My friend accidently got an extra item from Amazon

My friend bought something off of Amazon.com, and they sent him two of that item by mistake without charging him. I told him to return the item because Amazon will probably charge him for it, but he said he won't get in trouble and will put is putting it on ebay.

Do you think Amazon will catch on or will he probably not get caught?
 
Very little chance of getting caught, and as it's their mistake I doubt they could legally charge him for it.

Though of course the morally right thing to do is tell Amazon about it and send it back if they're willing to pay shipping. They may just say not to worry about it depending on value of the item.
 
There's a lot of mistakes like this due to the influx of orders this time of year. Last year my friend ordered a shirt from I think Karma Loop and they accidentally threw in a pair of $200 jeans in his order. He got lucky and they actually fit him.

GuilewasSNK would have called the police if his friend got an extra item from Amazon.

A few years ago i ordered an HP deskjet for like $40. Amazon sent me an office grade laserjet that was worth $800 @ officedepot (UPS brought it in on a dolly). I craig'd it. If they send you something you didn't order its their problem.
 
sent 2 kindles to my parents... never was an issue. ordered something from tiffany's for my wifes b-day they sent me 2...was never an issue. Keep it.
 
I ordered Captain America's shield from Buycostumes.com and ended up getting two in the box. I doubt they'd want to pay to have it shipped back anyway, but nothing ever came of it.

Nice, I had something similar happen a long time ago, not about a bride but a dell power adapter for a laptop.
 
Actually, most of the hiccups like this are from lazy shipping warehouses. I think Kentucky is the one where the dumbasses that work there will toss a DVD in a box big enough for a microwave oven and throw in 2-3 of those airbag things. My guess is the game came from there and somebody was daydreaming and just grabbed a couple copies when they tossed it in the box.
 
Since I like Amazon and they have given me plenty of good deals I would tell them about their mistake and send it back.

Also if your friend if going to sell the other copy anyway why doesn't he just return it at a cost of what, $.99 shipping it back to Amazon to get his FULL money back instead of $45-50 + shipping and fees on ebay? Or at least give to a friend, maybe even at a discount.
 
When I ordered Dead Rising 2 through yourfree360game they sent me two, I'm guessing it Amazon's screw up though.

I don't think Amazon charges for returns. You just print out a label generated on their site and tape it to a box. The only hassle is having to drive to a UPS store, or if you're lucky just walk to a drop box.

I'm with you though, Amazon has been more than accomodating for various problems I've had in the past. They even gave me a $30 off coupon for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (if I wanted it) as an apology for Capcom not getting them some Dead Rising 2 promo content codes. It wasn't even their fault but they made good on it anyway...and still sent the DR2 content code once it was available. So yeah, I would have sent them their extra copy back.

If it's not invoiced, there's nothing really they can do. On the other hand, you'll feel better about yourself if you at least attempt to do the right thing and contact them. If they want it back, they can at least pay to have it shipped back, and if not - you'll have a clear conscience.
 
This will vary from state to state, but here it's actually legal for you to consider anything you get in the mail as a gift. I don't remember the specific wording, so I am not sure what "the mail" is defined as, whether it's USPS only or any courier, and whether there are any restrictions (I'm sure there are).

That said, I've never been wronged by Amazon too badly, so I would just contact them to return it. That's me though and if someone else's prerogative is different, that's their deal.
 
Heck for some reason I got an extra copy of the heroes soundtrack a few months ago when I first ordered it and then called them after not getting my first order after 10 business days...turns out it came that same day and I called them to tell them that I got it...a few days later I get another Heroes soundtrack in the mail. :|

Legally, you're in the clear. Morally... eh...

Amazon's one of the few companies that doesn't try to screw over their customers, so the least you could do is return the favor and do the right thing. Best case they'll tell you to keep it; then you can have a clear conscience.
 
They will not catch it unless you tell them about it.

They wont be able to retro-charge or charge your card without your authorization.

However, the moral thing to do is return the item to them.
 
Awhile ago I ordered DJ Hero 1 Renegade Edition from Amazon. I ended up with two of them and contacted them about the error.

Some people told me I was stupid for telling them but I like Amazon and they have always been really good to me. It took 3 emails and almost a month before I got in touch with someone at Amazon to take back the $200 item.

They thanked me for my honesty but I wouldn't have kept it anyways. Even though legally you can keep anything mis-shipped to your address, I returned it.

Legally maybe, but if you try to sell it is it still legal? Might not be depending on whom your talking to...
