For PC & 360
Info is starting to emerge.
Co-op with 1-4 players is planned, along with multiplayer modes containing elements of persistence and Call of Duty-style progression. Cross-platform play for all modes is "a large goal of ours," according to Piranha president Russ Bullock. -(From the shacknews article)
______________________________________________
Being produced by Piranha Games and Smith and Tinker, the new MechWarrior is a reboot of the franchise. It won’t have the number 5 after the title, the game will just be known simply as MechWarrior.
The new game takes place in the year 3015 on a planet called Deshler. You play the part of a nobleman named Adrian Kohl, who would rather dismiss his training and studying for having a night on the town. Soon enough, the faction known as House Kurita invades the planet of Deshler to seize control of it. Adrian loses his family in the process and decides to fight these invaders to free his planet.
One of the cooler features of MechWarrior is the use of informational warfare. You’ll use unmanned droned vehicles to scope out the ruined battlefield around you as well as using faster, more mobile scout mechs to reveal enemy activity to teammates. Also, the class of mechs doesn’t matter as much in the game, according to Weisman and Bullock who interviewed with IGN. They said that it’s just not a race to pick the heaviest, most powerful mechs. The designers will reward players for choosing their own mech and staying with it throughout the course of the game. This way, later on, the mech you choose will gain more experience, weapon accuracy and damage through various upgrades. It will also have an impact on how you play as well because the game will change, depending on the mech you choose from the start.
There is no set release date yet for MechWarrior. The game is being developed for PC and the Xbox 360 and will feature a full single-player campaign, four-player co-op, and a multiplayer component. The last game I played that involved mechs was MechAssault for the original Xbox, when I used to LAN it up with my friends, which was a ton of fun. The new MechWarrior looks to bring a fresh take on the franchise and so far, it’s looking great. Don’t forget to check out the trailer below, it’s awesome.

Not bad looking. My friend will be interested, but if it's been like any of the previous mech games I won't be able to play it probably.

It's been a decade since i last played a Mechwarrior game, that was Mechwarrior 2 and i played the hell out of that game. The mechs in that video seemed a lot larger than the old ones, those were the size of buildings. Felt like the ones in the old games were maybe a few feet taller than a person.

that video looks amazing, the detail on the wrecked building he hides behind is outstanding.
everytime i hear of a mech game it just makes me want another chromehounds, thats games was hot shit.

It still is, and will be until this comes out. This looks awesome, as long as the catapult is in there I can see that as another game I'll still be playing 3 years after its release.

makes me want another Steel Battalion game. I am glad that it doesn't look like they are going back to the fast paced games they released on the og Xbox

Well I'm sold. This reminds me of Steel Battallion a little bit. To bad you can't use that controller for it. I think I'm going to play some chromehounds today. Seeing that video makes me want to play a mech game.

The mechs in past games were similarly sized. This vid features a Warhammer, which is around 80-85 tons, and the skull headed guy is an Atlas, 100 tons, the biggest battlemech ever made last time I checked. So they do showcase two bigass mechs.
I loved Mech Assualt but never played PC games. It seems Mech Warrior fans hate Mech Assualt, how different are they?
Mech Warrior was a sim based series and frankly, IMO, it treated the universe better

I have high hopes for this game. Big fan of the originals on the PC even liked Heavy Gear.

Keep in mind, this is set in 3015. The clans don't even come into play until 3050, so your favorite mechs might not be there.

Cross platform play would be huge.

Thanks for posting that trailer, necro. My hubby was a HUGE Mechwarrior fan back in the day. Although this isn't MechWarrior, it looks like something he would enjoy.

According to the wiki page, this may be dead in the water due to legal issues. Which sucks, because I was REALLY looking forward to this.

Quote from the wiki page below --

On September 3, 2009, shortly after posting preview videos and images of the game, IGN was issued a cease and desist order by Harmony Gold USA (owners of the Robotech franchise), citing copyright infringement. In 1996, FASA (the former owners of the BattleTech franchise) were involved in a legal case over the use of mecha designs derived from the Macross series, and decided to discontinue using images of mecha that were developed outside of FASA. These 'Mechs were then referred to by fans as the Unseen.[3] The trailer for MechWarrior featured the Warhammer, one of the Unseen, which is designed similarly to the Destroid Tomahawk from Macross, or the Excalibur Destroid from the Robotech Series.[4] The Warhammer, as well as several other 'Mechs, such as the Marauder and Archer, were an important part of the early BattleTech universe and image, but were based on images from Macross and other mecha anime series, which FASA had licensed from the original Japanese creators, but Harmony Gold claimed the images as their own property inside the US. It is currently unknown if the Unseen will be used in the final game or not.

Mechwarrior didn't even have a publisher attached to it yet, which should be hint number one at it going nowhere fast. That said, I was very impressed by the trailer despite the near-blasphemous lack of hands on the Atlas model, and very interested in seeing the project take off given my great love for the Battletech universe in general.

But fucking Harmony Gold just had to show up and throw the whole seen/unseen matter back in everyone's faces. That's a huge part of why FASA went under, all the legal fees crippled the company despite Battletech, et al, being fairly popular franchises within their respective realms. It's not like Robotech is some hot commodity in the US these days; HG should've just ponied up some cash to back this game and include the Warhammer, Archer, Marauder, Phoenix Hawk, Locust, Longbow, w/e. The game sells well, they win. Not so well, they still control the models.

I swear there was some blurb in a recent Official Xbox Magazine about the forthcoming Mechwarrior game. I think OXM contacted the developer, and the developer said something about more information coming out in a few months.

I can't see the unseen mechs being a big hangup with the game's development. The game can be made without the unseens in it. It's not like they were a massive portion of the Battletech universe. There were some awesome designs among the unseen, but nothing that would be needed for the new Mechwarrior game.

fucking Lawyers ruin the world.

Hey, we're not all bad.

The truth is that Weisman never should have blatantly stole another company's intellectual property, it was just a dumb move.
fucking Lawyers ruin the world.
Hey man, I'm working to become one of those Lawyers. To quote my Contracts prof, "Part of our life consists of straight-up business deals. But part of our life is hustling."

As far as making the game w/o those disputed models, they are a huge part of early Battletech; at the point in the timeline which this new game sets itself (3015), most of the models players of the "recent" incarnations are familiar with don't even exist (every Clan model, for example).

And for OXM mentioning forthcoming details... I am skeptical, as I have seen neither hide nor hair of such an article. Unless you meant the mysterious "upcoming unveiling that readers have already guessed" tease.

Am I in the minority in thinking that trailer didn't feel like Mechwarrior/Battletech? It was almost exclusively urban combat, which does occur in that universe but not to the extent that its the only place where battles occur. Furthermore, those cities look like something straight out of Japanese anime, also not very Battletech-ish.

I'm as excited as anyone to see the Battletech franchise brought back to its former glory but just because someone tells me that trailer is Battletech, doesn't make it so.

Also, count me as a future lawyer and like already said, Weisman is the one who fucked up by copying designs, not the lawyers suing to protect their clients' intellectual property. But, the general public's vilification isn't going to end anytime soon so, oh well...

Looks like Piranha Games are helping with Duke Nuke'em: Forever porting while Smith & Tinker don't even recognize MechWarrior on their site.

No, not OXM coming out with more details, just the developer stating that more details would be coming out. I think it was in response to a reader question in the mail bag section. Might be from a few months ago.

Man I so want a fucking great mech game. Just give me the first Mech Assualt with snazzed up graphics and I'll be happy. That trailer does look cool though. I do prefer he big lumbering type mechs though.

I know your not all bad. Some of my best friends are Attorneys.

Weisman was a retard to steal those designs, but as a fan it pisses me off that Harmony Gold is basically 'protecting' a copyright that they dont even use (in NA at least). Can't they come to some kind of agreement?

I want my damn Kurita Battlemaster! >( 85 tons of walking death and heatsinks!

That really does look like it could be great.

Also, it'd be kind of neat if an indie developer like that would be willing to take investors on a small scale. Like 10,000 people willing to pony up $1,000 and they'd each get a cut of profits if/when the game finally gets made.

Hawken looks good, I LOVED the old PC MechWarriors so this is right up my alley. I haven't played a Mech-type game in 8+ years.

Chromehounds had moments, and I loved the highly configurable mechs' but it seemed to lack the pacing this has.

To be fair, it's hard to slow the mechs' down enough to give them that sense you're piloting a hulking mass while still maintaining a level of excitement and action to make for a good game.

This looks to have it down.

The 'newest' entry in the Mechwarrior series, Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries, has been released as a free download via the lovely people over at MekTek. It includes the core game plus all 3 or 4 of their homebrew add-ons which add some ridiculous number (I want to say 100+) of pre-existing Battletech chaises plus a few of their own build along with various battlearmors (like the Elemental) and a bunch of new weapons.

Seeing as MW4 came out around 2000, and Mercs followed that 3 or 4 years later I'll guess you haven't played it. It runs well on XP, so give it a shot if you need some non-Japanese 'mech-based play.

Relevant forum topic discussing how to install.

Download page which contains everything you'll need.

Why is this thread being hijacked by Hawken? It looks amazing, but it should be in it's own thread.

Anyways, has Mechwarrior been cancelled yet? I've already prepared myself for the disappointment.

That would be 10 million dollars, which would be one damned expensive indie game, and would also make it pretty much impossible to return on investment, or turn a profit at all. Nobody is going to pitch $1000 to a game's development, and certainly not 10,000 people. Now, maybe you could get a few hundred or few thousand to pitch $10 or $20; it's called Kickstarter and lots of games and small movie projects use it. Some indie games (Overgrowth, Natural Selection 2, Grim Dawn, etc) also allow you to preorder early to support the development, as well. But investing $1000 into an indie game that would never be able to return it? No way.

Yea, $1k is awfully steep, but I'd do ~$100 (maybe a little more) for a game I really thought had potential with the right incentives.
