Official LEGEND OF ZELDA: TWILIGHT PRINCESS Thread !

I can't believe someone would want a guide for a Zelda game, Daroga. This is THE franchise that encourages exploration on your own, and it is immensely satisfying to solve a difficult puzzle you've been stuck on yourself.

I remember my best friend back in the day was stuck in the Ice Dungeon in A Link to the Past, couldn't beat it, put it down for a couple months...then one day tried something stupid and completely solved the entire dungeon. He still talks about it to this day, and how happy he was when he finally did it.

The point is, I don't think guides are a good idea, especially when it comes to Zelda. I (sadly) understand the limited game time issue, but I still think it would be a far better experience without them.

Besides, don't you have a wife, Daroga? My girlfriend saw how much I loved Metal Gear Solid 3 when it first came out, and bought me the huge limited edition guide for Christmas...which I thought was awesome, since I'd already beaten it and it was a sweet guide. Maybe you should drop some hints and hold off for now? ;)

It's too bad Nintendo makes some of the shittiest guides (recently) that I've ever seen... let's hope Brady or Prima also get to make a guide (similar to the Pokemon guides).

Nintendo's Final Fantasy IV guide was the worst guide I've ever seen... it didn't even give you a map for the bonus dungeon at all.

A long time ago, as a freelance job, I actually did the maps for the Brady guide for the GBC version of Link's Awakening. Man was it a pain in the ass. You basically had to play through every part of the game using an emulator and take a screenshot of each individual screen. Then you had to use an image editor to cover the Link sprite with a tile matching the one he was standing on. Finally, you had to combine them, with pixel perfect accuracy, into a single map. I had several pages of graph paper and drew the maps and dungeons in grids, crossing out each one as I got it. Tiresome.

I agree with Blind the Thief. Zelda is one of the few games you shouldn't use a guide (unless you buy one to collect). Unlike a Final Fantasy game where there is always some stupid shit that is IMPOSSIBLE to get without a guide, Zelda games are built around dungeons and puzzles, and figuring them out on your own. Using a guide for Zelda would be like using a guide for Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, or any other LA adventure game. So much more satisfying figuring things out on your own.

I usually get the Nintendo guides more for the art and the goodies, rather than for actual handholding in the game. This depends on what kind of game it is, however. For instance, the FF Tactics Advance guide was IMPERATIVE to playing that game. It should have been included with the game itself.

In terms of getting actual hints, I like to use the Universal Hint Reader, if possible, as it's designed -- via a series of branching questions and stepped reveals -- to give you the bare minimum you need to progress, without spoiling anything.
am I the only one trying to avoid in depth impressions and prob even reviews in hopes of nothing being spoiled?
Nope. I'm treading into threads with one hand over my eyes to make sure I don't hear something about how Link has to choose between Zelda and Epona at some point. (Obviously a spoiler tag isn't necessary.)

Well, is Epona male or female?

Do reviewers and previewers actually give important surprises away. Give some examples because I haven't experienced this.

Sometimes I feel like House (from the hit FOX TV show) when I see something unrelated in real life and figure out the solution to something in a video game.

But ya, my brother bought the only guide we ever owned for Ocarina of Time. He used it for the entire game (to be fair, he was only like 10 at the time), and I refused. But I did pick it up on my second run through to find all the damn spiders and stuff.

It's not that I want to play the game with the guide on my lap having it nurse me all the way through. As we talked a bit about in the "When is a game too hard?" thread in General Gaming, being married and having many home/work responsibilites, my time for gaming is limited, and even more so limited talking TV games. I want to make the most of my time, and part of that will be figuring out what I need to do but when it gets to the brink of being frustrating, I check a GameFAQs or the like to get through it and move on so I can enjoy the game.

I'm far too likely to stop playing a game if I get frustrated. Character flaw? Maybe, but something I have to consider knowing I want to experience the whole of Twilight Princess. :)

And besides, it'll have pretty pictures! ;)

The new videos...wow. Ive been staying away from this as much as possible...but we are so damn close! This game should start arriving in stores in the next few days...maybe a week.
Dude, to be fair, some of those hearts are really obscure.
Hey, I was quoting (with the period only) because that's the exact reason I get them.

If you subsribe or renew to Nintendo Power now you can select the free gift of the Zelda TP guide. Also, you will get a limited edition Zelda TP soundtrack. Just a heads up to anyone interested!

PS... the soundtrack part will not show up anywhere until your order has been confirmed. (2nd email you will get, then check "My Subscriptions" at Nintendo.com - you will see it then)

I just renewed a couple hours ago and picked the (original) Fire Emblem guide since that's a little difficult to find and I'd probably use it.

Son of a bitch. I may have to call and see if I can switch it to the Zelda guide if I get the soundtrack.

Edit: Alright, switching it over on the phone. Guy doesn't know anything about a soundtrack, but I'll take my chances. I figure if a Donkey Kong Country guide is still on the list of freebies, the original Fire Emblem guide will still be there next year. ;)

Oh... and the hold music is definitely a Mario rendition.

And he looked into it further, and found that the soundtrack does in fact get included. You are my hero, kendal.

Wow awesome deal I was waiting for the zelda:Twighlight Princess guide to renew anyways and this is a great deal.

I was wondering Ckendal, where did you get this information or did you see this when you renewed or subscribe?

Yeah, I heard about this at another site and checked it out for myself. A few magazines, a players guide and a CD for $20, I can't pass up a deal like this.

A year or Nintendo Power. Zelda Soundtrack. Zelda guide. Pure evil.

I've already spent to much on games this year already. I barely have enough to get the Wii. Final Fantasy 12 limited edition game and guide hit me hard just recently. I already will have to debate whether paying my bills or getting a Wii is more important.
My wallet is crying.
This, along with the "OMGZ...MORE TRU PREORDERS!!!" bit are SO annoying to me because it's basically fanboys making something out of nothing. Let it go, people.
See, that's where you're wrong.

This is the last Wii secret. In order to get to the last boss in Zelda, you have to use the Wiimote to kill another player.

Ritual sacrifice didn't go over well in surveys as a console feature, so they're keeping it under wraps until launch. The B button, if held for 5 seconds, produces an enormous blade.

I totally called that one!

I will have to call again tomorrow if my subscription page is not updated with the Zelda guide, just to make sure it's been changed in their system.

Since the guides are printed nearly a month ahead of time, any hope of getting this on or before the Wii launch?

After you get your 2ND email from Nintendo confirming your renewal it should show up. You will probably have to wait until tomorrow as you "switched" your free gift.

Hmm weird they'd have to mirror the whole game...I wonder if it will affect it at all since the original IS for gamecube (the original, normally mirrored version)

No, it was originally started on Cube and later finished on Wii. The Cube version is a mirror of the Wii version. Think of it as a port.

Still wondering who actually plans on picking up the Cube version.

Spades, how are you going to rent a Wii?

Can't you rent a Wii from Blockbuster or whatever eventually?

And I don't understand how the cube version could be the mirrored one...didn't they make like almost the entire game for the cube then switch it right at the end? Unless... putting it all together is the last step in developing, I dunno lol

No, they just ANNOUNCED that it was mirrored at the end. From what I understand, the Wii version received most of the love.

from what impact i have seen of the wii version is you fight alot of lefties, thats all. Some maps may be flipped too. no biggie. All the reviews say it doesent have a right brain left brain complex that occurse when you flip artwork.

From the Iwata inverviews they have definetively stated that the Wii version has gotten all the attention since the delay. The Cube is technically a port of the Wii version at this point.

To clarify for some of you they didn't have the game finished last year. So many of the dungeans and other content we don't know about were built on and for the Wii. How much? We don't know. But from the interviews it sounded like a lot.

Sweet, I'm taking advantage of that Nintendo Power deal in the morning.

I haven't subscribed to that mag since the N64 days...I miss it. Always has been my favorite gaming magazine.

A lot of you may not have read it so here is part of the interview Iwata did with the Zelda team.

Note: They stated that the team worked on the Wii console for the game exclusively after the delay was announced. Thats the reason the Cube version is delayed. It was an after thought and second priority.

"Honestly, I was one of the people who was happy to hear about the delay. At the beginning of the project, the director (Eiji) Aonuma-san told me how many dungeons to make, and it wouldn't have been possible to make that many by the original deadline. But with the delay, it was possible to put together a realistic plan to create that many dungeons. Of course, I mean this in terms of quality as well as quantity. The dungeons in Zelda games are the biggest part of the gameplay, so it wouldn't make sense if only the outside parts of the game were complete. We constantly received feedback from people testing the game about how to have the player use certain items or at what angle to place the camera, and we used that feedback to constantly work on improving the dungeons. I was grateful for the extra year as I felt that we were able to polish the dungeons to a level that I am personally very satisfied with."

Just because the Wii version got more attention recently doesn't make it not a port.

The Gamecbue version has been done for quite some time. Assets were flipped in the Wii version, making the Wii version the "mirrored" one from the "pure" GC version. Not that it'll make any difference at all, but on the timeline of development (if not release) that's how it works out.

The Wii version is an enhanced port with new features, a totally different control scheme, and some other fun stuff. But that doesn't make the GC version the port any more than them adding things to FFIV Advance makes FFII on the SNES a port of the GBA game.

Not that it matters at all. Both will be wonderful, and I'm thankful to have a "backup" in case I can't get the Wii controls down. Yet, from the current batch of previews, I don't think it'll really be a problem :)

To be clear, the GameCube version wasn't "done," per the staff interviews. It probably could have been released last year, but they wouldn't have wanted to. But yes, chances are after they pushed it back and decided to do the Wii version, they mirrored the GC version and kept working. What that probably means is any additions to the Wii version were then ported back to the GC version.

Considering the hardware is the same more or less, I doubt there was much porting and shuffling of things between versions. Much more likely they created something and imported it into both versions at the same time, maybe tweaking it on either side for the respective control scheme.

Maybe it's inappropriate to refer to either one as a port. Better to say they were simultaneously developed.
Can't you rent a Wii from Blockbuster or whatever eventually?
Block Buster has not rented systems out in 6 years. Wii will be no different, ESPECIALLY since it would have JUST came out.

Hmm well I'm pretty sure I could rent consoles at my blockbuster here in Canada. Well somewhere I rented a PS2 right when it came out...it was a long time ago so I forget. Anyway, someone will rent out a console.

I'm getting the Cube version... I'm saving a good $250 this way, since the only difference is widescreen and the controls. I can live with that, since the content is still the same.

Depends on whether I get a Wii or not...leaning towards the Wii right now, simply because it has more options such as the fishing and I'm sure Nintendo wouldn't put crap controls on their best game. But...thats why I'm renting it 0_o

Sweet...I'm getting the Zelda soundtrack too. I thought since I ordered before everyone else I might have missed out. :)

Actually the cube version has required a bit of work. In the interviews they said they haven't worked on the cube version at all since the delay.

A lot of control maping and altering of code to ensure things work at a smooth framerate as well as testing to ensur the dungeans developed for the Wii worked on the cube have to be done. And they said they just got working on cube dev kits again just recently after they had finished the Wii version.

Matt C from IGN said it Best. "Zelda: TP started its life as a Gamecube game but ended it on the Wii. If you buy the Gamcube version you are a fool."

Ya thats a dumb comment though...I can guarantee you that there will still be some people, even if not many, that don't like the Wiimote for gameplay. So they're foolish cause it doesn't fit their tastes!!!??? Thats like saying your foolish because you like coffee crisp but not m&ms or something.

30 people attended the 48 hour event. And some more right after that. And out of all of them Kotaku was the most negetive and even they said the Wii version is BETTER.

Thats pretty telling. Some people will have to try it but the Wiimore should work perfectly with Zelda. I mean a lot of the sites that attended were deciededly anti nintendo. Chances of them lying are pretty damn slim.

And these people have actually experienced the Wii controls when, exactly?

The situation you describe is a case of preference based on experience. What we have here is simple ignorance. These people are dismissing something out of hand with zero evidence on which to base that decision (and, when you get down to it, a lot of evidence to the contrary).
