Mercenaries 2: World in Flames - Gen Discussion & Info

I'm still extremely pumped about this game, but splitscreen was definitely a listed feature a while back but apparently it got cut. I'm sorry for those of you who don't have IRL friends to play games and drink beer with in front of the same TV.

Well, there's no need to insult Strider, NTolerance (fitting username, by the bye). Personally, my friends probably wouldn't enjoy playing Mercs for longer than ten minutes. So, removing split-screen co-op does not affect my situation.

I'd say having friends over my house to play the game isn't really the problem (I do that often with them) it's just that I have literally a treasure trove of fighters, puzzlers, racers, 2d platformers, and an entire n64 system of multiplayer games designed well to deal with 2-4 way splitscreen to play instead.

Split screen in a large open ended game like this is largely a head ache and usually comes with technical faults not find in single player.

Sorry if it came off as a personal attack, that was not my intent. I just get frustrated when people think that splitscreen co-op is some relic of the NES days. The Mercs developers definitely wanted to implement splitscreen but likely couldn't due to technical reasons.
The Mercs 2 failtrain has arrived. Lack of splitscreen co-op and flyable aircraft has been confirmed. :whistle2:(
It still has helicopters, just not airplanes. Your use of the word "aircraft" had me concerned.

I got my preorder items for the game yesterday.

We got an email saying there won't be enough available for everyone, and we should tell customers when they preorder from now on that they won't get the bonus items. So if you already reserved it, you might want to go see if they came in.

It's just that hat, right?

I haven't seen any deals as of yet.

This game deserves more love. The first Mercenaries was one of my favorite games from the last generation.

Anyway, this has been one of my most anticipated games for a looooong time now. Pre-ordered it yesterday at Best Buy; can't wait for Sunday. :bouncy:

Wow no splitscreen? Thats why I preordered this at Trainn, so that I could play with some of my friends whenever they came over. Crap...ahh oh well, this should still be good
Go up a few posts...
Oops missed that...thanks. Guess I won't be getting a bonus. Just pre-ordered today, and they said that I'll get my pre-order bonus when I pick up the game...oh well.

So much pop in it's hard to enjoy. You can't shoot when you're the passenger in a vehicle with no gun mount. Cars are way too touchy and blow up too easy, even smacking a tree side ways cause you to catch fire.

Nobody wanted to like this game more than me, instead, huge let down. Huge.

it came out today? I thought that was the original release date....but GAMEfaqs says the 31st.
I want to get it, but Saints row is out in Oct, and school is about to start. Plus I turn 21 on the 30th....they chose the wrong time to release for me.

It comes out on Sunday, but some stores are getting them early and breaking the street date.

It feels like building the game on an engine that scales all the way down to PS2 really hurt the game, at least technically speaking.

Some stores got it to sell early, some people are downloading it.

There's no street date on this game (as of right now). It's just shipping early to stores. I don't know what's up with it. Stores can sell it when they get it.

There definitely is a street date.

Yep, tried to buy it at Target last night and the registers would not allow it.

Ugh... Thanks for the mini review. I was worried about the draw distance, and hate to hear that its an issue. I will probably still pick this up on release day, but will temper my enthusiasm. DAMN! This was one of my most anticipated releases for the fall.

I was watching a live stream of someone playing the game, and I don't see how the cars blow up too easily. That guy was slamming into everything and the car wasn't catching on fire.
It's a bit disconcerting that no reviews have been posted yet.
Well the "official" release date is Sunday, so I'm assuming we'll see reviews start popping up on Friday or Saturday.

Not an attack on you, so don't flip out ...

This kind of statement needs to stop. When a review comes out means absolutely NOTHING. It is in a game company's best interest to hold reviews back until release whether their game is good or bad so they get more blind day 1 sales.. I don't see a pattern of bad games with no reviews until release, I merely see coincidence. There are just as many good games with no reviews until release. And, seriously, probably 90%+ of game sales happen after the initial week of release, so does an early review really make that much difference? No.

Sorry to rant.

Is it "World in Frames" or does it run smooth? Which system you play it on?

No reviews today does seem fishy to me. This game was also delayed so many times, I'm not sure what to expect.

I read that someone had their character swapped in single player with their friends character he was using after he left his friend's Co-Op game. If this happened to me, I would be really pissed since it seems there is no way to fix it other then starting over.

FYI, one of the secret achievements is to "capture" all the High Value Targets. I assume this means you load them onto the chopper instead of killing them. Would've been nice to know in advance, as a stray bullet from the AI killed one of my dudes and I'm too far into it to reboot it. :bomb:

Since you already have the game, what do you think of it so far?

It's fun as long as you go in expecting an iteration of Mercs 1, it's been a while since I played it but it feels very similar.

The things that bug me are mostly technical problems(lots of pop-in, ugly textures, clunky driving + shooting, infinite respawning enemies, overaggressive, unfair AI) plus I don't like the addition of oil as a resource that you need to call in supply drops or airstrikes.

I haven't played coop because I don't like the way that it kinda screws you if you're not the host.

+1 the only game I ever completely played on the first XBOX. I managed to capture all but a handful of targets.

The last mission was near impossible until I found out you can go up the hill about halfway through the level. That made it considerably easier.

It kept screwing me over until I made my own single player character/campaign. Once I did that and joined Jim I had all my money and weapons, etc.

Also, I think the counter goes up whether you capture/kill the HVT. I think the important part is verifying.

I don't really think there's too much of the popping going on. It is noticable when you go in with a fast car but other than that I haven't had too much of it.
I'm liking this game so far, but I'm kind of annoyed at how easy it is to fail missions because of something stupid and then having to go back and redo a lot of it.

There's two achievements for HVTs, I read. The regular one for finding them and the secret one for capturing them.

Yeah, pop-in is only an issue for vehicles. I hate how the gates in race events don't render unless you're really close to them.

I really didn't have any interest in this game until I saw the commercial. i can't get that freaking song out of my head. "Oh No, you didn't!"

I guess I'll check it out for the heck out if.

7.9 from IGN

Essentially, his main complaints were with the abundance of bugs and glitches, the abysmal NPC AI and comment direction, and the poor damage scaling (Tanks getting damaged by fire hydrants yet unharmed by cars, taking damage by running down stairs or a small incline). On the positive side, the reviewer recognized that the game had humor, and still retained the series' trademark focus on blowing stuff up.

Battlefield 2 MC anyone?

There is something really screwy going on where the game won't let me enter my pre order code. I have a silver account, but I am connected to Live. When I go to "Extras" to enter my code, I get a message stating:

"Cannot connect to the EA servers. Please select an Xbox LIVE enabled gamer profile with the proper permissions."

Please tell me EA doesn't have the servers set up to where you have to have a Gold account to enter codes.

Just wait a day or two. This happened with Too Human and it was fixed the next day.

For what it's worth, I was able to use a preorder code last night.

Mojimbo, you were right, there are two HVT achievements. One is for capturing them all. Son of a bitch. That means me and Jim got screwed.

How did you get that dev achievement anyways? You just left your room open and somebody randomly joined who had it?

I read that it was out there last night so I joined an open coop room really quick and got it on my first try.

What percentage were you at when you beat it? I'm at I think 60% right now and each mission is only giving me like a +1%. I wasted so much time dicking around with the races for the other factions because I thought they would advance the story and give me more missions and it turns out all I had to do was go down the mission path for the oil company's faction. :dunce:

Did you(or Jim, depending on who was hosting) at least get credit for completing all the HVTs?
