I had this long writeup on here a few days ago, about the same thing. It was overly negative so I deleted it and didn't post it. But the truth of the matter is that most of these best games were couch co-op mulitplayer oriented, and that's why we have such fond memories of them. It's very nostalgia based. Not too many single player games which you'd still try to play again today. Several of the ones that are, have been remade. Or are accessible in a more current format.
The N64 was a very social experience and perhaps the best multiplayer console in gaming history. But my friends with kids are so "busy" they can hardly be bothered to get together for an hour or two for lunch, or even over at their house. If you still get together with friends then great.
But we are not kids anymore. Hell, kids don't even get together and hang out, or ride their bikes around town now. They sit on their phones all night. They are having a great deal of trouble making friends and building relationships, let alone have friends over all the time for mp gaming sessions. You either live among one of those rich families that has kids over all the time, coming and going to play games, or you don't. Most kids don't have that. It's a very lonely time and kids (and all people really) are struggling with loneliness. We don't make time for each other anymore. It's an instant gratification society.
People are absorbed with themselves and their lives, and many others are very antisocial. The people I play cards with, hell they don't even have real friends. It just doesn't work that way for them. They don't go out or do anything. Just people they see at the card store. and that's their whole social outlet. it's weird. They have no concept of maintaining a friendship or a relationship.
Think of even the initial Switch marketing longform commercials from 2017. Where young adults and yuppies were gathered around the bar, watching over each others shoulders, and playing multiplayer Switch titles. Has it been like that? Have you ever done that??
Different times, man. We'll go through another social revolution in 5 years when people start new movements to disconnect themselves from their mobile phones.
For me the N64 was a great system and all, but also one I would mainly go to for platformers (I liked DK64 haha and I liked Banjo Kazooie and others), some driving games (the arcade racers like Rush 2 and Beetle Adventure Racing were my jam), and like Ocarina of Time. It's not really an all timer system to me and I got the PSX later in its life around when the actual ps one came out and I enjoyed it immensely for RPGs mainly, but some other stuff as well. I was never a super multiplayer N64 guy except for Rush 2 and Goldeneye (this isn't very enjoyable anymore last time I played it a few years ago). It's a neat system, but more for the platformers IMHO.

This is very true but I feel there are a good amount of single player experiences that are worth still worth playing. It will be interesting to see how these games stack up to the Rare Replay n64 games or even the ones on Nintendo switch online. I'm also curious to see how Super Mario 64 from the Super Mario 3D All-Stars compares to playing on the analogue.
It's also an awesome system to have on the rare occasion that you can actually can get some friends in the room to play.
N64 was the king of local multiplayer games, there’s just nothing else that’s come close in my opinion.
That having been said, I still have fond memories for other stuff, Blast Corps, Star Fox 64, Mario 64, WWF Warzone/Wrestlemania2000/No Mercy, Mischief Makers, Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing, and even much-maligned titles like Mission Impossible. I’m absolutely pumped to go back and play these on an updated system even when many of them are available with updated systems and/or roms. Is it gonna capture the same feeling, probably not, but I’m here for it.
I would REALLY like to know going forward if NSW2 is going to play NSW1 carts.
before I buy things like Tsukihime import from Play-Asia. The Switch is winding down and it's time to start thinking about shoring up our collections (with used games, discounted ones) before moving on.
There comes a time where you stop buying things at a certain (price or series) threshold for a particular console gen. You want to know how they see things moving forward, before buying weird things like Ace Attorney collections or Danganronpa which will undoubtedly see next gen releases wherever possible, when we have another hard switchover.

N64 was the first truly 3D focused console. Seeing how 2D Nintendo franchises would transition to 3D was awesome at the time, but going back to them is not always pleasant now. Compared to earlier consoles being the pinnacle of the 2D gaming era, and not much different than the best modern 2D games; N64 camera, controls, graphics, and sometimes frame rates can be vastly worse than modern games. Even if the games are still fun, and better than pay to win gatcha kiddie gambling bait, they can be rough on the eyes and mind. Mario 64 is still amazing though, for such an early effort.

While I'm mainly into single player games, I partially bought into the switch thinking it would be a great social system. The ads did get me. Not thinking as much N64 (though that was social with Mario Kart and GoldenEye) but more thinking of my College days with the SNES. We got together a lot to play SNES games back then (Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat, Top Gear 2, most fighting games,... etc) and Ultra Street Fighter 2 seemed like an ideal way to maybe reconnect with folks. Sadly that didn't really happen much for me. It has been a solid family system and we have had some family events but not like when my kids were younger and we had the GC & Wii and they were still in regular school. Still, it's been a hell of a great system. Some of my greatest single player gaming experiences have been on the Switch.
As for kids these days... for mine....
They had me, the guy buying game systems and games along with plenty of controllers. They also had eachother (3 boys). So I made sure they knew they could host friends coming over to play videogames or my youngest and his circle of friends to have a D&D night, or whatever. I'm not saying we were that house on the block, but we did host quite a few events in the last few years before my youngest moved out. In college, they have oranized Smash tournaments and stuff with the Switch. Heck, that's where my GC four player adapter is right now for the switch... with my youngest son so he can use a spice orange GC controller he rebuilt with some modern controller board for playing smash bros. My oldest mostly plays games online with his friends (mostly his local HS buddies he still keeps in contact with, but also others). He does get to the gym, but I do wish he had more social outlets. I feel for those kids that just didn't get out a lot and didn't have siblings. Online gaming I'm sure helped some but it's not the same as having someone in the room you can laugh with and pause the game while taking a snack break or whatever. In person socialization is great. As for myself, at 50, I don't organize anything yet, but it's going to start happening. In the mean time I've opened myself up to saying "yes" whenever something pops up and I have a monthly Doctor Who fanclub that's been meeting since the late 1980's (when I started going) that I still attend and make it a point to never miss a meeting. I've also done more social stuff with members from the club even when it's really just an excuse to socialize. Like one of them hosted a Dune / Dune II watch party. I already had seen both movies but it was good fun. There's also a monthly D&D thing I recently found out about that I might start doing. I'm taking up pickleball, though at first just to play with one of my kids... but it'll likely turn into a social thing as well.
I've been playing the trial for Vampire Survivors. Not only have I been playing it but I've now roped my oldest son into couch co-op a few times and my youngest was home yesterday to wash clothes and we did a run of 3 player couch co-op. I was already thinking of buying it for the Castlevania dlc releasing on Halloween, but I'm kind of surprised to find how social this experience can be. You mainly just use the left stick to move around. There's no second stick aiming, the weapons are automatic and only a few allow for any kind of controlled aiming by which direction you face or where you are on the screen in relation to the enemies. It's quite fun. I'm not usually interested in games with this kind of loop but the environments, secrets, and what not are enough to keep me coming back. I went ahead and bought the game while it's on sale and will lock in the dlc once I get home and claim the gold from my most recent physical purchases.

I'm fine if it doesn't get a physical. It's pretty cheap even normal priced at like $5 and the dlc is a couple bucks each with the most expensive being the $4 Castlevania dlc. It's really turning out the perfect game to always have installed and ready to go.
I’m getting that animal crossing game when it comes out. Also seems to support family sharing on iOS so my family members should be able to download it to their devices with my single purchase.
I'm sooooooo happy XC:X on Switch. It made sense as the next game since they've done a new game (XC2), a remake (XC1), then a new game (XC3) and now a remake (XC:X).
I feel like a new 3D Mario game has to be at the launch of Switch 2. We had one totally new game and then some 2D games and ports. It's time for another.
Well the Android app has no built in casting support and no way to move downloads to a SD card but it does have game by game spoiler settings in case anyone is afraid of learning the princess is in another castle.
Just curious if anyone thinks Romancing Saga 2 Revenge of the Seven will have a BF discount. Haven't actually seen physical of it anywhere since release.

I am sure it's going to be like a barrage of around 4x homerun titles spread over the course of four months of releasing. It's going to be 3D Mario + Metroid Prime 4, then whatever else they feel like adding.
We've never seen something like this before. Where the console maker has delayed their console ~9 months, out of pure convenience for themselves and their timing. They have almost an entire year to get their release cadence and sequencing perfect.
There's not much on the Nintendo Music app at the moment, so they're holding back a lot from it to add later on. Switch has 8 games, Wii has one game and one for Wii menu music, two DS games, 1 GameCube game, 1 GBA game, 2 N64 games, 2 SNES games, 2 Game Boy games, and 2 NES games (counting NES Metroid & Famicom Disk System Metroid as one game). Some great music here, but it's lacking for volume. At least they knew people would want to listen to the great Wii Shop and Mii Plaza music and had that stuff on day one.

Possible but if I see it on sale I'm guessing it will be like $10-15 off at most. Who knows though. I really don't know what S-E has confidence in anymore.

Hadn’t realized it, but yeah, I agree, it’s getting to be time for another. It’s going to be an attempt at open world though I think. The whole building stuff genre, not that I want it in Mario, but the block shapes at least would be a good and easy fit too.
And also just sharing some stupid being alpha stock boys press release (or website was something like that) I don’t know how I even happened to see and read “the company announced the fall launch of Nintendo games, The Legend of Zelda, Matroid, Super Mario and Mariokart to capitalize on holiday demand for video games.” I just found that funny, the way they spelled Mariokart, and Matroid.
I think the character molds are the same, but the karts are not. The first was in 2014, I think, and the second was in 2022. No bikes this time either. I don't think I'm going to bother with these this time.
We're renewing our Nintendo Switch Online Family Plan + Expansion groupshare and need to fill just 1 more spot. It's $10 per person for the full year.
Sorry for posting here, but we're trying to get this group together quickly and a lot of people don't check the trading forum
If anyone is interested, please PM me or Freeze Time. Freeze is going to be the host since he doesn't get charged sales tax. But I can answer any questions.
