My experience with the EBGames EB Edge card

FernandoIchicabeza

CAGiversary!
I was in an EBGames store about a month ago and the salesperson pitched the EB Edge card to me. "It costs $5 and gets you a 10% discount for a year on used games in any EB Games or Gamestop retail store or online." Sold - I plunked down my $5. They put a bar code sticker on the card, put clear adhesive tape over it, and out the door I went.

The next day I went to make a purchase at ebgames.com and saw there was nowhere to enter the EB Edge number. I called customer service and was told that it was only good for in-store purchases.

A couple days later, I went to a Gamestop store. By this time, the ink on the barcode has started to fade to the point it was difficult to read (ink reacting with the adhesive tape?). The Gamestop guys told me this was a common problem and they couldn't scan the card to give me the discount. They told me to go to EB Games and get a new sticker - and tell them not to use tape.

A few days later I made it to an EB Games store. By this time, the barcode had faded completely and there was nothing but a blank sticker. I explained the problem and what Gamestop had told me to do. They made a few phone calls and then told me that my card was expired and that I was trying to cheat EB Games into a free new card.

So, I dug up my receipt for the card from mid-May and went do a different EB Games the next day. I explained the situation and he wrote down a phone number for me to call saying that there was nothing that they can do in store. I should call the number and they would arrange to send me a replacement card.

Today I called the phone number and talked with EB Games customer service. They said I need to go to back to an EB Games retail store and they would give me a new sticker - back to square one.

You can use the EB Edge card at Gamestop now?

Clerks from different stores all sing the same song..."should be sometime in August."

The guys at gamestop had been telling me "soon" while the computer systems were switched over. I was in Gamestop on 6/10 to take advantage of the buy two get one free offer and they said that the switch was complete and that it *should* work if they could scan my barcode.

That sucks how they gave you the runaround like that. Thats what they do it seems. Stick around this site and read up on alot of the threads/forums here and you'll learn alot about how EBstop works.

I have an edge card thats still good till the end of June and I have used it at several Gamestop stores without any problems. It normally scans right in, but a few times the employee had to key in the 10% discount manually.

So the Edge card does work at both EB & GS brick & mortar stores only. Neither card works on any of the websites tho. They keep claiming that that will change, but I'll believe it when I see it. Not like the online sites are worth a shit for used games anymore anyway.

Did that employee actually say you were trying to "cheat" EB Games? If so that employee was way out of line (even if you were) to even say that to you.

If I were you I would get that employee's name, the store number and then call and file a complaint with GameStop's CS. Even better (if you have the time) write a letter to the GameStop CEO detailing your problem and put your phone number on it so they can contact you. I guarentee that everyone in that corporation from the CEO > Senior VP > Regional Manager > District Manager > Store Manager, will be embarassed and appropriate action will be taken. They might even offer you a brand new card for your trouble.

I have taken steps like this when employees at other companies have treated me badly, and I always have gotten good results.

To me, it seems to me a disproportionate number of GS/EB employees are arrogant and/or ignorant.
Did that employee actually say you were trying to "cheat" EB Games? If so that employee was way out of line (even if you were) to even say that to you.
I don't recall if the word "cheat" was used explicitly but it was certainly implied.

As I recall, he told me the card was expired and I restated that I purchased the card the previous month and it is good for a year. At which point he said that he had worked for EB Games for three years and that the barcodes take years to fade and that people try to pass off expired cards all the time.

I'm not looking to get anybody fired over a $5 card. Although, IMO, EB would do well do get rid of some of these employees with sub-standard problem-solving and customer service skills.

I would have taken my receipt back to the store that "implied" you were trying to pull a fast one and shove it in that fuckers face.

Why did you go to a different EB with the receipt? I would have shoved it in the dickhead's face for calling me a lying theif.

It is getting ridiculous with the Edge card though, I'm on my 3rd one now and this is the second one not to scan ever, soon as they put the sticker on it already looked shitty and unscannable.
Why did you go to a different EB with the receipt?
I had to drive a good bit out of my way to the EB where I effectively got called a liar. They had a game in stock I wanted to buy that the other local stores were OOS on. (Yes, they lost the sale on that game and a couple others after their comments.) It wasn't worth driving a bunch of extra miles to rub their noses in it. I just want my card fixed.

Actually, the sticker is a good thing. It will make the sticker fade, but it will almost always be able to be read. If you can read it, you can type it in and it will work. Without the sticker, if the number rubs off it can be reprinted. But it's a pain to get a hold of someone most of the time at customer service. It's jsut safer to put the sticker on there. And the amount of time it takes to fade can vary greatly. I sold one before and a few days later it was faded. It's a heat sensitive label.

Update: I *finally* got my sticker replaced. Apparently the solution was as simple as finding an EB Games employee with a clue (which seems to be a rare find). After a long wait on the phone w/ EB Games customer service, he saw some number he needed at the bottom of the receipt and said that was all he needed to print me a new sticker. The next time I buy something, I'll have my fingers crossed that the sticker he printed actually works.

It's funny that another employee of the same store had looked at the exact same information and had authoratatively told me there was nothing he could do.

Man that sucked, but I find that most (but not all) EB employees I deal with don't know what they're talking about so I'm not surprised. Any time I ordered online and tried to do an in-store return I got blank stares.

I let my card expire after the merger. I didn't know they still issued cards but it sucks it's in - store only. We used to get killer deals from this site by stacking coupon codes online.

I lost my edge card.... it had about 30 bucks on it from trade-ins. So I call trying to figure out if they had anyway of seeing if I could get the credit back.

You would think that with all the information that they take when your trying to get a game, they would be able to just pull it back up. Nope... what do I get... the run around!!! One guy say just come into the store and we will call customer service.... Another says there's no way!!!

I am getting so frustrated with this process... why is there no way to recover my credit!!!! :bomb:

Writing a letter as LD already suggested sounds like a great idea to me. Hell I'd say a BBB complaint wouldn't be out of line here. Sure it's just $5, but I bet you aren't the only one to get dicked over like this.

Woops didn't notice this thread was so old. Did they ever get edge cards working online?
