I can't believe it. I haven't even turned it on in 3 or 4 years, but I just booted it up after being informed that the battery is going dead for the GB/GBC Pokemon games right around this time.

1000 hours and 245 Pokemon from my child/tween-hood...gone =(

If you have any old Pokemon saves that you cherish, but haven't checked on in a while, I strongly advise you to do so now.

Shit, my save in Red is gone, but Blue is still fine. I had a complete Pokedex with level 99s for my main team. Eh, really not a big deal for me. It's just a reminder of how much time my friends and I pissed away playing Pokemon around when I was 10-13.

Unrelated to the battery issue, but still a story about disappearing Pokemon -

I remembered when I tried to transfer my Charizard (is that right?) from Blue to Silver. It the first Pokemon I ever got in the games and was on level 70 or something. Anyhow, something went wrong in the transfer process and he disappeared from both games. Instead the Magikarp cloned itself over to Blue and also stayed in Silver. I was pissed.

I think I'll go fire up the games and see if the batteries have gone dead. I haven't touched them in years.

Edit - I couldn't find Blue, but my Silver game did erase itself. Oh well.

Haha OMG j00 suxorz...just kidding, its gonna happen to every game eventually, probably our current gen console memory cards, just a matter of time :(

I doubt it. Flash memory lasts a hell of a lot longer than a battery.
Man that sucks, but why do you only have 245 pokemon if you played it for over 1000 hours?
lesse, 251 total so 245 isn't so bad, is it?

1 - Mew, which you couldn't get without a gameshark or if you won him at a contest or something
2 - 2 of those fucking legendary dogs. They kept running away from me except for one =(

And the rest were various stone transformations I couldn't get because I already used the stone and couldn't trade with anyone. And I usually spent the hours leveling up, for no real reason.

This is weird because the majority of NES games I've tested still save fine. Actually don't think I've come across one personally that doesn't. Do GB/GBC games use weaker batteries? Pok. Gold is only like 5-6 years old, right?

Will it save a new game fine, but just lost the old one or is it totally fucked?
Will it save a new game fine, but just lost the old one or is it totally fucked?
I demand an answer to this question STAT! I have Yellow and Crystal and though I don't have any nostalgic saves on them, I would like to play them eventually with a fully functioning save system.

I lost my mario and luigi save after 2 months. I was uber pissed, I can't play that game anymore, I was around 1/2 way thru the game too.

Well my friend's Pokemon Red fucked up on him and lost the data years ago. He wasn't very carful with his shit though and was only up to Brock anyways.
BTW after reading this I checked my Gold. Still has the save from some 5 years ago and my shiny Pokemon from the now dead Pokemon NYC center.

Why should I check when it will only make me sad? There isn't a way to back it up is there?

There -MAY- be a way to back it up depending on how far your willing to go. Although all i have is theory based ideas.
If you can transfer your pokemon from Your Gameboy colour to a pokemon on the Gameboy Advance via a data link cable it might be possible to preserve your pokemon.

I was basically in the process of attempting this however My pokemon Golds battery died so that kinda bummed me out.

Well tis an idea. Maybe i'll get lucky and get it to work :p

That wont work

my red, blue and yellow are still completely fine, and their launch copies. to replace the battery is simple, it's just a simple watch battery.

I know the feeling, man. I died a little when my Final Fantasy III save files died on me a couple of years ago. (two at 99:99, one with wonderful glitches like 99 Econimzers).

You can't replace the battery without losing the save anyway though, can you? I'd imagine as you take the old battery out to put in the new one, the save would die there, so it seems pretty pointless unless you plan on replaying it.

InterAct made a Mega Memory Card that works with Game Boy and Game Boy Color. With it, you should be able to copy your Pokemon saved games. Then you can change the game battery without losing your saved game. I've never used one so I'm not sure how reliable it is, but it might be worth a try for those who don't want to lose their old saves.

Reminds me of the time I tried the missingno trick on my freinds RED, and It new gamed, and wouldnt save. He was so pissed
I was thinking of picking up Leafgreen or Firered to replace my old game.
Don't...those james just lack the feel of the originals. I bought FireRed for that reason and regretted it.

I should go check mine out.

Hey, playing the game over from the beginning would probably be more nostalgic anyways.

i remember when i like just caught mewtwo during the 1st year or 2 of the game being out and all of sudden my file erased itself(blue version)

Gold/Silver could tell time which is why they are known for their batteries to just crap out more often than other games. Mine still work fine though.

Those were a rip, I once bought two of them since the device seemed like a great idea but the actual device seems less reliable than the actual games :(

Red/Blue/Yellow actually last longer than the Gold/Silver/Crystal generation because the GSC batteries were faulty or something of that sort. There are very few reports of the RBY gen save deleting while it happens all the time with GSC. The obvious method is to replace the battery but thats hard for some people.
