Free Legal Services Pick: New Media Rights

Legal services that usually cost indies $300 to $500 an hour New Media Rights has done for free since 2007. Currently, this non-profit organization is seeking funds to keep services free and to pay for the ongoing web series Legal Assistance for Game Developers, reports Joystiq.

Along with explaining the company's history and services, Assistant Director Shaun Spalding offered his two biggest tips to indie developers: 1) Don't name your game the same name or something confusingly similar to another game (especially if you're trying to copy that game. 2.) Figure out who owns what ahead of time and make sure that everyone you're working with understands the goals of the project.

The team is currently running an Indiegogo campaign to fund direct legal help to creators who can't afford it AND fund season 2 of its YouTube series LAGD: Legal Assistance for Game Developers. Season 1 included talks with Edmund McMillen, Rami Ismail, Gabe Newell, Zach Barth, and Jordan Weisman.

Unfortunately, New Media Rights can only practice law in California, but its video series is and will be free to anyone, anywhere. Hopefully this team will also inspire similar non-profits in other states.

Thread Update.

Pages 73 to 78 - Many older games have new links - Not all. A few are no longer available and are not denoted on the front page with the scarlet color font for good measure!

Here are some new games added to the list to replace those pesky F2P games that were asking $ outside of donations:

Temple Of The Spear
The Life Of A Pacifist Is Often Fraught With Conflict
Passagebalt
Caged Math
Fixation

*I actually updated a lot more than that but my hands are too tired to type the rest of this right now*

Enjoy

Edit - Mo Games

Sqrxz 2
Sqrxz 3
You have forgotten how to use a pen!

Epic Sax Game
Nurse Quest
Crow and Foxy
Kasier

ONWARD!

Question to the people that come to this thread!

You can answer this via PM or by posting here:

I've been rethinking my approach to free and legal PC gaming. Some of you may know that many companies like GreenManGaming and GoG often give away a retail PC games for free for a limited time. These games remain free for a short time but those that got their copy within the time limit keep the games for free forever in their accounts.

I am coming close to making this list more complete, at least on how I envision it. Removing dead links, removing F2P games (with the exception of the F2P games that do not have cash shops and/or subscriptions...which I will not refer to as TF2P - True Free To Play) and updating already posted games.

As I migrate to the website that I've been meaning to move on to, I wonder...

What would be of greater value to you as a PC Gamer that enjoys free games?

1) A website that highlights individual games much like this thread

or

2) A website that highlights the sources (sites and services that provide the free games)

Free PC Retail Game - Giveaway

THQ is handing out free Steam keys for Metro 2033 for folks who like their Facebook page. At least, they will when the currently overloaded page comes back online. - PC Gamer

1) A website that highlights individual games much like this thread

This is my choice for your poll, Megazell, and here's why: I prefer third-party consumers like yourself recommending individual games to me, because I know you are unbiased and have nothing to gain from doing so. The fact that you spend so much time helping all of us find and play awesome games means you have a passion for this that I greatly appreciate. And since you've played a lot of these yourself and wouldn't recommend malware to us, I feel safe installing them. If you can tell me a specific game I might enjoy, I'll be more apt to try it.

Someone else, on the other hand, could come across a "great" service for free games and tell you to go there, but there's no telling if they're marketing (read: lying) for referrals or some monetary benefit or not. And there's not always a guarantee that the website won't store or install malware or sell your personal information. And also, who's to say we'd all find the best game if there's lots of commercialization on the site (like there is with Steam, PSN, XBL, etc...)

I guess what it all comes down to is that I feel like user experience and recommendation for one game in particular is more important than a user recommending a website. In other words, if you were to say that Final Fantasy X Tekken was a great game over on RPGmaker.net, I would be more inclined to try it as opposed to if you told me RPGmaker.net has lots of good, free games, and I ended up downloading something awful that wiped my C drive on uninstall...

For your poll, I say individual games are better then sources because it puts the individual games on a pedestal. Here everyone can see the games away from other games of different genres and not be in the shadow of the popular games that populate the front pages of the sources.
( i picture those sites like Santa Claus, you don't know what he is going to give you in that big sack of his)

Sorry, I should have added that you must be a CAG vet.

Heya, Megazell. I've been lurking on your thread ever since PC Gamer did their article on it. You have no idea how much fun I've been having based off your recommendations and I never would've fallen in love with so many of these games if I hadn't read about them here. I went out of my way to make this account explicitly to thank you for all the time and effort you put into running this thread; you have no idea how much I appreciate what you've done.
It's been a while since you asked, but definitely number 1.
Cool. I'm leaning that way myself but just thought I would push the idea out there.

well binding of isaac definitely seems like a want, however the other games seem pretty good
ill feel like offspring fling or basement collection seems better
so im going to go basement collection :3 because of how there are 15+ content in the game. i follow the conduct of more games = more time spent playing = less boredom = win. from this i usually stockade games and 'stuff' on my computer for when my dad changes the password to the internet. steam sometimes bugs out, so any way to play games in the areas of deprivation will be a great help.

Update the post about the games - it's bundle so 1 person gets it all.

eledragon - you shall be 1 of the 5 for now - regardless how much you post :)

I'd enjoy those games! I've eyeing HL2 Episodes 1/2 during the Steam sale. Thanks for the giveaway once again, Megazell! Hope you don't mind, but I keep mentioning this topic on other forums in response to "free games" threads. I think yours is probably the biggest listing of free games out there.

Sounds good. I'm watching some very inebriated ppl play Epic Inventor on a jumbo screen so all of that sounds awesome.

You are 2 of the 5.

I like this thread the way it is with all the games listed(I know the question was asked a while ago XD).

Not in on the giveaway because I have quite a few of those games. But my favorite F2P would probably come down to Super Mario 63 or Super Mario Bros. X.

Never heard of Super Mario 63! Found it and can't wait to give it a spin!

blindinglights - You are 3 of 5.

Post Updated.

This game is now a TOP PICK.
Megazell's Top Pick
BeGone
Megazell's Top Pick

First Person Shooter/Third Person Shooter
Single Player - No
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Military

BeGone is a team-based multiplayer shooter that plays straight from your web browser. It plays a little like Counter Strike, in that two teams face off against each other, and you must wait for the next round when you die.

So it's not going to blow any mainstream FPSs out of the water but it's still worth checking out, if just to see how smoothly it all runs. I jumped into servers with 5 on 5 action, and actually had a pretty decent time - in fact, so much so that I'll probably try to get a few friends on it later. - IndieGames.com

Megazell's Comment - Unity games keep getting better and better. This game has some rough edges. The lag is the more prominent one to date. I have notice that if you play it on IE it runs a lot smoother with less lag but the lag is still there during intense fight scenes with 8 or more players on the screen. The requirements for this game are rather steep also but I expect this to be a steady thing as more and more games go browser based.

Megazell's 2nd Comment - This game has had a lot of update since I first posted it. More maps, better buying menu and more weapons. It plays a lot smoother too. I highly suggest anyone into this genre to check it out.

System Requirements

OS: Windows XP SP3 or higher
CPU: 2.2 Ghz
Memory: 1.5 Gb
Video: 512 Mb
