The voucher program is essentially ending, if it won't work for Switch 2 games... which is a shame, as it was generally the cheapest way to get first party Nintendo software.

it was generally the cheapest way to get first party Nintendo software.

Pretty sure most of the games that they apply too have been pretty much as cheap digitally and physically but it's a matter of waiting. Like for me, I wait the one or two months for gamefly to drop the first party stuff to $40 and sometimes it drops to $35 or $30. IF I'm not playing it day one and it's first party, I'll wait on gamefly.

Well...

Costco/Sam's Club: $100 in eShop credit for $90
5% back in gold coins = $5 back/discount
For $85, you get two first party Nintendo Switch games for just $42.50 each.

Unless you want to wait for months/years, it's really hard to beat that,

I usually only wait two months and it's on games I don't mind waiting on. The math works out similar (though I'm not paying any store membership fees) and in the end you get to play something sooner but I get a physical version I can later sell when I'm ready to move on. It all works. Sometimes the resell value is just some money back, other times it goes high enough I end up clearing a small profit. I don't buy to sell, but it's nice knowing when I'm really done with something I can get some money back.

See, I try not to buy anything I plan to resell, but that's just me...

The other thing I forgot to mention is that digital sales are tax-free here, but physical purchases would be taxed -- so there's another savings. That, of course, depends on where you live.

Is the Switch port of Torchlight II worth it instead of ps4? I’m looking to play with my son, and portability isn’t that big of a deal since I have a Portal for solo play, just wondering what the CAG community thinks about the overall port.

More Nintendo Switch pinball news from today.

The previous pinball news from Dec:
Zen Studios made some exciting announcements today. The final table for the Williams Pinball Volume 8 pack will be Black Knight 2000. The other two tables in the pack are Banzai Run and Earthshaker!.

Also on December 12th, the Williams Tables are finally coming to Pinball FX:

Williams Pinball Volume 1
Williams Pinball Volume 2
Williams Pinball Volume 3
Williams Pinball: Universal Monsters Pack

But the best news of all is that the tables are backwards compatible! Meaning, if you already own them on FX3 they will be FREE on FX. Given that historically they've charged for every new iteration of these same tables, this news comes out of left field and is unbelievably awesome of them (y) 🥳

On Feb 27th another batch of Williams Tables, Volumes: 4, 5, 6, and the Indiana Jones table, will be available on Pinball FX. And like in December, if you already own these tables on FX3 they will be FREE to download on FX 🥳

Also on Feb 27th, Bride of Pin·Bot, Swords of Fury, and Whirlwind will now be available for purchase on Nintendo Switch for the first time.

Another announcement is that they have acquired the official music for the Jurassic Park table pack, so now you can play those 3 tables with their licensed music. This also applies to the Jurassic Park tables in FX3.

For the current price absolutely. I had no issues with it on switch at all, however I don't think it has local co-op in case that's what you need.

2 gen 2 starters feels weird. Would have preferred Treeko instead of Chikorita. Glad they are holding until late 2025 hopefully that means not as much jank as the previous games. Guessing they are reacting to the previous gens performance backlash.

Maybe it's because they're giving them Mega Evolutions. Treeko wouldn't qualify. Though yea, no one could've expected two Pokemon from the same gen

Bizarre starter choices, but I'm still going to buy it. Legends Arceus was easily my favorite Pokemon game in years so I'm looking forward to more of that.
Arceus is my favorite too. It really captured the wonder and collection aspect of Pokemon (and it was downright terrifying when they attacked you!)
All I've wanted since then is Arceus 2. Scarlett and Violet were not the same. But this one is worrying me a bit. It looks like everything is going to have a cityscape backdrop, and if that's the case they really need to get things right. Scar/Vio had a bunch of buildings you couldn't even enter and everything just felt dead and deserted. It really made the game feel unfinished.
If the Pokemon are mainly going to be only in designated areas then everything is going to feel spoon-fed. I'm really hoping for the best.

And is this game supposed to run on a regular Switch?

I dont see Nintendo leaving that amount of money on the table so I would bet my house they have a switch 1 sku as well a switch 2 sku; which probably , hopefully, will run and look better.

GB Donkey Kong (aka Donkey Kong 94) is imo the best of all DK games. If you've never played that version, it expands on the original 4 levels of the arcade game with 97 new levels with some new mechanics thrown in (some of which are very US Super Mario Bros 2 inspired). It also paves the way for much of what the Mario Vs DK series would be based on. The original cart had some super game boy enhancements which made this even cooler but even without that, it's extremely good. Mario's Picross is another solid addition, but don't overlook this version of DK. It's...

Curious if we get another NSO drop of Mario titles on Mario day like last year.

GBC Super Mario Deluxe for regular members.

GBA Mario Tennis and GBA Mario Golf for Expansion Pack members would work out nicely.

Another shout out for GB Donkey Kong (94). Great game!!!!

I have no beef with HIMYM. I liked the cast and the corny jokes and the deep lore it created with the call backs to previous events and slap bets and all the mess. But I've not gone back to rewatch it since it went off the air. I know some hated the finale, and it shocked me too, but I didn't mind it so much. It is what it is, the show was still stupid fun and serves as a nice time capsule to that time in life. Same for Chuck and My Name is Earl... and a bunch of other shows that I loved watching but haven't gone back to.

It’s crazy how that show went from zeitgeist to hated in such a short time. Like the conversion was even more drastic than Game of Thrones.
There's also Fullmetal Alchemist 2003. Even if objectively the manga/Brotherhood is the better written narrative, I'll contend to my dying day that 2003 doesn't deserve half the hate it gets.

Much like GoT, HIMYM had what many considered a bad ending.

I watched almost all of it because the girl I dated in college wanted to watch it all the time. My buddy's girl liked Chuck a ton, but dunno how that one played out.

My Name is Earl had a cult following and got cut short, which most seem to think was a tragedy. Not Firefly levels, but sad.

Don't go trying to find original copies of FMA 2003... They demand a high price on the aftermarket these days.

And as someone with several DS and 3DS systems, if you want a playable system and can hack one, importing Japanese standard editions tend to be the most affordable. The DS itself is pretty affordable still, but most are in trash condition. Both of my green systems are imports. Looks great, Japanese used tends be awesome quality, but maybe prices are even higher now.

I'm mixed on that. It goes off rails hard. But lust is a extremely likable character and greed as well though he's the only one who stays the same in both versions beside fatty and maybe envy.

They otherwise completely screw some stuff up. But on the other hand brotherhood neutered kimblee sp? To a extreme to the point I don't even know why they bothered to have him.

Lust is basically a different character, sloth pride wrath are all completely different characters.

The new characters are acquired tastes. Panda girl though was kinda mascot character level ridiculous though.

Tldr I at the end of the day can see why people would hate it for the filler. I like and dislike parts of both of them.

Greed was quite different... And criticizing Al's waifu but caricature Armstrong family is fine?

Only thing I didn't like about FMA:B was Yoki appearing with Scar completely randomly. They skipped it cause of the 2003 FMA unlike almost anything else.

I have rewatched HIMYM a couple times since it aired, and I still like it overall. It definitely has that feel of a sitcom that goes on too long, even if there are still plenty of later episodes I like, and there could definitely have been more content with the mother, but generally it just feels like there’s more… I dunno, heart to it than most American sitcoms. I also appreciate that there’s less reliance on secondhand embarrassment humor than a lot of other American sitcoms. It’s not the cleverest or the most sharply written sitcom I’ve watched, but when I’m watching it, I care about the characters more.

Really? I thought he was exactly the same in both appearances. Only different stuff being Ed doesn't defeat him in brotherhood the way he did in the other and he became a main character in brotherhood since they swap lusts position with his basically.

Yeah, there's a lot of things in the original anime and Brotherhood that you can argue one of the shows did better.

BROTHERHOOD:
  • The Elric Brothers
  • Mustang (Definitely felt more like a hero here than in the original series)
  • The ending
2003 Version:
  • The Villains
    • I felt Dante and her motives worked way better than Father (who basically was some being who, from the god complex he had, acted like he was covering up the fact that he has a small wiener).
    • Whereas he was a generic mad scientist who gets killed off alongside Nina, not only does Shou Tucker get a more karmic punishment in this version, but the idea of turning Nina into a chimera does
drive him insane, with him trying to revive her.
    • While Brotherhood is better in terms of the child Homunculus and Greed, the Homunculi were better handled in the original anime.
      • The idea of them being attempts to revive the dead was not only a much better concept than simply "Father removing sin from himself as part of his "cover his shortcomings by becoming a God' goal, but it also made things more personal with a number of characters.
      • Lust was way more developed as a character in the original anime (whereas she is basically kindling to Mustang in Brotherhood).
      • Envy's issues in 2003 (he's the Elrics' half-brother who is upset that his dad preferred Edward and Alphonse over him) than in Brotherhood (he's jealous that humans can move on from grudges and seeking revenge).
      • Sloth works better as an emotionless being who resembles the Elrics' mother than a giant who doesn't like to work.
  • Some of the members of the Military:
    • Not only is Hughes more developed in the 2003 version, but also
when he dies, the episode where it happens in the the 2003 version focuses on him the whole time, whereas in Brotherhood, he dies midway through the episode and the second half is focused on Mustang.
    • Armstrong works better as a vet who is, like Mustang, feels guilt for some of the war crimes that he committed in Ishval than someone who is considered a coward just because he realized that what he was doing was wrong and didn't want to take part in a massacre.

I'll put this in spoilers so I don't take up too much space.

On the whole I liked Father better than Dante, but I liked the origin of the Homunculi better in 2003. I didn't care for how most of them were blindly loyal to Father for no real reason.

Other things I liked about 2003 were not specifically related to the story. It had themes that were downplayed or absent in Brotherhood, like contemplating what it means to be human (among a cast of souls bonded in armor, homunculi, chimeras, etc.), heavily featured the bond of the Elric brothers and often reflected it in other siblings, had darker themes, and an amazing soundtrack ("Brothers" being in Brotherhood would have made it an 11/10).

While I said before that Brotherhood is a more tightly written and coherent story, I've always personally felt that the ending was way too safe considering everything that was at stake. On one hand most characters learn the lesson(s) that they needed to learn, but looking at it another way, they all start to feel too perfect and badass to be real, and nearly everyone gets a happy ending. 2003 doesn't go that way at all; while the day is saved, it's at great cost to many, to say nothing of all the people lost along the way.

(Also Armstrong wasn't considered a coward for not going along with the Ishvalan Genocide; it was because rather than act on his feelings and take a stand, he froze up and wound up being dismissed.)

Might as well go crazy with Picross before the gold coins go away.
Has anyone experience with Picross -LogiartGrimoire-? Is it worth paying double over the regular Picross game for it?
Logiart Grimoire is a great Picross game, at least for people that want a challenge. I don't know if the Switch version allows it, but on Steam, you can turn off all of the UI hint stuff, even the numbers that dim when completed. It also has more puzzles since they don't have Picross and Mega Picross that just superficially doubles the amount of puzzles in the game.

No mega picross is a little disappointing, I have to admit. But I guess that's the trade off for larger puzzles. If you turn off the numbers dimming, do you still have the option to mark them off yourself like in older picross games? I noticed something about a puzzle fusing mechanic; is it a substantial part of the game or just a gimmick for some added flavor?

I don't do anything additional with all of the assists off, so I don't know.

The fusion stuff is just a means of unlocking the puzzles so you can work on them, which can be annoying at times when you have multiple concepts that could fit the terms they want to cover. The only downside to messing it up is another puzzle that is just a nonsense error puzzle.

Ah, I get it. Seems like it could be annoying if you just want to play a bunch of puzzles, but it's still appreciated that they're willing to play around with the formula beyond a simple menu with this and the Pixel Museum game as well. Kinda reminds me of how there were hidden puzzles in Super Mario Picross.
Anyway, thanks for the recommendation.

30% off is pretty rare for picross games. They usually only get a 20% discount. I picked up the remaining games I still needed since this is as good as it is likely to get. I play these before bed and they're a great way to turn your mind off and fall asleep.
