Motion Sickness While Playing FPS's?

I recently tried playing Metroid Prime 3 for an hour and got dizzy, in a similar way i would get sick in a car. This seems to happen in every Fps's i play, including Halo: Combat Evolved. Why does this happen. Just one hour of a FPS can get me dizzy. 7hrs of an 3rd person shooter or stuff like zelda do not get me sick. Why? Does this happen to anyone else?:whistle2:#

(BTW, if its not in the right forum, please move.)

I get it constantly. I can make it about 1/2 an hour into a FPS if I am lucky. I take motion sickness pills now and it works fine.

Easy to find since they say motion sickness pills in big letters on the box at walmart.

Ginger Pills.

Yes, thats right, I said Ginger Pills.

Ginger fucking Pills.

Work wonders :)
I didn't play any FPS for 2+ years, and had to take Ginger Pills to get back into my "groove". Long before I knew it I was able to stomach Oblivion for over 12+ hours and had no side effects.

Regular sugar coated ginger tastes pretty good and is good for nausea.

I get motion sickness on old school FPSes mostly although some modern games can get to me every now and then. I'd like to think I've built up a better immunity over the years however.

I've never gotten any kind of motion sickness playing any kind of video game. but when starfox 64 first came out almost a decade ago, I heard alot about people getting motion sickness by playing the game from the inside the ship camera view. personally, I've never had this problem at all.

You know, I can play a ton of FPS's and not get motion sick. But there's one game I just can't play... Elebits. Of all the damn first person games out there, I can't play Elebits without getting sick.

It usually happens to me when I watch other people play FPS games.

Although when I was on my 5th consecutive hour of Halo 3 on night one, I did almost get sick but I got through it and felt better as we got to the 8th hour. The almost-sickness probably had more to do with the time (5 am), the time I had spent playing with no breaks (5 hours), and 20 ounces of Mountain Dew Game Fuel.

I have the same problem, although for me some games produce stronger effects than others.

For instance Dark Forces and Jedi Knight have always been really bad on me, 15 minutes of playing and I feel sick but Doom, Unreal and Bioshock have all been relatively light, I can play an hour or 2 before I feel anything.

Then of course some are just strange, I can play Halo for a couple hours without a problem but Halo 2 does me in after 10 minutes.

I get it in half life 2 when I pick up item with my character hands. Once I got the gravity gun, most of the motion sickness was gone.

Man, I have been fine with fps. Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, Rainbow Six, F.E.A.R, Metroid Prime (no problem). Half Life 2 just gets me sick if I play for an extended period of time. The Darkness is the worst, just makes me sick as hell!

For the first Metroid Prime I had to adjust the HUD a lot so I didn't get sick. I think I turned off the swaying with walking and made it pretty transparent. That helped immensely. I haven't played MP2 or 3 so I don't know if those are options. That's been the only FPS I can play. All others make me sick...and sad. :(

I had it happen a couple of times but I've gotten over it for the most part. Only games that have made me motion sick recently were 3rd person games with bad camera control. Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox, Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, etc.

Wife gets sick after about 1-2 hours with Halo though.

I get sick when playing some FPS. Perfect Dark Zero especially, gave me tons of motionsickness. I had to spend all day in bed once because I got really sick playing it. I eventually traded it away so I wouldn't have to deal with it anymore.

Many old FPS give me motion sickness too. The only ones that don't give me issues are older ones.

Some other games gave me motion sickness, like The Simpsons demo.

I'd also recommend taking ginger pills or even ginger altoids. I have the same problem, and it's been working pretty well for me with MP3. I feel more comfortable eating some ginger than repeatedly popping motion sickness medicine.

It just means you're too weak for FPSs. Turn down the suck and try again.*

*full of sarcasm, don't whine, kids, etc. etc.
No...but I get it horrifically with Super Monkey Ball. Even motion sickness pills are no help there. I'd give them a shot anyways. Good luck bro.
what? How do you get sick with super monkey ball. That game never gets me sick. (apparently, it's 3rd person, and 3rd person stuff don't get me sick)

The only FPS I've ever gotten motion sickness from was Half-Life 2 on the original Xbox.

Oddly enough I played Half-Life 2 on 360 (via Orange Box) and didn't get motion sickness.

I've never had a problem with motion sickness in any game. My girlfriend gets motion sickness from shooters, though she can play third-person games just fine.

I don't get motion sickness, but I do get bad headaches from FPS games. That's why I wish this trend of FPS would die down. We need more 3rd person shooters like GoW.

that probably wasn't motion sickness, it was probably just sickness from how awful of a port that game was.

srsly. I love half life 2, been playing it since launch day on the pc back in 04, but the xbox port was so poorly done, and a good chunk of the game was missing too. dammit that was such an abomination to the half life franchise.

I got it from Shadowrun and gave it up for a couple months, I also got it during the Call of Duty Beta, and the BioShock demo, but I sat back as far as I could and it turned out better for me. I also got it a little from Metroid Prime 1 and Halo. I don't play many first person shooters, that might be part of it, but I have no problem playing third person games.

I think part of the problem is framerate. Camera being the other issue. This is the perfect example of the disclaimers in manuals coming to fruition. I take a few minutes break every half hour or so, just so I don't get it too bad.

Edit: They make a watch that you can wear that supposedly eliminates motion sickness, that might be a better long term solution...maybe?

Edit 2: The watch type thing is out of stock, but here's a motion sickness wrist band

i tried a seaband one, didn't work for me.

This is funny. I've NEVER had this problem until I was going on my second hour into Bioshock. I just though I needed to go to sleep.

I definitely agree with the framerate. I also think aliasing is a problem - I had trouble with MP, and it seemed to have a consistently good framerate but the aliasing is pretty bad. HL2 makes me nauseous pretty much every time I play it, I think because the framerate is not as good and the anti-aliasing is not much better. Screen size and distance from screen is also an issue - I didn't have much trouble with MP on my 20" TV, but on my uncle's 8' (projector)...ugh.

Never had this problem with any game, until I got GH3. Not a FPS (duh), but I just haven't received any form of dizziness from any game but that.
