OFFICIAL 2006 Yard Sale Thread

Today was my first trip garage saling of the season and hopefully will not be my last. I went to an advertised *10 family mega sale*. First house had a usb sidewinder joystick that i was in dire need of but he wanted $5 and since i was the first customer of the day i let it pass instead of haggling and figured ill get one another day. 2nd home had tons of sealed in box action figures from various comic books and video games like resident evil. Looked them over, saw nothing of interest and most were priced from 5-15. Went into the back of the garage about to give up only to find a xbox headset for $1, payed and left for the next home. Got there and saw a couple mtn bikes and some various home things. The guy had a marble madness arcade machine for sale but i was not incredibly interested. About to give up when i found a stack of xbox games priced at 7$. After sifting through crap like nhl 2002 and bicycle casino lo and behold i found half life 2! I did a cif for $5 and he took it. He also had a new sealed copy of splinter cell chaos theory for $10 that i passed on. Left that neighborhood then and found a house with no video game stuff except a gba sp for 25$ with spongebob and a screen protector that i passed on. Across the street a man was selling power tools but had 3 things for free. He had a scratched dining room chair, a book shelf, and a dvd rack in immaculate condition that i took. Next home picked up a 6 ft bob marley poster for $1.

That was it for garage sales but then i decided to stop by value village too. Went into the back to find a psx with no controllers or cables for 9.99 and a snes with two 3rd party controllers and hook ups for 19.99 and ended up passing on both. Was about to leave when i found a pair of sony wrap around head phones that looked brand new for 1.99 that i picked up. All in all not a bad day.

Edit: Almost forgot while i was at the value village i was looking through the nes and snes games only to find on the floor a capcom street fighter II rock em sock em type toy for 2.99. I was instantly attracted to this toy and looked it over to find that it was increidbly dirty almost as if someone drew on it with a red and brown marker. I was about to pick this too when i checked the date on the underside to see that it was made in 1998. I figured this must not be worth anything then so i passed, but maybe i will go back and clean it up just since it was a cool collector toy.

Overview of days schwag
*Xbox Half Life 2 $5
*6ft Bob Marley poster $1
*Official xbox headset $1
*Wooden dvd/cd/video game rack FREE!
*Sony head phones $1.99

AIR ZONK! HOLY SHIT!

Yesterday there where around 40-50+ sales around us. Hit about 5-10, found some crap N64 games that I passed up, along with some over-priced PS2 games, but ended up finding an almost brand-new Zippo lighter with the fluid and everything in a Zippo box (almost looked like a Zippo gift set) for $5, CIFed for $2.25 (odd I know) and she took it.

So overall really nothing except the Zippo. Wish I would have known about all the sales sooner so I could have went earlier, but thats how it goes. Congrats to all the other finds.

*Feels happy because he got it for $2 at the swap a few weeks back*

For the weekend:

Resident Evil plastic longbox complete - 3
Zero Divide plastic longbox complete - 4
SMS Phaser - 1
DC games - 10
Midway + Katamari + KH1 (not pictured) - 27 from GS after 25% off and b2g1

good finds kuros - i loved zero divide back in the day. Looking back, I'm not sure why.... but it was cool back in the day. Any chance you want to sell that SMS phaser?

You might want to test that sms phaser. I know mine was broken when I got it and think I've heard of other people have problems with broken ones. Some weights on the inside of mine and who knows what else were all rusted. I got pics somewhere in this thread or was that last year's thread.

Problem, no SMS to try it out on. :p

All I have is a power base converter. Does the phaser work on a Genny?

It might since I think the sms controllers use the same plug as the genesis. If you have one of the SMS light gun games, I would just try it. I have one of those phasers since I was lucky enough to stumble onto one with a master system in a box with a 2600.

I didn't make it to any sales this weekend, but I talked to my Father today and had to post this one just for the "braggin" rights factor...lol.

He was at a sale where the guy was moving out of state. He had an XBOX for sale (I forgot to ask how much the guy was asking for it). Anyway, my Dad was talking to him and found out where he was moving to and mentioned it would be a good place to do fly fishing. The guy said he didn't have any fly fishing gear. So, my Dad asked him if he would be interested in trading some fly fishing gear for the XBOX. The guy said he would be, so my Dad went back home and grabbed some stuff he had sitting around.

He took it back to the sale and the guy picked out one fly fishing rod and 2 reels in trade for the XBOX with 2 controllers, DVD playback kit and all the cables. It was manufactured just 1 year ago so it's not an old one either. Sweet score on "the ole man's part"...hehe.

Forgot to mention this:

$15 for this massage chair that retails at $100
Aww, you bastard. I need a new computer chair, but I haven't been able to find one at a garage sale so far.

Right now I'm sitting on one of those crappy metal chairs that fold up...and it's about to collapse because it's all broken up. =|

I hardly ever check yard sales because I don't have much time (and it seems to me that the champs go to many sales). But on Sat. I checked one on my way home from the grocery and saw some books.

I scoutpaled (cell to check Amazon values) a bunch and walked away with 13 books for $3.25 (mostly Christian interest) that I listed for over $120 on Amazon. One has sold for $8 so far.

My wife has really enjoyed laughing at passages in "Every Man's Battle" which seems like a carefully worded discussion of masterbation. If men avoid looking at other women (especially those dressed as "saloon gals") their wives will look better . . .

Rained this weekend.. Grr...

Did find one neighborhood sale still on.

Found the Followiing

NES System with hookups 2 controllers and gun 5$
Mike Tysons Punchout .25
Adventures of Bayou Billy 2 .25
Knight Rider 1$
8 other NES games I cant remember for .25-1 each

7 Cds including RHCP,DMB and Smashing Pumpkins .25 each

Giant arcade-like snowboard controller for PS1 and PS2 complete in box 2$ (no idea if this will work well)

Does it really say that? My wife's dad has that book and it looked a little on the "well, you should just stay at home, cut off all contact with the world, and only read Christian books, as long as it's our book," kind of books.

I found a Coleco Vision in the box for $4.05 - It looks to be in great shape. Didn't come with any games though - anyone got some Coleco games they want to trade off?

I went on Sunday and picked up that box of free games and stuff I posted about on Saturday. Afterwards I sidetracked to Philly hung out on South Street, had a cheesesteak at Jim's ( second best cheesesteaks ever ) and watched the freaks for a while, so all in all a pretty good day. This was a pretty mixed bag of stuff and the people I got this off of told me they have more stuff laying around and would call when they find it.
I need to start hitting Yard Sales... I always think about heading out, but 1. It is hot here and 2. My luck sucks!
Its not all luck though. Some people like snot obviously have tons of luck and others bad. But even with bad luck going to yard sales is laregly hitting enough sales and putting work into it. No one has worse luck then me, but iv found a few good deals.

Got a sweet deal on Craigslist:

Traded my: Halo Xbox + hookups and 1 controller + Splinter Cell 1 and 2 + MVP 05 + Crimson Skies

Got: PSP Version 2.0 + Car Charger (Gamestop) + Hot Shots PSP + Family Guy Movie + South Park Episodes + 32mb memory stick + headphones

I would highly recommend to you unlucky yardsailers to start handing out pieces of paper with your number and or e-mail on them when your out sailing even if you ask and the person has no games push your info off on them. Say something like "here's my number, if any of your friends or family might have anything they want to sell, have them give me a call" They'll take your number 99.99% of the time.

I just got an e-mail AGAIN! from someone who passed my info off to them.
I'll be arranging a pickup tonight for a complete NES, SNES and Genesis systems with 20 pretty good games for $15.

The deals are not all about luck, there is a certain amount of skill involved and prep time you need to invest. I'm actually turnig a lot of my stuff now and making some decent cash while building a decent collection.

You guys that claim to be unlucky need to let up on the negativity and start keeping a positive attitude, use the tips, reread the threads to hone your technique and go find the deals. Trust me they are out there unless of course you live in the middle of bumf*ck USA.

For the record most of my finds come early between 8 and 11 AM. So if you can not drag your ass out of bed early your starting off with a strike against you. And always, always be prepared to use the CIF technique as much as possible.

Accept your fate or choose your destiny!

Kuros that's a pretty decent trade. I've come close a couple of times on picking up a PSP. I'm just waiting for that super bargain find. In the meantime my SP will continue to gat all the love

Well, you also have to consider the fact that I got the Xbox for $50 and the games for about 7-8 bucks total. :)

I think I got the better end of the deal by far.

How often do you do this? We ask at every sale, but we only hand our info out to people who say things like "I think we have one in the attic". I didn't think to give one to everyone, but it's not a bad idea. Seems like you would get exponentially larger coverage that way.

Since I've been organizing my stuff and cutting back on my yardsailing time. I've been giving them out to everyone at every sale. I've been doing this for the last 3 weeks. I've got about 6 responses. One was the free stuff I scored and the other the $15 deal I posted about earlier. 2 others I made offers on but did'nt pan out. the other 2 were no bargains.

I suggest creating a word doc with a 2 column - 6 row table. Put all your info in each cell, print it, then cut them out and your good to go .

Meh, I just dont have the best of luck. But hey despite me saying that you saw me tell the guy that you have to work at it. Last few weeks iv been out at 10 at the latest adn usually around 9 hitting sales, and Thursday and Friday even though I dont have a car iv been walking for two hours hours around my neighborhood in every direction knowing that Thursday/Friday are the first day of sales and games go FAST. And every sale I go to I dont just look around I ask if they have any games. Both yard sales iv found stuff at have been people digging stuff either out of their garage or going inside and taking it out of the closet. I also just got my first Craigslist score. So again not blaming it all on luck. Im just saying as you did, it is largely luck of which sales you hit vs which you miss. While in the last few weeks iv hit a few dozen sales iv missed a few dozen and any of those could have had games....and iv went to a few sales to be told sorry the games we had sold an hour ago.

Handing out your number isnt a bad idea but I cant bring myself to do it, it just seems incredibly rude. I mean ill give it out in a heart beat if someone says they think they might have some games or there is even the smallest lead. But giving it o people who dont have games, make no mention of games and dont mention knowing someone else having a sale...just strikes me too much like being a sleezy lawyer handing out his card ;)

I'm guessing but I probably handed out 50 or 60 in the last few weeks. Everybody accepted them, no one seemed to take offense, many people thanked me and said they'll pass it on to their son or grandson. Six people have gotten back to me. One with a box of sytems and games for free as I posted earlier and another with a box of goodies for $15 that's about 15 minutes from my house, that I'm picking up tomorrow. I really do not think it would be so bad feeling like a sleezy lawyer as your sifting through a box of games you picked up on the cheap. Most of the people you deal with you do'nt know and will most likely never see again. It may be your convictions are much stronger then mine when it comes to this kind of thing, and to that I say more power to you, but as I much as I try I just do'nt get it

Hehe I wouldnt have as big of a problem with it, buy my fiancee would have a fit. It seems rude to me, but I could probally still try it. But, my fiancee is the one that drives and she would have a fit.
Does it really say that? My wife's dad has that book and it looked a little on the "well, you should just stay at home, cut off all contact with the world, and only read Christian books, as long as it's our book," kind of books.
You're pretty accurate . . . but "Every Man's Battle" admits you must go out into the world . . . you just have to "bounce your eyes away" from attractive women.

Wait, I have a solution: Why not REQUIRE women to wear head to toe clothing . . .

Anyway, I've already sold the book . . . I've sold 5 of the 13 for $40 total. I should go to more sales.

No luck today. Its rainy here so not many split second start up sales. The few I went to really sucked though one was ammusing, it had tons of past date food for sale. Some of it was really weird though like Karma Jelly Beans and they had a bunch of other ammusing stuff like a VHS of Vanila Ice TMNT Rap music video.

One sale had a Playstation and some crappy games like Spice World but they wanted $40 for it so I figured why bother tossing a $6 offer out. They also had a ton of Playboys and Penthouses I would have liked to buy but they were a buck a peice so again figured meh.

Meh I wish I could go to some garage sells. I live in a smal small town where garage sells are almost always clothes. But I guess it doesnt hurt to try.

Watch local papers and craigslists for sales with words like kids stuff, toys, electronics and ofcourse Video/Computer games. Craigslist is just great period, seems everyone here has gotten atleast one good deal from it.

Today I was able to buy some strategy guides and assorted magazines (14 altogether) for $1. For the strategy guides, I picked up Soul Calibur II, The Art of Soul Calibur II, SSX 3 and State of Emergency. I also picked up a few old Game Informers and five issues of the Official Dreamcast Magazine. Good find for the day.

Also, two days ago, I saw a PS2 box in someone's trash. There was no system or anything in it, but seeing as how I don't have a PS2 box, I went ahead and picked it up.

Picked up Super Smash Brothers, Mario Tennis and Mario 64 for $5. Not a great deal by any means, but my wife and I's hearts weren't in it this past weekend for some reason. We were willing to take anything. I hardly haggled with the guy-- he had a whole box of games, I should have offered CIF for all of them. Ah well.

Sounds like a good deal to me. ;)

I was just at a friend's house for his brother's "going to college" rummage thing. There were tons of posters, CDs, computer parts, etc I didn't want, but I managed to pick up Secret of Mana and Secret of Evermore for $5.

i seem to run into Secret of Mana all the time (cart only anyway), and i've probably bought and sold about 6-7 over the last few years. hilariously (or not), i bought my latest copy of it for a dollar. i was pretty smug until i got home and tested it and inside was:

Man I would kill to find a copy of SoM like that, not even for value just to reown one. I owned every single SNES RPG back in the day but fell on hard times and sold them.

Anyways, grats to the OP for finding SoE and SoM.

Man that looks shady. Although they left a number, so you might be able to case the guy by his voice. Who knows, maybe they just did a bunch of referals on freexbox360.com or something similar. If you meet him in a mall food court, you might not get mugged. YMMV on that though.

i figure that guy says to paypal and he'll drop it off or some BS... gotta be illegal, regardless of what he's trying to do. when you find out where he lives, be sure to take a dump on the hood of his car, thanks.
