. I was lucky enough that the judges liked the game and it received an 11th place out of 76 games.

But this was not “just” my entry – it was also the first game I’ve finished and believe me – I’m a lot better at starting projects than to finish them, so I’ve definitely started more than one game over the years……..but this is the first finished game. Yeah.

BTW - I highly recommend 'The Power' - I think when I end it I will move it up to 'Megazell's Top Pick.' My kid and I decided to try this event every Saturday morning for a few minutes - End-A-Game-First.

I just made it to 2nd encounter with the Boxer in 'The Power' - This game is really good. One of the best platform shooters I have played in a bit since Iji.
Megazell,
Do you know of any problems Full Spectrum Warrior has with Windows 7? I installed it last night and the installation went through, but when I try to play the game I double click the icon and it just cycles and never loads. I've tried it in every compatibility mode available and neither works.

Any help would be appreciated. I might have to just try it on my desktop that has XP on it.
Sorry, I took so long to respond. I totally forgot about this until now.

That game does have a patch for it out that makes it work for Windows 7. The only thing is that is only available to those that purchase it on STEAM at this time.

I have Searchbot looking for it. If you find it let me know.

i dont normally register to these types of forums, and altho im only up to page 7 on this thread, when i saw that the opening poster was online i had to register just to give my thanks - even if i havent found 'that' game i want to play yet.

My pc's very low spec, so finding mmorpg's to play is kinda hard at the best of times, because of this i have been stuck on the same sort of game for the past 8 years nearly, im unsure if its on this thread as im still reading through it (its called The Legend Of Mir 2 / The Legend of Mir3) both are FTP so if you havent tried them you might want to give them a go :)

Whilst im looking through the 30 or so pages i have left to view, could u suggest any mmorpg's for me to play? (that my peice of shit pc will allow me to)

Processor : Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.93GHZ
Memory : 190MB

im not sure if i have a gfx card, when i do dxdiag, in the display tab it says ;

Name ; VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP
DAC type : internal
total approx memeory : 64mb

does this mean i have a 64mb gfx card?

Thanks :)

If you go to the Spotlight section - There is a link to a website called 'Can you run it?' it will help you find games that your machine can play.

If you are ONLY going to stay in the MMORPG arena - There are a ton of games that I posted. I think only the only 2 you can not play at all would be 'Age Of Conan' and 'MegaTen' as those games are extremely beautiful and require beefy rigs.

The are some great 2D MMORPGs that I posted like 'Dungeon Fighter' that only reason I don't play that game anymore is because the one friend that I played it with got shipped off to the war and we will continue when she is free to do so or when she returns.

Your video card has these specs

Name: VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP
Manufacturer: VIA/S3G
Chip Type: VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP
DAX Type: Internal
Approx. Total Memory: 64.0 MB

Looks like you have an HP. When you are ready to upgrade - There are many on this forum that can help you get a great rig for cheap.

If you are willing to clip coupons and abuse rebate programs like me - You can get a beefy rig for under $400.

My last rig was this one.

CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 720
MB: MSI DKA790GX
RAM: Kingston HyperX 4GB
Videocard: HIS Radeon 4870 512MB
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar 500 Black x 4
PSU: Rosewill RP550V2-S-SL
Case: Antec Skeleton PC Case
OS: Windows XP Professional SP 3 (Gamer Edits) and Ubuntu 9.10 (Gamer Edits)

NO DVD Drive, NO CD-ROM - I do everything via USB or download.

Total cost after rebates and coupons: $188.93

^ You may not want to go my route but you get the point.

PS - Yes I know that Mir (all versions) are free. Most players on this forum are asking for less MMORPGs but when I revisit that game soon...I may post it up. I had it posted on my original list on a long Dead PCGamer Forums.
