I had not heard of this. Is this still an issue with modern SKUs, or was it just confined to earlier models? I can’t find anything more recent than 2019 on the subject.

I haven't heard of it with OLEDs, just regular switches, so perhaps just old V1's pre-revision as noted above. As said above, it had to do with weird PD implementations, so third party stuff didn't deliver power properly especially when not using a Switch charger, and I believe the Switch also didn't like third party chargers sometimes as I've seen people post about frying them with their generic chargers plugged directly in. For me it was just as cheap to buy an open box official charger, that way any paranoia is sated.

I am disappointed in the Switch 2 rumors. It's not nearly as "weird" and different like we've come to expect from Nintendo. I really hope the final console has things the rumors missed and is better than what is currently out there.
Feel free to add all the ways Nintendo has disappointed you over the past year.

They sent me an email reminding me that I played my switch for a total of 1 hour this past year. Pretty disappointing reminder.

Did Nicalis ever stop fuck ing Pixel over on Cave Story?
Curious about that too. I was surprised they did a video for Nicalis. One comment said they must have a had a gun to Pixel’s head.

Nicalis is a really shitty dev. I want to get Cave Story+ for my Switch but do not want to give full price to that asshole. So I’ll probably never get it.

If you wanna play Cave Story on a handheld and have a modded PSP lying around, somebody ported the original freeware version to PSP years ago. I haven’t messed with it much, but it looks great and seems to run great.

Yeah, the apparent lack of a unique gimmick next gen makes me skeptical of any huge future success for the switch 2. The Wii sold like crazy but millions of normy consumers refused to upgrade to the Wii U. The 3DS also had a really rough start after the DS. And both these “sequel” systems had novel gimmicks that made upgrading more enticing, and judging by the leaks the Switch 2 has nothing like that. I have trouble believing that the average normy gamer who already has a switch will desperately want to upgrade to the switch 2 just for better visuals and performance. Nintendo gamers and casuals aren’t exactly obsessed with fancy graphics lol.

And the og switch is still selling. I was in the market for a switch to gift this black Friday, and this year was also the first year that it got any meaningful discount. It kept selling out everywhere throughout the weekend. The demand is still there so there will be a lot of new switch owners when the switch 2 finally launches and they will have even less reason to upgrade.

I mean, I personally just want a more powerful switch and nothing more. The hybrid nature of the switch was absolutely a game changer for me, to the point where I gave up on console gaming, ignored the Xbox series and PS5, and got a steam deck. All I want is something that lets me play games portably like 80% of the time. But I feel like the average normy switch owner is happy with their switch for now and they need more of an incentive to upgrade… and then of course there’s still inflation and the potential disruptive power of tarrifs to think about. The Switch 2 and a single launch title plus tax might come close to costing half a grand. That’s approaching real luxury item pricing.

I dunno, maybe all it takes is Mario Kart 9 as a launch title and the switch 2 will start printing money. But for now I remain skeptical.

If I grab a digital code from somewhere like Walmart and redeem it on my Switch, do I get the full 300 gold points upon redemption? (Assuming the code I’m talking about is a full priced MSRP title).

You'll get full MSRP gold coins. You only get less coins if the discount is directly on the eShop. So if you get a $60 game code for $20 from Gamestop, you still get the full $60 worth of coins. ,

Am I too late for Festivus?
I don't know if eshop did this or if it's DekuDeals, but a lot of the thumbnails have changed. It's hurting my brain :wall: I've researched a ton of games and can recognize them by their pictures, but now I keep having to do a double-take to figure out what it is I'm looking at. At least clicking on them shows you the original picture.

I guess it's the eshop that's causing it?

Okay, so the other BGMs for puzzle solving on the Sega Picross are from Fantasy Zone, Space Harrier, and Alex Kidd in Miracle World. I’m down for the Fantasy Zone theme and love the Space Harrier and Outrun music, but I think they should have picked something other than Alex Kidd—or at least a different track. This one is too repetitive. Inside Planet from Zillion (I think Sega owns that, though it was also the opening to the anime, so there may be other rights holders?) would have been hype, but if not that, Hard Road from Super Hang On is iconic. If we wanted to go a little newer, literally anything from Streets of Rage 2.

Of course, I really wish you could randomize the tracks. You have to switch between them in the options menu.

My biggest criticism of the Sega pack was the lack of a non blinding background option: let me choose SMS box (white and blue) OR Genesis box (black and gold). I can't be the only one who was playing before bed.

My other complaint is not unique to the Sega version: the 3DS experience was so much better because of having a good stylus. Maybe this is turning into a completely unrealistic hope for Switch 2, but I still miss the stylus. I also miss the dual screen capabilities of the WiiU (showing different video on the TV and handheld simultaneously), but that doesn't improve my Picross experience.

It’s kinda strange to say that, considering they used cheap resistive touchscreens for the DS family, while the Switch has a capacitive touchscreen. Yes, you need a special stylus if you want to use something other than a body part, but otherwise, capacitive touchscreens are generally better and more functional than resistive ones.

True^

I should rephrase it to that I also want it more fully supported for touchscreen stuff like the ds line was. But I probably would prefer the ds touchscreen if nothing else than being able to use any generic item I have on hand or a ds stylus as a stylus if need be. My one pen was nice since it was much longer and better to hold than a regular stylus when I wasn't playing theaterhythm.

Music games and other genres I also miss having touchscreen control options for.

The capacitive touchscreen is better for convenience and accuracy, but not precise resolution without EMR or other Wacom style tech as a layer under the capacitive digitizer... That stuff is expensive Which is why most "digital signing devices" are still resistive touchscreens. They are cheap and crappy, but precise.

Yeah there's nothing wrong with the switch's touch screen. I used it quite a lot with a capacitive stylus for The World Ends With You and had zero issues, worked great. The problem is almost no games utilize touch, not the touch screen itself. It's up to the devs. Even Nintendo doesn't care to utilize it with their own games for the most part.

4K.

HDR Zelda or Metroid. All you need, really. One gameplay trailer for that kind of thing, with quality musical composition, and the internet will lose its mind.

Why? Phantom Hourglass is probably the second best 2D Zelda.
Going to have to disagree with you there. Link to the Past, links awakening, Oracle of ages, Oracle of seasons, original legend of Zelda, minish cap, and link between worlds are all better in my opinion. Phantom Hourglass is better than spirit tracks though.

That's basically all 2D Zeldas in order for me, from best to worst, except I'd prob put Minish Cap before OG Zelda. But to me, there's a huge drop off between Minish cap to OG Zelda (honestly don't think it holds up).

I have a ton of nostalgia for the original playing it as a kid so I always think of it fondly, but have played it start to finish in quite some time. Minish cap is very underrated I fell like it gets overlooked, it's a great game. Replayed if a couple years ago and it definitely holds up nicely.

Maybe. Don’t only like half of households even own a 4k tv? And iirc only about 20% of switch owners predominantly play in docked mode anyway, so 4k support wouldn’t be such a huge draw to everyone else.

I don’t even use my 4k tv for 4k shit. I mostly just turn on my tv for YouTube or wrestling while I’m eating or doing stuff like work or folding laundry. Maybe a PS4 game or couch co op every now and then. But I guess I’m not a normie. I dunno ultimately what normie consumers want or if they on average even know what 4k is. I wouldn’t be surprised if most people with 4k tvs haven’t even watched 4k content.

The problem is that the hardware technology is outpacing the actual content being offered. Most content on Youtube TV and Xfinity is 720p. I have Xfinity with the 4K flex box and the only time I get to make use of it is for 4K Live sports at times (College football/basketball and English Premier League). The greedy ass NFL with all of their streaming exclusive game bullshit doesn't offer any 4K games.

My gaming consoles make more use of the 4K HDR content on PS5/Xbox. I typically watch 4K HDR Dolby Vision movies in a non-streaming method and I do notice the difference. These content providers have no incentive to work harder to provide content with better picture quality unfortunately.

I have a PS5 and still use my 1080p TV with it. I don't see a reason to upgrade when mine still looks and performs beautifully. It's an old samsung but the colors on it are amazing for a LED. If I want to upgrade to 4K I see the models people suggest and that's too much for me so maybe in the future once mine goes bad I'll actually bite the bullet and do it.

On topic I bought 3 cheap indie games on sale from the eShop for their lowest price I wanted to recommend (spent just under $10 for all 3)

Kaze and the Wild Masks $3.99 is like Donkey kong country if you play as dixie the entire time. Very fun and probably my favorite out of the 3 I bought. Graphics are super clean as well looks something out of the SNES era.

MARSUPILAMI - HOOBADVENTURE $1.99 is another DK like game but more in line with tropical freeze. Played a little bit and I like what I've seen so far. The main character was also a cartoon in the 90's I remember which is what got my attention when I saw it.

Grapple Dog $3.74 is a fun little platformer that reminds me of bionic commando with the grapple ability you use. Controls feel really tight and the graphics are beautiful. Feels like something out of the GBA era.

I think both DS zeldas are the weakest in the series. The Temple of the ocean King is one of the worst designs in video games. I still can't believe they put it in a AAA franchise like Zelda. I didn't even finish phantom hourglass and barely got through Spirit tracks.

All three of those are great games and fantastic deals.

Spiritfarer is also at an all time low - $4.49

I love it when the videos show human actors playing the game. Like they actually had to put out a casting call, set up a living room and film that. Why?

Oof, I was hoping to capitalize on gold coins but I guess Gamestop/Bestbuy/Walmart aren't going to price match the eshop sales. Spiritfarer would be an awesome grab if they did

And I can't remember if anyone mentioned stitch. is $7.49 (50% off). It has DLC but you get a lot of puzzles in just the base game.

I tried Stitch out on my phone when I had an Apple Arcade trial. It was… pretty mind-numbing, actually. It was fine as something to do while waiting for an elevator or something, but I wouldn’t ever want to spend actual time on it.

I stick to the medium sized puzzles because the big ones feel like quite a bit to tackle in one sitting. Especially if the picture isn't to your liking. But yes, it's not particularly challenging. If you ever get stuck it's just a matter of trial and error to get through it. If you're not sucked in by the cuteness factor it may be a struggle to enjoy. And touch-screen play is a must!
