Montel Williams show cancelled after Heath Ledger comments

I don't think this got its own thread, not sure if it was mentioned in the Heath Ledger thread or not.. This was honestly the first time I've heard about it. Montel made some comments on FoxNews, basically saying he was sick of the airtime that Heath Ledger's death was receiving (and I agree). This happened on January 26th.

Shortly before his contract renewal was declined, Montel appeared on an episode of a Fox News program, where, in light of the media blitz surrounding Heath Ledger’s death, he suggested that the deaths of American soldiers in Iraq deserved more coverage.


Upon receiving news of the cancellation, Williams said, “I can't say thank you enough to those who've welcomed me into their homes for the past 17 years. It has been both an honor and a joy.”


A former decorated officer in the U.S. Navy, Montel launched his eponymous program in 1991. In 1996, he won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host.

I agree with him, it's sad how two wars have basically been forgotten (in the public's mind) while the news stations spend days/weeks following *semi-hot celebrity*'s death or what looney Britney is currently doing.

I agree that there are more important things to talk about then another celeb dying from a drug overdose. But then I havent really cared what those "news" shows cover in years anyways. At least now they are busy saying how great that school shooter was before stopped taking his meds. And the medias coverage of this killer is giving some other loser an idea for his way out, and way to be famous. Good job...
 
I heard something like he was going to retire this year and the network was going to do a full year of the best of Montel shows reruns.
 
It surprised me when i'd heard he was a military officer at one point. He goes from that, to some idiotic talk show host. Was Phil Donahue a marine or something? :lol:
 
He's got money, just makes Fox look bad if you ask me. Not that it's possible for a shit network like Fox to look any worse. Assuming his show was on Fox... you can substitute any of the other major networks in there though, they're all shit.
 
I agree with what he's saying. Yeah it's sad that Heath died, but this country is so obsessed with celebrities. We have to follow when they change their hair, when they get a new lover, when they sneeze, etc. It's pretty fuckin stupid. All the news is today is a 24/7 entertainment show.
 
Ugh, I hate the whole "We should spend more time talking about the soldiers!" comments. There are conflicts going on all the damn time. Are we just supposed to sit at home, 24 hours a day, glued to the TV, muttering "I need to know who died today, tell me how many soldiers died today." You could say it about pretty much any other news story, let's not spend time talking about it, when so many people are dying somewhere else.

Oh, and why are WE wasting our time looking at a video games forum, when we SHOULD be over at Faces of the Fallen, sulking over combat deaths?
 
if he could threaten to blow someone up and keep his show i doubt him saying what he said about heath ledger would kill his show. it was slated to be cancelled before all that happened. his illness like someone mentioned was part of it. the mans been on tv for decades and unlike jerry springer he knows when enough is enough.
 
Well, Montel, "that's the real trick, isn't it?" Problem is, FOX is in the back pocket of the current administration, and all of the other networks are too a-scared to cover the war in a more unpleasant light, let alone cover it much at all. I also don't think the government is really encouraging or even allowing this war to be covered that extensively, as it's easier to support what you don't have to think about on a daily basis.

So the celebrity obsession easily fills that 'real news' void. As Mike Myers in a fat suit and a kilt once said, "It's a vicious cycle."

EDIT: Also, Heath Ledger's passing was a true loss. He was really on the verge of most likely becoming a huge star. He had major-league talent. I think his legend will only grow as time passes, especially after The Dark Knight releases.

Then those same people come back and say " Media terrorism! They're getting us afraid so we can be all patriotic!"when they talk about soldier deaths 24/7.

Also, who is Montel Williams to say what should or shouldn't be on TV? Thanks for producing that quality, informative television for the past 17 years, Montel.
 
Nothing is worse than the whore Ann-Bitch-Whore-Smith died. An American president (Ford) died around the same time an no one gave a fuck because they need to talk about "America's sweetheart". She was a whore, at least Ford was a president.
 
i agree with him, but maybe his show just had bad ratings and they didnt want to renew? i mean how do we know that his show was cancelled because of this, or did it just happen to fall around the same time his contract was up.

Yay for no Sylvia Browne anyway, she's a horrible, horrible person. I'm sure it's not the end of her on TV though...
 
I agree with him. I don't think it necessarily has to be war talk, but I could really care less about Heath Ledger. People die everyday.
 
The only death of a celebrity that I give permission for America to go media crazy is the future suicide of Britney Spears.
Edit: or if Paris Hilton gets run over by a truck...
